Evolution of fashion magazines
Nearly everything about fashion and the way fashion publication is presented
has changed over the years, from writing style, to content focus, and even
advertising. As Technology advanced we started seeing more photographs,
and eventually we started to see color. We also see a lot more advertisements
today.

1838- The First Department Store was Opened
Aristide Boucicaut started the Bon
Marche in Paris and started the first
department store in 1838. The Bon
Marche was officially known and
successful in 1852. The store displayed a
variety of goods at one fixed price,
allowing exchanges and refunds. With
employing up to 4,000 people and
gaining about $300,000 in daily sales.
1848- The First Department Store in America
Alexander Turney Stewart built the
Marble Palace in New York City as the
first department store in America. The
Marble Palace sold imported European
merchandise to women, including items
straight from a fashion show. Items
could ring up to be about $27,000. The
whole stores was 2.5 acres and had 19
floors.
Evolution of Department stores
Once the first department stores started to open up in America, the idea started
to grow and we were finally starting to maximize in both production and profit. It
all also allowed customers to have a variety of fabrics, goods, and even brands
to choose from. This contributed to a great amount of success during the
industrial revolution.
Similarities Today
Although the first department stores were quite different, there are still lots of
characteristics that have stayed the same. For instance, typically when you buy
something you cant do very much to change the price of an item. It was the
same way during the industrial revolution. A customer was not able to trade or
bargain for an item. Also, like the first department store, you are able to
exchange or get a refund on a product or garment if you decide to take it
back.
Differences in Today
Things have changed since the first department stores during the 19th century.
One of these changes is how big a typical department store is. During the 19th
century it wasnt unusual to shop in a building with 15-20 floors. Today most
department stores arent nearly as big and usually only have about 1-2 floors.
What we also dont have today is a giant clock outside every big department
store. During that time they used the giant clocks to meet friends or family
before shopping or to talk about that days events.
