Laborers R Us need
more projects, pennies

DELPHOS The manpower behind the Laborers R Us event Oct. 3-5 is in place, now all they
need is more projects and funds.
Buzz and Ellen Ditto of The Carpenters Ministry are the coordinators behind the event and are
excited at the response from volunteers.
This years projects include cleaning gutters, scraping and painting, minor cleanup, constructing
a wheelchair ramp and a window installation. Ditto said theres room for more work.
We have all age groups and skill levels, Ellen Ditto said. We have seven projects lined up and
we could use some more to put everyone to work Friday and Saturday.
Homeowner applications can now be picked up at Delphos Public Library, Delphos Chamber of
Commerce, Delphos Thrift Store, Delphos Senior Citizens Center and area churches.
If anyone knows of a family member or neighbor who could use some help, they can fill out
an application for them, Ditto said. We also have some younger volunteers who cant necessarily help with the bigger projects but would be useful in cleaning out closets, cupboards and even
garages.
Projects are to be small minor repairs and miscellaneous house and yard work as well as a variety
of other needs. Applications are to be returned to Trinity United Methodist Church, 211 E. Third St.
Some homeowners are able to provide the funds for their project materials; however, some are
not. It is the goal of Laborers R Us to be able to help as many requests as possible. Other ways
homeowners can help is through their own sweat equity by themselves, families, friends and/or Ellen and Buzz Ditto, Laborers R Us founders, display the Pennies for

The Delphos Herald will spend the next
several weeks exploring Canal Days
past in preparation for the 2014 edition
of the festival Sept. 18-21.

DELPHOS - Toddy (Rozelle) Diers
who will be 99 years old this year
said 1951, the year Delphos turned 100,
was a time when the city saw prosperity
after the World War II.
All the residents in town reveled in
celebrating the Centennial/Canal Days

with a week-long celebration, she
said.
It was the year Delphos relished in
the history of the Miami and Erie Canal
and the significance it played as a connecting link to the outside world.
Diers said downtown Delphos was
transformed back in time during the celebration and honored the pioneers and
settlers: Ferdinand and John Bredeick,
Theodore Wrocklage and Bernard Esch;
who traveled down Jennings Creek in
1941 from Fort Jennings to start a new
settlement called Section Ten. The
original town east of the canal was

called East Bredeick and the area of
town west of the canal was called West
Bredeick.
Of all the Canal Days celebrations
I have enjoyed and/or been involved in,
none have surpassed the success of the
Centennial, Diers said. People made
costumes, dressed in long dresses and
bonnets; similar to the clothing worn on
the television show Little House on the
Prairie. Everybody embraced the celebration and really got involved.

MARBLETOWN The
book has closed on the ninth
annual Marbletown Festival and
Garfield Park will once again
be the recipient of enhancements from the proceeds.
The committee met for the
final time in 2014 Thursday
and designated projects for the
upcoming year.
We see a need for more seating around the park, Committee
Chair Kathy Gengler said. We
want to install an adult swing
and a nice bench at the kids
area for parents and a couple of
benches at the basketball court.
Were also looking for a small
piece of equipment to add to the
kids area.
The group also designated a
$300 donation to the Kiwanis
Club of Delphos to use for
mulching the park next season.
The club has assisted with food
for the festival and improvements at the park for the last
several years.
Past projects funded with
festival proceeds have included sidewalks, a shelterhouse,
grill, drinking fountain, memorial rock to Garfield School, a
new flag pole and flag, several
trees and a collaboration with
the Kiwanis for playground
and basketball court projects
and landscaping.
With the 2015 festival
marking the 10th year, the
committee is already planning
special events.
The most exciting news is
we have a band for next year,
Gengler said. The Hallelujah
Saints Band from Lima will
perform at Garfield Park after
the parade. They also appear in
parades and well ask if thats
possible as well.
The Hallelujah Saints are a
non-profit concert band.
A Marbletown Hall of
Fame display, a Col. Marble
Look-a-Like Contest and a
scavenger hunt are all under
discussion. Gengler also suggested inviting all the past
parade marshals to ride in the
10th anniversary parade.
We had a great response
to the events this year so we
know we are keeping most of
what we are already doing,
Gengler said. We just want to
add some new things each year
to keep it exciting.
The next meeting will be
held in January. All are welcome to join the committee.
The 2015 event is set for
Aug. 7 and 8.

25 Years Ago 1989
One of the highlights of the Ottoville Park Carnival was the crowning of the king and queen.
King Todd is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hoersten and Queen Donna is the daughter of
Patricia Hohlbein. Both are seniors at Ottoville High School. The annual parade and carnival
was sponsored by Ottoville Lions Club and volunteer firefighters with proceeds used for park
improvements.
In the junior fair swine show held Monday at the Van Wert County Fair, Jeff Evans, 13, won
the trophy and rosette for the junior fair grand champion-barrow. Jeff is a member of Hoaglin
Farmers and the son of Judy and Jim Evans of Fort Jennings. He attends Lincolnview Junior
High School.
Joe Selhorst and Barry Woodyard are preparing for the 117th Pioneer Days Celebration Sept.
7-10 in Kalida. Selhorst of the Kalida Volunteer Fire Department and Woodyard, Kalida Lions
Club senior chairman for the Pioneer Days; displayed two of the six bicycles which will be
given away at 9 p.m. Thursday.
50 Years Ago 1964
Gomers Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) will celebrate its 125th anniversary with special services and events during the month of September, climaxing with the
annual Gymanfa Ganu Oct. 4. The first church in Gomer was organized in September of 1839.
Meetings were held in the log barn of Thomas Watkins. The first church erected was a small
log cabin built in 1841 on land donated near the present edifice.
Sandy Stallkamp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Stallkamp, was named first-place winner
in her age division, 11-12 years old, at the United States Twirling Association contest Tuesday
at Paulding. Two other Delphos girls, Beth Ann and Jeannie Odenweller, daughters of Mr. and
Mrs. Alfred Odenweller, were also entered in the contest. Beth Ann placed fourth in her age
division, 9-10, and Jeannie placed sixth in the 7-year-old division.
Good Shepherd Group of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church met Tuesday evening in the
parish hall. Devotions were given by Anna Davis and the lesson was presented by Mrs. William
Hinton. The business meeting was opened with Martha Planer, secretary-treasurer, reading the
minutes of the previous meeting. Mrs. Delbert Berry gave the education chairmans report and
Mrs. Eitel Planer gave the stewardship report.

Mozingo, 55, of Ohio City,
passed away Wednesday at the
Van Wert Inpatient Hospice
Center.
He was born Dec. 22, 1958,
to William and Jacqueline
(Seekings) Mozingo, who preceded him in death.
On June 30, 1989, he was
united in marriage to Sandy
(Hart) Mozingo, who survives
in Ohio City. They had been
married 25 years.
He is also survived by
two daughters, Tiffany (Craig
Schnipke) Mozingo of Van
Wert and Sadie Mozingo of
Ohio City.
Stanley was a member of
St. Marys Catholic Church
in Van Wert. He was also
a member of the American
Legion. He loved to camp,
fish and hunt for arrowheads. Stanley especially
loved being with his family spending time with his
daughters, nieces and nephews. He worked with challenged adults as a part of
home health care. Stanley
had also served in the United
States Army.

COLUMBUS (AP) A federal judge on Thursday temporarily blocked an Ohio law that scales back early voting, ordering the states elections chief to set additional voting times just
ahead of the fall election.
The ruling from U.S. District Judge Peter Economus comes
in a lawsuit filed by civil rights groups, several predominantly
black churches and others challenging two early voting measures in the perennial presidential battleground state.
One is a directive from Republican Secretary of State Jon
Husted that established uniform early voting times and restricted weekend and evening hours. Another is a GOP-backed law
that eliminates golden week, when people could both register
to vote and cast ballots. Without those days, early voting would
typically start 28 or 29 days before Election Day instead of the
prior 35-day window.
Ohioans can vote absentee by mail or in person.
The plaintiffs claimed the new rules would make it difficult

and black voters, who, the groups say, are more likely to use the
weekend and evening hours to vote early in elections. They said
low-income voters are more likely to rely on public transportation, making it difficult to get to a polling location on a lunch
break. The black churches in the lawsuit have offered parishioners a ride to the polls after Sunday services to vote early.
The state had argued the organizations couldnt prove the
rules illegally placed an undue burden on voters. State attorneys
said the changes would cut costs for local elections boards and
help prevent fraud because same-day registration and voting
doesnt give boards enough time to properly verify registration
applications.
The judge sided with the plaintiffs, who include the Ohio
chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP,
and said the measures were unconstitutional and in violation of
the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
In granting the groups request for a preliminary injunction,
Economus characterized the measures burden on voting as
significant although not severe.
The judge said that having decided to enact a broad early
voting system, Ohio and Secretary Husted may not capriciously change or implement that system in a manner that disproportionately burdens the right to vote of certain groups of voters.
Under the judges order, early voting would begin Sept. 30
instead of Oct. 7. The ruling directs Husted to require boards
to set expanded evening hours and adds another Sunday to the
states early voting schedule this fall. The judge also blocked
Husted from preventing boards from adopting additional early
voting hours beyond his order.
Husted criticized the decision as inconsistent.

Van Wert area to welcome car collectors

VAN WERT Local residents will be able
to see a spectacular array of antique, vintage and
collectible automobiles in the next few weeks as
three different automobile clubs make excursions
to our area.
On Sunday, the Old Ford Model A club from
Fort Wayne, Indiana, will visit the Van Wert
County Historical Museum beginning at 1 p.m.
This group will have approximately 50 automobiles. Ford Model As were built between 1928 and
1930 and replaced the Model T. When production
of the Model A ended, nearly 5 million of them had
been sold.
On Monday, the Buick Driving Enthusiasts
Tour will be in Van Wert. This organization,
affiliated with the Buick Car Club, is committed to not only owning and displaying
vintage cars but also to actually driving them.

The group headed by Bruce and Shar Kile of
Marietta, Georgia, have put together a Simple
Is As Simple Does tour of northwest Ohio.
The 50 cars in this tour will be available for
public viewing at the following locations: KAM
Manufacturing & Universal Lettering between
10-11:30 a.m., Wassenberg Art Center between
noon-1:30 p.m. and Central Mutual Insurance
Company between 2-4 p.m.
On Wednesday, the same group will travel to the
Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta,
but on their return trip to Bryan, will make a stop
in Delphos where participants have been encouraged to visit the Canal Commission Museum and
the Postal History Museum, wander downtown to
do some shopping and stop by The Creamery for
an ice cream treat.

Automobile Club of America will hold their 69th

Revival Glidden Tour hosted by the Defiance
Chapter of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America.
This tour will include approximately 200 antique
and classic cars.
On Sept. 22, 100 of those cars will make the trip
to Van Wert. The group will visit the Antique Fire
Equipment Museum at Central Mutual Insurance
Company, lunching at Willow Bend Country
Club, stopping at the Childrens Garden in Smiley
Park and touring the Van Wert County Historical
Museum.
On Sept. 23, the second group of 100 cars will
make the same stops when they come to town. The
best place for public viewing will be at the museum
where cars will be parked on the grounds as well as
on Third Street.
The public is invited to any of these locations
on these dates to see the many antique automobiles.

When a believer is immersed in the rosary,

the familiar phrases of the Lords Prayer,
the Hail Mary and the Doxology find a soft
rhythm, as clicking beads mix with steady
breaths and the human heart.
While meditating on each great mystery
of the faith, the final words of the Hail Mary
prayers are particularly sobering: Holy Mary,
Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at
the hour of our death. Amen.
The prayers are like a pulse that sinks
deep inside and goes on and on as you meditate on how these mysteries are connected to
your life, said writer Elizabeth Scalia, known
as The Anchoress among Catholic bloggers.
I think all the mysteries would have
offered inspiration and consolation to James
Foley while in captivity, she said, as he
faced the fact that his life was truly in danger.
Its hard not to ask: Was Foley, the journalist captured in Syria in 2012 and recently executed, still praying the rosary as he knelt with
an Islamic State guards knife at his throat?
During his previous captivity in 2011, in
a Libyan jail, Foley began praying in hope
that his mother would know I was OK. I
prayed I could communicate through some
cosmic reach of the universe to her, he wrote
in a letter to priests and students at Marquette

University, his alma mater.
I began to pray the rosary, he added. It
was what my mother and grandmother would
have prayed. I said 10 Hail Marys between
each Our Father. It took a long time, almost
an hour, to count 100 Hail Marys off on my
knuckles. And it helped to keep my mind
focused.
After his release, Foley watched a video
from a Marquette vigil on his behalf, which
included a speech that resembled a best man
speech and a eulogy in one. It was another
link to a larger body, he said, evidence that
prayer was the glue that enabled my freedom, an inner freedom first and later the
miracle of being released. ... It didnt make
sense, but faith did.
After Foleys hellish death this month,
beheaded on camera by an Islamic State
guard, his parents faced reporters and said

they were proud of his calling to bear witness to truth and thankful, once again, for
their familys ties of faith.
Jim was very loved, very proud to be a
journalist, Diane Foley told reporters outside their New Hampshire home. She added,
How do you make sense out of someone as
good as Jim meeting such a fate? Theres so
much evil in this world.
John Foley said he believed his son was a
martyr -- a martyr for freedom.
In commentaries online, some Catholics
have begun asking if the 40-year-old journalist may have been a martyr -- period. In an
interview with NBC, Foleys siblings Michael
and Katie claimed that Pope Francis had
called Foley a martyr during a telephone
call to the family.
A key fact in this discussion is that Islamic
State fighters have consistently offered their
victims a chance to save their own lives -by converting to Islam. In an online essay,
theologian Pia de Solenni, a former staffer at
Vatican newspaper LOsservatore Romano,
noted that it was also likely that Foleys social
media-savvy guards were aware that he was a
Catholic, as well as a U.S. citizen.
Martyrdom is not something that happened a long time ago in ancient Rome. ... Its
something thats happening a lot, most -- if

not all -- of the time, she wrote. If it takes
the death of James Foley for us to realize that
people are dying because of their faith every
day, then that makes him even more of a witness to the truth.
Its almost impossible to believe, noted
Scalia, that Foley was not pressed to convert
during his captivity and, thus, to abandon
his Christian faith. This may have happened,
again, as he faced the immediate threat of
execution.
You know that they tried to get James
Foley to do that, she said. Clearly, he
refused to do it.
If so, its hard not to think about the rosary
prayers once again, she said. Its easy to
see the relevance of meditating on the First
Sorrowful Mystery, when Jesus knows that he
is facing his own death. Thus, in the Gospel of
Luke, Jesus prays, Father, if thou be willing,
remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my
will, but thine, be done.

First Friday Campaign underway;

officiating directors announced
COLUMBUS For the ninth year, the Ohio High School
Athletic Association is supporting the First Friday campaign during the football season as part of National Prostate
Cancer Awareness Month. Participation is encouraged at
any time throughout the month of
September and is also supported by the
Ohio High School Football Coaches
Association (OHSFCA) and the Central
Ohio Football Officials Association
(COFOA).
The campaign includes wrist bands
and public address announcements. Its
motto is tackling prostate cancer one
play at a time. Prostate cancer affects
one in six men in America. Questions can be directed to First
Friday Foundation representative Marti Sammons at firstfridayfoundation@gmail.com. Questions pertaining to the
Campaign and its interaction with OHSAA contests, please
contact Tyler Brooks at tbrooks@ohsaa.org.
Other Cancer Initiatives
Several other cancer awareness initiatives are also underway around Ohio, including Volley for the Cure in volleyball, as well as Kick of the Cure and Red Card Cancer in
soccer. Some schools are doing a For the Cure event in all
their fall sports. More information will be included in upcoming state tournament programs and in the winter edition of
OHSAA Magazine.
Rick Pollak named Director of Officiating Development for
Field Hockey
OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Beau Rugg has announced
that Rick Pollak has been named Director of Officiating
Development for Field Hockey. Pollak has served the OHSAA
in the role of sports official, instructor, rules interpreter, association secretary and assigner since 1993. He is an active
sports official in baseball, basketball, field hockey, softball
and swimming.
I am honored to serve in this position for the OHSAA,
Pollak said. I hope to encourage and enhance the field hockey
experience across the state via umpires, student-athletes,
coaches and athletic directors.
Under Ruggs leadership, Pollak joins 11 other individuals
who serve as the OHSAA Director of Officiating Development
in their respective sport. The directors serve as instructors,
state rules interpreters, officials observers, liaisons with local
officials associations and consultants to the OHSAA. More

Rick is a great addition to our Directors of Officiating
Development, not just for field hockey, but for our entire
department, Rugg said. We have a great group that care

Kalida nets 4-set triumph over Lincolnview

KALIDA Leads were tough to hold on to as Kalida and
Lincolnview squared off in non-league volleyball action
Thursday evening.
The Lancers and Wildcats went back and forth at each
other as a small run in each game was the difference
for the winning team. In the fourth game, Kalida used a
5-point run that helped them win the match 3-1 as they won
the fourth game 25-20. The Wildcats won the first two games
25-20, 25-21 before the Lancers extended the evening with a
25-21 win in game three.
We played very well, Kalida coach Kristen Stechschulte
said. We talked this whole week about not backing down from
our opponent and they did a wonderful job not just giving up on
the team and they pulled together as a team and pulled it out.
After dropping the third game to the Lancers, Kalida fell
behind in the fourth game 4-2 early. The Wildcats then ran off
seven straight points for a 9-4 lead that forced Lincolnview to
call a quick timeout. Kalida would maintain the lead until the
Lancers ran off five straight points to tie the game at 14-14.
With the game tied at 18-18, Kalida regained the momentum

with five straight points as Carlee Miller had a pair of kills and
she teamed with Morgan Niese for a block on a Lancer attack
as the Wildcats went up 23-18.
Lincolnview halted the run with a kill before the two squads
traded points as Kennedy Hoffman had a kill for Kalida and
the Lancers picked up a point on net serve by the Wildcats.
On the ensuing point, the Lancers were called for being in
the net on a block attempt that ended the match.
After a timeout, our girls came out ready to go,
Stechschulte said of the fourth game. We told them to keep
hitting at them as we started to tip a lot and Lincolnview was
starting to get some momentum with their aggressive play.
Our girls came out and started attacking and were able to get
the momentum back.
Lincolnview coach JaNahn Evans was pleased with the way
her team battled, but felt the slow start was a key in the loss.
We got off to a slow start and that is something we have
been working on in practice, Evans said. It was a lot of back
and forth volleyball, we needed to control our court and not
let anything discourage us. We cant start in game three and
expect to win.

Lancer boys falter vs. Botkins

MIDDLE POINT A pair of
Western Ohio Soccer league squads
got together for a conference match
at Lincolnview High School, with the
Lancers dropping a 4-0 final to visiting
Botkins on Thursday night.
Kaleb Hanby was the star for Botkins,
recording a hat trick in the win.
Botkins (4-1) was awarded a
free kick from 25 yards out in
the eighth minute but Hanbys
shot went high. Minutes later,
Hanby put the Trojans on the
board when he beat the Lancer keeper
with a low shot to the near post to give
Botkins a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
In the 18th minute, Lincolnview (0-5)
had a chance to even the game up when
Cole Schmersal pulled up from just
beyond the penalty box but his blast
missed the net wide left.

The Trojans increased their lead in
the 27th minute, when Hanby played
the ball to the middle of the pitch, then
passed it to his right to Zane Egbert.
Egbert then beat the Lincolnview netminder to the top right post bring the
score to 2-0.
Botkins found paydirt again with
three minutes to play before intermission, as Hanby connected with a blast
from 20 yards out for his second
goal of the night.
There were some letdowns
(in the first half). We just struggled with our possession - kind
of what we have been struggling
with all year. We work really hard to
get the ball to quickly turn the ball
back over. Then we are down 3-0, said
Lancers coach Britt Munson. The first
half is our Achilles heel for some reason
(this year).
Coming out of halftime, Lincolnview
was awarded a free kick just outside of

the penalty box. Austin Leeth stepped up
to the ball and took a shot at goal but the
Botkins wall was able to block the shot
and the ball bounced harmlessly away.
Lincolnviews best chance came
in the 57th minute, when Leeth was
awarded a penalty kick. Leeth went to
the left of Christian Hoskins, the Trojan
goalkeeper, but Hoskins dove in that
direction and knocked the shot away,
preserving the Botkins shutout.
Leeth had another opportunity to
score in the 62th minute but again Leeth
shot was denied by Hoskins.
Hanby collect the third goal need for
his hat trick when in the 74th minute he
fired a shot from the far right toward the
Lincolnview goal. Hanbys shot glanced
off a Lancers defender and found the
back of the net for the Trojans to give
them a 4-0 win.

and inexperienced team but the Lady
Green are a powerful group, using
that impressive attack at the net to
sweep Jefferson 25-10, 25-10, 25-18

That is the best hitting team weve
seen. They just really hit the ball hard
at us, Jefferson coach Josh Early
said. They attacked us right away and
kept coming. We couldnt get anything
to counter because we were digging
things up so much. When we tried to
run an offense, we couldnt get things
to the net to get a good hit.
Using a starting lineup that features two freshmen, two sophomores,
a junior and a senior, the Lady Green
(4-3) had the Lady Wildcats (3-1)
on their heels from the start. With
freshman setter Alexis Thorbahn (35
assists) using a myriad of options at
the net, they grabbed a 3-2 lead in set
one early on a kill by freshman C.J.
Kemper (14 kills) and never looked
back. They were so dominant that the
Wildcats simply could not get much of
an offense going, having to scramble to
try and slow the Green and Gold down
at the net and digging up the spikes.
With three major spurts: 5-0 with
senior Chelsey Boecker (6 aces) registering two aces 6-0 with Thorbahn
(4 aces) adding two aces and a 7-0
late run, the Big Green sealed the deal
on a hit off the block by freshmen lefty
middle hitter Bridget Landin (8 kills, 3
stuffs) for the opening set.
We really clicked well for the first
two sets. Our approach at the net is to
make an aggressive move every time
we attack, Ottoville coach Andria
Wertenberger explained. We didnt
make a lot of mistakes the first two
sets as far as our hitting, even as we
are a young and green team.
Not much changed in the second
set: Ottoville set the pace at the net
and kept the pressure on the Wildcat

The Wildcats may have been down
but they were not out in set 3. They
got more untracked with sophomore
Danielle Harman (5 kills) and the
inconsistency of youth paid a visit to
the Green and Gold side. A hitting
error (10 for the match) put the hosts
in front 13-7 and and a kill by senior
Brooke Culp (5 assists, 4 kills) gave
them a 14-7 lead. However, the visitors started to rev the offense back up
again and moved within 15-11 on a
stuff by Landin. Harman put down a
spike off the defense for the hosts but
that was their final point of the night.
A stuff by Lindeman gave Boecker the
serve and she didnt give it up. Keyed
by three aces, four kills, a stuff and
four Jefferson miscues (17 overall),

including one on match point, the visitors rallied to finish off the sweep.
I liked how we fought back in the
third set. We didnt go away but we
battled back, Early added. I didnt
like how it ended but we stayed in
there and played hard to the end; that
is a positive. We learned some lessons
tonight but it doesnt get any easier;
we have another hard-hitting team
coming in here Saturday, so we need
to get back to work quickly and try to
rebound.
We showed our inconsistency in
the third set, Wertenberger added.
Thats what will happen until we get
more varsity experience for all our
girls. Still, we bounced back from that
and that is a sign of growing up more.
In junior varsity action, Ottoville
(5-2) downed the Lady Wildcats (3-1)
in two sets.
The Wildcats are in action again
on Saturday at home against PandoraGilboa, with a 10 a.m. JV start.
Ottoville visits Upper Scioto Valley

Browns look to revive dead rivalry with Steelers

The Browns have been
Pittsburghs patsies for a
long time.

By showing his young
players the lopsided history
against the Steelers over the
past 15 years, Pettine is hoping the Browns can revive
one of the NFLs saltiest
rivalries. The Browns have
lost three straight, seven
out of eight and 19-of-21
against Pittsburgh, which
is 26-5 versus Cleveland
since 1999 and 13-1 against
their loathed neighbors from
northeast Ohio at Heinz
Field.
From the Steelers standpoint, its not much of a
rivalry, said Pettine, who
will make his coaching debut
in a city he knows well. Its
brutal when you truly look
at it but thats something
thats a big part of our prep
is understanding that that has
nothing to do with us. That
has nothing to do with this
game. That has nothing to
do with us moving forward.
The Browns are opening
a season on the road for just
the second time since 1999.

In addition to it being the
first game, which is always
special, its also against
Pittsburgh and its also an
AFC North game.
Pettine understands any
game against Pittsburgh,
Baltimore and
Cincinnati has
greater significance.
When people talk about,
Hey, a division
games
worth
one and a half
or its worth two I truly
believe that, he said. For
us to accomplish what we
want to accomplish, it goes
through the division, and
I think most people would
agree maybe Baltimore
and Cincinnati would disagree the road through the
AFC North really does travel
through Pittsburgh. Its an
important game on a lot of
fronts.
For Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer, Steelers
Week has always been
something special. Growing
up in Cleveland, he developed a strong distaste for
anything black and gold at a
young age. He knows what
the Pittsburgh game means
to Browns fans because it
wasnt long ago that he was
one of them.
I have to take the personality out of it, he said. This
is my job. I want to go out
and execute well, but I know
what Steelers week means to

Clevelanders. We hate them.
They hate us. Thats the way
itll always be regardless of
record or whatever it is.
Pettine actually has a soft
spot for the Steel City. He
coached at Pittsburgh, got
married there,
had one of his
children
born
there and has
family living in
Pittsburgh. Hes
been there as an
opposing coach
and knows what
its like when 50,000-plus fans
begin screaming and swinging
those Terrible Towels.
Ive been a part of some
wins there, and theres nothing like going there and
competing. Pittsburghs a
great football town. I see the
passion, the loyalty, Pettine
said. To me, it reminds me
a lot of our fan base. Its a
crowd when they get behind
the team and theyre rocking
and rolling, It makes it very
difficult on a visitor.
Its been especially tough
on the Browns, who havent
won in Pittsburgh since
2003, when quarterback Tim
Couch led them to a 33-13
victory. Theyve lost 10 in a
row there since and Sheard,
for one, would like to see
the trend reversed and the
rivalry revived.
Its time for it to change,
he said. Ive been a part of
programs where weve been
down and changed the pro-
gram. Weve been that guy

thats the bully. I think its
time for us to take that role
of the bully.
The Browns last opened
the season against the
Steelers in 2007, when
Pittsburgh
pummeled
Cleveland 34-7. In 1999,
the Steelers welcomed the
Browns back to the NFL
with a 43-0 bashing.
There have been blowouts and several tight games
in between, but none of them
matter once kickoff arrives
Sunday.
Like Hoyer, Browns safety Donte Whitner was raised
in Cleveland and is aware
the rivalry needs a jolt.
It cant be a rivalry until
both sides throw punches
and win football games, he
said. Its not a rivalry until
we beat them.

Bengals starters played so
sparingly during the preseason that it was difficult to
get a feel for their revamped
offense under new coordinator Hue Jackson.
Everyone will get it see
it at work for four quarters
on Sunday when the defending AFC North champions
open the season in Baltimore,
where the Bengals have lost
their last four games.
Even the players
are curious about how
it will unfold.
I dont know,
quarterback Andy
Dalton said. The
same guys are going to be
running out there, only a different guy calling it. I dont
know how different its
going to be. Well find out on
Sunday.
It is Cincinnatis biggest transition as it tries
for a fourth straight playoff
appearance unprecedented
in franchise history.
Jackson was elevated to
coordinator after Jay Gruden
left to take the head coaching job at Washington. He
has installed a more up-tempo
approach and emphasized the
running game. There have
been a few noticeable changes, such as moving receiver
A.J. Green to different spots
on the field.
Jackson was the offensive
coordinator at Washington,
Atlanta, and Oakland he
also was the Raiders head
coach before returning

to Cincinnati as an assistant
coach for two seasons. The
players know his style and
his personality. The question
is how different Jackson will
be when it comes to calling
plays in key spots of a game.
Weve got this plan down
of what were going to be
doing, so Ive got a good idea
of whats going to be called
at certain times, Dalton said.
He hasnt called a full game
yet for us, but Ive gotten a
good taste of what its going
to be like in the
preseason.
That can be
described in one
word: aggressive.
Jackson
has
emphasized getting to the line and getting
going. He used the no-huddle
during the preseason. He also
put more focus on the running
game with rookie Jeremy Hill
sharing time with Giovani
Bernard.
He coaches aggressively, left tackle Andrew
Whitworth said. I think
its just an attack mode all
the time. Thats his mentality. Even if you have a game
where you have to throw it a
bunch of times, hes going to
find a way to make it attacking and put the defense on its
heels.
One of the most obvious
changes is in how hes using
his top receiver. Instead of
sending Green out to the sideline, hes moving him around
in formations, trying to get
mismatches in the defenses
formations.

NEW KNOXVILLE The St.

Johns volleyball team traveled to New
Knoxville Thursday night and ran into a
buzzsaw, getting swept by the Rangers
25-15, 25-19, 25-17.
The Blue Jays played well but the
Rangers simply played better as you
would expect from one of the elite volleyball programs in the tough Midwest
Athletic Conference.
The scores are not an indication
of how much we hustled and showed
improved play on the court tonight, said
St. Johns coach Carolyn Dammeyer after
the match.
The second set of the night was a
prime example of the determination
shown by the Jays. After New Knoxville
scored first on a kill by Kenzie Schroer,
St. Johns tied the score with their own
slam by Maddie Buettner. As the Jays set
up on the next play, Olivia Kahnys return
with her back to the net to avoid a sideout fell in for a 2-1 lead. The Rangers
scored six points using great play at
the net and an ace by Kalyn Schroer.
St. Johns stopped the Ranger run with
a set by Ellie Csukker to Jessica Geise
for the slam. Kahny was perfect on her
three serves, including an ace, and a kill
by Maddie Pohlman off a Csukker assist
knotted the game at eight. After New
Knoxville scored twice, Pohlman used
Roundup
a light touch as her return tap found a

hole in the Rangers defense. An ace by
Colleen Schulte tied the score again 10
all. New Knoxvilles Madison Lammers
and Pohlman for Delphos traded kills to
keep the score deadlocked.
The Rangers fought back to score a
trio of points, forcing Coach Dammeyer,
as she has done all season, to call time out
to talk to her team. Good coaches know
what to say to their team when they are
down and Dammeyer seems to say
the right things as the Jays responded with a kill by Bekah Fischer off
of an set by Schulte (11 assists in
the match). Both teams had a great
volley back and forth, highlighted
by incredible digs, but ended in
less dramatic fashion as St. Johns got
a hard-earned point on a double hit by
the Rangers. Another competitive volley
followed on the next play with the Blue
Jays scoring on a return tap by Kahey. St.
Johns evened the score at 17 as Csukker
(11 assists) set the ball for a Hayley
Jettinghoff slam.
Things seemed to go right for the
Rangers after that as a serve by Abby
Lageman hit the top of the net and fell in
for the ace. St. Johns stayed tough with
another Kahny kill with an assist from
Jettinghoff. The Rangers scored the last
four points of the game for victory as the
second game ended just like the first on
an ace serve.

ball up through our midfield we are just trying to play it right
over the top to our forwards. We just need a little bit more
determination and I cant teach them that attitude; they have
to have that themselves, added Munson. When they get that
attitude and determination, they work harder and harder. We

Leffels fifth serve was also an ace,
pushing the Ranger lead to 16-9. The
Jays appeared rattled as they committed
two unforced errors and Schroer
served up three more assists for
the Rangers to expand the lead
to 11.
The Lady Jays didnt quit
with a Samantha Kramer assist to
Kahny for the point. Geise served
up three aces from the left corner in cutting the lead down to 21-14. St. Johns
would score on a Fischer kill and an ace
by Gerker but dropped game three 25-17
and lost the match 3-0.
We played an extremely good
match tonight with some awesome
defense against a tough conference foe,
explained Dammeyer. We eliminated a
lot of unforced errors but still had some
when we were starting to make a run.
Kestley Hulihan had 26 digs for
the Jays and Gesie had 16 along with
10 blocks. Maddie Buettner recorded
nine blocks and eight kills while Bekah
Fischer had six blocks with five kills.
The next game for St. Johns (2-4, 0-2
M.A.C.) will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the
Kalida Pioneer Invite against Edgerton.

CONTINENTAL Continental got the only goal from Tyler
Brecht in the 68th minute to defeat Fort Jennings 1-0 in Putnam
County League boys soccer action Thurday in Continental.
The Musketeers lost despite outshooting the Pirates 16-4
and owning the corner kicks 7-3, with Trevor Williams stopping five shots.
Kyle Hellman had two saves for the Musketeers.

Redskins sweep Lady Dawgs

WAPAKONETA Wapakonetas volleyball team swept
Elida 25-20, 25-16, 25-19 in Western Buckeye League action
at Wapakoneta Thursday.
Summer Grogg led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 kills,
Aubrey Williams nine kills, Erin Bowman 14 assists, Megan
Tracy 11 digs and Karmyn Martinez 10 digs.
Wildcats

The hosts had their first scoring try at 31:40 when senior
Kylee Haehn launched one from 25 yards but senior keeper
Sam Wehri (7 saves vs. 11 shots) also was up to the task.
However, on the Red and Whites next look at the goal, they
found the mark. With 28:41 showing in the first half, Haehn
launched an indirect kick from the right wing and found junior
Logan Hamilton on the left post, from where her 7-yard header
found the cords and a 1-0 edge.
At 15:54, the hosts made it 2-0. Keyed by a lead pass
from the right side by Hamilton, she found freshman Kendall
Marquiss on the left side just beyond the center circle and she
did the rest. She juked a defender as she veered toward the
middle and her 1-on-1 effort from 16 yards found the right
side of the net.
Pimpas preserved the 2-0 score at 20:34 of the half as
she stymied a top-of-the-box shot from sophomore Carleigh
Ankerman.
We still have some things we have to work on but were
improving all the time; were not done yet by any means and
thats a positive, Stober added. We have some younger girls
that have needed to step into different positions than they are
used to and playing big roles but with our senior leaders helping the process, they are doing that. Were melding together
veterans and new girls.
The keepers were up to the task in the second half, combining to keep the others offense from scoring.
Jefferson maintained the attack much more than the Jays
and had three efforts in the first 10 minutes of the second half:
a 12-yarder by Marquiss denied by Wehri; a shot just over the
top from the right-wing corner by sophomore Arianna Knebel
at 32:08; and a diving deflection by Wehri at 30:44 on Knebels
15-yard shot.
The Jays had a good opening at 27:33 when Winhover got
loose for a 10-yarder but Pimpas deflected and finally controlled the orb.
The Wildcats caught a break at 15:29 when senior Emilee
Grothouse got an open look from 10 yards in the middle but
her shot ricocheted off the crossbar and the Jays couldnt get
a follow.
Wehri kept the guests within striking range at 7:42 when she
dove to deny a top-of-the-box effort by Haehn.
I think for us, with so many young girls that lack experience or are new to the sport, we have to slow down, Smith
added. We work on things in practice and were improving
but during the match, we forget and panic a little bit; we get
too excited. We have to slow it down for them until they get
confident.
The Wildcats visit Lincolnview at 5 p.m. Monday, while the
Jays host Crestview 5 p.m. Tuesday.
OHSAA
Abbott was a professional
baseball umpire, reaching the
Double A level from 2006-09.
During his tenure as a professional umpire, he spent two
years as an instructor for the
Harry Wendelstedt School for
Professional Umpires. Abbott
has been a registered basketball official for 15 years, having worked multiple OHSAA
state tournaments, and also
has seven years of experience
at the NCAA Division II and
III levels in basketball, working the Division III NCAA
Tournament in 2014.
Abbott is an administrator at Foxfire Community
Schools in Zanesville and is
an elected board member for
the East Muskingum Local
School District, serving in his
second term. He and his wife,

planning, scheduling and
assigning work for the
maintenance personnel,

of city streets, alleys,
curbs, gutters, signs and
signals, sewer collection
system, water distribution system, fire hydrants, sidewalks, public
lands and buildings, cityowned equipment and
major projects in the
City. The Superintendent shall work closely
with the Safety/Service
Director, the Mayor and
other department heads
in determining work project methods and priorities. The Maintenance
Superintendent is responsible for insuring full
utilization of all maintenance personnel and
equipment in the best interest of the City; while
at the same time make
certain that all safety
procedures are strictly
maintained.
Must have a valid Class I
Wastewater Collection
License or higher. Upon
the request of the City,
must be willing to obtain

The Justice Department
launched a broad investigation Thursday into the police
department in Ferguson,
Missouri, following the shooting last month of an unarmed
black 18-year-old by a white
police officer.
The investigation, which
is separate from an existing
federal probe into the Aug. 9
shooting of Michel Brown,
will look for patterns of discrimination within the predominantly white department
and focus on how officers use
force, search and arrest suspects, and treat inmates at the
city jail. The police department said it welcomed the
investigation.
In announcing the action,
Attorney General Eric Holder,
who visited the St. Louis suburb two weeks ago, said he
heard repeated concerns from
community members about
general police practices and a
lack of diversity on the police
force. That experience influenced the decision to seek a
wide-ranging probe into the
department, he said.
I heard from them directly
about the deep mistrust that
has taken hold between law
enforcement officials and
members of the community,
Holder said, adding that other
evidence thats emerged so far
including data about traffic
stops appeared to validate
community concerns.
The inquiry is part of a
broader Justice Department
effort to investigate troubled
police departments and, when
pervasive problems are found,
direct changes to be made.
The department says it has
investigated 20 police departments for a variety of systemic misconduct in the past
five years, more than twice
the number of cases opened in
the previous five years.

NEW ORLEANS BP acted recklessly and bears most of the responsibility for the nations worst offshore oil
spill, a federal judge concluded Thursday,
exposing the energy giant to roughly $18
billion in additional penalties.
BPs market value plummeted by $7
billion after the ruling as its shares suffered their worst percentage decline in
almost three years. By Thursday afternoon, company shares had fallen almost
6 percent to $45.05.
BP PLC, which vowed to appeal,
already agreed to pay billions in criminal
fines and compensation to people and
businesses affected by the disaster. U.S.
District Judge Carl Barbiers ruling that
BP acted with gross negligence deals
instead with civil responsibilities, and
could nearly quadruple what the Londonbased company has to pay in fines for
polluting the Gulf of Mexico.
The judge held a non-jury trial last
year to apportion blame for the Macondo
well spill, which killed 11 men on the
Deepwater Horizon rig and spewed oil
for 87 days in 2010.
He ruled that BP bears 67 percent

of the blame, Swiss-based drilling rig
owner Transocean Ltd. bears 30 percent,
and Houston-based cement contractor
Halliburton Energy Services is responsible for 3 percent.
BP made profit-driven decisions during the drilling that led to the deadly blowout, the judge concluded in his 153-page
ruling. These instances of negligence,
taken together, evince an extreme deviation
from the standard of care and a conscious
disregard of known risks, he wrote.
BP said it would appeal. An impartial view of the record does not support
the erroneous conclusion reached by the
District Court, its statement said.

courts finding that BP acted with gross
negligence and willful misconduct.
The ruling exposes BP to about $18
billion in civil fines under the Clean
Water Act. It also repudiates BPs claims
that it was merely negligent and will
further damage BPs already badly damaged reputation, said David Uhlmann, a
University of Michigan law professor and
former chief of the Justice Departments
environmental crimes section.

CHICAGO (AP) A U.S. appeals court issued a scathing, unequivocal ruling Thursday
declaring that gay marriage bans in Wisconsin and Indiana were unconstitutional, on the same
day that 32 states asked the Supreme Court to settle the issue once and for all.
The U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago was the fourth to hear arguments on the
issue. The decision from a normally slow and deliberative court was released a little more than
a week after oral arguments.
The unanimous, 40-page decision from a three-judge panel blasted the states justifications
for their bans, several times singling out the argument that only marriage between a man and
a woman should be allowed because its simply tradition.
There are bad traditions that are historical realities such as cannibalism, foot-binding,
and suttee, and traditions that are neither good nor bad such as trick-or-treating on
Halloween, the ruling says. Tradition per se therefore cannot be a lawful ground for discrimination regardless of the age of the tradition.
It also laid into another argument from the states that gays should not be allowed to marry
because, on their own, they cant procreate, saying that rationale is so full of holes that it cannot be taken seriously.
Wisconsin Attorney General General J.B. Van Hollen said he would appeal the ruling to the
U.S. Supreme Court.

RICHMOND, Va. Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell
and his wife were convicted Thursday of taking bribes to promote a dietary supplement in a corruption case that derailed
the career of the onetime rising Republican star and laid bare
the couples broken marriage.
A federal jury in Richmond convicted Bob McDonnell of 11
of the 13 counts he faced; Maureen McDonnell was convicted
of nine of the 13 counts she faced. Both bowed their heads and
wept as the court clerk read a chorus of guilty verdicts.
Widely considered a possible running mate for Mitt Romney
in the 2012 presidential campaign, McDonnell was reduced to
living with the familys priest in a church rectory during the
trial. Now he and his wife face up to 20 years in prison for
each conspiracy, fraud and bribery conviction. Sentencing was
scheduled for Jan. 6.
The couples defense strategy depended in large part on
convincing jurors that their marriage itself was a fraud and that
they were unable to speak to each other, let alone conspire to
accept bribes. They left the courtroom separately first Bob
