III. Text-Book: Manual for Pharmacy Technician, Book and
Workbook ASHP and SFRIX Drug Cards
IV. Dates: December 2, 2009 to February 3, 2009
V. Wednesdays: 9:00am to 3:30pm
VI. Grading. You must receive a 75% average in order to pass this
class. There will be quizzes for each class meeting that will be
given at the start or end of each class.
The break-down of the grades are:
Quizzes 35%
Midterm 20%
Final Exam 25%
Assignments 20%

If you miss a quiz due to lateness or absence, you will not be allowed
to make it up. If you miss the midterm or final exam it is your
responsibility notify the instructor within 24 hours of the exam. If you
do not do so, you may not be allowed to make-up the exam.

VII. Attendance. The Allied Health Department has a very strict

attendance policy that will be enforced. If you miss 10% of the
class (9 hours or three classes you will be placed on probation).
At this point your name will be given to the Coordinator of Allied
Health and you will need to meet with her in order to return to
class. If you miss 20% of the class (18 hours or six classes) you
will be removed from the course and you will not receive a
refund. You are entitled to present your side of the story to the
Coordinator who will render a decision. You have the right to
grieve any decision that is made. Lateness will be accumulated
in minutes. If you are 45 minutes late three times this will be
considered 135 minutes of absences or 2 hours and 15 minutes
of absence.

VIII. Academic Honesty. Cheating is defined as using someone else’s

work as your own. This would include copying from someone
else’s test, copying from a book or other source without
permission. Cheating is not allowed and based on the college
policy it may result in a zero on the project, removal from the
program or even expulsion from the college. Anyone who is
caught cheating will be required to meet with the Coordinator
and the instructor. The Coordinator in conjunction with the

 instructor will determine the consequence. You have the right to
grieve any decision made.

• Basic Math for Health Care Workers
• HIPAA
• CPR for HealthCare Providers

Students begin to learn the role of the Pharmacy Technician in a

pharmaceutical setting. This is the first of two courses leading to national
certification as Pharmacy Technician. Topics include the roles and
responsibilities of the pharmacy technician, drug classification, dosages,
the history of drugs in the US, and legal and ethical issues surrounding
drugs/medications, and names, usages, contraindications of 100 drugs.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

(1) Use appropriate terminology in discussing pharmaceuticals.

(2) Demonstrate proficiency in reading and filling prescriptions.

• Handout on reading, interpreting and filling prescriptions
