COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course aims primarily to introduce students to great literatures. The purpose of the course
is to expose students to be familiar with great literatures by focusing on selected texts.
Students are required to deeply read the chosen texts, analyze and investigate strategies
that writers use in their fictional works to create unique contexts, ideas and contents. They
must relate their close reading of the literary texts to the aesthetics of the writers and develop
critical thinking. Using a student-centered learning approach, the course will focus on the
students responses to one literary text they read.

COURSE OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
1. Define great literature, its types, forms, aesthetics, structure sand styles (C1)
2. Develop an appreciation of great literature as works of art (A3)
3. Evaluate the content of great literature by identifying and engaging in one literary
finding. (P1)

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF & ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Students are to submit all assignments in order to pass the course.

ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST ADHERE TO THE SPECFICATIONS BELOW:
1. Cover sheet (Logo of UiTM, Name of faculty, Course code/name, Title of assignment,
Student name and ID, prepared for PN. AYU HASWIDA ABU BAKAR, (Date of
submission)
2. Times New Roman: Size 12
3. 1.5 spacing
4. Page number
5. 1,200 words .

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 20%
Students are to select a topic given based a particular studied; students are to illustrate and
explain the topic chosen

GROUP ASSIGNMENT AND PRESENTATION 30%
A group of students are given a topic based on a particular studied text for the assignment
and based on the assignment: students are to discuss and describe the topic given, and
present the content.

SHORT ESSAYS / QUIZZES 10%
Sporadically, students will be given quizzes based upon lecture notes given. However, quiz
dates will not be announced in advance nor will make-ups be permitted. This being the
case, attendance at all classes IS required. Failure to do so may result in marks deduction.


FINAL ASSESSMENT 40%
Final assessment will be held at the end of the semester. The assessment will cover all topics
learned on the course. Students will be assessed by means of three different kinds of
question: Section A (Objective question), Section B (Multiple Choice of short essay) and
Section C (Long Essay)

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

Attendance

1. Class

ABSENTEEISM Please refer to UiTM Academic Regulations [2003] that state: Students who do
not attend classes up to 80% of contact hours WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to sit for Final Exams, or
their Final Coursework will not be assessed. Students who are absent from classes (both
lectures and screenings) without sensible reason, will have 1 mark deducted a day from
each from his/her overall marks.

2. Wacana Seni

Students who fails to attend Wacana Seni without sensible reason, 1 mark will be deducted
for each absenteeism from his/her overall marks.


Plagiarism
Plagiarism means copying or imitating language and ideas of another author and presenting
them as your own work. In the writing of essays the most common form of plagiarism is
copying passages from books, articles or internet sources without proper acknowledgement
of the source. The source must be cited both in cases of a direct quotation and in cases
where students have re-written or paraphrased the original. The aim of an essay is to present
your own argument in your own words. It is usual and indeed commendable to refer to the
work and ideas of others as well, but for the most part the analysis, argument, and language
must be your own.

Plagiarism is totally unacceptable because it is a form of intellectual dishonesty, because the
person concerned is not learning to do things for him/herself, and because it is extremely
unfair to students who do their own work.

Plagiarism is a serious academic offence that will result in appropriate penalties, to be
determined at the discretion of the course lecturer in consultation with the facultys divisional
chair. Plagiarism includes submitting the same work to more than one lecturer for credit in
different courses without prior written permission from the lecturers. Penalties will range from
failure of an assignment to possible failure of the course. It is recommended that students
consult the Policy on Plagiarism published by the Academic Affairs Division.

Deadlines
Students must treat their deadlines seriously. All coursework should be submitted on time.
Assignments submitted after the deadline of DATE will be awarded zero. If you think you
might have problems completing or submitting an assignment please contact the lecturer (in
advance) to discuss the situation.
