Unit Plan Year 10 Mathematics and Psychology

Created by: Amy Dinsdale and Melissa Piper

Year Level: 10 Length: 4 Weeks Number of Lessons: 12
Domains: Mathematics and Psychology, ICT, Intercultural Understanding, Aboriginal and Torres straight Islanders Histories and Cultures

The material covered in the following unit will help assist students in understanding why mathematics is so important in psychology. This is done
through offering a number of different activities related to research methods in psychology as well as different activities related to statistics and
probability in mathematics for year 10 students. The following lesson plans and final summative assessment task will challenge students and assist
them in gaining an understanding in the world around them, specifically in Aboriginal and Torres straight Islanders Histories and Cultures. By the
end of this unit students should be able to collect and analyse statistical data, understand key concepts involved with statistics and demonstrating
this through the use of psychology. They will learn to understand research methods, how to graph properly and how to predict a probability of an
outcome. Students will also learn about health issues among indigenous Australians, the students will have to do a research project on this and
then are expected to present their findings, using all their knowledge that they have acquired from this unit. This unit will be using a number of
different multi-literacies including ICT, mathematics, psychology and intercultural understanding. Students use of Mind42 and movie maker
Vizzywig to present their findings promotes modern day learning and is easy to understand for the information age.

Presentation of a health issue
Due date: 31
st
October 2014

In the presentation of a health issue in groups of four you will need to research the health issue that is given to you. You are required to present a
5-minute movie using the application Vizzywig to present your findings. Each group member is expected to make equal contribution to the
assignment. Work on the assignment will be completed in class, if it is not completed by the final period of class time allocated then you are
expected to complete it at home.
The presentation of your health issue must include the following:
Outline of movie to be handed in before filming begins
Clear identification and understanding of your health issue
Accurate statistical data presented in your own way in the movie
Accurate length of film no more than 5 minutes
Movie needs to be presented creatively
Need to include all key concepts clearly
There must be appropriate editing done

how to collect statistical data
Students will be able to understand
how to read and interpret statistical
data
Accessing Engager/Connection Begin class by outlining the learning
intentions to the students
Ask students what they think statistical
data is and what it is used for

Lesson: I do Give students a quick definition of what
statistical data is and what its used for
Hand out a case study to students so
they can retrieve the statistical data
from the case
Advise students to get into groups of 3-
4, then hand out clue sheets to the
groups
Advise students that they are going to
do an activity outside and that each
group has a clue with statistical data on
it, once they have worked out the
answer it will give them a location of
another clue. There is three clues
before the clues will revile the end
location

Guided: We do Discuss students responses on what
they think statistical data is and what
its used for
Go through answers to case study
Run outside activity with students
retrieving and interpreting clues that
are to do with statistical data

Independent: You do After discussion of what statistical data
is ask students to complete the case
study
Unit Plan Year 10 Mathematics and Psychology

Students are to complete case study in
approximately 20mins
After discussion of case study students
will be asked to get into groups of 3-4
Students will then be given a clue and
told that once they have interpreted
and retrieved an answer it will revile
the next clue. They will be told that
there are three clues and then the final
destination
This will also be done as a race and the
first ones back win
Advise students they have 30 minutes
to do this activity

Generalise/review Ask students what they remember
about statistical data
Ask students if they can explain how to
retrieve and interpret statistical data
Review why statistical data is important
specifically to psychology

Assessment/Check for Understanding:
Discuss answers to the case study once students have completed it
Discuss how to interpret and retrieve statistical data and why it is important to see how
much students remember

Next Lesson Focus/Differentiation:
Students are to complete and make sure their definition books are up to date so they
can use these for revision later in the unit
Advise Students that we will be discussing Key concepts of research methods in the next
class and will be completing different activities to do with this including case studies with
Indigenous Australians
