In using an Oracle database technical support services, often encounter the term
the patch. Now Oracle database patches terms of these explanations do:
Interim Patch / One-off Patch: We often say that a small patch to fix some (few)
months Bug and released patches. This patch test is recommended on a test datab
ase is correct and then installed on the production database.
Merged Patch: merging patches. When there is a conflict between a few small pat
ches, when not installed, you need to provide this patch set. Patch conflict was
mainly due to two or more patches modify the same file, but modify the content
is different.
Bundle Patch: patch set, fixes multiple Bug. Oracle on the Windows platform is n
ot a small patch, only this patch set. This patch rallies periodically publish (
at least on a quarterly basis). This is a cumulative patch set type (cumulative)
, that is, each patch contains all the Bundle Patch rally before. For example, W
indows Bundle Patch 16, it will include all previous 15 Bundle Patch, so we alwa
ys recommend to install the latest Bundle Patch. Oracle's clustering software an
d database software Window Bundle Patch is the same, such as Windows Bundle Patc
h 16 (patch number 16167942, both playing in the cluster, you can also play on t

Critical Patch Update (CPU): published once every quarter, to fix some security
patches, are cumulative type. Has now changed its name to Security Patch Update

Patch Set Update (PSU): published once every quarter, to repair some of the more
serious problems, including quarterly CPU, are cumulative type. Although the de
scription of PSU's version of the database will be used when the first five, suc
h as Database PSU 11.2.0.3.5, but in fact after the kick PSU does not really cha
nge the version of the database, see the version from v $ version or 4 of (11.2.
0.3.0), the first five are still 0. Note that there is no CPU and PSU on Windows
, Oracle's clustering software and database software using different PSU. MOS ca

Patch Set: Set on a large patch release, and fixes more Bug, may contain some e
nhancements (Enhancement). For example, 11.2 is a large version, then 11.2.0.2 i
s a Patch set. This patch set through a rigorous integration testing, but also t
he cumulative type. So we always recommend to install the latest Patch Set.
Diagnostic Patch: diagnostic patch. Sometimes the diagnosis of a problem, in ord
er to obtain more diagnostic information, Oracle's development department will p
rovide a Diagnostic Patch, this patch is not to fix the problem, but to diagnose
the problem.
Composite Patch: From April 2012 to start the Database PSU 11.2.0.3.2, introduce
d a new concept called Composite Patches. This is a new patch, which is differen
t from the other type cumulative patch. If this is the first installation of thi
s patch set, then all the patches included in the patch set will be installed th
is patch set subsequent installation will only install a patch set before the co
ntrast changes and newly added part of the patch.
PSU is a kind of Composite Patch, to PSU as an example to illustrate the first i
nstallation of Composite Patch for PSU 11.2.0.3.2:

By installing a Composite Patch PSU 11.2.0.3.3, only need to install some new ad
ditions patches and changes, do not need to be installed before you installed 11
.2.0.3.1 and 11.2.0.3.2, installed before This part is called the sub-patch:
