Non-contact, Optical Measurement

PSV-400, the 4
th
generation design of Polytecs
Scanning Vibrometer system, incorporates more
than 15 years of our technical expertise and user
input. At the heart of every Polytec PSV-400 system
is the laser-Doppler vibrometer a precision optical
transducer used for determining vibration velocity
and displacement at a fixed point. The technolo -
gy is based on the Doppler-effect; sensing the fre-
quency shift of back scattered light from a moving
surface. Please find more details of this technology
on: www.polytec.com/vib-university
A Full Range of Application Fields
The PSV-400 is designed to scan both small (mm)
and large (m) structures of all kinds. Even demand-
ing applications such as measurements on red-hot
components, rotating surfaces, complex shapes,
delicate structures or ultrasonic devices are all made
possible at working distances between 80 mm and
100 m. Depending on the chosen configuration,
the PSV-400 supports vibration frequencies up to
24 MHz, vibration velocities up to 20 m/s, and
accelerations up to 9 million g.
The PSV-400 can be upgraded to the high speci-
fication PSV-400-3D Scanning Vibrometer, suitable
for making 3-D measurements. More info:

Easy and Intuitive to Operate
Start a measurement with the PSV-400
within just a couple of minutes. This is
made possible by a quick setup, an intui-
tive definition of the measurement grid,
a clear step-by-step user guidance and
fully automated measurement at up to
30 points/second.
Non-contact and Surface
Independent
The system is non-contact, so there is
no need to attach sensors or run cables.
Vibrations are measured exactly as they
occur, without any interference caused
by the surface features. Measurements
can be made accurately from large work-
ing distances with ease.
Visible, Secure Laser Beam
The laser beam is visible, so you can see
where you measure. There is no need for
a dedicated lab or a laser safety specialist.
Stay on Top of Things
You can measure within fields-of-view of
1 mm x 1 mm* up to many square meters
at a large measurement point density
using a live video camera. The laser can
autofocus and the scanners achieve
up to a 40 scanning angle.
Accurate Localization
The PSV-400 exclusively measures struc-
ture-borne vibration in the direction of the
laser beam. This allows the source
of noise and its location to be clearly
identified, without reflections and with
frequency independent resolution.
High Frequencies
Traditional vibration measurement tech-
niques have an upper limit in the kHz
range the PSV-400 goes beyond this.
Configurations are available for virtually
any application due to the linear frequen-
cy response from the acoustic range into
the high ultrasonic range at 24 MHz.
Flexible Geometry Data
The Geometry Scan Unit* allows users
to automatically generate a three-dimen-
sional point grid of the test object which
can be exported into other software
applications. Alternatively a 3-D plot can
be imported from an existing FE model.
Cost-effective and Allows
Seamless Integration
Quick measurements can be achieved
with processes that can be automated to
save time. The open system architecture
allows the Scanning Vibrometer to be
integrated perfectly into any develop-
ment environment.
When Everything is Turning:
the Derotator
Track rotating surfaces and lock onto the
RPM even when it is changing with
the PSV Derotator*. This smart optical
system allows rotating objects to stand
still optically. Deflection shapes, which
could previously only be shown in simu-
lation, can now be visualized.

Interactive Setup
User-friendly drawing tools help you
de fine the shape, orientation and point
den sity of the grid on the video image
of the object. Absolute geometry can
either be read in from CAE/FEM files or
can be measured directly on the object
under investigation using the Geometry
Scan Unit*. The preferences for band-
width, frequency resolution, vibration
Making Measurements with the PSV-400 is Simple
excitation and channels are simply defi-
ned in a dialog. The PSV only requires
one setup for all measurement points.
Settings that have been saved from pre-
vious measurements can be loaded by
a simple mouse click from the project
browser. The signal generator controlled
by the PSV software ensures precisely
defined vibration excitation.
Quick Scan
The laser beam automatically scans the
whole grid and makes a vibration meas-
urement at each of the predefined points.
While doing so, the laser is always opti-
mally focused; the signal-to-noise ratio is
permanently monitored and optimized.
During the scan, the time responses and
frequency spectra of the vibrometer and
reference signals are displayed.
In the case of broadband excitation, the
PSV-400 records the complete spectrum
for every measurement point and all
deflection shapes of the measurement
surface.
The FastScan mode* enables deflection
shapes to be determined in the shortest
possible time (hundreds of measurement
points in a few seconds).

3-D Animation
Perfect Visualization
The PSV software package provides an
informative animation of the vibrations
measured. The deflection shapes can be
color-coded as 2-D or 3-D graphics for
display purposes. Frequencies of interest
can be easily selected from the spectra
using a cursor. The video image itself can
be animated in 3-D to show exaggerated,
life like motion of the structure. Animated
profile slices also help you to understand
the vibration in detail. Response to tran-
sient events can be shown in high resolu-
tion slow motion by using time domain
animation*. For every individual measu-
rement point, the per tinent spectra,
transmission func tions, coherence and
time signals* are avail able for analysis.
The graphics and animations can be
easily used in impressive reports and
presentations.
Flexible Analysis
The Polytec signal processor is a high
performance analysis tool similar to a
spread sheet which makes numerous
math ematical and statistical operations
available for individual pieces of data
or whole data sets. Data from other
sensors can simply be imported and
linked to the vibrometer data. Using
standardized export filters or the Polytec-
FileAccess open interface, external soft-
ware packages or your companys inter-
nal software can access the measurement
data for modal analysis, sound field or
power flow calculations.
