1.0 Introduction

Innovation is a process where a novel product is being produced and it also does not
exists in the market before. Therefore, Helium Bag is the teams innovative product
which is consider new and unfamiliar by the customers in the market. Thus, the team
introduced it. The target market is children, teenager, traveller, motorcyclist and
climber. The Helium Bag is a combination of a bag with solar panel, universal
electronic charger, reflective pad and helium gas that stored inside polyvinylchloride
(PVC) and aluminium container

1.1 Background and Purpose what are the current problems

The objective of the team is to produce an innovative product that can change the life
of people to become better.. Moreover, the purpose of this helium bag is to solve
some current issue that faced by the society nowadays such as heavy school bag,
electronic devices with inconvenient charging method, and risks posed when
travelling at night due to lack of visibility. For this helium bag, it is lighter compare
to normal school bag as it contains helium gas. Helium gas is a type a gas which is
very light and environmentally friendly. Thus we make use of this helium gas to make
the heavy bag less heavy to overcome the overweight children school bag. Apart from
that, helium bag provide solar panel, battery and universal electronic charger which
means it can generate electricity under sunlight and stored inside the battery to
provide charging for the electronic devices regardless at night or morning. Therefore,
Helium Bag brings convenient to people who always need to their electronic devices
such as laptop and mobile phone. Furthermore, Helium Bag attaches with reflective
pad which means it has same concept and function as reflective jacket. The user of
helium bag can easily be detected by the driver at night, so this Helium Bag is
effectively to reduce the road accident. Nevertheless, this is a useful bag that can
bring a lot of benefits to the society.
1.2 Scope

In order to carry out this inno, the team has gone through three process of the
Innovation Value Chain (IVC) such as Idea Generation, Idea Conversion and Idea
LFSC004 Innovation and Change Page 2 of 34
Diffusion. During the Idea Generation process, the team was form and several
brainstorming session can conducted successfully to generate creative and innovative
ideas. For the Idea Conversion process, the idea selection and idea development was
done by using Item by Item, Spend $ 100 and Six Thinking Hats techniques. Lastly,
the feedback that obtained from the targeted customer will be analyse and evaluate
during Idea Diffusion process. Moreover, Helium Bag will also be commercialized in
on completion of this process.

1.3 Methodology

The useful information and data about this Helium Bag was collected through the
primary and secondary sources. For the primary sources, an interview was conducted
successfully with a Chemistry lecturer who works in Swinburne University of
Technology (Sarawak Campus), Mr. Jason Jong Yang who is willing to share his
information about the way to store the helium gas. He also proof that enough helium
gas can lift up the things by reduces their weight. Apart from interview, the secondary
sources ware obtained through the article from webpage. From the article from the
webpage, we can conclude that Helium Bag is an innovative product which does not
exist before. Besides that, we also refer to the marketing price of helium gas in our
country based on the article from the webpage.

2.0 Idea Generation

LFSC004 Innovation and Change Page 3 of 34
In this idea generation process, a list of creative and innovative ideas should be
generated. As the old saying says no man is an island, a team is very important as
we can work together to come out with more valuable ideas within a short period.

2.1 Formation of Team

The team was formed by Ting Yoon Chuan, Winfred Wong and Ting Goa Loong. Our
lecturer, Ms Helen Chua stated that a team between three and four people must be
form to do this report. Therefore, three of us were decided to form a team because we
are friends since previous semester. We are in the same group and class because we
are taking the same course, which is Foundation in Science and Engineering Semester
one, so we knew each other very well. We are able to form a group as all the members
have different ability, interests and background.

The team members ability, interests and background is stated below:

Ting Yoon Chuan - He is the team leader. He has leadership ability as he was able
to guide and lead us on the right track within this project. He
comes from Bintulu. Besides that, he was the captain of his
schools robotic team which represented Malaysia to attend the
robotic competition that was organized by Taiwan, and he
successfully leaded his team to won the Best Teamwork Award
for the competition. He is interested in producing the latest
products.

Winfred Wong - He has teamwork ability as he always works together and has a
good interaction among the group members. He comes from
Kuching. Besides that, he was one of team members which
represented Kuching to attend the Chinese chess competition in
Miri. Lastly, he is interested to make and change complicated
things become simple.
Ting Goa Loong - He has the ability to analyse, evaluate and practice for the
chosen idea. He comes from Sibu. Besides that, he was the
deputy-president of the Taekwondo club and him frequently
LFSC004 Innovation and Change Page 4 of 34
represent his club to attend the competitions that held in other
school. Therefore, he can east to determine the strength and
weakness of the ideas. Furthermore, he is interested to find out
the possible ways to achieve the goals.

According to Belbin team roles (n.d.), each members of the team must defines and
realize their personality in order to find out the potential strength and weakness of the
team and solve it. Through the prolonged period observation, each of us had play
different roles as stated below:

Table 1: Characteristics of Team Members

The team was considered effective as we had an innovative and good leader, good
interaction among each other and good in exploring the ideas. Nevertheless, some
roles like finisher, coordinator and specialist are not included in the team.

LFSC004 Innovation and Change Page 5 of 34
After we comprise the team, we continued to conduct our project by applied
Tuckmans (1995) Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing Model. This is a useful
model to describe the team development.

Forming A team with three people was formed. Ting Yoon Chuan was
selected as a team leader while Winfred Wong and Ting Goa
Loong were the team members. Besides that, the teams objective,
logo and motto were set up, so we are clear with the teams goals.
Storming Not all the things went on smoothly, some disagreement and
conflict occur between each member when we finalize the idea.
Norming During the discussion and meeting, we are able to compromise
with the disagreement and conflict that had been carry out
because we are more comprehend and understand with each other.
Besides that, we also build a strong bond with each other and
decided to work together to achieve our goals.
Performing Therefore, we have a completed and effective group structure
which help us more easily to focus on performing the work and
duties that had been given.
Table 2: Team Development Stages
Solf 2012 week slide
In a team, leader is playing important role to ensure all the things and processes are
going smoothly. Ting Yoon Chuan is the team leader which is appointed from the
start of the assignment. He is appointed by other group member by identify the
personal ability and background which he has experience to be a leader and he have
the leadership ability that is very important for a leader.

Leader is emerged to guide the team and make a conclusion for every single
discussion and this work out in the team which eventually lesser the argument among
the team. As a leader, Ting Yoon Chuan is the one who give other team member task
and called for meeting to finalize everything.

2.2 Brainstorming

LFSC004 Innovation and Change Page 6 of 34
Our group members decided to use brainstorming technique to generate innovative
ideas. In order to conduct our brainstorming session, we set the teams objective
which is to produce an innovative product that can change the life of the people to
become better. Our group had conducted three sessions of the brainstorming.

First Session: The brainstorming was conducted at Swinburnes Cafeteria and we
briefly discussed the types of ideas we want to generate. The
duration of our meeting is about an hour as we started from 1pm to
2pm.

Second Session: The brainstorming was conducted at Food Bazaar in The Spring. The
reason we choose The Spring is to gain more inspiration to generate
more valuable ideas. The duration of our meeting is about 2 hours as
we started from 12pm to 2pm.

Third Session: The brainstorming was conducted at Swinburnes library. The reason
we choose the library is because it is quiet and easy to focus and
elaborate our ideas. The duration of our meeting is about an hour as
we started from 9am to 10am.

During the brainstorming, the ideas are flowing freely base on our objective as the
team members have their creative minds and thoughts. 1
st
2 sessions we have
generated some ideas that already exist before, we have decided to cancel those
existing ideas. Besides that, we also incur some disagreement of the ideas but we
compromise with each other and consult the opinion of each member. In our group,
there are no judgment and criticism of ideas during this brainstorming session because
we all know that all ideas have equal status at this stage. In this session, another
consideration is the quantity of the ideas is good and not the quality. After the
brainstorming sessions, we successfully recorded 17 ideas and we number and display
these ideas on another sheet of paper. Therefore, our brainstorming was a success as
we all follow the rules.

The final ideas generated as stated below:

potential idea, the idea will undergo idea development which will eventually become
the outcome of this process.

3.1 Idea Selection

To fulfil the predetermined criteria, a few techniques are conducted to select the final
idea. The techniques used to select the final idea are item by item technique with the
help of NAF criteria (Novel, Attractive, Feasible), Spend $100 technique and Edward
de Bonos Six Thinking Hats technique. These techniques are conducted step by step
and the criteria and detail of these techniques are described.

3.1.1 Item by Item Technique

This technique is used to shortlist the ideas generate in idea generation. In this
technique, the NAF criteria are used by list down all the ideas and categorize them
according to their novelty, attractiveness and feasibility. This technique is conducted
by placing a tick for every criterion met and the shortlist those ideas with most
number of ticks.

3.1.2 Spend $100 Technique

After shortlisting our ideas, we use this technique to rank our ideas which every
member can use their imaginary $100 on their favourite idea or share it among several
LFSC004 Innovation and Change Page 10 of 34
ideas. We choose this method as the ideas that we shortlisted are not more than about
ten and this is the most suitable technique to choose the team favourite ideas as we
only have three members. The ideas will be rank from most money spent to the least.

Ideas TGL ($) WWHC ($) TYC ($) Total ($)
Helium Bag 40 50 30 120

3.1.3 Six Thinking Hats (STH) Technique

To further develop our selected three ideas and decided the final idea, we decided to
use Six Thinking Hats as we think that this is the best technique to analyse and
LFSC004 Innovation and Change Page 11 of 34
evaluate an idea from different angles. Six Thinking Hats is a thinking tool which
developed by Edward de Bono. In this section, we apply parallel thinking which we
separate our thinking and use information, emotion, judgment, positive thinking,
creativity and lastly make conclusion in an uncluttered manner.

With the help of Six Thinking Hats technique, we found out the positive and negative
side of all three ideas and which ideas have more market value in the society
nowadays. On examining the differnet hats comments, the team finally made the final
decision, the Helium Bag. From Helium Bag, we found out that this product can solve
one of the global issues which are overloaded school bag and the present of this
product can change the life of youngest, which in turn applied our objective which is
to produce an innovative product that can change the life of people to become better.

3.2 Idea Development

After selecting our final decision, Helium Bag, the team started to gather more
information to produce it. In this stage, Helium Bag has been sketch out and the
average price of Helium Bag is also finalized.
LFSC004 Innovation and Change Page 15 of 34

3.2.1 Gathering Information and Identifying Resources

To produce our product, the team had done some research to make sure our product is
practicable and logical. First, according to School bags causing back pain (2012),
school children need to carry a lot of books to school which will eventually lead to
hunch back in a prolonged period. Therefore, the team comes out with Helium Bag to
solve this global issue. Research has been done to prove that helium gas can help to
lift thing up and the price of helium gas is affordable. Paul (1999) proved that to lift
up 1kg of load, approximate 163 grams of helium gas is needed. Besides that, Helium
(2005) mentioned that the price of a Grade-A helium gas is cost about 2.34 USD per
cubic meter. After done some calculation, we found that to lift up 4 kg of load we
need 652 grams of helium. As respect to the Standard Temperature and Pressure
(STP) which is 22.4 litres per mole, 652 grams of helium gas is equal to 3651.2 litre
of the gas. One cubic meter is equal to 1000 litre, which means the total volume of
helium gas is 3.6512 cubic meters which cost 8.54 USD. With the support of the latest
exchange rates which 1 USD is equal to RM3.17, the final price of helium gas to lift
up 4kg of load is RM27.

Apart from that, the team wishes to solve the inconvenience charging methods that we
are facing nowadays. As Fuse solar charger (n.d.) shown, solar bags had already
existed before and it is practicable which it can connect with a universal electronic
charger to solve the inconvenience charging problem. Lastly, the team is trying to
reduce the risk of walking at night. From another research Reflective bag cover (n.d.)
prove that reflective bag is the best way to reduce the risk as other people can easily
saw them at night.

In order to obtain further understanding about our newly design product, the team
were decided to use Six Serving Men as this method can help us think more widely
and logically. All the answers are compromise among all team members and it is
conducted in a logical sequence as shown below:

3.2.2.2 Product Features

Helium Bag is a newly design product that produce by the team. This product is fully
support the team objective which is to produce an innovative product that can change
the life of people to become better. The main features of Helium Bag include solar
panel, reflective pad and helium gas.

First, the solar panel is attached on the surface of our bag to absorb sunlight easily and
rapidly. The solar panel is used to produce electricity for universal electronic charger
which is attached in the inner front part of the bag. The universal electronic charger
can charge some electronic devices such as laptop and hand phone anywhere we want,
as long as there have helium bag.

Besides that, our helium bag also attaches two roles of reflective pad which attach
under the solar panel. The reflective pad is very useful as normal bag cannot reflect
light and this will lead to a very risky situation when people walking at night.
Attachment of this feature can let customer as a parents can be at ease let their
children go out at night.
Lastly, we insert the main content of our product, helium gas, at the bottom part of the
Helium Bag. Helium gas is injected in the aluminium container which is located in a
LFSC004 Innovation and Change Page 19 of 34
PVC (Polyvinylchloride) container. The reason we use two containers is because
helium gas can store in both aluminium and PVC container and two containers can
prevent the gas from leaking out easily.

With all these features, the helium bag can be more attractive and become a useful
innovative product.

3.2.3 Materials Used and Cost

Helium bag was introduced to the public though a 15 minute presentation to all the
targeted customers.

During the presentation, they are two methods for the team to collect the customers
feedback. First method is during the question and answer section, all the targeted
customers are free to ask any questions that relevant to our Helium Bag, and then the
teams members will try to answer all the questions that had been carry out. Besides
that, the team also listen to the comment given during the question and answer
section. The second method is distributing the feedback forms to the targeted
customer for them to fill in their honest opinion on Helium Bag after the presentation.

After receive some feedback from all targeted customers, the team were conducted
several meeting to discuss their feedback. From the feedback form, the team obtained
some suggestion, positive and negative feedback. For the negative feedback and

customer, the team start to conduct several meeting and discuss with each other.
Through consulting with each other, some important decisions are made and show on
the table below.

Suggested Improvements

Discussion with Team Members Decision
Prolong the lifespan of
helium gas.

According to Yang Jong in an
interview conducted on 8 Jun
2012, current Polyvinylchloride
(PVC) container and aluminium
container only can last the helium
gas about one year. However, if
the quality of the PVC and
aluminium container enhances in
the future, the lasting of helium
gas can be increased more than
one year.
A very good idea
but this suggestion
are deferred to the
future and needs
more research.
Increase the size of solar
panel.
Valuable suggestions which can
help the helium bag to generate
more electricity.

This suggestion is
accepted by enlarge
the size of the solar
panel on the helium

LFSC004 Innovation and Change Page 23 of 34
more electricity to
change the laptop
Put reflective pad on the
sling of the helium bag.
Valuable suggestion which can let
the driver in the front to easily
detect the present of the people
who use helium bag.
This suggestion is
accepted by attach
two more reflective
pads on the sling of
the bag.
Provides battery for the
solar panel.
Valuable suggestion which can
store electrical energy that had
been generated through the
sunlight and uses it at night.
This suggestion is
accepted by provide
an extra battery
inside the helium
bag. This can help
to overcome the
inconvenient
charging problem at
night.

Remove the solar panel
and universal electronic
charger from helium bag.

Valuable suggestion which can be
considered to favour the children
group. The bag that consists solar
pad and universal electronic
charger maybe not suitable for the
children. This is because at the
child age, they may not use any
electronic devices such as laptop
and mobile phone.
This suggestion is
accepted by
produce another
type of the helium
bag which only
contains helium gas
for children
excluding the other
features

4.2 Modification on Innovation

Before conduct the modification, the team decided to use the De Bono s PMI
technique to analyse and evaluate the suggestions that obtained from the customers.
Table below shows the result of the teams evaluation on the suggestions given.

Table 15: PMI Technique

Through the meeting, the team was decided to increase the size of the solar panel on
the front of the Helium Bag. When the surface of solar panel increase, they are more
heat and light energy will be converted into electrical energy, so they are more
electricity generated. Besides that, the team also decided to attach extra two reflective
pads on the sling of the Helium Bag as it can reduce the rate of road accident by
attract the attention of the driver at the front or the back at night. Apart from that, the
LFSC004 Innovation and Change Page 26 of 34
team also decided to add on battery inside the bag. This is because the team wants to
ensure the Helium Bag still can provide charging at night by using the electricity that
store inside the battery. Lastly, the team also decided to produce other Helium Bag
without any solar panel and universal electronic charger for the children group. This is
because Helium Bag with solar panel and universal electronic charger is unnecessary
for children as they are still young and they also do not use any electronic devices.
Therefore, new design of helium bag had been carry out by add on the battery inside
the bag, attach extra reflective pad at the sling of the bag and enlarge the size of the
solar panel on the front of the bag. Another new type of helium bag without any solar
panel and universal electronic charger will be produced to favour the children group.

The picture below shows the new design of the prototype.

4.2.1 Triple Bottom Line Concept

After the modified the Helium Bag, the team apply the Triple Bottom Line to double
check the decision made and ensure it is right. The table below show how the Triple
Bottom Line be used.

Economically Viable

Helium bag is profitable in the market
because it can sell to different target
customers such as children, teenager,
traveller, motorcyclist and mountain climber.
Socially Responsible

Helium Bag brings a lot of benefits to the
society. For instances, Helium Bag is a light
bag which is helpful to the children by
prevents their back pain and bad posture

Environmentally Sound

Helium bag helps to reduce the amount of
resources used and save electrical energy.
This is because it combines the functions of
the reflective bag, laptop bag and also solar
powered bag.

4.3 Commercialization

After the suggestions was evaluated through De Bono s PMI technique and Triple
Bottom Line concept, the team is proceed into next stage which is commercialization
stage by using the Gantt Chart.

Before proceed into commercialization stage, the team has gone through the
development and implementation stage which the team started to improve the Helium
Bag based on the suggestion of the feedback collected. Therefore, the team starts to
design the new features of the Helium Bag and perform it into prototype.

Lastly, the team was successfully to produce the final version of the Helium Bag
which can be commercializing into the market.
