Foetal ECG Extraction Using Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System
(ANFIS)
Abstract
Keeping the health condition of fetus in best conditions is one of the most important goals which be
followed in pregnancy period. If physicians can be aware of the fetuss health condition
continuously, they can improve the level of their attentions and so they can take better decisions
quickly in emergency situations. Hear signal monitoring is one of the most important techniques
which give physicians important information about fetal health condition. The fetal
electrocardiogram (FECG) signal reflects the electrical activity of the fetal heart.
Fetal electrocardiogram (FECG) is obtained in two ways: invasive method and non invasive method.
Invasive method records the FECG signal using the electrodes which have been placed on the fetuss
head (the electrode should pass through the mothers womb). This method sometimes may be
caused problems for the mother (to tear the womb, wombs interior infection or bloodshed) and for
the fetus (pressure and infection). Regarding to the mentioned problems, non invasive method is
mostly used for FECG recording nowadays. Using this method, FECG signal is extracted from a signal
which has been recorded on the mothers abdomen. If one is able to eliminate the maternal ECG
component in the composite signal (AECG), a reasonable estimation of the FECG signal can be
obtained.
The project proposes a new method for extracting the Foetal Electrocardiogram (FECG) signal from
the two ECG signals recorded at the thoracic and abdominal areas of the mothers skin. The thoracic
ECG is assumed to be completely maternal ECG (MECG) while the abdominal ECG is assumed to be a
combination of mothers and foetuss ECG signals and random noise. The maternal component of
the in the abdominal ECG is a nonlinearly transformed version of the MECG. The method uses
Adaptive Nero-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) structure for identifying the nonlinear
transformation. Using this transformation, we can cancel the maternal component in AECG and then
we can estimate the FECG.Once the foetal ECG is extracted from the composite signal lots of
information can be obtained like that of the conventional ECG. Thus a near perfect method is
proposed to obtain foetal ECG and it facilitates a noninvasive method.
Existing System
1. Adaptive filtering technique
2. Wavelet Transform based technique
3. Large amount of hardware is needed for recording ECG

Proposed System
1. Uses Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS)
2. Requires less hardware and more accurate.
3. Less inconvenience to the patients during ECG measurement.
