Development Of An Inspection Robot For Transmission Line
Abstract
In an electric power system, a fault is any abnormal electric current. For example, a short circuit is a
fault in which current bypasses the normal load. An open-circuit fault occurs if a circuit is interrupted
by some failure. In three-phase systems, a fault may involve one or more phases and ground, or may
occur only between phases. In a "ground fault" or "earth fault", charge flows into the earth.
The prospective short circuit current of a fault can be calculated for power systems. In power
systems, protective devices detect fault conditions and operate circuit breaker and other devices to
limit the loss of service due to a failure.
The thermopile array is like an array of IR thermometers, but since they are micro machined, they
are arranged as a grid within a small sensor. The thermopile is capable of detecting objects and
bodies emitting IR radiations in the wavelength range of 2 to 22um, which is the wavelength for
radiated heat. Thus a thermopile is capable of extracting the details of sources of heat, within a
certain area. With the data from the thermopile array and by making a temperature histogram of a
certain area, a human presence can be ascertained. This is the basis of the project.
In this project using a robotic vehicle we can detect the transmission line fault. In this a thermopile
sensor is used to sense the temperature of the transmission line and also the fault occurred due to
the lighting or overload. For this the thermopile is interfaced to a microcontroller based robotic
vehicle which also has RF connectivity to do information exchange with a Power distribution center
A robotic module will be having a thermopile sensor to sense the temperature in a transmission line.
If there is any temperature deviation due to any faults occurred in transmission line, it will detects
and sends the information to the control center using wireless communication regarding
temperature level. Thus the temperature deviation, open circuit condition can be informed to the
control center to avoid any damage to the transmission line.

Existing System
1. Maintenance of transmission and distribution lines trouble free is one of the daunting tasks
of the EB department
2. The transmission lines are located in far off places in remote corners of towns, cities and
villages. In all these cases its very difficult to appoint a person to monitor those transmission
lines.

Proposed System
1. Detect faults in remote transmission lines
2. Immediately transmit any fault information to the Electricity board.
