You may be wondering who the guy is on the
cover of this album. I know it looks like some-
one that just crawled out of the Deep Purple
road crew tour bus, but I can assure you thats
me and thats my hair - age 16 in North Van-
couver, Canada. The photo was taken by my
friend Ray in the courtyard at my school dur-
ing a break from the art/photography class
we were in. We were messing around with an
old Soviet 35mm Zenit camera, taking pho-
tos of each other for a laugh. The teacher
never judged the photo, but in fairness to the
teacher, how was he to know it would be on
an album cover 40 years later?
While trying to work out what the right album
cover was for this collection of songs, this im-
age seemed a fitting portrait, as much of the
music on this album is more or less from this
time period and most of it would have been
on the radio. It was the time when I had fully
decided that music was the thing for me, even
football, which was my other passion, start-
ed to become second place. All those years
later, nothing has really changed except the
hair got shorter. Anyway, this is exactly what I
looked like in the mid 1970s when my family
returned to Canada, from living in the Middle
East.
I love loud guitar music; bands like Deep Pur-
ple and Led Zeppelin was the kind of music
that was huge on the radio back then, and
eventhoughI could not afford to buy a lot of
records, hard rock got me and I was hooked.
It was a fantastic time for guitars: Black-
more, Page, Clapton, Ronson, Townsend and
there was music from The Who, David Bow-
ie, Humble Pie, and their predecessors the
Beatles and The Rolling Stones, just to name
a few. Heres me practicing Bad Company
songs at home, and enjoying all the American
music of Alice Cooper, CCR, CSNY, Simon
and Garfunkel and Janis Joplin. Stevie Won-
ders Songs in The Key of Life was a big hit
at my house; my brother and Iloved his music
and we went to see him for our first concert
together in Vancouver, in about 1975. In fact,
I think the first time I liked my voice was walk-
ing to school singing a Stevie song to myself
(Im glad no one else heard that).
So why not do a hard rock album? I would
have loved to have done one, but this album
came about because I got asked by producer/
musician David Foster, now the head of Verve
Records, to do an album of covers with him.
His criteria was that the songs had to have
Tracks of my
Years
been top ten hits in the USA, so there goes
my rock album straight away. As a result it
took a long time to convince me to do this,
because in my eyes, most original recordings
were sacrosanct, and the definitive versions
shouldnt be touched unless you were just
playing them live for fun. Im no stranger to
covering a song live, recently one of my Japa-
nese fans sent me four CDs of cover songs
recorded live from bootlegs, however, there
are massive exceptions to the rule and many
artists have done extraordinary things with
songs of others, there are too many to list.
We did about 3 months of recording, spread
out over the course of 2 years. We tried some
originals co-written by Jim Vallance and my-
self, but only one made it She Knows Me
and the rest of this album is a mish-mash of
songs I knew from the 70s and not necessar-
ily songs I would have paid much attention to
at the time, but they stuck with me and it was
fun to visit them.
Why do an album like this now and not be-
fore? Ive asked myself the same question
many times. My manager Bruce has been on
me to do a record like this for decades. Do
an album of Sam Cooke songs hed shout
at me, but his voice is so great that I always
thought Sam Cooke covers were never as
good, though I wish I could sing Tennessee
Waltz as good as him. Making the selection
of the songs for the album took a long time,
and we recorded all kinds of songs until the
songs sort of presented themselves, or sound-
ed different enough from the originals. Nev-
er My Love became one of these recordings
that we sort of used as the benchmark. On
Lay Lady Lay Dylan sang the verses an oc-
tave lower than this new version of the song,
but I reckoned it sounded different enough
to make it on the album. There are a couple
of songs here produced with Bob Rock, who
I have to credit for being the one who tipped
the scale in getting me to agree to this. His
words were make a record you like and you
will want to go and tell everyone about it, I
couldnt argue with that. Plus it was exciting
to get asked to make a record by an American
record company, something Id not had since
the 1990s.
Radio was king when I was a teenager. I used
to hide my transistor AM radio under my pil-
low waiting for Born To Be Wild by Step-
penwolf or Mississippi Queen by Mountain,
or Killer Queen by Queen. And radio didnt
discriminate back then, youd hear McCart-
neys Admiral Halsey straight into Kiss
and Say Goodbye by the Manhattans. AM
radio would play rock and pop, but also R+B. I
didnt know Bobby Hebb sang Sunny when
I was a youngster, but you couldnt escape the
song, it was simply everywhere in the 70s.
The same goes for all of the songs on this
album, they were just in your head and ines-
capably so. If you dont know some of these
songs, go and check out the originals, many
of them are now ingrained in our fabric. I
hope these versions do them justice, and you
enjoy the interpretations Ive done.
