The Animal Kingdom
There are many different types of animals in the world. When we think of an animal,
we usually think of something like a cat, a dog, a mouse, or a tiger. They live on land and
in water, All these different animals belong to a group called the animal kingdom. Around
800,000 species have been identified in the animal kingdom
-
most of them are in the
Arthropod phylum.
Many animals are quite similar to each other. Some others are quite different.
Animals can be classified based on their similarities. The animal kingdom can be split up
into two mailr groups, vertebrates (with a backbone) and invertebrates (without a
backbone).
Sorne scientists believe that if they were to identiff all species in the tropical
rainforest, they would find that there are more than ten thousand species of arthropoda.
Many people do not think that clams,
jellyfish,
or earthwoffns are animals. Yet, all of thern
belong to the kingdom of animals.

SURROGATE MOTIIER:
' -
Is the price too high?
Nowadays science has made it possible for a couple who cannot have children to pay
a woman to have a baby for them. These
'surrogate'
mothers sign a contract promising to
give the baby to the couple as soon as it is born in return for a large sum of money. It does
not always work well in practice. As a result, there have been a great number of
'bad'
report about it. This practice is basically unethical, and should be banned for several
reasons.
First, thegractice is completely unnafural because it uses a machine-like, engineered
technology for delivering a baby to this world. Although this idea might not seem right fbr
childless women, having a baby is not an automatic right. This is not the way the nature
rvorks. For this reason, it should not be allowed to be in practice.
Furthermore, the mental aspect of the child when the child is old enough to knorv the
truth should be corrsidered. This could cause a terrible effect on the child's mental and
emotional development. This point is particularly important as it relates to the children's
wel l -bei ng.
Therefore, I strongly believe that surrogacy is wrong, and should be banne( a et
least that there should be stricter rules about it.
29. What does this passage mainly discuss?
A. The positive and negative effects of surrogacy,

B. The solution for a couple who can't have children.

C. The development of tecnology for delivering a baby.
'

D. Getting a lot of money by becoming a sunogate mother.
E. Possible effects on the child's mental and emotional development.
30. The writer is against surrogate mother because....
A. it is unethical
B. it uses a machine
C. it is women' s right
D. it does not cost much
E. it helps unlucky women
31 . What can cause negative effect toward the child's mental and emotional development?
A. Growing up abnormally.
B. Having been born unnaturally
C. Being brought up by a surrogate mother.
D. Being delivered of by a surrogate mother.

that it produces enonnous enefgy and radiates rays. The process of the sun formation,

shrank, the nebula began to spin, which made it flatten out into a disk. The spinning at the
centre was greater than toward the outside of the disk, and the outermost parts sheared off
as rings. The material at the centre heated up rapidly, and then began to emit energy.
The centre of the sun has a temperature of many millions of degress. At this

BLUE OCTOBER

"Hate Me," Congratulations," " Let it Go"
UMI
What do you say to a love song that contains an f-word? Vulgar? Inappropriate? Somehow,
.
BLUE OCTOBER can convey the gloomy mood perfectly in such song "Hate Me." Yotr
will appreciate the depth of the lyrics, as they sound great and have truly something to say.
This band is headed by brothers Justin and Jeremy Furstenfeld. Justin is the vocalist with a
voice similar to Michael Hutchence's of INXS. Jeremy handles the drums. CB Hudson and
Matt Noveskey play the guitar and bass, respectively. Listening further to other songs, you
will realize they will go to any length to make the songs sound unique. There is a wailing
sound ala LINKIN PARK, Britpop influence ala PULP, choir-like background vocal,
emotional lyrics, solo violin, and some disco beat here and there. ln"Congratulations," a
f'emale voice (by singer Imogen Heap) gives a refreshingly different color.
Overall, the songs on this album are very cool to listen to and analyze. Try this album, and
you won' t get foiled.

The case of animals in medical research has many practical benefits. Animal research
has enabled researchers to develop treatments for many diseases, such as heart disease and
depression. It would not have been possible to develop vaccines for diseases like smallpox
and polio without animal in research. Any drug you take today was tried first on animals.
Future medical research is dependent on the use of animals. Which is more important:
the life of a rat or that of a three-year-old child?
Medical research is also an excellent way of using unwanted animals. Last year, over
twelve million animals had to be killed in animal shelters because nobody wanted them as
pets.
Many people cannot
justiff
the use of animals in research because the animals suffer
a lot during these experiments. They are forced to live in small cages, and they may be
unable to rnove.
In fact, there is much unnecessary research carried out. Animals have the same rights
as humans' do to be able to move freely and not to have pain or fear forced upon them.
Researchers must find other ways to do their research. They can use cell cultwe and
computer modelling, for example. There should be no animals in research laboratories at
al l .
What is the text about?
A. An information about the use of animats in research
B. An argument about the use of animals in medical research.

A. Animals help researchers to develop treatments for many diseases
