Industry sector Applications Petrochemicals, oil and gas Pumps, compressors, soft starters, electrical submersible pumps, extruders, blowers, mixers Water Pumps, blowers, aerators HVAC Chillers, fans Power generation ID fans, FD fans, feed water pumps, transfer/booster pumps, conveyors, centrifuges, wind turbines Cement and mining Mills, crushers, pumps, fans, conveyors Paper and pulp Vacuum pumps, chippers, reners Metals Fans, pumps Variable frequency drives (VFDs) regulate motor speed to control the ow and pressure of blowers or pumps without dampers or throttling valves. This results in energy savings and no output waste. VFDs also provide a soft start to the motors, reducing the stress on driven load and resulting in lower maintenance costs. A VFD manages power based on actual demand and uses only the energy required by the driven equipment to provide valuable energy savings. When starting large motors with VFDs, current inrush peaks are eliminated. The VFD gradually ramps the motor up to speed by varying output voltage, current and frequency for a soft start. Key benets Simpler, smaller and lighter, while limiting the supply harmonics and increasing the motor insulation life Reduced heat load and smaller space and HVAC requirements in the control room Lower transportation costs due to the smaller size and low weight Easy power module replacement Common building blocks reduced spare parts cost and lower cost of ownership Power scalability Enclosure and doors reinforced against arc ash effect Equipped with over-pressure relief vents The MV4 Series utilizes rugged IGBT power modules that provide high reliability with a low life-cycle cost. The modular design includes common power modules that are used for both Active Front End (AFE) and inverter.
The standard power module reduces the overall MTTR (module replacement in ve minutes) and increases the availability of the drive. In that case, the VFD control will determine the failed power section, isolate it and restart into the spinning motor. The VFD output power is reduced, and the motor load is limited to the VFD available power. The VFD can then be repaired during a scheduled downtime.
Three cables in; three cables out Top, bottom or both cable entry/exit Quick installation for lower cost of ownership Less process downtime for greater plant output In addition to power channel bypass the VFD can be supplied with an optional N+1 redundant power channel. With this option, the VFD will continue to operate at full power in the event of a power channel failure. Ability to transmit power back to the utility lines, helping to save energy Inherent braking capability to slow high inertia loads quickly such as ID fans without the need for braking resistors Excellent ability to overhaul loads such as downhill conveyors Modular construction Arc ash protected design for personnel safety Transformerless AFE design The transformerless design delivers higher efciency for greater available power. Low losses reduce air-conditioning requirements in the control room and overall cost of ownership. Quick and easy installation Four quadrant operation Power channel bypass option VFD can operate at reduced power with a failed channel. The MV4 Series operates continuously and provides available power to the motor at a lower input supply voltage (up to 70% of nominal voltage). The MV4 Series offers the ability to catch and take control of a spinning load without any damaging torque impacting the equipment if started while the load is already spinning. Standard control interface offers digital inputs/outputs and analog inputs/outputs as standard. Each of these inputs/outputs can be programmed to a variety of different functions for exibility. Touchscreen operator interface allows for quick, user-friendly programming. Screens for fault parameters and meters are user congurable. The MV4 Series drive can be programmed for up to three critical frequency bands and ride-through these without any resonance issues. Most centrifugal pump and fan applications are sized for worst-case operating conditions and typically operate well below the full speed and full power point.
The MV4 Series drive is supplied with a user-congurable economy-mode setting for applications larger than single channel 1250 HP/1 MW. The VFD control initiates the standby of parallel power sections that are not required to meet the operating load conditions, increasing the overall efciency and reducing power consumption. For example, if a fan is operating at no more than 88% of the rated speed, the load requires 68% or less of the rated power, allowing the drive to conserve energy by placing one power channel in standby.
