Involved with the Palmyra Community Center, a lover of gardening, passionate
about hunting and a resident of Palmyra, Gary LaBerge is the perfect candidate
for this years Canaltown Days grand marshal.
Its a compliment to anyone involved in Palmyra, he said, explaining that the
position is one of honor and recognition. Its a really nice award.
Tom Klemann, the general chairman of Canaltown Days, felt that with LaBerges
history in service to Palmyra he was one of the best candidates for the honor.
Klemann oversees the entire festival and was not a part of the committee that
chose LaBerge, but felt that they made the right choice.
We typically like to honor someone who has made a diference in the
community, he said. Volunteering is one of the biggest ways and I know that
Gary does a lot of volunteering. I think its a good ft.
LaBerge said that he grew up in Pal-Mac and expressed a deep love for his
hometown. His biggest involvement has been the local community center
on 424 Staford St. in Palmyra, for which he has been the president. He now
serves on the Board of Directors.
In addition to the community center, which LaBerge referred to as his pride
and joy, the new grand marshal is also a member of the Palmyra-Macedon
School Board, a previous coach of youth sports and a member of the Western
Presbyterian Church in Palmyra. He has also served on a number of town
committees geared toward community development.
Its home, said LaBerge with a laugh. There are so many people I know. Ive
visited a lot of places across the country and when I come back I think that
there isnt a place that I like better.
In his free time, LaBerge likes to spend time on the land that he and his
wife own. He said that he enjoys gardening, bird watching, hunting, fshing,
canoeing, swimming in his pool and walking the trail along the Erie Canal.
LaBerge said he has been involved in Canaltown Days often in the past and
that he always will be. One of his favorite parts is the very parade that he will
ride in this year.
Its a cumulation of all that goes on Saturday, he said. Thats the pinnacle
and theres always a big crowd.
In addition to the parade, LaBerge also thinks that Canaltown Days is an
opportunity to see people that he doesnt see very often. He enjoys the
homecoming events that are put on by the diferent school classes as well
and especially likes to walk through the car show.
Klemann enjoys the community aspect of Canaltown Days as well.
Theres a lot that I look forward to, he said. Celebration is probably the thing
I look forward to most. I love all the visitors that come so that we can show
them what Palmyra is all about.

No pets, please!
The reasons why pets are not allowed at
Canaltown Days are largely due to the
weather, the volume of people and a lack of
shade and water to help them cool of.
Although your pet may be typically well-
mannered, the large number of unfamiliar
people around the festival environment can
make your pet act diferently.
It is best to keep in mind that some people
arent comfortable around animals and are
even quite frightened of dogs.
There are also those who dont know how to
behave appropriately with a pet and that can
welcome a dangerous situation in a crowded
place. Finally, cleanup after pets and animals
in close proximity to food preparation may
create an unhealthy environment for both
your pet and visitors to Canaltown Days.
Because of safety concerns, along with pets,
no bikes, rollerblades or skateboards are
allowed at the festival.
The popular Palmyra Canaltown Days Car Show is being
brought to you by the Gone Cruisin Car Club. Vehicles
will line up, in the heart of downtown, on Main Street on
Saturday, September 13 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, rain or
shine. No early birds as Main Street will not be closed to
trafc until 9:00 am.
There is no viewing admission. A fne representation of
antique and classic vehicles, 2003 and older, crossing the
span of time, will please every car enthusiast.
Registration begins at 9:00 am. There will be dash plaques
to the frst 225 cars. FLSM judging takes place from 11:00
am to 2:00 pm with awards immediately following. Trophies
are awarded to the Top 25 Stock/25 Modifed vehicles and
best of each.

One short block north of the Canaltown Days festivities
on Palmyras Main Street is the reason for the celebration
the Erie Canal, the waterway that made New York the
Empire State and opened the American Middle West to
the world.
It was no coincidence that DeWitt Clinton, the NYS
Governor responsible for the construction of the Erie
Canal, had been, not too many years earlier, Mayor of
New York City. As mayor of New York, he prepared his
city for the inevitable growth he foresaw. To the north of
the occupied portion of Manhattan island, he laid out a
grid system of roads for the homes and buildings which
would be required. Mayor Clinton is also credited with
urging ship owners to develop and adhere to a regular
schedule of operation. Prior practice was to wait for a full
load before departing.
One cannot help but wonder just when the idea of a
canal across New York State frst occurred to Clinton,
but his actions as mayor and his determination to go
forward after being rebufed by President Thomas
Jeferson indicate its importance to him and for that we
should all be thankful.
The Erie Canal, begun in 1817, opened in sections and was
formally dedicated in 1825. Palmyra, however, became a
canal town in 1823, and was a bustling community and
commercial center. With a population of approximately
3,500, Palmyra was twice the size of Rochesterville, about
20 miles to the west. The immediate success of the canal
led to the construction of the enlarged canal , wider and
deeper than the original. These were the canals of the
draft animals and tow paths. Another forward thinking
Governor, Theodore Roosevelt, was responsible for the
construction of what is technically the NYS Barge Canal,
the one we now today, in 1918. To those of us who love
it, however, it is the Erie.
The canal basin you will fnd one block north of Main
Street came into being due to the eforts of two forward
thinking Palmyra mayors, Jim Elliott and his successor,
Peter Wilson. Thanks to a HUD grant, the basin was
carved out of a wetland area. A boardwalk was built
and the development of todays marina began. In the
years that followed, amenities have been added
informational kiosks, picnic tables and benches, wi-f,
and, most recently, thanks to a grant from the NYS Canal
Corporation, a Comfort Station and picnic pavilion. With
the help of another Canal Corporation grant, a boat
launch is currently being constructed approximately one
half mile to the east of the marina. Interesting note: NYS
Governor Andrew Cuomo was the head of HUD at the
time of the original award that began the construction
in Palmyra.
Owned and maintained by the Village of Palmyra, the
Port of Palmyra marina and the Erie Canal are a part
of Palmyras history and a major asset in the future of
Palmyra, Queen of Canal Towns.

Horse-drawn wagon & carriage parade - Sunday!
As part of the 2014 Canaltown Days celebration, a
special horse-drawn wagon and carriage parade
is planned for Sunday at 2:00 pm.
The parade will start at the Fairgrounds and pass
through Main Street.
The nostalgic demonstration of horses, wagons,
carriages, and people will be an attempt to depict
the role horses played in transportation during
the early canal era.
The horse, while not the only means, was by far the
most popular and speedy mode of transportation
available during the early canal years.
Business depended heavily on horse drawn
wagons to deliver goods to them with which
to work or to sell. The family horse and buggy
was necessary for many reasons. It provided the
means with which to fetch provisions from the
general store, to take the family to church on
Sunday, to visit the neighbors, to go for help in an
emergency, and even to provide the young men
of the family with a suitable courting vehicle.
The fner (lighter) breeds served the family
transportation needs and light commercial duties,
such as transporting the traveling salesman as he
made his assigned rounds.
The heavier draft horse provided the muscle to pull
the heavily-laden freight wagons. Grain, lumber,
and other heavy materials were transported
across the land to and from the canal boats on
wagons pulled by these great animals.
Come out and enjoy the parade!
