Bombers Control Running Game, Defeat Hilltop
By T.J. Hug
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
(October 10th, 2014)-WEST UNITY: For the frst time
this season the Edon defense held a team below 100 yards
rushing.
Of course, the 43 team yards gained on the ground for
the Cadets is a bit tainted by 5 sacks the Bombers made
on sophomore quarterback Quinn Smith, subtracting 36
yards from Hilltop's total. Even still, their inability to run
the ball consistently played a role in the home town Ca-
dets 42-14 loss on Friday.
Not only would a stronger running have solidifed their
offense, but it also would have allowed for the Hilltop
boys to keep the ball away from the potent Bomber of-
fense more effectively. As it so happens, the Cadets won
the time of possession battle by just over seven minutes,
27:49 to 20:11. Yet, this had less to do with the Hilltop
defense and more to do with Edon moving the ball down
the feld quickly, thanks in large part to their 197 rushing
yards.
Not to mention a 71 punt return for a touchdown by
Edon senior Kaden Sapp in the third quarter eliminated
an entire drive from the Bombers time of possession.
Sapp, playing quarterback for the Bombers, had a
good outing on Hilltop's feld, netting 146 yards and 3
touchdowns while going 9 for 18 passing. Though he did
throw 2 interceptions as well. He also rushed the ball 12
times, managing 111 yards and another touchdown.
For his part, Smith had a strong game as well. Com-
pleting 8 of his 18 passes for 180 yards and 2 touch-
downs. Nor did he turn the ball over. Those aforemen-
tioned sacks gave the agile sophomore -23 yards rushing,
though.
Aside from Sapp, the leading rusher for the game was
his teammate, Cameron Castillo. The senior running back
claimed 46 yards on 9 carries, though most of them came
on a breakaway 36 yard run for a score. On the other side,
Chase Masters led the Cadet ground attack with 43 yards
in 13 attempts.
Freshman Tyler Suboski shined in the Cadet passing
game, hauling in 3 balls for 83 yards in a touchdown.
The scoring reception was an electric 58 yard pass from a
rolling Smith in the closing minutes of the game. For the
Bombers, Preston Klingler made 5 receptions for 52 yards
and 2 touchdowns, including a game changing score to
end the half.
With just over two minutes to go in the frst half, Quinn
Smith connected with Mikel Burlew for a 34 yard touch-
down, putting Hilltop on the board 22-7 with momentum
on their side and the ball coming their way to start the
third quarter. Yet the Bombers hastily marched down the
feld, ending their drive with a 7 yard touchdown pass
from Sapp to Klingler on the last play of the half. After a
two point conversion, Edon went into halftime enjoying a
30-7 lead, and Hilltop struggled for the remainder of the
game.
Defensively, as previously mentioned, Edon was able
to force some pressure on Smith. Trey Walz had 2 sacks
on the evening, while Tyler Seaman, Heath Brown, and
Jevi Brandt added a sack apiece as well.
Jalen Towers made 2 sacks of his own for the Cadets.
Joe Shilling, Ryan Brooker, Mikel Burlew, and Quinn
Smith each contributed a tackle for loss to the Hilltop de-
fensive effort.
With a strong defensive performance, as well as con-
trolling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball,
the Bombers were able to secure a much needed victory
on the road. The young Cadets will have to bounce back
quick, as they will make the trek to Gibsonburg this week.
Edon will host Northwood.

DEGREES OF SEPARATION ... Edon Senior quarterback Kaden Sapp outruns one Ca-
det defender and stiff arms the other as he turns up feld for a portion of his 111 rushing
yards on the evening.
BREAKING AWAY ... Sapp (10) runs past a host of Hilltop tacklers as he sprints his way
into the endzone. Quinn Smith (13) is among those chasing him.
STARE DOWN ... As he uses his hands to avoid the tackle of an Edon defender, Cadet
Zack Van Dyke, a Junior, makes eye contact with the would be tackler before advanc-
ing the ball for positive yardage.
YOU CANT HAVE IT ... Hilltops Mikel Burlew (9) clings the ball tightly as Bomber
defensive back Preston Klingler also gets his hands on the ball. Burlew didnt relent,
though, as he held the ball until well after he hit the ground, ensuring the completion
went to the Cadets.

THE VILLAGE REPORTER
(October 10th, 2014)-MONTPELIER: On
his second pass attempt of the game, re-
ceiver turned fll-in quarterback Cody Cau-
dill threw an interception, ending the Lo-
comotives frst possession. Montpelier fans
feared the worst, as they had been down
this road before, and they expected another
anemic offensive performance from their
Locos.
Then, as Montpelier began its second
turn with the ball, Dylan Snyder ran on the
feld.
Having missed several weeks due to in-
jury, the Locos star quarterback made his
return against Swanton on Friday night.
And what a return he had, contributing
387 all-purpose yards against a solid Bull-
dog defense.
Those Swanton defenders struggled to
contain Snyder, as he routinely avoided
their pass rush and turned negative plays
into positive ones. In fact, his 15 rushes
amounted to 200 yards and 2 touchdowns
in the game. He also had a good day pass-
ing the ball, completing 15 of 28 tosses for
187 yards. He also threw an interception,
however.
Snyder's herculean effort, as well as
strong performances from fellow Locos Dal-
las Royer and Caudill among others, were
for naught, though. While Montpelier kept
pace for the frst half, Swanton pulled away
in the second, winning the game 64-31.
Most of the statistics don't refect that
score, actually. Montpelier out gained the
Bulldogs 544 yards to 427. Passing wise
only fve yards separated the two teams as
Swanton's 192 yards just tops the Locos
187. Rushing yards are where the home
town Locomotives carried a strong advan-
tage, 357 to 235.
Aside from Snyder's 200 yards rush-
ing, Royer accounted for a majority of the
teams ground attack, gaining 127 yards on
12 carries. Caudill rushed for 22 yards on
8 attempts.
Caudill also was a vital portion of the
Montpelier aerial assault, bringing down 9
receptions for 76 yards. With 77 yards on
just 2 catches, Jared Lyons also made sig-
nifcant contributions to the Loco offense.
With such a powerful offensive display,
one has to wonder how Montpelier was
beaten so handily.
Special teams were not kind to the Loco-
motives, kickoff coverage in particular.
Montpelier allowed 187 yards and a
touchdown on four kicks of the ball to
Swanton. By comparison, the Bulldogs
kicked off to the Locomotives six times, yet
only gave up 46 yards and no scores. Start-
ing on a short feld is a great way to score
points in a hurry, and with lesser offensive
production than one's opponent.
Swanton also found the edges of the
Montpelier defense vulnerable as well.
Running into the teeth of the Locomotive
defense was like colliding head on with a
freight train for the Bulldog runners, so
they simply shifted their rushing attack to
the outside, with much better results.
Montpelier may have lost this game,
but they regained their quarterback in the
process. That should help quite a bit when
they travel to Archbold to take on the Blue
Streaks this week.

THE VILLAGE REPORTER
DELTA - October 10, 2014 "The NWOAL game of the
year", "Fulton County's ONLY game of the night", what-
ever a fan wanted to call it, certainly lived up to its billing.
In the end, the battle of the league's two unbeaten
teams fnished with Wauseon defeating Delta 24-7.
With both teams fred up, the Panthers took the open-
ing possession after Wauseon deferred to the second half.
Delta needed just over three minutes to put up six points.
On the seventh play of their 77-yard drive, quarter-
back Noah Parson's 43 yard strike to Bailey Storeholder
at the 8:56 mark got the Panthers off to a fast start as the
potent offense seemed to be off to the races.
The Indians needed to strike back and strike back is
what they did.
Taking the ball at their own 35, Zac Robinson came
out throwing, his frst attempt of the night was a comple-
tion to Noah Castle. The play covered nine yards and put
the ball at the Wauseon 44. The second pass fell incom-
plete. The Indians gained two frst downs on the drive.
The big play of the march was a 20-yard run by Robinson.
The ball laid to rest on the Panther 35. After a three-yard
run by Mason Creager, Robinson found his 6'6" tight end
in the end zone. Castle climaxed a 65-yard drive on nine
plays. Josh Whitcomb was good on the extra point and
the game was deadlocked at 7-7 with 5:25 left in the open-
ing quarter.
Enter Wauseon, the top defense in the league allowing
just 55 points through seven games. Delta, who has the top
rusher in the league (Storeholder), the fourth top rusher
in the league (Dylan Nostrant) and seventh best rusher in
the league (Jesse Beverly), were held to 131 yards on the
ground. Because of this defensive dominance, Delta was
forced into a passing game, which with one touchdown
throw, was stymied the rest of the game. It was obvious
that Delta was not a strong passing team. Through six
games Parsons had only thrown the ball 25 times. It was
the front line play of Anthony Werder, Noah Castle, Jacob
Rabbe along with Nate Suntken and Peyten Shadbolt that
forced the Panthers out of their rushing game.
After a three-and-out for Delta, the Indians put to-
gether a six and a half minute drive. Wauseon started to
move down the feld as they took advantage of Castle's
mismatch with Robinson fnding him for three catches for
26 yards. However some defensive stops by Ryan Patchin,
Storeholder and Mark Francis made it a fourth and 11
from the Panthers 11. Coach Cooper called on Whitcomb
to try a 28 yard feld goal. The sophomore split the up-
rights and with 1:37 left in the half the Indians were up
10-7.
"Our goal as a team is to always score on our frst pos-
sessions of each half," coach Cooper said. Wauseon made
good on that goal to start the second half. Robinson ran
for 25 yards, Suntken ran for 14 yards. After two short
gains, Robinson found Jacob Newlove in the end zone
with a 20-yard pass. Whitcomb added another point to
his four, and the Indians were up 10 at 17-7 to open the
third quarter.
The Panther's offense seemed to be defeated with the
Indians quick score.
Delta, turning to their passing game, were intercepted
by Mason Creager on their frst drive. The Delta running
game had gained 24 yards before Creager brought the
drive to a halt.
Wauseon had one offensive drive and Delta had two of-
fensive drives that stalled to end the third quarter.
After Wauseon went three-and-out, Delta put together
an eight-play drive. With a third and 17 at the Wauseon
18 yard line, the Indians' Danny Hench step in front of a
Parsons' pass and galloped 82 yards to seal the win for
the Tribe.
Statistically for the Indians (5-0, 7-0) Robinson con-
nected on 10 of 17 passes covering 121 yards and two
touchdowns. His leading target was Castle who hauled in
fve catches for 63 yards and a touchdown. Nate Suntken
carried the ball nine times for 58 yards.
The Indians return to Harmon Field Friday night to try
to try to avenge their only regular season loss from a year
ago when the Bryan Golden Bears (4-1, 5-2) come to town.

Battle Oak Har bor To Tie
(October 6th, 2014)-WAUSEON: With
the Rockets of Oak Harbor coming to town,
the Wauseon Lady Indians knew their
home feld would be the launching point
for a battle of epic proportions.
Thus was the case, as the 13 saves by
Wauseon Keeper Hannah Spadafore was
just enough to force a 3-3 tie with the vis-
iting Oak Harbor girls. Of course, with only
5 attempts at the Rocket goal, the Lady In-
dians made sixty percent of their shots on
the game.
Freshman sensation Jaydelin Vasvery
scored twice for Wauseon, playing a pivotal
role in the team keeping pace with the ris-
ing Rockets. Avery Giguere put the ball be-
tween the goal posts a single time herself,
with the Lady Indian also making an as-
sist. Natalie Koenig and Lydia Schmucker
also added an assist apiece in the tie.
Pettisville Battles Continental To Tie
(October 7th, 2014)-PETTISVILLE: The
Blackbirds survived a tough match at
home to Continental, despite being unable
to secure the victory. The two teams bat-
tled to a 1-1 tie in the match.
Jordan Bontrager provided the lone
goal for Pettisville. Overall, the Blackbirds
took 14 shots at the Continental goal. On
the other side of the feld, the hometown
Blackbirds gave a riveting defensive effort,
allowing Continental just 3 attempts at
their own goal.
Wauseon Gir ls Tie Delta
(October 7th, 2014)-DELTA: The Lady
Indians of Wauseon went to Delta's feld
and fought the Panthers to a 1-1 tie.
Freshman Jaydelin Vasvery put
Wauseon's one goal between the posts,
thanks to an assist by Maddie Richer. On
the match, the Indians made 6 attempts at
the Lady Panther net.
Wauseon Keeper Hannah Spadafore re-
corded 9 saves on the evening.

Edon Defeats Montpelier
Locomotives In Four Sets
(October 6th, 2014)-EDON: With the
Locomotives making a stop in town, the
Bombers of Edon were well prepared for
the out of conference NWOAL opponent.
Montpelier got off to a fast start, earn-
ing a decisive 25-16 victory over the home-
town Bombers. Edon would rally, however,
taking game 2 25-20. Game 3 saw the two
teams wrestle for control of the match, with
the Lady Bombers just pulling offf a 25-
23 win. The Lady Locos, with their backs
against the wall, fought hard in game 4,
but fell behind late in the set. Edon took
the game and the match 25-18.

Stryker Drops Match To Evergreen
(October 6th, 2014)-STRYKER: It can
be tough taking on a non-conference oppo-
nent in the midst of a conference schedule,
particularly so late into the season. This is
the challenge undertaken by the Lady Pan-
thers of Stryker as they hosted Evergreen.
The North West Ohio Athletic League foe
proved to be too much for them, however.
A slow start put Stryker behind early in
the match, as they lost the frst set 6-25.
Game 2 also belonged to the Lady Vikings,
who claimed the set 25-12. In a late come-
back effort, the Stryker girls put together
their best set of the match, but still lost
the game 19-25, giving the Lady Vikings
the match.
Allie Frisbie was the catalyst of the
Panther offensive, handing out 10 assists
while also making an ace. Audra Rupp had
3 kills, a block, and an ace for Stryker.
Teammate Sierra Walters put up 2 kills
and an ace in the loss as well.
Wauseon Indians Defeat
Paulding In Five Games
(October 6th, 2014)-PAULDING: It took
fve games, but the Wauseon girls were
able to obtain a win on the road against
Paulding.
After losing game 1 22-25, the Lady In-
dians followed up the loss with a convinv-
ing 25-13 win in game 2. A tight game 3
fell Wauseon's way as well, as they took
the set 25-23. Paulding refused to give up,
however, earning a tough game 4 win 25-
21. A close game 5 came down to the wire,
with the Indians scoring a narrow 15-13
victory to take down the match.
Sydney Bosell gave Wauseon a boos
with her 15 kills and 4 blocks. Morgan
Bzovi made an impressive 24 digs on the
match as well. Lady Indian Hayley Cham-
berlain had a balanced evening, recording
13 assists, 5 digs, 3 kills, and 3 blocks.
Nor th Centr al Eagles Drop
Road Match To Hilltop
(October 7th, 2014)-WEST UNITY: With
8 aces on the evening, Felicity Jackson
paved the way for the Lady Cadets to a suc-
cessful defense of their home court against
the invading Eagles of North Central.
Jackson also recorded 7 assists, 2 digs,
and a kill in the match. Ariana Brown add-
ed 10 kills and 4 blocks in the Hilltop vic-
tory. Allie Schmitt offered up 8 digs, 3 kills,
and an ace to the Cadet effort as well.
For North Central, Makayla Hayes and
Alyssa Swank each made 3 kills. Keeley
Shaw had an ace for the Eagles as well.
Reese Cogswell also made 12 great passes
in the loss.
A dogfght ensued in game 1 of the
match, with Hilltop earning a tough 25-
21 win. Game 2 belonged to the Cadets as
well, as they claimed the set 25-16. The
Lady Eagles couldn't fnd their rhythm in
game 3 either, losing the set and the match
15-25.
Montpelier Drops Match To
League Opponent Ever green
(October 7th, 2014)-MONTPELIER: A
balanced performance by Hannah Blake,
who recorded 13 kills, 9 digs, and 7 as-

Edon Handed Second BBC Loss,
Both At The Hands Of Pettisville
(October 7th, 2014)-PETTISVILLE: The
10 digs and 7 kills of Nicole Newell weren't
enough to give the Lady Bombers a road
victory at Pettisville.
In fact, it seems as though nothing
can propel the Edon girls past the Lady
Blackbirds this season. The Bombers cur-
rently display a proud 7-2 record against
Buckeye Border Conference competition.
Yet both of those losses came to the same
team; Pettisville.
Game 1 went to the Blackbirds, as
they took the set 25-15. Edon struggled
mightily in the second set, with literally
every bounce seeming to work against the
Bombers. They dropped game 2 10-25. The
girls from Edon attempted to rebound in
the third game, but just couldn't counter
the Pettisville attack. The Lady Blackbirds
claimed game 3 and the match 25-14.
Dana Fricke had a monster game for the
Blackbirds, amassing 18 kills, 5 blocks, 3
digs, and 3 aces. Teammate Jordyn Pur-
sel made an impressive 20 digs to go along
with her 14 kills, while Kate Kauffman
added 30 assists, 7 digs, 4 kills, and 2 aces
to the Pettisville victory.
In the loss, Alex Kiess made 4 assists, 3
kills, and 2 digs for Edon. Teammate Kaela
Gearhart also set up 4 assists on the eve-
ning, making 2 digs as well. Fellow Bomber
Kaitlin Chrisman added 4 digs and 2 kills
on the evening.
The loss drops Edon to 14-6 on the sea-
son, and the aforementioned 7-2 BBC re-
cord. For Pettisville, the win improves their
record to 15-5 on the season, maintaining
a perfect 9-0 mark in BBC play.

Fayette Mounts Comeback To
Beat Stryker On Senior Night
(October 7th, 2014)-FAYETTE: After
falling behind early in the match, the Lady
Eagles of Fayette were able to rally, defeat-
ing the visiting Panthers of Stryker. The
win will preserve a positive memory in the
minds of Fayette seniors as they celebrated
their senior night.
The Lady Eagles found themselves
on the wrong end of a tight 25-23 score
in game 1. Yet they turned their fortunes
around, winning the next three sets to
claim the match. Fayette began their
comeback in game 2, taking the set 25-14.
Game 3 saw Stryker unable to slow down
the Lady Eagle attack, losing the set 16-
25. The fourth set was the stage for which
the Eagles completed their dramatic and
emotional surge, winning the set and the
match 25-18.
Maddie Uribes led the way for Stryker
with 10 assists, 7 kills, and 2 blocks. Au-
dra Rupp added 9 kills and 7 blocks for the
Panthers. Teammates Brittany Breier and
Brooke Whitlock contributed 5 kills a piece
in the defeat as well.
Jessie Wheeler and Michaela Bates were
at the forefront of the Lady Eagle assault,
making 10 kills a piece. Hannah Machacek
set things up for the Fayette offense with
36 assists and 9 digs. McKenzie Schaffner
added 23 digs in the victory as well.

NOT ON MY WATCH ... Lady Panther Brittany Breier refuses to let the ball touch the
court, sliding on her knees to hit it back into play.
TRACKING THE BALL ... Hustling across the court, Stryker Junior Sierra Walters (23)
pursues the ball relentlessly, even traveling off court to make a knock it back to her
teammates. The hustle play paid off, as her fellow Lady Panthers were able to keep the
ball alive thanks to her save.

Edon defender Hannah Kaylor (14).

ies the ball as she prepares to make her own ascent.

Pettisville Beats Hilltop In Three
Sets, Finishes BBC Undefeated
(October 9th, 2014)-PETTISVILLE:

kills, and 5 aces of Jordyn Pursel, the
Lady Blackbirds laid claim to their tenth
Buckeye Border Conference (BBC) victory
of the season when they took down Hilltop

Not only did Pettisville win every match
against BBC opponents this year, but
every set as well. Winning every game of

and doesn't happen very often in the sport.

digs, 1 assist, and 1 ace. Fellow Cadet Ari-
ana Brown recorded 6 blocks to go along
with her 4 kills. Baylee Schmitt and Fe-
licity Jackson each added 4 assists to the

THE HOMETOWN HUDDLE
Assorted Local Sports News

THE VILLAGE REPORTER
Most little boys dream of heading to the end zone, ball
in hand, being chased by the opposing team as the crowd
cheers them on. This reality happened for twelve year old
Kaleb Schaffner Saturday, October 11. What makes this
moment even more special though is Kaleb has Cerebral
Palsy. And the way he made it into the end zone is a true
act of selfess love.
Kaleb doesn't walk. He doesn't speak. But he LOVES
football and watching his older brother play for the Hill-
top team. He also enjoys watching his classmates on the
Cadet 5th and 6th grade youth team. His classmates love
him right back and had a special jersey made for Kaleb to
wear as he watches from the sidelines.
Saturday though, Kaleb was more than a spectator. He
was a teammate. In the 4th quarter, Hilltop was on offense
when the call came for Kaleb to take the feld. Wheeled on
by big brother Austin, the ball was snapped and handed
to Kaleb. From there it was pure adrenaline as Austin
pushed Kaleb about 60 yards toward the goal line. All
the players followed cheering his name. All the fans on
both sides of the feld stood and cheered. Kaleb was con-
centrating on the ball and Austin with a determined look
wheeled him the fnal yards as everyone clapped, cheered,
and many cried at the love shown by not just those from
Hilltop, but those from the Liberty Center sideline as well.
What happened next was even more amazing. Kaleb
was presented a helmet from the Liberty Center Coach.
Hand painted by Kyle Kern at K&K Collision of Liberty
Center, it was painted with the Liberty Center colors on
one side and Hilltop on the other. A Liberty Center player
donated it as a keepsake. Both teams gathered for a photo
and wished the star player well.
Kaleb has always been loved by his classmates who
include him in everything. He has always been loved by
his family and the Hilltop Community. And now, he is
loved by the Liberty Center Community, too as he brought
together young boys in an act of love, sportsmanship and
caring.
With a smile that could light up any room, Kaleb gave
his thanks. While it's a moment his family won't soon for-
get, it's also a moment - and a lesson - the young boys on
both sides of the feld will remember as well.

The Delta native ran in a feld of 503 for
the women's heat, taking tenth place over-
all in the event with a time of 23:00:31.

fn runner on the day, but the best of any
Tiffn runner ever at the event.
Captain of the Cross Country Team,
Kern is also a model student. She is dou-
ble majoring in forensic psychology and
human services, while minoring in law en-
forcement. Despite that massive workload,

lover Kaleb Schaffner score a touchdown in October 11ths game. Shown here
