The Seafarer Chapter of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI)
continues the Student UAS (SUAS) Competition aimed at stimulating and fostering interest in
unmanned systems, technologies, and careers. The focus is on engaging students in systems
engineeringatotalsolutiontoachallengingmission,requiringtheanalysis,design,fabrication
anddemonstrationofasystemcapableofcompletingspecificautonomousaerialoperations.

8. Scoring Metrics for Graded Elements
8.1. MISSIONTASKS
8.1.1. Themissionissplitintoseveralindependenttasks.Eachtaskisagradedelement
andcomprisesafeatureofthecompetitorssystem.Taskseachhavespecific
measureableachievementcriteriawithanemphasisonthreetiers:objective,
threshold,andincomplete.Emphasishasbeenplacedonensuringthesetasks
areclearlygradable,basedonfeedbackfromstudentcompetitorsandjudges
overpreviousyears.
8.1.2. Teamsmaychoosetocompleteanynumberoftasks.Themoretasksthatcanbe
completedincreasesthetotalnumberofpointsateamearns,butbewarethat
exceedingmissiontimewillresultinalossofpoints.

10.7. TEAMPARTICIPATION
10.7.1. Teamsdonotneedtocompeteinallportionsofthecompetitiontowinprizes.If
ateamsubmitsajournalpaper,butcannotattendthecompetitiondays,they
maystillwinacashprizeforrankingofthejournalpaper.Likewiseateamcould
submitajournalpaperandgivetheiroralbriefwithoutperformingtheflight
missiondemonstrationandstillreceiveprizes.Thismightoccurduetoacrashof
theirairvehicleshortlypriortothecompetition.
10.7.2. Prerequisitesforparticipationintheflightmissiondemonstrationphaseinclude
successfulsubmissionofatechnicaljournalpaper,successfullypassingthesafety
inspectionandpresentingtheoralbriefingFRRwherejudgesassesstheteams
readinessforflightisacceptable.
10.8. TEAMMEMBERSHIP
10.8.1. Fulltimeundergraduateorhighschoolstudentsincludingnomorethanone
graduatestudentshallcomposetheteam.
10.8.2. Ifafacultyadvisor,nonstudentsorAUVSIStaffisusedastheairvehiclepilot,
theyarenotcountedasteammembers.
10.8.3. Membersfromindustry,governmentagencies,oruniversities(inthecaseof
facultyoradditionalgraduatestudents)mayadvisetheteam;however,they
shouldnotdirectlycontributeinthecreationofthedesign,test,paper,or
presentation.
10.8.4. Thefacultymember/advisorwillsignastatementthattheteamconsistedofno
morethanonegraduatestudentandsubmititwiththeteamlist.
10.8.5. Nomorethantenpeoplefromeachschoolwillbecoveredbycompetition
expenses(food,shirts,etc.).Anyadditionalteamoraccompanyingmemberswill
berequiredtopayfortheirexpenses.
10.8.6. Universityparticipantsshallbeenrolledattheirschoolsforatleast12credit
