ng selebrasyon sang kaadlawan ukon sang anibersaryo isa ka okasyon agud
pasalamatan ang ginahalinan sang tanan nga bugay - ang Mahal nga Dios. Buas
nga adlaw, ginaselebrar naton ang kaadlawan sang aton Mahal nga Iloy.
Sa sini nga adlaw, ginapahanungod naton ang aton panulok sa kay Maria, ang Iloy
sang Dios, ang Ntra. Sra. de la Candelaria. Paagi sa iya padayon nga paghiusa sa iya
Anak, ara sia sa gihapon nga nagatamod sa aton bilang Patrona sang aton komunidad
kag Parokya.
Ang iya ni Maria nga presensya mabatyagan dira sa mga kadalag-an nga natigayon
paagi sa nagkalainlain nga mga bulohaton kag aktibidades nga nagapatimaan sang isa
ka komunidad sang mga tumoluo nga nagapanglakaton sing matinuohon padulong sa
katumanan sang aton handom kag misyon. Sa sulod sang 23 ka tuig, ang aton Weekly
Parish Bulletin, ang Candle Light, amo ang nangin palaagyan agud makadangat sa mga
katapo sang parokya kag sa tanan nga bumalasa ang mga pagtulon-an sang Simbahan,
ang mga balita, ang mga anunsyo kag ang mga panugyan sa pamatasan kag pagtuo
nga nagabulig agod mag-uswag kita sa aton kabuhi nga espirituhanon. Ang Libreria
de Ntra. Sra. De la Candelaria amo ang katuwang sang Candle Light sa handum nga
mahatagan ang tanan sang nagakaigo nga ihibalo, balasahon kag mga bagay nga
nagabulig sa ila pagtubo sa pagtuo.
Indi man naton pagkalimtan ang St. Elizabeth of Hungary Kinder School sa diin
ang aton mga kabataan nga may lamharon nga kaisipan kag ara sa importante kag
delikado nga bahin sang ila pagdaku kag pagtubo ginadihon kag ginaaman para sa isa
ka kabuhi nga nagakadapat para sa isa ka matutom nga anak sang Dios.
Bilang pagsunod sa moderno nga mga paagi sang teknolohiya kag komunikasyon,
ang Website sang Parokya nga amo ang ginabisitahan sang madamo nga mga debotos
kag debotas agud makaangkon sila sang lab-as nga impormasyon nahanungod sa aton
Mahal nga Patrona kag nahanungod sa mga nagakahalanabo sa Parokya padayon

omorrow, September 8, is no ordinary day for the parishioners of Our Lady of
Candles. Aside from the fact that we celebrate the birthday of our Blessed Mother,
we are also celebrating this year the 23rd Anniversary of the longest running
parish weekly paper in Iloilo, Candle Light. As it has been a tradition in Jaro Cathedral
to inaugurate something on the birthday of our Blessed Mother, we also celebrate the
anniversary of Libreria Candelaria, St. Elizabeth of Hungary Kinder School, Our Lady
of Candles Multi-Purpose Cooperative, and the Parish Website. We thank the Lord for
these wonderful blessings which we receive from God through the intercession of our
Blessed Mother.
This years anniversary of Candle Light has as its theme - Candle Light: 23 Years
of Journeying with the Laity in the Light of Gods Mercy through Mary.
We recognize the vital and important role of our weekly paper to the life of our
laity. Many have testified that their faith is enriched and strengthened by reading the
Candle Light. Parishioners look forward to getting a copy of Candle Light every week
because they find it helpful and nourishing for their spiritual life.
On the other hand, we know that the weekly issue of the Candle Light will not
be possible without the active involvement and support of the laity. Hence, our
appreciation also goes to those who, through the years, have always been a part of this
work of evangelization. As the editor-in-chief for a year now, this responsibility may
be burdensome and difficult. Just imagine the pressure of meeting the deadlines every
week! Nevertheless, the past year has been light and easy because of my staff who are
not just skillful and intelligent but most of all, deeply spiritual. They are capable of
finding the meaning and purpose of their sacrifices and suffering as they voluntarily
work for Candle Light. Thanks to the CL staff, namely, Maam Lacuesta, Maam Siacon,
Maam Ching, Nang Lalaine, Doc Bing, Nong Armando, Nong Albert, Evelyn, Sheila and
Bogs who are always willing to help and support. They are our modern saints and
heroes! My gratitude also goes to everyone who generously drop their contribution
during the Sunday Mass second collection. Indeed, we can say that Candle Light is of
the people, by the people and for the people.
Going deeper, the long journey of 23 years has been possible not just because of
the laitys involvement but essentially and more importantly, because of Gods mercy.
As God has always been looking upon us with mercy, we are called to be merciful and
compassionate to other people. This call has become urgent and important especially
in this time that we are preparing for the Apostolic Visit of Pope Francis in January
next year. According to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), the
most distinctive way to prepare spiritually for the coming of Pope Francis is for the
Philippines to become a people rich in mercy. Which may we become merciful as we
venture in building together our parochial house.
23 years of journeying with the laity 23 years of experiencing Gods mercy 23
years of evangelization and still counting all because God is always faithful and
merciful!
On our 23rd Anniversary, we renew our commitment to journey with the laity, to
be a channel of Gods mercy in the spirit of genuine spiritual accompaniment, which,
according to Pope Francis, always begins and flourishes in the context of service to
the mission of evangelization. (EG 173)

A
nother year, another anniversary.
Our beloved parish paper, Candle
Light, has reached another milestone
this month as it inches closer to a wonderful
silver anniversary two years from now. Its
a lot, 23 years of uninterrupted publication
week after week. It would be more
than 1,100 weekly prints, including this
one. Candle Light had run a multitude of
formative topics through these long years.
With the thick volume of printed copies,
they are as diverse as anyone could imagine.
What could be the recurring themes that
are articulated, whether clearly or implied,
in every issue of Candle Light?
I was requested to reflect on this and
for a while, I struggled with the thought. I
prayed for enlightenment and gradually it
made sense. I started by asking that there
could be a purpose why I am writing this.
Or could it be just that one of the regular
writers missed out? Or is it because I had
the privilege of having been part of the very
first publication? I take this moment as an
invitation to walk back to the very first
print. I still have it. I practically re-read
the first issue, Volume 1, Number 1, dated
September 8, 1991 and there are three
insights that stand out.
First, let me say that if anyone would
examine the genetics of Candle Light, it is
unmistakably lay. It is not clerical (as in
priestly). I could recall very well that the
need for publishing a parish weekly paper
came out as one of the needs identified by
the lay during the 1st Jaro Parish General
Assembly last April 28 and May 5, 1991.
And when the time came that this expressed
need would be addressed by actually
publishing it, the lay staff volunteers
provided the inspiration, technical
knowledge and experience to make it
happen. As a witness to its beginnings, I
could testify that Candle Light is indeed a
journey of the laity for the past 23 years.
They responded to their own yearnings. As
we celebrate 2014 as the Year of the Laity,
let Candle Light be a testimony to the laitys
heroism.
Second, Candle Light was dedicated to
Mama Mary. The first print came out on
September 8, 1991. The birth of Candle
Light happened on the birthday of Mama
Mary. I quote directly the Editorial of the
first print: Indeed, there cannot be a better
day for the launching of our Parish Weekly
Paper. There is more to the coincidence in
the date. The birth of Mary is the birth of our
Daniel Rio B. del Rosario, Jr.
redemption. When she was immaculately
conceived, she radically shattered the
darkness of our sinful situation. She has
become our Candle Light illuminating the
way for us, guiding us closer to her Son.
Indeed, Candle Light is a journey of the laity
with Mary.
Third, Candle Light was under
experimental basis for three months. Well,
what we have now in our hands is on its
23rd year! In human terms, we had doubts.
And we had basis for doubting, or so it
seemed. There were no permanent staff.
There was not even an office. There were
no regular donors. But Gods mercy is a lot
larger than all our doubts. And if Candle
Light is a journey of the laity as a church,
it best reflects what Pope Francis would
tell about being church. That the church is
much more than its dogma and teachings,
it is an experience of Gods mercy in our
midst. Pope Francis would say: I think we
too are the people who, on the one hand,
want to listen to Jesus, but on the other
hand, at times, like to find a stick to beat
others with, to condemn others. And Jesus
has this message for us: mercy. I think
and I say it with humility that this is the
Lords most powerful message: mercy A
little bit of mercy makes the world less cold
and more just. I would say from an insider
viewpoint, that every issue of Candle Light
comes to us full of Gods mercy. The lay staff
come and go, and so are the priests involved
in the publication, and still with limited
logistics, Candle Light has weathered all
that with Gods mercy. And I would hasten
to add, that most of the formative topics
reflected in all the issues, reflected Gods
mercy at work in our midst.
Candle Light will continue to be a
journey of the laity with Mary in the light
of Gods mercy. Every copy, from the very
first and this one, bears that truth. And it is
a journey calling us now to action as Pope
Francis would invite us: Together let us
pray to the Virgin Mary that she may help
us walk in faith and charity, ever trusting
in the Lords mercy; He always awaits us,
loves us, has pardoned us with His Blood
and pardons us every time we go to Him
to ask His forgiveness. Let us trust in His
mercy! Let us be renewed by Gods mercy
and let us become agents of this mercy,
channels through which God can water the
earth, protect all creation and make justice
and peace flourish.

The Jaro Parish Youth Ministry (JPYM) invites

eptember 8, 1991 It was Candle Lights
birth twenty-three years ago. This paper
you are holding was a result of the
first ever Parish General Assembly which
recommended, among others, a Parish Weekly
Paper to improve the parishs communication
lines. The name Candle Light was a
spontaneous suggestion and a fitting name
that was given by Msgr. Jose Gamboa who was
then the Parish priest.
The first editor-in-chief, Fr. Rio del
Rosario, and a few lay people who were
experts and experienced in journalism
together embarked on the publication of the
paper with its humble beginnings. There
was no office, no computers, and not even a
permanent staff. There were meetings where
the staff would just sit around a table that was
available in the convent, and much later have
an office but not even a permanent one, since
the CL would transfer office wherever there
was space available.
No computers? The early CL issues used
to be laid-out by a non-Catholic lay-out artist
and the staff would stay with the lay-outing
up to the late evenings, even finishing an issue
just as the church bells were ringing to start
the Aguinaldo Mass. The first fewarticles were
products of manual typewriters, and later on
electric typewriters to donated computers.
Permanent Staff? All these years, the staff
have been volunteers, doing this apostolate
as a labor of love without remuneration.
They just come and go. There was even a time
when the CL copies were folded manually by
old parishioners before it would be ready for
distribution. On its very first few months, the
youth of the parish were tasked to distribute
the paper after every Sunday Mass.
Through Gods Mercy, the CL started
with seed money donated by kindhearted
parishioners. This paper is NOT a commercial
paper, it is NOT for sale. Up to the present, CL
has depended on DONATIONS from generous
parishioners and from second collections
during Sunday Masses.
The Candle Light was and is to be the
main vehicle for information-dissemination
on the life the parish. It is to be the tool for
evangelization, an avenue where can be
vigorously spread the Word of God and an
avenue to contribute to the renewal of the
life of the parishioners. This paper is written
with a heart. The CL staff is advised to speak
fromthe heart, a language wherein everyone
can be attuned to. Article writers are advised
to use words that can be simply understood
by readers of all classes. Articles are to be
light so that these can be grasped easily.
This paper is not to highlight or boast about
ones knowledge or achievement or glorify
someone but an avenue to share ideas in the
simplest terms with humility and meekness.
Having been with Candle Light for its
twenty-three years of circulation, I, myself,
amawed with the fact that it has never missed
a Sunday publication. Every issue that the
reader holds each week has its story to tell
about struggles that were overcome. Past
editors would tell us that the CL has caused
them aching legs, sleepless nights, tons of
Typhoon Frank has not stopped the
publication of CL. I was at the Panorama
Printing House at around 10:00 a.m. when
suddenly the flash flood rushed in. Looking
at its danger, I just left the CL lay-out for
printing. Hurriedly I went out. The water
was already knee-deep and no transport
vehicle would stop to pick me up. So, I went
back and called Fr. Joel Eslabra at the Jaro
Cathedral. Immediately Dave, his driver,
came for the rescue. I prayed fervently that
the automobile would not stack up in the
flood. Dave drove me directly home. This is
my most unforgettable experience during
Typhoon Frank. The CL continues to glow
brightly despite whatever calamity will
occur. The mission continues with the gift
of zeal from Our Lady of Candles to spread
the Good News of her Son, our Light!
Reminiscing the past is all I can do,
Orphaned at an early age yet never have
been an orphan,
For you are there! My heavenly Mother,
My refuge and my way to God!
Always stretching your hands drawing me
near,
Despite my being a sinner,
For me to curl warmly and blissfully on
your lap
Thank you, my heavenly Mother, for the
mercy and love!

For 16 years I was with CL under
six editors since its first organizational
meeting under Msgr. Jose M. Gamboa.
Life with CL was both enjoyable and
stressful. It was enjoyable and gratifying
working with the staff, and when the issue
for the week was finished and ready for
publication and distribution on Friday
afternoon. It was stressful when the
articles were not submitted on time ready
for printing in the press.
Now on its 23rd year, I pray that CL will
continue its mission with the saving help of
our Lady of Candles, and the inspiration
and guidance of the Lord.

The Miracle that is Candle Light
Unforgettable Memories in Candle Light

stress, eyebrows meeting in a straight line
and receding hairlines. Honestly, some priests
would pray not to be assigned at the Cathedral
for fear of being assigned as the CLs editor. Yet,
for every struggle in every issue of the paper,
a heartwarming and rewarding peace comes
as an issue is published and distributed every
Sunday. Each issue has always been better
than the issue before it.
Struggles this paper had tons of it!
There were times when only two people
were left to be the staff of the paper. There
was a time when most of the articles were
reprints. At some point, we almost ran out
of ideas to write and articles and writers
were few. Many times the CL almost missed
a Sunday the misprinting of the word
Tomorrow with Tommorrow as the main
title almost missing a Heartbeat when the
editor was rushed to the hospital due to an
allergic reaction to some food that he ate
when in the midst of final lay-out, there was a
power outage in the Cathedral, the computer,
printer and the staff had to transfer to a
staffs residence so as to beat the deadline
numerous grammar and spelling mistakes
the CL even made an apology for 19 issues for
wrongly printing a wedding announcement
under a grim heading The CLs final lay-
out was just delivered to the press just as the
waters of Typhoon Frank rushed through the
streets of Jaro, yet the next day, Sunday, copies
were distributed just the same.
Every week we struggle to meet the
deadline. If articles do not come on Friday
morning, our panic button is triggered.
When the lay-out artist calls in late that he
would not be available, we tremble. I know
silent prayers for the Candelaria are said in
times like these. Having to come up with an
issue of the paper every week is not easy.
Fromthe writing of articles, to the submission,
editing, lay-outing, printing , logistics each
has a share of its struggle every week. But
then, just the same, with Gods mercy, the CL
has been out every Sunday.
In spite of everything that Candle Light
has struggled through all these 23 years of
publication, every issue that unfolds each
week is heartwarming. The CL has been a
manifestation of Gods mercy, or one can even
call it a miracle (if one only knows the story of
every issue). For a fact, if the CL is not guided
by the Candelaria, I believe many times CL
might have failed to be in circulation. It is to
Gods Mercy and the divine intervention of
Nuestra Seora de la Candelaria, to whom
this papers noble endeavor is dedicated, that
this Parish Weekly Paper has remained in
circulation.
Twenty-three years, from those who
pioneered this publication to the present, is far
more than they have expected for this paper to
reach. Yet, with Gods blessing they know this
is not impossible. For each week alone that
Candle Light is put in circulation, it is already a
manifestation of Gods hand at work.
From the papers humble beginnings
to what it has acquired and reached today is
because of Divine Intervention. Candle Light
is itself a miracle story in our midst.
My first day at Candle Light was
totally unexpected. I was just taking a
peek at the door of the CL office, looking
for someone, when Doc Bingbing Tejada
saw me and invited me to have a seat, and
to please, write an article for the CL. I was
unprepared, but I felt that the Holy Spirit
was telling me to be obedient. And so, I
sat down and asked, What shall I write
about? She answered, Our topic for this
week is about embarking. Embarking?
As in embarking on a journey?, I countered.
Yes, she answered. And so I started to
write down, not knowing whether the
article would turn out nice or disastrous,
and that was the start of my Candle Light
experience. It has been full of many happy
memories. But I just felt that my first few
articles were agonizing to Katy OLeary, our
CL editor then, because they were too long,
and Katy had to cut off many paragraphs
and rephrase many sentences that were
unfit. Those were learning experiences,
indeed. I also cherish the camaraderie,
because there were many of us in the
staff, we were a team, and what a team it
was! Father Joel R. Eslabra, our adviser
and animator, encouraged free-wheeling
discussions. This really ignited the creative
spirit in each one of us! We discussed
Gospel topics for the forthcoming Sunday
issues. The staff who could present the best
topic with the best explanation got to write
the article for the weeks headline. And
then typhoon Frank came and devastated
everything. One of our two computers was
disabled by the flood. There was mud all
over the Convent, including the walls. It
seemed as if everything turned upside-
down! There was an indescribable stench
all over Jaro, mud was knee-deep and
slippery on the sidewalks, and there were
unimaginable stacks of muddy furniture,
cars, clothes, and whatever everywhere one
looked. But we never missed an issue of
Candle Light. We carried on in spite of the
unimaginable havoc. Candle Light became
a mobile publication. We transferred our
computer typing and lay-outing in different
places, including at the internet stations at
the Asensio and at Nang Emma Victorias
building in far Jalandoni Street, and at
Ceff Borromeos internet station. There
were days when only Nang Fe Siacon, Doc
Bingbing Tejada, and I were left to continue
Candle Light for the week, and because Fr.
Joel entrusted us to continue. We were just
too happy to assist him. That post-Frank re-
building was like a post-war rehabilitation
period. That was how it must have felt
during the post-WWII liberation period
of our parents. We also had to contend
with brownouts, computer glitches, hard
disk crashes where we lost all our
previous articles, data and pictures, and
left us to start from scratch. And there was
Jerome, Fr. Joels brod, who was expert at
computers, and fixed things well. But then
we knew God was telling us, I am with you
always, wherever you are. We had always
felt Our Ladys Candelaria Perdon lighted
our work, the Candle Light is in her honor
for her Son, after all. And we had more
easy times. There were the Christmas and
CL anniversary celebrations at Centennial
Resort, at Punta Villa, and at the La Isabelita
Hall, scene of so many CL celebrations.
That was my first year at CL. Then came
the succession of new editors and staff
members, all adding to the enrichment of
the Candle Light experience we all cherish.
Now, Candle Light is available on the
Internet. We also make use of the Internet
through e-mail, receiving thru this medium
Msgr. Gene Velardes weekly article, Fr.
Mickey Cardenas press release. When Fr.
Nat Gentizon was in Daejeon, South Korea,
for the Asia Youth Day with Pope Francis,
we received his e-mailed article imported
from that country. I cannot believe Candle
Light is on its twenty-third year. Jesus,
our Lord, must have been in the thick of
His preparations for His Ministry during
His twenty-third year. But He is now in
Heaven, and we are here on earth, which
means He is entrusting to us His Candle
Light publication while He is away. We,
Jareos, are fortunate indeed, because He
is with us still in spirit, our work lighted
by His Mothers Candelaria Perdon, with
each Candle Light issue, week after week,
as Candle Light continues to proclaim
His Gospel of Love and His Good News of
Salvation.

eptember 8th is the feast of the birth of our
Blessed Mother Mary. Catholic tradition
says this happened nine months, after her
Immaculate Conception on December 8 in the
womb of her mother St. Anne.
We, Catholic Christians, believe that the
Blessed Virgin Mary was preserved from the
stain of Original Sin before, in, and after her
Immaculate Conception.
Mary is the Mother of God and the Mother
of the Church. According to St. Ambrose, Mary,
the Mother of God, is a type of the Church in
the order of Faith, Charity and perfect Union
with Christ.
Through her complete obedience and
surrender to the Will of the Father when
she declared her Fiat, Salvation came into
the world, especially at that moment when
she declared to the Angel Gabriel, I am the
handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me as
you have said. (Luke 1:38)
Mary is the model of kindness and
compassion. When she heard from the
Angel Gabriel that her cousin Elizabeth was
six months in the family way, she visited her

many days and nights. Mary then set out for a
town in the hill country of Judah. (Luke1:39)
Inthe Wedding at Cana, the VirginMother
showed her great concern and charity for the
people by informing her Son, They have no
more wine. Jesus replied, Woman, what
concernis that to you and me? My hour has
not yet come. (John 2:3-4)
However His mother said to the servants,
do whatever He tells you. (John 2:5)
As mother and Son, Mary and Jesus had
that mutual understanding that went beyond
words, and He granted His first miraculous
sign to His mother. Thus, Mary is the first true
and model disciple and Apostle of her Son,
Jesus Christ.
On the occasion of her birthday, we
the community of St. Elizabeth of Hungary
Kindergarten School join the whole Catholic
Christian world in celebrating this joyful
event.
We also remember the patroness of
our school, St. Elizabeth of Hungary who
exemplifies the virtues of compassion,
simplicity and great love for the poor and the
suffering for the sake of the Kingdomof God.
Like Mary, St. Elizabeth of Hungary
preferred to live a life of prayer, sacrifice and
service to the poor and the sick even as she
was born in wealth and nobility.
It has beeninthe traditionof St. Elizabeth
of Hungary Kinder School to celebrate the
feast of the Birth of the Blessed Mother of God
through a Floral Offering. This is done at the
grotto of the beautiful image of Our Lady of
Lourdes at the center of the school grounds.
This activity symbolizes our genuine love
and thanksgiving to God and to the Blessed
Mother. These flowers are symbols of the
beauty and innocence of our young children.
An occasion like this reminds our adults
that their children are like these beautiful
flowers in the garden of life, who are capable
of blooming and becoming such when given
the proper care, attention, inspiration and
unconditional love. With Mama Mary as our
Model and Mother may we be able to live a
meaningful and holy life for the glory of God
in Heaven.

enerally the feast day of
a saint is held upon the
occasion of his death.
Indeed, in the annals of the
Roman Martyrology, the day of
death is often called natalacia
or birthday, referring to the
saints birth in Heaven. In the
Catholic Church, three feast days
are celebrated liturgically. The
first and most prominent is, of
course, Christmas, the birthday
of our Savior, Christ Jesus. The
next one is the Nativity of our
Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The third is the birth of St. John
the Baptist. This is because of
their special and particular
roles in the Salvation history of
mankind.
As to the significance of Marys birth
on September 8, these are the words in the
Liturgy of the Church: Let us celebrate with
joy the birth of the Virgin Mary of whom was
born the Sun of Justice.her birth constitutes
the Hope and the Light of Salvation for the
whole world Her image is the Light for the
whole Christian people. St. Andrew of Crete
also once said, This is in fact the day on
which the Creator of the world constructed
His temple; today is the day on which by a
stupendous project a creature becomes the
preferred dwelling of the Creator. Indeed,
great is that special opportunity that was
bestowed on the Blessed Mother Mary.
But why do we Catholics devoutly
commemorate this event? Our non-Catholic
friends often ask us, and this demands a clear
answer fromus. What is the real reasonbehind
this devotion? Is it okay to celebrate Marys
birthday? Why should we celebrate? Isnt it
obvious enough to point out that a birthday is
worth celebrating because it happens that a
person is special to somebody?
How about Our Lady? Who is that
Somebody who deems her so special and
important? None other than God, Himself.
Being the chosen Mother of the Son of God
is enough to prove that Mary is special and
essential in Gods Plan of Salvation. She was
predestined to bring for us the Savior to the
world in the person of Jesus Christ. He was
the long-awaited Messiah and his mother was
the One spoken of in the Garden of Eden, in
Genesis 3:15.
To what degree of honor did God gave
to Mary? It is great indeed that nobody
on earth was given that kind of privilege.
That the God of the universe, the Creator of
everything, had chosen a simple
girl from Nazareth, among all
the women of the ages and
places, to be the Mother of her
Only-Begotten Son, Himself,
the Word Incarnate. Could He
not have come into this world
in the flesh without a mother?
As to how our loved ones
birthday is something worth
celebrating since the person is
special to us, it is in our good
Faith and on her worthiness
that we also celebrate the birth
of the Mother of Christ, not only
because she is so special to God
and to Christ, but also because
of her ever-important role in
the history of our Salvation, as
stated in Galatians 4:4-5.

Due to our training in school, we
carried the devotion to our homes, and it
was inspiring to see an image of the Blessed
Virgin at the Altar in the home of every
colegiala with the Rosary beads around
her neck or beside her.
When Mr. Lacuesta and I started our
apostolate of the Barangay sang Birhen in
1950, bringing the Holy Rosary devotion
to the mountains and far-flung barrios
with the permission the support and
the inspiration of Msgr. Alberto Piamonte,
I discovered a devotion to Mama Mary
which I am now praying every day,
especially during difficult times. Mother
Mary, Happy Birthday!

D
uring my high school years at the
Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion
in Pototan, which was the first
learning institution of the Hijas de Jesus in
the Philippines, we were taught and trained
to have a strong devotion to the Blessed
Virgin Mary. After our morning classes, we
were brought to church to pray the Angelus.
In the afternoon after classes, we went to
church to pray the Rosary.
All the feasts of our Blessed Mother
were observed. Due to the teachings
and influence of the Spanish Sisters, we
developed a love for the Blessed Virgin, and
most of us wore the habito which we liked
and chose. On Sundays within the school
year, we had the white gala uniform white
blouse and skirt, and long, white veil, and
black shoes with long, white stockings.
However, during Sundays which were not
within the school year, some of us wore
the habit of Our Lady of Lourdes, Our
Lady of the Miraculous Medal, Our
Lady of Mount Carmel, and even the
Mother of Dolors.
During religious processions, we
prayed the Rosary aloud, devotedly,
as the people followed us.

feast is our way of giving Mary honor and
veneration. We Catholics express our love
and devotion to her for we believe that she
is not only the Mother of Jesus but also ours
as well. We further believe that the honor we
give her especially on her birthday is also
our honor to God Who Is the source of all her
greatness. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux once
said, Let us not imagine that we obscure the
glory of the Son by the great praise we lavish
on the Mother, for the more she is honored
the greater the glory of her Son. There can
be no doubt that whatever we say in praise
of the Mother gives equal praise to the
Son. Now after all that I have said, is it not
worth celebrating our beloved Mama Marys
birthday? Certainly, and by all good means!
