The Numbers of the Words

Birkat Kohanim:
The Priestly Blessing and the Messiah’s Nazarite Vow
a In Hebrew, the Priestly/Levitical/Aaronic Blessing1 has a very special structure:
Each line of the blessing has a remarkable, progressive number of letters and words that
forms a most instructive pattern. We will study this amazing structure, but first, we should
look at the blessing in its Hebrew form, along with a literal translation beneath:

This was the blessing which hwhy commanded2 upon the children of Yisrael through Aharon
the great priest, and his sons:
He blesses you, hwhy, and He guards you;
He shines, hwhy, His Face to you, and He favors you;
He lifts, hwhy, His Face to you, and He puts for you shalom.
So shall they put My Name upon the sons of Yisrael, and I, I will bless them.
Numbers 6:22-27
When hwhy later spoke of His Name being called upon 3 His people, it was nothing less than a
reference to this Blessing—the blessing that put His Name on His people. Many today still
recite this blessing. However, the Name of hwhy is most often omitted being replaced with
various translations: Some use “the LORD” while others substitute the Hebrew title
“Adonai.” But are any of these replacements acceptable? We are warned by hwhy in the
Torah not to take anything away from the Word of Elohim:
4:2 You shall not add to the word which I command you,
neither shall you diminish from it, that you may keep the
commandments of hwhy your Elohim which I command you.

12:32 Specifically, all that I command you, that shall you
observe to do: you shall not add thereto, nor diminish from it.
Deuteronomy 4:2, 12:32
And in the same manner, eswhy teaches us that, until heaven and earth pass away, not even a
single jot or a tittle will pass away from the Torah.4 So while many well-meaning people
sincerely pronounce this blessing on their fellow believers, their replacement of the Name of
hwhy with a substitute title violates the Torah and the word of the Messiah.5 Further,
removing the Name from this blessing not only diminishes the Word of hwhy,6 in all
likeliness, it completely negates its intended value (of imparting the Name). This the blessing
which hwhy has commanded 7upon His people Yisrael, and no one has the right to alter it.
The use of nothing less than the Name of hwhy is also critical for another reason: eswhy
prophesied the Yahudim (Jews) would not see Him again until they said of Him, the Messiah:
Blessed is He that comes in the Name of hwhy.
Psalm 118:26, Matthew 23:398
This prophecy diametrically opposes the long-standing Jewish tradition of not pronouncing
the Qadosh9 Name of hwhy. How can the Yahudim say of their Messiah, “Blessed is He that
comes in the Name of hwhy,” when they will not even utter the Name? Quite simply, no
Messianic believer who is a physical descendant of Yahudah will ever fulfill this prophecy
until they begin honoring the Word and the Name of hwhy by speaking His Name with
reverence and honor and by proclaiming the Name of hwhy in anticipation of the Messiah’s
return. hwhy asserts His people will know and honor His Name:
Therefore, My people will know My name;
therefore, in that day, surely I am He
who is speaking, “Behold it is I.”
Isaiah 52:6 10
Thus, it is with much gratitude that we direct the hearts of all believers to the inspired Word
of hwhy and to the proper use of His Name within the Priestly Blessing.

believe the United States was blessed, not because of its own greatness, but to fulfill the promises of hwhy to our fathers.
Hence, many Messianic, American believers who utter the Name of hwhy, praise the Name of hwhy, and speak the Name
of hwhy, are even now, fulfilling the prophecy of Psalm 118 as they daily proclaim of eSwhy: “Blessed is He that comes

The Number of Words and Letters
Within the Priestly Blessing
We show the blessing, once more, before discussing the number of Hebrew letters and
words in each of its lines:

Here is the first amazing thing about the inspired structure seen in the words and letters of
this three-line blessing:
Line 1 has: 3 words and 15 letters.
Line 2 has: 5 words and 20 letters.
Line 3 has: 7 words and 25 letters.
Readers who wish to count for themselves will notice the number of words per line goes from
3 to 5 to 7, while the number of letters per line goes from 15 to 20 to 25.
The Evenness of an Odd Number, and the Middle Words of the Blessing
At first, the question might sound a bit surprising, but have you ever considered the
evenness of an odd number? Notice for the numbers 3, 5, and 7, there is one in the middle
and an even number of numbers on either side: 11

Looking at the above lines, we see that three may be represented as having one in the middle
and one on either side; in the same way, five may be represented as having one in the middle
and two on either side; and in like manner, seven may be represented as having one in the
middle and three on either side:

Seven: 3 1 3
In one sense, then, every odd number is even (or balanced), and this evenness further calls
our attention to the middle of the sequence: In every odd number, there exists a middle
number. For 1-2-3, the middle number is two; for 1-2-3-4-5, the middle number is three; and
for 1-2-3-4-5-6-7, the middle number is four. This middle number is shown just below for
each of the odd numbers 3, 5, and 7:

And if anyone thinks this is “stretching it,” there is yet another way our attention is
mathematically directed towards this middle number. In the case of every odd number, this
middle number is also the average, or the mean, of each set of numbers:

(1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5) ÷ 5 = 3
(1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7) ÷ 7 = 4
This is always the case for every odd number! So odd numbers have an amazing balance, or
evenness, or symmetry; and this evenness is both consistent and unique for every odd
number. We have shown all of this because there are significant results which come forth
from studying the middle words of each line in the Priestly Blessing. Pulling out the middle
words of each line, we get a significant message:

And there are numerous references in the Tehillim/Psalms to this aspect of the Priestly
Blessing as the people of hwhy are always saved when He turns His Face towards them:
3 Turn us again, Elohim, and cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved.
7 Turn us again, Elohim of hosts, and cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved.
19 Turn us again, hwhy Elohim of hosts, cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved.
Psalm 80:3,7,19
The light of His Face (via the Priestly Blessing) is not just a nice-sounding phrase; His light is
truly our salvation:
1 hwhy is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear?
hwhy is the strength of my life: of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evil-doers
came upon me to devour my flesh, my adversaries and my foes, they stumbled
and fell. 3 Though a host should encamp against me, my heart will not fear:
Though war should rise against me, even then will I be confident. 4 One thing have
I asked of hwhy, that will I seek after: That I may dwell in the House of hwhy all
the days of my life; to behold the beauty of hwhy, and to inquire in His Temple.
5 For in the day of trouble He will keep me secretly in His pavilion: In the covert
of His Tabernacle will He hide me; He will lift me up upon a rock. 6 And now shall
my head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me. and I will offer in His
Tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to hwhy. Psalm 27:1-6
And in the 43rd Psalm we read:
3 Send out Your light and Your truth: they shall lead me,
they shall bring me to Your set apart mountain, and to Your habitations.
4 Then I will go to the altar of Elohim, to El, the joy of my rejoicing:
yes, upon the harp I will praise You, Elohim, my Elohim.
Psalm 43:3-4
On the other hand, when hwhy turns away His Face, His light is withdrawn,12 and evil or
demise will quickly follow:

Then My anger will be kindled against them in that day,
and I will forsake them, and I will hide My Face from them,
and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them;
so that they will say in that day, “Have not these evils come upon us,
because our Elohim is not among us? Deuteronomy 31:17
Hear me speedily, hwhy: my spirit fails.
Hide not Your Face from me, lest I become like
those that go down into the pit.
Psalm 143:7
4 Then shall they cry to hwhy, but He will not answer them; yes,
He will hide His Face from them at that time, according as they have wrought
evil in their doings. 5 Thus says hwhy concerning the prophets that make my people to err;
that bite with their teeth, and cry, “Peace,” and whosoever does not put into their mouths,
they even prepare war against him. 6 Therefore it shall be night unto you, that you shall
have no vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that you will not divine; and the sun will
go down on the prophets, and the day shall be black over them. 7 And the seers
shall be put to shame, and the diviners confounded; yes, they shall all cover
their lips; for there is no answer of Elohim.
Micah 3:4-7
22 My Face will I also turn from them, and they shall pollute my secret place: for the
robbers shall enter into it, and defile it. 23 Make a chain: for the land is full of bloody
crimes, and the city is full of violence. 24 Wherefore I will bring the worst of the heathen,
and they shall possess their houses. I will also make the pomp of the strong to cease; and
their set apart places shall be defiled. 25 Destruction comes; and they will seek peace, but
there shall be none. 26 Mischief shall come upon mischief, and rumor shall be upon rumor;
then shall they seek a vision of the prophet: but the law shall perish from the priest, and
counsel from the ancients. 27 The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with
desolation, and the hands of the people of the land shall be troubled: I will do unto them
after their way, and according to their deserts I will judge them; and they shall know that I

All of these things relate to the Priestly Blessing and to walking in the light of His
countenance:
15 Blessed are the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk,
hwhy, in the light of Your countenance.13 16 In Your Name 14 shall they rejoice
all the day: and in Your righteousness shall they be exalted. 17 For You are the
splendor of their strength: and in Your favor 15 our horn shall be exalted. 18 For
hwhy is our defense;16 and the Set Apart One of Yisrael is our King. Psalm 89:15-18

This is in contrast to those who no longer have any defense after He has withdrawn the light of His countenance, His
favor, and His protection.

The Middle Letters of the Middle Words
So we have seen significant results from pulling out the middle words of each line of the
Priestly Blessing. But what about pulling out the middle letters of each of those middle
words? Pulling out the middle letters of the middle words, we get an amazing result, both in
Hebrew as well as mathematically:

Mathematically, these six letters add up to 111:

Of course, 111 is not only an odd number, it literally displays the same pattern seen in the
blessing itself, since its three digits present a one in the middle with a one on either side:

But combining these six Hebrew letters in their unchanged order, we not only get two words,
we also get an amazing message:

“Hōn” is Strong’s 1952, and means wealth, riches, or substance:

Nwh = hōn = wealth/riches/substance


However, when this word takes on the yod ending, the nun sofeet ( N ) becomes what we
might call “a regular nun” ( n ) and the yod suffix shows possession. Thus, this word may be
correctly translated as “my wealth,” or “my substance:”
ynwh = hō-nee = my wealth/riches/substance
But to what wealth/riches/substance does hwhy refer? The wealth of hwhy is His people!
They are His inheritance! And hwhy has said this many times:
But hwhy has taken you, and brought you forth out of
the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be to Him
a people of inheritance, as it is this day.
Deuteronomy 4:20
Yet they are Your people, and Your inheritance,
which You brought out by Your mighty power and by
Your stretched out arm. Deuteronomy 9:29
For the portion of hwhy is His people;
Ya’acob is the lot of His inheritance.

and all their transgressions wherein they have transgressed against You,
and give them compassion before them who carried them captive,
that they may have compassion on them: 51 For they are Your people,
and Your inheritance, which You brought forth out of Egypt,

Save Your people, and bless Your inheritance:
feed them also, and lift them up for ever.
Psalm 28:9
Blessed is the nation whose Elohim is hwhy;
and the people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.

Amazing to think that the One who made such magnificent planets, stars, and far-reaching
galaxies; the One who has formed such beauty, color, and fragrance in flowers, trees, and
fruit; the One who has designed a world-full of magnificent living creatures; above all these
unfathomable accomplishments, hwhy most highly values His relationship with His people!
He treasures us far above all these things! Do you see why our prayer-fellowship is so
important to Him?
The Middle Letter(s) of the Letters in Each Line
What about pulling out the middle letters of each of line (“middle” here being determined
by the number of letters in any particular line)? Pulling out the middle letter(s) of each of the
lines, we get still another amazing result:

wy (Line 2, the YOD and VAV are the 10th and 11th letters)
l (Line 3, this LAMED is the 13th letter)
In sequence, these letters give us:

Together, these form no Hebrew word ( lwyw ), but in reverse they give us “Levi Vav:”

Of course, this is more than interesting since the sons of Aharon were Levites, but we do not
know what to make of the lone VAV:
• Since VAV may also be a Hebrew prefix meaning “and,” is this a prefix with no word yet
attached and thus, it has been given by hwhy with the intention of forming a yet unanswered,
prophetic question meaning: “Levi and ”…?

• Or is “Levi Vav” possibly the name of a future Levite, perhaps in the Millennial Kingdom,
so that this result is literally prophetic of one who is still to come? This is quite plausible:
Since the Torah is prophetic, and since hwhy will raise up Levites for ministry-service in the
1000-Year Messianic Kingdom,17 we see this as a very real possibility.
The Favor Displayed in the Letters of the Aaronic Blessing
Let us look now at the number of letters in each line of the blessing:
Line 1 has: 15 letters
Line 2 has: 20 letters
Line 3 has: 25 letters
We note that each number is a multiple of five. And five is the number which very often
represents the favor of hwhy.18 Since there are 15 total words (3 + 5 + 7) in the blessing (one
in the middle and seven on either side: 7 1 7 ), the eighth word is the centermost word in the
entire utterance. This central word has the Hebrew word for favor as its root:
Nnx = chanan = favor19
The favor which is bestowed on Yisrael by the impartation of the Name is seen yet another
amazing way within the lines of the blessing. Since each line has 15, 20, and 25 letters, and
since each of these three numbers is a multiple of five, we have this profound result:
3 x 5 = 15 letters (Line 1)
4 x 5 = 20 letters (Line 2)
5 x 5 = 25 letters (Line 3)
Notice we get 3 – 4 – 5, and putting these numbers together, in order, we obtain the three-
digit number: 345. But 345 is the misparim of the Hebrew word “MSh” (ha’Shem), meaning
“the Name:”

None of this is coincidental since the Levitical Blessing imparted the Name of hwhy and His
favor upon His people, all for the sake of making His Name yet greater! hwhy blesses His
people as part of His unstoppable intent to bring honor to His Name in all the earth:20
Elohim will favor us, and bless us, shining His face upon us. Selah. 2 That Your way
may be known on earth, Your salvation among all nations. 3 Let the peoples praise You,
Elohim. Let all the peoples praise You. 4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy: For You
will judge the peoples with uprightness, and govern the nations on the earth. Selah. 5 Let the
peoples praise You, Elohim. Let all the peoples praise You. 6 The earth has yielded its
increase: Elohim, even our Elohim, will bless us. 7 Elohim will bless us,
and all the ends of the earth shall fear Him.

As we see from its numerology, the Levitical Blessing pulsates with the favor of hwhy, the
light and favor which only come through the impartation of His Qadosh Name.
The Levitical Priesthood:
Not Complete Apart From the Messiah
There is also an amazing result when we look at the three-digit number formed by the
number of words in the three lines of the Priestly Blessing: Recall that the number of words
in each line progresses from 3 to 5 to 7:

Yet if we make this progression into a three-digit number, we get 357. One cannot help but
notice this number falls just one short of the misparim for the Hebrew word “Mashiach” (that
is, the Messiah):

This adds still more meaning to the fact the Messiah came to fulfill the Torah:21 Nothing
could ever be in its rightful place, in the fullest possible way and in the fullest sense, until the
Messiah came, bringing light and immortality to light through the Good News:
The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah comes
(He that is called ‘Anointed’): when He has come,
He will declare to us all things. John 4:25, ISRV
… Who has saved us, and called us with a set apart calling,
not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and favor,
which was given us in the Messiah eSwhy before the world began,
10 but is now made manifest by the appearing of our Savior eSwhy
the Messiah—who has abolished death, and has brought life and
immortality to light through the Good News. 2Timothy 1:9-10
Because 357 falls one short of 358, we are also given yet another indication the Levitical
Priesthood was subject to and secondary to the Melchi-tzedek Priesthood. However, we
emphasize that this statement in no way lessens the importance of the Levitical Priesthood.
For, in the future, hwhy will still choose Levitical Priests to serve in His Kingdom:
19 And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the
nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the islands
afar off, that have not heard My fame, neither have seen My splendor; and they shall declare
My splendor among the Gentiles. 20 And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering
unto hwhy out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and
upon swift beasts, to My set apart mountain Yerushalayim, says hwhy, as the children of
Yisrael bring an offering in a clean vessel into the House of hwhy. 21 And I will also take of

them for priests and for Levites, says hwhy. 22 For as the new heavens and the new earth,
which I will make, shall remain before Me, says hwhy, so shall your seed and your name
remain. 23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one
Shabbat to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me, says hwhy. Isaiah 66:19-23
Just as significant as the above Scripture is another one in which hwhy indicates the Levites
will be as the stars of heaven and the sand of the seashore in number:
17 For thus says hwhy: David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne
of the house of Yisrael; 18 neither shall the priests, the Levites, want a man before
Me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meal offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.
19 And the Word of hwhy came to Jeremiah, saying, 20 Thus says hwhy: “If you can break
My covenant of the day, and My covenant of the night, and that there should not be day
and night in their season, 21 then may also My covenant be broken with David My servant,
that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests,
my ministers. 22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the
sea measured: so I will multiply the seed of David, My servant,
and the Levites that minister unto Me. Jeremiah 33:17-22
So while the Levitical Priesthood is of perpetual importance before hwhy, it is still subject to
the Melchi-tzedek Priesthood. In another study in this series, we previously contemplated
some Scriptures which indicate how the Levitical Priesthood was subject to and secondary to
the Melchi-tzedek Priesthood.22 We will momentarily revisit and reconsider those texts and
provide a similar discussion surrounding the gifts of the Spirit being the spiritual counterpart
to the Urim and Thummim, the Lights and Perfections. But first, we should ponder the
amazing, Messianic fulfillment of Bemidbar/Numbers chapter 6!
The Messianic Nature of Bemidbar/Numbers Chapter Six
For many, it has been an ongoing and unsolvable enigma: Why does the sixth chapter of
Bemidbar, or Numbers, provide a detailed account of the Nazarite vow and then, with no
apparent transition, jump right into the commandment regarding the Aaronic Blessing?
In many cases, when a Scripture seems enigmatic,
one can certainly suspect it may well be Messianic in nature.
And if a text is prophetic of the Messiah, it will generally
remain esoteric until it is resolved by the life and
teachings of eSwhy, the Son of Elohim.
And this is certainly the case here: Why was the Nazarite vow so linked with the Aaronic
Blessing, set forth together, as they are, within the Book of Bemidbar/Numbers? It all
provides us with another revelation of the Messiah. The Messiah (358) took a Nazarite vow
and was then exalted as ha’Cohen ha’Gadol—the Great Priest after the order of Melchi-
tzedek. eSwhy entered into a Nazarite vow just before He was exalted as the New High Priest
over Yisrael! There is an amazing, prophetic connection between the Nazarite vow (seen in
Bemidbar/Numbers 6:1-21) and the Priestly Blessing (seen in Bemidbar/Numbers 6:22-27).
And we will see this connection is answered in the Messiah of Yisrael and His exaltation.

When one took the vow of a Nazarite, he or she could no longer partake of wine or strong
drink for the duration of that vow:
1 And hwhy spoke to Mosheh, saying, 2 Speak to the children of Yisrael,
and say to them, When either man or woman shall make a special vow, the vow of
a Nazarite, to separate himself unto hwhy, 3 he shall separate himself from wine and strong
drink; he shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any
juice of grapes, nor eat fresh grapes or dried. 4 All the days of his separation he will eat
nothing that is made of the grapevine, from the kernels even to the husk. 5 All the days of his
vow of separation no razor shall come upon his head, until the days be fulfilled, in which he
separates himself unto hwhy. He shall be set apart; he shall let the locks
of the hair of his head grow long. Numbers 6:1-5
The only two topics in Numbers 6 are the Nazarite vow (spoken of first) and the Priestly
Blessing (commanded by hwhy at the end of the chapter). Following the very same order
seen in Bemidbar 6, eSwhy the Messiah made a Nazarite vow during Pesach,23 at the end of
what many have called, “The Last Supper:”
26 And as they were eating, eSwhy took bread, and blessed it,
and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is My body.
27 And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink you

eSwhy made this Nazarite vow just prior to His being exalted in the Presence of hwhy as the
new High Priest over Yisrael. En route to His being appointed as the Great Priest—ha’Cohen
ha’Gadol—the next thing of significance that occurred was the disobedience of the High
Priest, Caiaphas.
63 But eSwhy held His peace. And the high priest answered and said to Him,
I adjure you by the living Elohim, that you tell us whether you are the Messiah,
the Son of Elohim. 64 eSwhy said to him, Yes; nevertheless I say to you, Hereafter
you will see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the
clouds of heaven. 65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He has spoken
blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now you have
heard His blasphemy. 66 What do you think? They answered and said,
He is guilty of death. Matthew 26:63-6625
So Caiaphas rent his garments. Yet there is a clear commandment, given in the Torah, that
among other things, the high priest was not to rend his garments:

nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother; 12 neither shall he go
out of the Set Apart Place, nor profane the Set Apart Place of his Elohim;
for the crown of the anointing oil of his Elohim is upon him: I am hwhy.

And the fact that the high priest was commanded not to rend his garments is where the
prophetic Word of hwhy gets so interesting over the entire subject. Because of the details
seen in this Torah commandment, many believe 26 when Caiaphas rent his garments before
eSwhy, because of his disobedience to this particular mitzvah/Torah commandment, he
actually divested himself of his priestly office and opened the way for the Messiah to become
the new High Priest of Yisrael.27 And because the Messiah was the Unblemished Lamb,
death had no power upon Him: Because the Savior was without sin, death ultimately had no
legal, spiritual claim upon the Son of Elohim.28 Thus, upon His ascension to the Father,
eSwhy was made “a priest forever after the order of Melchi-tzedek:”
1 hwhy said unto my Sovereign, You sit at My right hand,
until I make Your enemies Your footstool … 4 hwhy has sworn,
and will not repent: You are a priest for ever
after the order of Melchi-tzedek.
Psalm 110:1,4
5 So also, the Messiah exalted not Himself to be made a
High Priest; but He that said to Him, “You art My Son, this day I have
begotten You.” 6 As He also says in another place, “You are
a priest for ever after the order of Melchi-tzedek.”
Hebrews 5:5-6
As ha’Cohen ha’Gadol, the Great Priest, eSwhy now blesses us and places the Name of hwhy
upon us, just as indicated/prophesied in the Levitical Blessing at the end of Numbers 6! So
not only did the Messiah come the first time in the Father’s Name, He now intercedes on
behalf of His people, imparting the Father’s favor by continuing to place the Name/Spirit of
hwhy upon those who draw near to hwhy through Him. This is how the Messiah eSwhy is
now fulfilling His prayer-promise to continually make known the Name of hwhy to His
followers:
And I made known to them Your Name,
and will make it known; that the love with which You
loved Me may be in them, and I in them.
John 17:26

So the Messiah indicated He would reveal the Name of hwhy to His chosen ones and that this
would occur continually after His ascension to the Right Hand of the Father. And it would all
be the result of the Savior’s ministry as ha’Cohen ha’Gadol—the Great Priest (often
translated as the High Priest). So we will now give additional thought to some of the ways in
which the Messiah fulfills the Word and promise of Elohim as He reveals the Father’s Name,
hwhy, by placing the Qadosh Name upon His people.
The Messiah Reveals the Name of hwhy
as He Imparts the Name/Spirit to His Followers
When one believes on the Name of the Messiah,29 he or she is sealed by Ruach
ha’Qodesh, the Set Apart Spirit of promise:
… 11 in Whom also we were made a heritage, having been
foreordained according to the purpose of Him who works all things after
the counsel of His will; 12 to the end that we should be to the praise of His splendor,
we who have first trusted in the Messiah: 13 in whom you also, having heard the
Word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation, in whom, having also believed,
you were sealed with Ruach ha’Qodesh30 of promise, 14 which is an earnest
of our inheritance, until the redemption of the purchased possession,31
to the praise of His splendor. Ephesians 1:11-14
Notice the words of Sha’ul: This sealing by the Spirit of hwhy was intended to be “to the
praise of His splendor.” Interesting that the emissary actually wrote this twice! Repetition
always adds emphasis to the Word of hwhy and intends to attract our attention. As we ponder
the phrase “to the praise of His splendor,” it becomes evident Sha’ul was referring to a
Scripture spoken by the prophet Yeshayahu (Isaiah):
I am hwhy, that is My Name:
and My splendor I will not give to another,
nor My praise to graven images!
Isaiah 42:8
The Name of hwhy is challenged whenever His praise and splendor are attributed to another.
In contrast to this false worship, when the Messiah gives the Spirit of hwhy to His chosen
ones, He is, thereby, revealing the Father’s Name with the very result seen in the Isaiah
prophecy: His children praise His splendor! They fulfill the Shema by loving His Name with
all their hearts, souls, minds, and strength. The truth of what we are saying is still further
confirmed when we understand this Seal of the Living Elohim32 is spiritual in nature and that
it places the Name of hwhy on the foreheads of those who love His Name:
After this I saw four messengers standing at the four corners of the earth,
holding the four winds of the earth, that no wind should blow on the earth,
or on the sea, or upon any tree. 2 And I saw another messenger ascend from
the sunrising, having the Seal of the Living Elohim: and he cried with a great
voice to the four messengers to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,

This Seal makes hwhy Himself the heritage of those who fear and love His Name:
For You, Elohim, have heard my vows:
You have given me the heritage of
those that fear Your Name.
Psalm 61:5
35 For Elohim will save Tziyon, and build the cities of Yahudah;
and they shall abide there, and have it in possession. 36 The seed also
of His servants shall inherit it; and they that
love His Name shall dwell therein.
Psalm 69:35-36
hwhy Himself is the Reward of the righteous, just as He said to Abram:
After these things the word of hwhy came to
Abram in a vision, saying, “Fear not, Abram: I am
your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”34
Genesis 15:1
The initial sealing, at one’s conversion, is only the beginning: It is the earnest of our
inheritance. Hence, the question still remains: Will we sow to the Spirit so that His fruit
multiplies within us?35 And will we cultivate the gifts of the Spirit so that we might return
much more to the Messiah than He has initially given us?36 There is a warning for those
cowardly servants who do not rightly use what He has given them.37
As we press on through life seeking to “know Him and the power of His resurrection,”38
we are transformed by the renewing of our minds,39 His Name increasingly becomes a part of
our character; those who press on to completely overcome will display His Name in their
foreheads:
3 And there shall be no curse any more: and the throne of Elohim
and of the Lamb shall be therein: and His servants shall serve Him;
4 and they will see His face; and His Name will be on their foreheads.
Revelation 7:1-3
We should study more details of this process in authentic spiritual growth. And specifically,
we should do our best to find answers to this question: “What role does hwhy intend for gifts
of the Spirit to have in relation to the spiritual benefit of our fellow believers?”

Spiritual gifts are special manifestations of the Name of hwhy,
given to us by the Messiah.40 And the Spirit’s intent in giving such
marvelous gifts is to magnify the Memorial Name of hwhy
and to build up the Assembly.
In another study in this series,41 we have seen a few Scriptures which indicate how the
Levitical Priesthood was subject to and secondary to the Melchi-tzedek Priesthood. We now
provide those texts, along with a discussion surrounding the gifts of the Spirit being the
spiritual counterpart to the Urim and Thummim.
The Messiah Manifests the Name of hwhy
via the Spiritual Gifts—the Urim and Thummim
Every believer in the Messiah has one or more spiritual gifts. And gifts of the Spirit are
largely given to teach and edify the Assembly: hwhy intends these gifts will be used for
adorning His Tabernacle; that is to say, spiritual gifts are given for fostering the fullness of
the Spirit within all of His people:
… 21 in whom all the building, being joined together, grows into
a set-apart Dwelling Place in hwhy, 22 in whom you also are being built
together into a dwelling of Elohim in the Spirit. Ephesians 2:21-22
It is to this end that all true shepherds will labor and strive. For those who have a heart which
is in accordance with the heart of hwhy, also know that dwelling among His people is the
Most High’s ultimate goal/desire:
3 And I heard a great voice out of the Throne saying, Behold, the tabernacle
of Elohim is with men, and He shall dwell with them, and they shall be His people,
and Elohim Himself shall be with them, and be their Elohim: 4 and He will wipe
away every tear from their eyes; and death shall be no more; neither will there be
mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more: the first things have passed away.
Revelation 21:3-4
Even now, gifts of the Spirit should impart some measure of this comfort to the people of the
Most High:
Comfort you, comfort you, My people, says your Elohim.
Isaiah 40:1
3 Blessed be the Elohim and Father of our Sovereign eSwhy the Messiah,
the Father of mercies and Elohim of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction,
that we may be able to comfort those that are in any affliction, through the comfort with
which we ourselves are comforted of Elohim. 5 For as the sufferings of the Messiah abound
to us, even so our comfort also abounds through the Messiah. 6 But whether we are afflicted,
it is for your comfort and salvation; or whether we are comforted, it is for your comfort,
which works in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer:

7 And our expectation for you is steadfast; knowing that, as you are
partakers of the sufferings, so also you are of the comfort.
2Corinthians 1:3-7 42
Gifts of the Spirit bring honor to hwhy by imparting His Presence and comfort, causing His
people to stand in greater love and awe before His Name.43 Spiritual gifts reveal the Name of
hwhy, imparting a glimpse of His light and majesty. As a result, hwhy, through His Spirit, will
dwell more greatly among us.44 And as a nation of priests, all New Covenant believers
should use their spiritual gifts to help others. With a servant’s heart, we should lovingly work
to bring fellow believers into a place of greater love and service by sharing the few fish and
loaves the Messiah has imparted to us. In administering gifts for the edification of others, we
must continually acknowledge that He is the only One who can bless and multiply our feeble
efforts.45 And it is only through freely giving that our abilities are multiplied.46
We see that the spiritual gifts in the Melchi-tzedek Priesthood answer to the Urim and
Thummim—the Lights and Perfections—which were before the high priest in the Levitical
Priesthood in the days of old. Said differently, the Urim and Thummim were prophetic types
of the spiritual gifts. In Hebrew, the two words look like this:

Because the Messiah is now the Great Priest over Yisrael, in Mosheh’s prophecy, eSwhy is
the One who is ultimately spoken of as possessing the Urim and Thummim:
And of Levi he said, “Your Thummim and your Urim are for your Chasid,47
whom you tested at Massah; you contended with Him at the waters of Meribah.”
Deuteronomy 33:848
We see the Chasid spoken of in this text as being the Messiah—the One now exalted to the
Right Hand of hwhy as a High Priest forever after the order of Melchi-tzedek. But while
eSwhy, the High Priest, possesses the Urim and Thummim, the Savior also taught the Spirit
would take from what is His and give to His followers; the Messiah will share those Lights
and Perfections with His chosen ones:

magnify Me: because of Mine He will take, and declare it to you. 15 All things
whatsoever the Father has are Mine: therefore I said, that He takes
of Mine, and will declare it to you. John 16:13-15
It is through the Spirit, and through the gifts of the Spirit, that the Messiah continues to
declare the Name of hwhy to His brothers!49 And other New Covenant Writings show us yet
more clearly how these gifts from above are the Lights and Perfections of the Father:
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights, with whom
there is no change, nor shadow of turning.
James 1:17
So we see the Father of lights50 bestows upon us every good and perfect gift in the Spirit:
These spiritual gifts bear the hallmarks of His light and His perfection. They manifest His
Name and His greatness. They give forth the light of His Word51 and the splendor of His
ways.52 The words of Sha’ul also reveal gifts of the Spirit to be the Lights and Perfections:
8 Wherefore He says, When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive,
and gave gifts to men. 9 (Now this, “He ascended,” what is it but that He also
descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He that descended is the same also that
ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And He gave some to be
apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 for
the perfecting of the set-apart ones, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the
body of the Messiah: 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge
of the Son of Elohim, into a fullgrown man, unto the measure of the stature
of the fullness of the Messiah. Ephesians 4:8-13
Gifts of the Spirit emanate with the light and the perfection of hwhy, and those gifts impart
that light and perfection/completion unto His people in/through the Spirit of Elohim. In His
light, we see light:
For with You is the fountain of life;
in Your light we see light.
Psalm 36:9, ISRV
As a result, our minds are continually transformed to think, feel, and do what hwhy thinks,
feels, and does: eSwhy is formed within us53 as we grow to have the mindset of the
Messiah.54 This is how the Messiah and High Priest continues to manifest His Father’s Name
to His people.

Summary
Those priests who spoke forth the commanded blessing on Yisrael, in the Name of hwhy,
were mediators of many victorious battles; and the light of hwhy imparted through their
ministry-service brought deliverance to the nation many times.55 As it is written in the 124th
Psalm:
Our help is in the Name of hwhy,
Maker of the heavens and earth.
Psalm 124:8, ISRV
When the prophet David wrote of the Aaronic Blessing in Tehillah 42, he referred to the
lovingkindness (chesed) of hwhy which Elohim had commanded 56 for the benefit of the sons
of Yisrael:
By day hwhy commands His lovingkindness, and in the night
a song is with me: a prayer to the El of my life.
Psalm 42:8
Recall that the three lines of the blessing progress from having 3 words to 5 words to 7
words. And from this progression, we derived the three-digit number, 357. Thus, as
remarkable as this blessing was and is, we see the Levitical Blessing as having been
incomplete until the Messiah’s coming. So even though much can be said of this Aaronic
Blessing, the 357 set forth in the three-line utterance would never be complete until the
Messiah (358) came. For eSwhy would be the One to place the Name of hwhy yet more fully
on His people. And we have certainly seen how eSwhy—exalted in the heavens as ha’Cohen
ha’Gadol (the Great Priest) —miraculously places the Name of hwhy on His followers. We
have seen how the Father of Lights (Urim) bestows the splendor of His Name on His people
through gifts of the Spirit, gifts which are imparted to us from the Messiah—the Chasid who
possesses the Urim and Thummim. These gifts impart increasing perfection (Thummim), that
is to say, increasing completeness upon those Messianic, New Covenant believers who are
seeking first His Kingdom and His righteousness.
We pray these many considerations will not only bring edification to our current readership,
but that they will also help new readers to better understand why reverencing the Name of
hwhy is not optional, and why all those who sincerely trust in the Messiah of Yisrael should
obey Him by honoring His Father’s Name.57 t

An Excellent Translation of the Scriptures


The INSTITUTE FOR SCRIPTURE RESEARCH is an organization of Messianic believers based in
South Africa. They have published an excellent version of the Word of hwhy which they
have called, “The Scriptures.”
“ISRV” is an abbreviation which readers will have seen at various locations in the study.
