Stop Pot

In November, Florida will vote concerning Amendment 2 to

legalize marijuana for medical purposes. We are not just
dealing with a law, but with moral issues and dangerous
consequences. Our state is indeed, breaking bad, with a
majority polling in favor of the amendment. This opens the
door for recreational pot.
The law would be bad because of fve reasons given by
www.voteno2.org that allows so-called caregivers to
dispense medical pot, but they are not required to have medical training and
can be anyone who is at least 21-years old. Usually, a caregiver is a medical
professional or a responsible family member taking care of a loved one. We are
in danger of drug dealers doing the dispensing.
The amendment places no restrictions on the location of pot shops. The
Department of Health is to register and regulate the Centers. Nowhere does
the amendment list criteria to prohibit sales. Even alcohol sales are limited to
certain distances from schools. The amendment does not require a doctors
prescription to obtain marijuana. The physicians certifcation is simply a
written document signed by a physician that the person has a medical need.
The debilitating medical condition lists some serious diseases, but also other
conditions.
Teens and children will be able to legally purchase pot without the parents
consent, because Amendment 2 gives no age restriction. A qualifying patient
has been diagnosed, which could simply be any condition as designated by
the caregiver.
Amendment 2 grants huge immunity: they shall not be subject to criminal or civil
liabilities or sanctions under Florida law. Legal recourse will not be possible in
the event of harm. Even the Florida Chamber of Commerce feels that this could
make the states legal climate worse.
Insights have been provided by one of our new church members who served as
a Federal Agent in Colorado. The state has seen a 7% increase in crime after
the frst six months of legalization. Impaired driving accidents have tripled, along
with hit-and-run. Over ten deaths have been attributed to the drug. Ninety-three
percent of medical permits in Colorado went to severe pain with no specifc
illness diagnosed primarily to ages 21 30. The hospital ERs have seen a
huge spike in children who have eaten cookies and candies spiked with pot.
Activity in homeless shelters has doubled. Panhandling and unemployment is
at an all-time high. This is not Rocky Mountain High.
Current pot is stronger than that in earlier decades. It is not primarily a drug
prescribed for people in unbearable pain or on the verge of death. Only 2% of
those prescribed for it in Colorado suffer from cancer, and only 1% from HIV/
AIDS.
Weed is a gateway to stronger drugs. According to research from Northwestern
University, young adults who smoke pot exhibit brain abnormalities with the
nucleus accumbens and the amygdala being affected. These are the parts of
the brain most responsible for decision-making, motivation, and processing
emotions. Users indicated abnormalities of shape and density in the amygdala,
according to Dr. Hans Breiter, even if smoked once or twice a week. Our bodies
are a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:18). May Jesus be Lord of our
bodies, decision-making, and community.
