SUMMATION OUTLINE OF THE APPLICATION OF LEARNING SEQUENCE
TECHNIQUES TO PRIVATE PIANO INSTRUCTION




I. DISCRIMINATION LEARNING

A. Aural/oral
1. Sing rote songs.
2. Sing (echo) tonal patterns in major and minor tonality, and chant (echo0 rhythm
patterns in duple meter and triple meter.
3. Move to enhance understanding of tempo, meter, and style.
4. Play patterns on the keyboard.
5. Explore the keyboard.

B. Verbal Association
1. Attach tonal and rhythm syllables to the patterns that have already been learned at
the aural/oral level of learning.
2. Play the patterns on the keyboard, hands separately and then together.
3. Learn the terms micro beat and macro beat.
4. Play three-note finger exercises.

C. Partial Synthesis
1. Combine tonal patterns in scales and triads.
2. Extend rhythm patterns to six or eight macro beats. Use five-finger exercises,
hands separate then hands together.
3. Play rote songs at the keyboard.

D. Symbolic Association
1. Learn to read familiar tonal patterns and rhythm patterns.
2. Practice writing familiar tonal patterns and rhythm patterns.
3. Create new tonal patterns and rhythm patterns based upon familiar patterns.
(Bridge to Creativity/ Improvisation).

E. Composite Synthesis
1. Audiate and read series of familiar tonal patterns and rhythm patterns in a familiar
and unfamiliar order.
2. Read, write and play familiar songs.
3. Create songs, using familiar tonal patterns and rhythm patterns in an unfamiliar
order.
4. Introduce Mystery tunes (Songs familiar to the student, written out in musical
notation with no title. The student must identify the title of the sing after audiating
it.)
5. Practice scales and triads.


II. INFERENCE LEARNING

A. Generalization
1. Aural/oral Identify tonal patterns or rhythm patterns as being same or different.
2. Verbal Echo, using rhythm syllables or tonal syllables, patterns that were
performed by the teacher using a neutral syllable.
3. Symbolic Read, write, and play tonal patterns or rhythm patterns.

B. Creativity/ Improvisation
1. Aural/oral Play or sing tonal patterns and chant rhythm patterns in response to
different tonal patterns or rhythm patterns sung or chanted by the teacher.
2. Symbolic Write, then play, the tonal patterns or rhythm patterns from the
creativity-aural/oral level of learning.

C. Theoretical Understanding
Learn the terminologies related to discrimination learning.
