ABSTRACT

This study attempted to answer the general question: How do various factors
affect the academic performance of Maronquillo National High School students?
Specifically, this study sought answer to the following questions: (1) What is the profile
of the students in terms of his/her age, sex, parents educational attainment and
relationship status, daily allowance, family income, number of siblings and distance from
house to school?; (2) How available the school related factors that affect the academic
performance of Maronquillo National High School students in National Achievement
Test?; (3) What is the academic performance of Maronquillo National High School
students in terms of National Achievement Test?; and (4) Is there any significant
relationship between students demographic profile and National Achievement Test?
Based on the problems, these hypotheses were formulated (1) There is significant
relationship between MNHS students demographic profile and National Achievement
Test. (2) There is significant difference between MNHS school related factors and
National Achievement Test.
The researcher applied the descriptive method of research. All faculty and
selected fourth year students of Maronquillo National High School served as respondent
of this study.
The required data in this study were gathered mainly through the use of locally
constructed questionnaires and also the result of the national achievement test of MNHS
students. In addition, interviews and ocular inspections to respondents were also
conducted for additional information. The mean, standard deviation, percentage and
correlation are the statistical treatment.
vi
The study was able to demonstrate the following findings: (1) With regards to
students demographic profile: most of them were 16 years old; there were more female
than male students; most fathers and mothers educational attainment is elementary
graduate; most of parents status is married; most of the students daily allowance is 41-
60 pesos; most of the family income is below 3,000 pesos; most of the students siblings
is two; and most of the distance from students home to school is 1-2 kilometres; (2) The
school related factors: facilities, equipment and assistance from local school board are
available; (3) The academic performance of Maronquillo National High School students
in terms of National Achievement Test Result in English, Mathematics, Science last
school year 2010-2011 is below the mastery of the subject; and (4) The students
academic performance in national achievement test has low correlation in their
demographic profile in students sex as correlated to the NAT result in English has a
result of low correlation which means female students are better in language skills than
male students. The school-related factors have low correlation to the students academic
performance as correlated in national achievement test with the following results; under
facilities: library and Science; and under equipments: television and Mathematics.
It is hoped that the findings and conclusions of the study will provide a clearer
understanding of MNHS students correlation of academic performance.
