Flammability ratings generally group materials into categories based on their ammability and
give an indication of either:
The polymers relative speed of burning
The polymers ability to extinguish re
The polymers ability not to propagate re
There are typically two main types of test: Horizontal burn (HB), or Vertical burn (V-0, V-1, V-2)
Horizontal Testing (HB)
A test bar is supported in a horizontal
position and a ame is applied at 45
o
to
the end of the specimen for 30 seconds
or until the ame reaches the 25mm
mark. The time is recorded for the ame
to travel from 25mm to 100mm.
Requirements for a 3.2mm thick test bar:
The polymer must not have a burning
rate greater than 38mm/minute
The polymer must stop burning before
the ame reaches the 100mm mark

Vertical Testing
(V-0, V-1, V-2)
A test bar is supported in a vertical position and a ame is applied
to the bottom for ten seconds and then removed until aming
stops, at which time the ame is reapplied for another ten seconds
and then removed.
