In the event of a radiological incident,
responders need to move instantly to protect
the public and themselves. CANBERRA is

Emergency situations can occur at nuclear power plants,
fuel cycle facilities, research reactors, isotope production
facilities and even hospitals. The causes can be terrorist activities,
res, facility accidents or even severe weather events. Accidents can
also occur during the transfer of radioactive materials from one location
to another. The implications to public safety and the environment can be
serious and widespread.
Emergency response equipment is needed close to the scene of the
incident to measure contamination and potential dose to workers and
emergency response personnel as well as to assess and minimize any
radiological risk to the public. Areas must be checked to make sure they
are safe for workers and to determine if limits must be placed on how
long a worker can stay in them. Also, contaminated items and debris
must be cleaned and checked to see if they are safe to move from the
immediate site to a more desirable location. Radiation levels can change
frequently, so measurements must be made continuously.
