Surface heating and cooling system
Cofloor:
practical and functional
With the surface heating/cooling system
Cofloor, Oventrop offers the specialist
trade not only products of first class qual-
ity but also all components required for the
economical installation of various laying
systems.
This includes base mats, a tacker sys-
tem (base mat rolls and folded boards), a
clamping rail system, a dry-build system,
edge isolating strips, stainless steel dis-
tributors/collectors, components for regula-
tion and hydronic balancing, cabinets,
pipes etc., all complying with standards,
coordinated and in accordance with the lat-
est technical developments.
Regarding the heating pipes, the user may
chose the PE-Xc pipe Copex, the compo-
sition pipe Copipe or the PE-RT pipe
Copert. All pipes can be laid fast and eas-
ily by only one person.
The composition pipe Copipe is also
suitable for supply pipes and for the con-
nection to heating or cooling generators
and distributors/collectors.
As is generally known, a surface heating
system only works perfectly if hydronic
balancing of the mass flow in the supply
pipes and heating circuits was carried out
correctly. A main factor for a trouble-free
operation of surface heating and cooling
systems is to ensure that the central flow
temperature control in front of the distribu-
tor/collector and also the automatic individ-
ual room temperature control of each
Summary
circuit at the distributor/collector is func-
tioning correctly. This can only be achieved
through hydronic balancing, i.e. the distri-
bution of mass flow according to the heat
demand of the whole system.
Oventrop offers a wide-ranging complete
programme of valves and controls, suitable
for any surface heating system.
Surface heating and cooling:
comfortable and economical
The times when energy was wasted care-
lessly are over. Nowadays the maxim is
Save energy. Not only because of the
continuously rising cost for oil and gas,
but also to avoid environmental pollution.
This is why the surface heating and to an
increasing extent the surface cooling are
becoming more and more important when
choosing the heating/cooling system for
new buildings as well as for renovation
projects. Comfort temperatures cannot
only be achieved economically during
heating periods but also during periods
of alternate heating and cooling. Energy
savings result from the fact that the heat in
a surface heating system spreads evenly
and that the flow temperature of the heat-
ing and cooling water does not differ that
much from the room temperature (during
heating periods approx. 35C instead of
70C and during cooling periods not below
16C).
Another advantage which, when combined
with a modern heating and cooling genera-
tor, e.g. a low temperature or gross calo-
rific boiler, heat pumps or cooled water
from a well, reflects in the energy con-
sumption. A further energy saving is made
as temperatures can be reduced from the
normal 22C to 20C without loosing the
comfort feeling.
Moreover, surface heating stirs up less
dust than radiator systems and dry floors
prevent the build-up of germs, mites and
fungus which can cause allergies.

Cofloor base mat system
for heating/cooling
1
1 The Oventrop base mat system Cofloor
with its coordinated components allows a
fast laying of the pipes by only one person.
The Oventrop base mats NP-35 and NP-11
are a suitable thermal and sound insulation
made of expanded polystyrene, thermal
conductivity group 040, covered with a
polystyrene foil, building material class B 2,
which is laid directly onto concrete screed
or, if required, onto the additional insulation.
The special grid pattern (50 mm between
the nodules) is suitable for 14 or 16 mm PE-
Xc pipes Copex, PE-RT pipes Copert
and composition pipes Copipe.
The handy base mats have practically no
wastage. They can be laid economically
and easily in any room whether it is small
with many angles or with a large surface
area.
Laying base mats in larger rooms starts in
a corner opposite the entrance door. The
outer rows of the base mats are connected
like a press button closure. At the end of
the room the base mats can be cut to size
as required. Any off cuts can be used in the
same order.
By using the polyethylene foil of the edge
isolating strip and the overlap of the base
mat, the floor surface is completely covered
and ready for the concrete or liquid screed
to be laid.
Therefore a sound bridge to the raw con-
crete flooring is avoided.
Several types of base mats are available
with varying thickness of insulation: NP-35,
NP-11 and the foil base mat NP-R (without
thermal insulation made of polystyrene).
2 The nodules of the polystyrene foil (NP-35
and NP-11) are filled with polystyrene foam.
This increases the firmness of the nodules
for the pipe fixing and secures the heating
or cooling pipes firmly.
Improved sound insulation of the base
mat with a thickness of 35-2 mm:
28 dB

3 4
6 7
1 The handy base mats NP-35 (illustr.) and
NP-11 are thermal and sound insulated.
If required, additional insulation has to be
considered, see notes on page 20.
2 The systematic laying begins by placing
the edge isolating strip along the walls.
The edge isolating strip has an additional
bonded foil, allowing a sufficient sealing of
the surface for use with concrete or liquid
screed.
3 The tight fitting of the base mats at the
edges is ensured through a continued
grooved edging. Like a press button clos-
ure, the overlap is pressed onto the first
row of nodules of the adjoining mat and
thus closes the area off completely (most
important when using liquid screed).
4 The strong structure of the nodules and
the clear grid pattern of 50 mm allow a
clean and simple fitting of the pipes by only
one person with the calculated distance of
the pipes being maintained.
5 The coil unwinder allows and easy and
clean laying of the pipes on the mats.
6 In doorways and passages, an expansion
strip separates individual floor areas from
each other. A slit corrugated pipe sleeve
protects the pipes where they cross over.
7 Having submitted the surface heating
pipes to a pressure test, concrete can be
laid.

Cofloor tacker system and clamping rail system
for folded board or base mat roll
for heating/cooling
2
4
3
1
1 The economical Oventrop Cofloor
tacker and clamping rail systems for folded
board and base mat roll consist of a folded
board 2 x 1 m or a base mat roll 10 x 1 m
for use with concrete or anhydrite liquid
screed. The folded board and base mat roll
are made of expanded polystyrene and are
laminated with a tissue foil with an imprin-
ted laying screen (screen distance 50 mm).
One longitudinal edge of the folded board
and of the base mat roll has a foil overlap
and the opposite edge is equipped with an
adhesive tape preventing the penetration
of humidity into the underlying insulation
when applying concrete or anhydrite liquid
screed.
The folded board and base mat roll are
classed in the thermal conductivity group
045 and 040 for 30-2 mm, building mate-
rial class B 2 according to DIN 4102 with a
maximum load of 4 kN/m and 5 kN/m for
30-2 mm.
The 14, 16 or 17 mm Oventrop PE-Xc
plastic pipes Copex, PE-RT plastic pipes
Copert as well as the composition pipes
Copipe are fixed onto the folded board
or base mat roll with tacker hooks or self-
adhesive clamping rails made of polypropy-
lene.
The folded boards and base mat rolls are
laid directly onto the concrete screed or, if
required, onto the additional insulation.
The Oventrop folded boards or base mat
rolls are laid in the same manner as the
base mats, starting in a corner of the room
opposite the entrance door. Off cuts can be
used in the same order which leaves mini-
mum wastage.
The Cofloor folded boards, base mat
rolls, tacker hocks or clamping rails allow
an economical, quick and simple laying of
all components.
The imprinted laying screen makes it easy
to lay the pipes either in a spiral or serpen-
tine pattern.
The tissue foil ensures a secure fixing of the
tacker hooks and/or the clean fitting of the
self-adhesive clamping rails.
2,3 Due to the imprinted 50 mm laying
screen on the foil, Oventrop folded boards
or base mat rolls reflect a clean and orderly
picture of the pipework with 14, 16 or 17
mm PE-Xc pipes Copex, PE-RT pipes
Copert or composition pipes Copipe.
The clear lines of the laying screen make it
very easy to tack the pipes in a straight line
with the handy Oventrop tacker machine.
4 Self-adhesive clamping rails made of
polypropylene, clamping distance 50
mm, for 14 or 16 mm PE-Xc plastic pipes
Copex, PE-RT plastic pipes Copert or
composition pipes Copipe .

7 5
1 Laying of the Cofloor system folded
board starts at the edge isolating strip
at the right hand side wall in the relevant
room. The 100 x 200 cm folded board with
the reinforced tissue foil allows a fast lay-
ing of the base. If required, an additional
insulation should be considered (see page
20 for further details).
2 If liquid screed is to be used, then the
edge isolating strip must be additionally
sealed (e.g. using a tape gun with self-
adhesive tape).
3 One longitudinal edge of the folded board
and of the base mat roll has a foil overlap
and the opposite edge is equipped with
an adhesive tape which is covered with a
plastic strip.
4 Laying the base mat roll (10 x 1 m). Ma-
terial and process are identical to those
used for the folded boards.
5 By using the Oventrop tacker machine,
laying can be carried out economically
by one single person. The 50 mm laying
screen imprinted on the foil, helps to fit the
pipes in clear and straight lines. The sta-
bility and strength of the tacker hooks and
tissue foil ensure that the pipes are fixed
securely.
6,7 The Cofloor clamping rail system
(length = 1 m) with a self-adhesive strip for
14 and 16 mm pipes, allows a clean and
fast pipe fixing without damaging the tissue
foil. This also means that it is an additional
advantage when using liquid screed.

Cofloor dry-build system for heating/cooling
Accessories
2
4
3
1
1 Apart from the base mat system and the
tacker system where wet concrete is used,
Oventrop offers the Cofloor dry-build sys-
tem. The components of the dry-build sys-
tem are suitable for renovating old buildings
as well as for new buildings. The Oventrop
dry-build surface heating/cooling system
can be combined with standard dry flooring
elements (such as Fermacell boards) but
also with normal concrete or liquid screed.
The Cofloor dry-build basic element con-
sists of 25 mm thick polystyrene foam.
It serves as thermal insulation and at the
same time as carrier for the individual dry-
build heat/cooling conducting strips. The
specific order of the grooves of the basic
element allows the Oventrop 14 x 2 mm
composition pipe Copipe to be laid either
in a spiral or serpentine pattern.
Other patterns are also possible.
Oventrop recommends using the compo-
sition pipe Copipe as it has a lower ex-
pansion coefficient than the PE-Xc/PE-RT
plastic pipes. A quiet operation within the
heat/cooling conducting strips is therefore
certain.
The strips made of galvanised sheet steel
with a thickness of 0.4-0.5 mm are the opti-
mum heat/cooling conductor into the dry
flooring elements or the concrete or liquid
screed.
The practical pre-punched breaks points of
the strips (998 mm long) allow an optimum
placement in any room.
Advantages:
- the installation of the Oventrop dry-build
system Cofloor is without wastage and
can be carried out by only one person
- overall height is reduced compared to wet
screeds
- optimum heating/cooling output via the
galvanised steel sheet strips and elbows
- no delay in the building progress when
dry flooring elements are installed
- no warm up period is to be observed with
dry flooring elements
- the floor can be walked on immediately
after installation
The Oventrop dry-build system Cofloor
can be used for wall heating/cooling even
when pipes are installed in a serpentine
pattern.
2 Dry-build element made of expanded
polystyrene (1000 x 500 x 25 mm) with a
grooved pattern for fully fitting any room.
3 Heat/cooling conducting strips installed
as 90 elbow for spiral patterned laying.
4 Installed heat/cooling conducting elbow
where the pipe loops in a serpentine pat-
terned layout.

ing strips (998 x 122 x 0.4 mm) with pre-
punched break points in the grooves of the
dry-build element.
2 Installation of the heat/cooling conducting
elbows (110 x 245 x 0.5 mm) with squeeze
fit design, allowing the pipes to be held in
the elbow without tension.
3,4 Simple laying of the Oventrop compo-
sition pipe Copipe by just one person into
the preformed channel of the heat/cooling
conducting strips and elbows.
5 Edge isolating strip and pipe conduit for
feeding pipe through the wall for dry-build
system.

is not only suitable for use with standard
dry flooring elements (t = 25 mm); it can
also be used in direct conjunction with
heavy duty laminate flooring as autono-
mous layer for load distribution (for serpen-
tine patterned layout). The requirements
according to DIN 18560-2 Constructional
requirements have to be fulfilled.
Due to the lightweight construction of the
system, the dry-build elements have to be
bonded onto the bare floor.

Cofloor dry-build system for heating/cooling
Wet-build system
2
1
The large wall surfaces of a room are ideal
for the installation of a heating or cool-
ing system with composition pipes (e.g.
Copipe).
Wall heating or cooling systems are low
temperature systems. The temperature
of the heating medium or coolant is only
slightly above or below the room tempera-
ture and most of the energy is radiated.
With the Oventrop Cofloor wet-build wall
heating and cooling system, the pipes are
fixed under plaster.
With a wet-build system, the pipes are fixed
directly onto the wall or, if necessary, onto
an additional insulation layer, using self-
adhesive, extendable polypropylene clamp-
ing rails and suitable wall fixings. This type
of construction is covered with suitable wall
plaster and then with the chosen wall fin-
ish, i.e. wall paper, structural plaster, paint,
tiles etc.
A plaster reinforcement may be necessary,
depending on the plastering system used.
It has to be carried out in accordance with
the manufacturers instructions. Plaster
re-inforcements are textile inserts made of
plastic or mineral fibres improving the ten-
sile strength of the plaster and preventing
cracks.
Contrary to floor surfaces, wall surfaces
do not represent a direct contact surface,
so the surface temperature can be slightly
higher during heating periods. For reasons
of comfort it is, however, recommended not
to exceed an average surface temperature
of 40C during heating periods. The maxi-
mum temperature load of the wall finish
may reduce this limit. The maximum per-
missible flow temperatures contained within
the instructions of the plaster manufactur-
ers must be observed.
As with underfloor heating, an incremental
heating test has to be carried out for wall
heating/cooling systems. This will confirm
that it functions correctly but is not intend-
ed to dry the wall construction. Procedure
and documentation must be carried out in

1 Snap clamping rails together to the re-
quired length. Tear off foil. Bond clamping
rails onto insulation board or wall and fix
onto the brickwork/base with suitable wall
fixings (dowel).
(Max. laying distance between clamping
rails: 80 cm vertical)
2 Feed composition pipe Copipe from the
supply of the distributor to the wall heat-
ing/cooling. Now, starting from the bottom,
press the pipe into the clamping rails in a
horizontal serpentine pattern. (Laying dis-
tance depending on the model is 10 20
cm.)
3 A space of 5 cm should be left at the
edges for plastering (from the pipe edge
to the end of the wall heating surface). The
installation of a venting facility is recom-
mended.

Cofloor system for wall heating and cooling
Dry-build system

1
The large wall surfaces of a room are ideal
for the installation of a heating or cool-
ing system with composition pipes (e.g.
Copipe).
Wall heating or cooling systems are low
temperature systems. The temperature
of the heating medium or coolant is only
slightly above or below the room tempera-
ture and most of the energy is radiated.
With the Oventrop Cofloor dry-build wall
heating and cooling system, the pipes with
the conducting strips and elbows are inte-
grated in the thermal insulation. Due to
the large-surface covering of the dry-build
elements, the conducting strips allow a
transmission of the heat into the room via
the wall finish.
The dry-build elements serve as insulation
and carrier for the conducting strips and
elbows. The pre-punched break points of
the strips allow an optimum covering of the
wall surfaces.
Provided that no additional insulation is
required, the dry-build elements are fixed
directly onto the wall between wood bat-
tens for plaster work. If an additional insu-
lation layer is required, it has to be fixed
firmly onto the bare wall.
The wall is normally covered with dry-build
boards with a thickness of 12.5 cm which
are fixed onto the battens. The dry-build
boards are covered with the required wall
finish (wall paper, structural plaster, paint,
tiles, etc.).
The dry-build wall heating and cooling sys-
tems reduces the time of construction.
Due to the dry-build system, no humidity
penetrates the wall.
Contrary to floor surfaces, wall surfaces
do not represent a direct contact surface,
so the surface temperature can be slightly
higher during heating periods. For reasons
of comfort it is, however, recommended not
to exceed an average surface temperature
of 40C during heating periods. The maxi-
mum temperature load of the wall finish
may reduce this limit. The maximum per-
missible flow temperatures contained within
the instructions of the dry-build board
manufacturers must be observed.
As with underfloor heating, an incremental
heating test has to be carried out for wall
heating/cooling systems. This will confirm
that it functions correctly but is not intend-
ed to dry the wall construction. Procedure
and documentation must be carried out in
accordance with the dry-build board manu-
facturers instructions.

1 Installation of the wood battens as sup-
port
Fix the first layer of battens horizontally
onto the wall at floor level and the second
approx. 20-25 cm above the bare floor so
that the pipes are not damaged when fixing
the skirting boards e.g. Fix the next batten
layers horizontally with a distance of 50 cm
(corresponds to the width of the dry-build
elements). Fix the dry-build elements onto
the wall using a suitable adhesive. Finally
push in the conducting strips and elbows.
2 Feed composition pipe Copipe from the
supply of the distributor to the wall heating/
cooling system. Starting from the bottom,
press the pipe into the strips in a horizontal
serpentine pattern.
(Laying distance depending on the model is
12.5 or 25 cm.)
3 Feed the return downwards behind the
conducting elbows back to the distributor.
The installation of a venting facility is
recommended.

collectors Multidis SF allow a central dis-
tribution of the heating or cooling water to
the different circuits of each dwelling unit.
The Oventrop distributors/collectors are
designed for surface heating and cooling
systems with circulation pump.
The supply and the return pipe may be
connected either on the left or right hand
side.
The brackets allow the fixing of the distribu-
tor/collector in the cabinet or directly onto
the wall.
When using a heat meter, its lengths have
to be taken into consideration when choo-
sing the cabinet.
To enlarge the depth of the cabinet, the
frame and the door have to be pulled out.
The ball valve DN 25 with temperature sen-
sor connection M 30 x 1, item no. 140 67 08,
can be used at the supply of the stainless
steel distributor/collector Multidis SF.
Hydronic balancing of the installation is
carried out with the help of the integrated
inserts of the return collector.
1 Stainless steel distributor/collector Multi-
dis SF with integrated flow measuring and
regulating devices 0-5 l/min. in the flow
distributor.
As for the distributor/collector, item no.
140 43, the calculated flow rate is set at the
handwheel of the flow measuring and
regulating device. The set value can be
read off the viewing glass with scale
(0-5 l/min.). Each heating/cooling circuit
can be isolated without modification of the
set flow rate which means that the set flow
rate is re-stored after reopening an isolated
heating/cooling circuit. The functions set-
ting and isolation are thus autonomous.

dis SF with integrated regulating inserts in
the flow distributor.
As for the distributor/collector, item no.
140 45, regulation is carried out according
to a chart (see technical information).
The calculated flow rate is set at the hidden
stem of the regulating insert. A reproducible
presetting is possible.
Oventrop offers a calculation programme

inserts M 30 x 1.5 in the return collec-
tor which are convertible to thermostatic
operation allow the individual room tem-
perature control prescribed in the Energy
Saving Directive. The Oventrop electro-
thermal actuators and room thermostats or

available as accessories, are used for this
purpose.

As with any heating system, a hydronic
balance according to DIN 18380 is also
required for the surface heating system.
Regulation of the surface heating circuit is
carried out at:
Stainless steel distributor/collector
Multidis SF, item no. 140 43 52 to
140 43 62,
via the flow measuring and regulating de-
vices at the flow distributor.
Setting is carried out whilst the circulation
pump is in operation.
All valves of the heating circuit are to be
fully open.
1 Lift the locking ring until it clicks into
position.
2 Wind up locking cap.
3 Set the calculated flow rate by turning the
red handwheel of the first flow measuring
and regulating device.
The set value can be read off at the red
indicator ring inside the viewing glass.
The scale shows values between 0 and
5 l/min. Carry out setting of all heating
circuits.
The first values are checked and
readjusted if required.
4 With the setting being completed, close
locking cap until stop. Protect setting of
the flow measuring and regulating de-
vices by pushing the locking ring down
until it clicks into position.
Isolation and opening
Each heating circuit can be isolated with-
out modification of the set flow rate which
means that the set flow rate is restored
after reopening an isolated heating/cooling
circuit. The functions setting and isola-
tion are thus autonomous.
1 Isolation:
The heating circuit is closed by turning the
red handwheel clockwise until stop.
2 Opening:
Turn the red handwheel anticlockwise until
stop. The flow measuring and regulating
device is opened and the set flow rate is
restored.

Brass distributor/collector Multidis SFI for
industrial surface heating and cooling systems
Surface heating and cooling systems for
commercial and industrial buildings are
becoming more and more important. The
ceiling heights of these buildings are usu-
ally very high and therefore an even and
economical distribution of the required tem-
perature is needed. Utilising the large sur-
face area together with a favourable vertical
temperature profile fulfils this demand.
The integration of the surface heating
system within the ground floor allows an
interior design that is free and flexible.
Conventional visible heating systems have
to be cleaned and serviced regularly, but
industrial surface heating systems do no
require individual maintenance. Surface
heating in commercial and industrial build-
ings is therefore a heat distribution system
which is economical and energy efficient
and with technical effort it can also be used
for cooling.
1 The brass distributors/collectors Multi-
dis SFI allow a central distribution of the
heating or cooling water to the different
circuits of an industrial surface heating/
cooling system. It is recommended to equip
the distributors/collectors with ball valves
DN 50. They allow the isolation of the sup-
ply and return pipe, e.g. for maintenance
work. Consoles with pipe clamps (including
sound insulation supports) allow a fixing of
the distributor/collector onto the wall.
The ball valve at the flow distributor and the
regulating valve at the return collector allow
the isolation of each heating circuit.
2 Summary with system components
Five different distributor modules with two
to six heating circuit connections allow an
individual combination of up to 20 circuits.
The individual modules are interconnected
with flat seals. The distributor/collector
ends are closed with plugs.
3 PE-Xc plastic pipes Copex sized 20 x 2mm
and 26 x 3 mm can be connected to the
heating circuit connections of the brass
distributor/collector Multidis SFI with cor-
responding compression fittings. The pipes
are made of cross-linked polyethylene and
are oxygen tight according to DIN 4726.
The sheltered oxygen barrier protects the
PE-Xc plastic pipes Copex against dam-
ages on site.
4 Hydronic balancing of the individual sur-
face heating circuits has to be carried out in
accordance with the VOB DIN 18380 stand-
ard. Regulation is carried out at the regula-
ting valves integrated in the return collec-
tor of the Multidis SFI.

Flow temperature control of surface heating systems
Control unit Regufloor H and
boiler connection system Regumat F-130
Economy and comfort of a surface heating
system can only be achieved if the correctly
calculated pipe layout and floor construction
is adhered to. Moreover, a temperature and
flow control of the heating medium adapted
to the surface heating must be taken into
consideration.
The main points of the regulation are the
provision of a permissible flow temperature
of the heating medium (this should be
separate from the boiler regulation) and the
distribution of mass flow in the individual
heating circuits of the stainless steel dis-
tributor/collector.
1 Control unit Regufloor H
Fixed value control unit for the connection
to the stainless steel distributors/collectors
Multidis SF for surface heating which also
supply a radiator circuit. The unit regulates
the flow temperature of the heating medium
to a constant value (fixed value control) by
adding some of the return flow water of the
collector with a temperature controller with
contact sensor and a three-way valve.
Control range 20-50C
Max. operating temperature 50C
Max. operating pressure 6 bar
kvs value 4.0
The medium in the heating circuits of the
surface heating system is circulated by an
electronically controlled pump. To protect
the surface heating against overheating, for
instance in case of failure of the temperature
controller, the control unit is equipped with a
module which switches the pump off.
2 The advantage of the control unit
Regufloor H is the facility to integrate
the flow tem-perature control of a surface
heating into the heating circuit of a radiator
system. The illustration displays the
connection to the supply and return of the
radiator system.
3 Flow temperature control can be carried
out directly at the heating generator by using
the Oventrop boiler connection system
Regumat F-130. Flow temperature control
is carried out by a temperature controller
with immersion sensor and a three-way
valve.
By using this solution, the whole circuit of
a heating system can be operated with the
flow temperature adapted to the surface
heating.

Weather guided flow temperature control
of surface heating systems
Control unit Regufloor HW
1 The Regufloor HW unit is used in
surface heating systems to control the
flow. Regulation of the flow temperature
is weather guided, i.e. it depends on the
outside temperature up to an adjustable
maximum. This way, the maximum permis-
sible flow temperature (e.g. 45C) for the
surface heating can be maintained.
The heating circuit controller Regtronic
RH-B of the Regufloor HW controls the
position of the three-way diverting valve
via an electromotive actuator and thus the
flow temperature. This is dependent on
the temperature measured by the outdoor
sensor and the set heating curve of the
heating circuit controller. The pump control
is also weather guided, i.e. it is switched on
during heat demand and operation of frost
protection.
Individual time profiles for switching from
day- to night time operation can be pro-
grammed for each day (Mo-Su).
Some installations may call for the control
of further functions. The heating circuit
controller Regtronic RH-B offers a free
choice of additional functions (e.g. potable
hot water preparation, re-loading, solid fuel
boiler, circulation, thermal disinfection etc.).

Flow temperature control of surface heating systems
Control unit Regufloor HX with system separation
Years of experience have shown that un-
favourable conditions in surface heating
systems with plastic pipes may lead to cor-
rosion problems caused by a penetration of
oxygen.
In pure radiator systems, such corrosion
problems normally do not entail problems
as they may deposit in a number of sta-
bilization zones.
In surface and especially underfloor heating
systems, such deposits could impair the
flow behaviour in the underfloor circuit. Mal-
functions or even a breakdown of the circuit
could be a result.
1 The heat exchanger of the control unit
Regufloor HX divides the system into a
primary and secondary circuit. The primary
circuit is the heating system and the secon-
dary circuit is the surface heating circuit.
This way, surface heating circuits with pipes
without oxygen barrier can be connected.
These can be found in old installations or,
system related, in new installations. Due to
the separation, a penetration of oxygen from
the surface heating circuit into the boiler
circuit is avoided. The other way round, a
penetration of possible corrosion products
from the boiler circuit into the surface heat-
ing circuit and thus a silting-up of the pipes
is also avoided.
The regulating valve on the primary side
serves to control the set flow temperature.
The temperature is detected with the help of
an immersion sensor on the secondary side.
The Grundfos pump ALPHA electronically
controls the pump output according to the
current heating water demand. Due to its
bronze body, the pump is corrosion resist-
ant.
2 Control unit Regufloor HX for flow tem-
perature control in surface heating systems
and for the separation of heating circuits
into a primary and a secondary circuit in
combination with the stainless steel dis-
tributors/collectors, item no. 140 43 and
140 45 consisting of:
Connection fittings, regulating valve, tem-
perature controller with immersion sensor,
heat exchanger, pressure gauge, dia-
phragm safety valve, diaphragm expansion
tank, electronically controlled pump.
Installation is carried out on the left hand
side of the distributor/collector.

Cofloor system extension for surface cooling
Control unit Regufloor HC for
alternate operation of heating and cooling
for all laying systems
The systems Base mat, Tacker, Dry-
build and Clamping rail are also suit-
able to generate a comfortable room
temperature on warmer days of the year,
when cooling water rather than heating
water is fed through the pipework. The
term thermal comfort for room cooling
is explained further in DIN 1946 part 2. It
is also described as soft or quiet cooling.
This cooling system is not accompanied by
draughts, high air movements, dust gen-
eration or high noise levels typical of the
classic air cooling methods. In addition, the
energy exchange between humans and a
cooling surface is through radiation, which
is similar to the thermal balance of human
beings.
1 If the system is operated alternately with
heating or cooling water, then the permit-
ted flow temperature must be checked
for the surface heating as well as for the
surface cooling operation. Oventrop offers
the control unit Regufloor HC for this
purpose, which will keep the temperature
of the medium at a constant set value even
during cooling operation by mixing some
return flow water. The three-way valve is
operated here by an electromotive actua-
tor 24 V (0-10 V) which receives its signals
for heating and cooling from an electronic
room thermostat.
2 The flow temperature regulating set for
outside temperature guided heating and
cooling via the corresponding surface heat-
ing and cooling systems enables an auto-
matic changeover from heating to cooling
for each application.
Flow temperature regulating set consisting
of:
Climate controller heating/cooling
Outdoor sensor
Flow temperature sensor
Room humidity measuring transducer
Memory stick
Electrothermal actuator
Electromotive actuator
Electric sensor attached to pipe
3 The controller heating/cooling is designed
for a universal application in heating and
cooling systems, e.g. for flow temperature
control in surface heating and cooling sys-
tems. With integrated measuring, control
and timed function via two PI controllers
and preset parameters for an easy initial
operation. The remote control can be used
for certain applications (remote control of
the operating mode, correction of the nomi-
nal values and setting of the clock).
4 The room humidity measuring transducer
calculates the dew point of the air humidity.
In connection with the controller heating/
cooling, it avoids condensation of the pipe-
work and chilled surfaces.

Cofloor system extension for surface cooling
Heating surface regulation for heating and cooling
Example of surface heating and cooling system
Even in surface cooling systems, the En-
ergy Saving Directive calls for automatic
devices allowing an individual room tem-
perature control. For this purpose, the
actuators mounted on the stainless steel
distributors/collectors receive their signals
from electronic room thermostats which are
suitable for switching over from heating to
cooling operation.
1 The changeover from heating to cooling is
carried out via the controller heating/cool-
ing. It is, amongst others, connected to the
outdoor sensor, the flow temperature sen-
sor as well as the room humidity measuring
transducer. The required room temperature
is calculated with the help of the measured
values of these system components and is
controlled via the electromotive actuator.
The controller heating/cooling also trans-
mits the operating mode changeover from
heating or cooling to the electrothermal
actuator for the integration of the heating or
cooling generator.
The switch-over signal is also transmitted
to the connection system and to the corres-
ponding room thermostats. Furthermore, a
dew point control can be used to protect
the chilled surfaces from condensation.
2 The room thermostat heating/cooling is
used for individual room temperature con-
trol. It has one entry for the operating mode
changeover from heating or cooling.
3 The connection system is mounted in the
cabinet of the surface heating/cooling and
serves the distribution of electric signals
and the power supply of the room thermo-
stats and actuators.

The Energy Saving Directive calls for a cen-
tral flow temperature control of the heating
medium (e.g. via the control unit Regu-
floor) and for an individual selfacting room
temperature control e.g. with room thermo-
stats and actuators.
Such regulating systems even out any tem-
perature differences (e.g. short opening of
a window).
The Oventrop room thermostats and actua-
tors fulfil these requirements. Wired and
wireless devices are available for this pur-
pose. The wired items are regulating com-
ponents which work as two point (opened/
closed) or proportional (0-10 V) actuators.
1 Room thermostat or room thermostat-
clock 230 V or 24 V with thermal actuator
230 V or 24 V for room temperature control
via the individual heating circuits. By using
the room thermostat-clock, time controlled
temperature changes can be set.
2 Distributor/collector Multidis SF inside a
cabinet with mounted electrothermal actua-
tors. The wired connection to the room
thermostats is made via a plug-in rail which
is situated above the distributor/collector.
3,4 The wireless individual room tempera-
ture control is carried out with a room
thermostat or a room thermostat-clock with
wireless transmitter and the 4 or 6 channel
receiver. The two point actuators housed in
the cabinet (see illustr. 3) are connected to
the receiver. Apart from being suitable for
new buildings, existing buildings can also
be upgraded with the wireless temperature
control.
It is also possible to switch from heating to
cooling operation.
5,6 For a wired individual room tempera-
ture control, Oventrop offers proportional
actuators (0-10 V) which work with a 24 V
supply voltage. The nominal value range of
the electronic room thermostat can be lim-
ited by use of the hidden limiting elements.
The proportional actuator has the facility to
reverse the actuation. This feature is
necessary for surface cooling.
7 Wireless receiver with time switch for 8
channels. Application in connection with
distributors/collectors with actuators.
8-channel time switch for the timed control
of up to 8 independent zones. Program-
ming of the time switch and adaptation of
the transmitters is possible with removed
cover.

Accessories for stainless steel distributors/collectors
Double regulating and commissioning valves for hydronic balancing
Heat meter connection set
2
If the room temperature in partial areas of
the heating system is reduced, it must be
ensured that the other areas are not under-
or oversupplied. This condition is governed
by the pressure drops in the pipe system
and the installed valves and can only be
determined by a heat demand and pipe-
work calculation. Oventrop offers relevant
calculation programmes which amongst
other, will deliver the settings of the valves
for hydronic balancing not only for the
regulation of mass flow to the stainless
steel distributors/collectors but also of the
individual heating circuits connected to the
stainless steel distributors/collectors.
1 Example of a two pipe heating system
with surface heating areas and radiators
connected to the risers. Balancing of the
mass flow to every stainless steel distribu-
tor/collector with a double regulating valve
Hycocon VTZ.
2 The Hycocon VTZ is a double regulating
and commissioning valve for the manual
hydronic balance between several dis-
tributors/collectors or risers. The infinitely
adjustable presetting is lead sealable and
lockable. Available with female or male
thread. The balanced mass flow can easily
be controlled with the help of the flow-
meter OV-DMC 2.
3 If it is required to measure the heat con-
sumption of separate distributor circuits,
for instance of separate dwellings, it is pos-
sible to install a heat meter connection set
in front of the corresponding distributor/
collector. These are offered by Oventrop
together with the double regulating and
commissioning valves Hycocon VTZ. For
the connection of the supply and return
pipe, the connection set is available in
angle or straight pattern. The connection
set is suitable for heat meters with a length
of 110 mm (G 3/4 male thread) and 130 mm
(G 1 male thread).
4, 5 Depending on the space available, the
Hycocon VTZ allows various installation
positions, for instance turning the heat
meter by 90 if the depth is not sufficient.

Differential pressure regulators for hydronic balancing
Heat meter connection set
2
In addition to the manual hydronic balan-
cing of the distributors/collectors by using
the double regulating and commission-
ing valves, a hydronic balance during low
demand periods can also be achieved
with the help of the automatic differential
pressure regulators Hycocon DTZ. This
ensures that the valves of the individual
heating circuits are protected from unac-
ceptably high differential pressure.
1 Example of a two pipe heating system
with radiators and surface heating areas
connected to the risers. A differential pres-
sure regulator Hycocon DTZ is installed
in front of every surface heating area. The
regulator has to be set to a nominal value
to be determined (e.g. 150 mbar). The regu-
lator will maintain a constant differential
pressure between supply and return within
a necessary proportional band.
2 The installation of an automatic differen-
tial pressure regulator Hycocon DTZ
allows that the distributor units can operate
independently. The permissible differential
pressure between supply and return can be
set and locked at the Hycocon DTZ.
A change in the system pressure has there-
fore no influence on the heating circuits of
the distributor units of the surface heating.
A manual balance is not required.
3,4 To install the differential pressure regu-
lator together with a heat meter connection
set, Oventrop offers connection sets in
angle or straight patterns (installation sizes
110 mm and 130 mm).

Individual room temperature control is
possible by mounting an electric room
thermostat and actuator or a thermostat
with remote control.
Due to stricter demands on the thermal
insulation, the heat demand of buildings is
decreasing. Being an energy-saving and
economic heating system distinguishing
itself by a high living comfort, the surface
heating offers a good solution.
In new or renovated buildings, surface
heating systems are installed at least in
individual rooms, e.g. in the bathroom,
kitchen, living room, office or winter gar-
den.
The Oventrop installation sets Unibox
allow an individual room temperature con-
trol with thermostatic valve, a temperature
limitation of heating surfaces with return
temperature limiter or a combination of
both.

Application
Installation and assembly
Application:
The different models of the Unibox are
suitable for the operation of a surface heat-
ing system in rooms with a heating surface
up to 20 m. They are designed for the con-
nection of one heating circuit. When using
pipes with an inner diameter of 12 mm, a
length of 100 m must not be exceeded.
It is to be observed that the supply and
return pipe are laid alternately side by side
(see e.g. the spiral laying in the installation
sketches pages 2, 3 and 4). A constant
heating of the floor is thus guaranteed.
The Unibox TSH / Unibox T /
Unibox E T / Unibox E TC allows the
control of the room temperature via the sur-
face heating system. It is used in combina-
tion with a low temperature heating system
with a maximum flow temperature of 55C.
The Unibox RTL / Unibox E RTL
allows the temperature limitation of heating
surfaces with return temperature limiter.
The room temperature is still controlled via
the radiator. Installation is carried out in
combination with a radiator heating with a
maximum flow temperature of 70C.
The Unibox plus / Unibox E plus /
Unibox vario / Unibox E vario allows
the individual room temperature control
with thermostatic valve and the tem-
perature limitation of heating surfaces with
return temperature limiter.
As for the Unibox RTL, installation is
carried out in combination with a radiator
heating with a maximum flow temperature
of 70C.
Installation and assembly:
For a simple installation of the pipes in the
wall, Oventrop offers a pipe conduit unit
sized to the depth of the Unibox/
Unibox E.
Installation may be carried out easily.
The pipe conduit unit and the installation
set are fixed in the wall (see illustr. 1 instal-
lation sketch). The heating pipes are laid
according to the installation instructions.
Important:
The Unibox always has to be installed
behind the surface heating circuit, i.e.
in the return pipe. The direction of flow
has to be observed (illustr. 2).
For the connection to the valve, Oventrop
offers suitable compression fittings. The
pipe conduit unit is closed and plastered.
The fixing channel is closed with the cover
plate. Control is carried out via the thermo-
stat which is easily accessible. Care should
be taken that the thermostat is not influ-
enced by other heat sources.
- Do not install near other heat sources,
e.g. additional radiators (illustr. 3).
- Protect thermostat from direct sunlight
(illustr. 4).
- Do not install at a location exposed to
draught.
Example of installation for two surface
heating circuits:
In case of heating surfaces exceeding 20 m
and a pipe length of more than 100 m
per heating circuit, it is recommended to
connect two heating circuits of the same
size to the Unibox (illustr. 5). The installa-
tion is then carried out by use of the Oven-
trop h fitting, item no. 102 87 50 and the
fitting item no. 101 63 04 or the Duo con-
nection piece.

Pressure test record of the Oventrop surface heating
and cooling system Cofloor according to EN 1264-4
Client: __________________________________________________________________________________________________
Building/
project: __________________________________________________________________________________________________
Stage of construction/
floor/dwelling: __________________________________________________________________________________________
Section of the system: __________________________________________________________________________________
Requirements
Before laying the screed, plaster or levelling compound, tightness of the heating/cooling circuits of the surface heating/coo-
ling system is tested by carrying out a water pressure test. Contrary to the VOB C (DIN 18 380 standard), the test pressure
must be at least for 4 bar and not more than 6 bar. This pressure must be maintained throughout the laying of the screed/
plaster*.
The test pressure is carried out section by section after having flushed the individual heating circuits. It must be ensured
that the succeeding sections of the system are protected from excess pressure (if necessary, by main isolation device in
front of the distributor/collector).
Alternatively, the tightness can also be tested by carrying out a pressure test with compressed air. Here, the maximum test
pressure amounts to 3 bar.

Requirements
An incremental heating process must be carried out in order to check the function of the heated floor construction. It ser-
ves the installer as documented evidence for the realization of a flawless installation. When using concrete screed, the
construction work should only be continued 21 days after having laid the screed and 7 days after having laid calcium sul-
phate screed (or according to the manufacturers indications).
According to EN 1264-4 a flow temperature between 20C and 25C must be maintained for at least 3 days. After that,
the maximum design temperature has to be maintained for at least 4 days. Manufacturer indications (e.g. for liquid screed)
deviating from the standard or this record must be observed and be recorded.

Attention
Depending on the heating capacity of the heat generator, the incremental heating process may possibly have to be carried out
section by section. In this case, all heating circuits of one screed field have to be heated at the same time.
The incremental heating process does not guarantee that the screed is dry enough to start flooring work.

Requirements
An incremental heating process must be carried out in order to check the function of the heated or cooled floor, wall or
ceiling construction.
Incremental heating of dry-build systems is only started after all filling and adhesive bonding work has been completed.
The filler and bonding agent have to be cured. The instructions of the manufacturers must be observed.
The maximum design flow temperature (in general up to 45C) has to be maintained for one day.
Where there is a risk of frost, the system has to remain in operation. Manufacturer indications deviating from the standard
or this record must be observed and be recorded.

"Aktor T 2P" Electrothermal actuators (two point)
connection thread M 30 x 1.5
Oventrop electrothermal actuators are used for
heating, ventilation and air-conditioning. The
actuators serve to control the room
temperature and can be used e. g. with
conventional radiators, radiators with
integrated distributor, distributors for surface
heating, radiant ceiling panels, chilled ceiling
systems and induction air systems in
combination with two point room thermostats.
Further applications in bivalent heating
installations.
For zone and room temperature control.
Connecting cable 1 m.
With First-Open function (except for actuators
"opened with current off") and stroke index.
Simple plug-in connection with valve adapter.
Actuators can be installed in any position.
As for the model with auxiliary switch, a pump
can e. g. be switched via the integrated volt
free contact. Due to their construction, the
electrothermal actuators are secured against
overvoltage which could occur when switching
on neon tubes. A varistor is thus not necessary.

Application:
The regulating set with "Tri-D TR" three-way

It increases the radio range between the
wireless room thermostats and the wireless
receivers and improves the transmission safety
under difficult conditions.
The radio repeater can be directly plugged into
an earthed plug, the socket can still be used.

Advantages, service
1 The almost ideal temperature profile
from floor to ceiling.
Compared to other heating systems, the
surface heating can be referred to as the
heating system with the ideal temperature
profile. Depending on its usage, the hot
water surface heating system offers the
advantage that an energy saving of 6 to
12% may be achieved due to the lower
temperature of the heating medium and the
lower room temperature.
2 As system supplier of the surface heating
and cooling system Cofloor, Oventrop
offers high quality system solution guaran-
teeing maximum benefit for the installation
and the later comfort. This does, at the
same time, mean an obligation to observe a
multitude of rules and standards.
3, 4 Working supports
Oventrop supports its partners regarding
planning, calculation, completion and
regulation. Current information material
like catalogues, technical data sheets and
colour leaflets as well as CDs and software
are available.
