Je n'ai jamais pr�tendu faire une traduction tout � fait litt�rale. J'ai
un peu suivi mon caprice. Parfois j'ai ajout�, j'ai retranch� parfois;
mais plut�t dans les paroles que dans les id�es. J'ai respect� partout
les sentiments du po�te am�ricain. Dans cette deuxi�me �dition, j'ai
rendu la vie � Evang�line que, dans ma premi�re traduction, j'avais
laiss� mourir, par piti�, en m�me temps que son Gabriel.
Les Acadiens comme les Canadiens ont conserv� le culte du souvenir. Les
uns et les autres sont encore ce qu'�taient leurs a�eux sous le r�gne du
bon roi Henri IV. Dans les campagnes qui bordent le St. Laurent, comme
sur les rivages de l'ancienne Acadie o� sont rest�s les descendants des
fils de la France, le voyageur retrouve le m�me attachement � la foi
catholique, attachement que les pers�cutions les plus cruelles n'ont pu
�branler, la m�me urbanit�, le m�me amour de la nationalit�, amour
sublime qui r�unit toutes les amours et pr�te � une peuple quelque
faible qu'il soit une �nergie et une vigueur qui tiennent du prodige.
Il est �tonnant de retrouver encore des villages, des comt�s m�me tout
peupl�s d'Acadiens, dans cette Acadie o� la cruelle Albion a promen� la
torche incendiaire et le fer meurtrier de ses soldats inhumains.
