You are on page 1of 4

Dear Mr.

Gavin,
This is my reply to your campaign mailer, (copied below) which I received on Monday 10-27-2014.
FRONT

BACK

After receiving your mailer I find myself questioning your integrity. Your mailer is factually inaccurate and full of
deceptions and untruths.
Let me, for the record, challenge each deception or untruth as I see them.
1A. The front of your mailer you show a person who is claimed to be a Republican who supports you. No problem yet.
1B. On the back of your mailer you claim you are endorsed by Republican leaders. Problem; see below.
1C. Your mailer seems to imply you are the Republican candidate. That is the only political party mentioned in your
mailer.
Relative to 1B please be specific, who are the Republican leaders that endorse you? A list of Washoe County
Republican leaders can be found at http://www.washoegop.org/leadership/ I have reached out to all of the Officers
and Committee Chairs via email and as yet none have acknowledged endorsing you. They may ultimately do so but it
would be much easier to confirm your endorsements if you simply cited which of those Republican leaders endorsed
you so folks like me can contact them for verification
My opinion of your mailer at this point is you are trying to hide the fact you are a Democrat and mislead voters into
thinking you are a Republican. If this were not true I believe you would have identified yourself as the Democrat
candidate in your mailer or on your website (http://votejohngavin.com/) which also has no reference to, or mention of
the, Democrat party or you as the Democrat candidate. It only has reference to the Republican leaders who "endorse"
you; found on the Issues page of the web site.
Next in the area of deceptive, misleading and/or untrue statements is everything you printed about Jeanne Herman.
Your mailer states: (Note: I changed your bullet list to a numbered list for ease in referencing each item.)
John Gavins Opponent, Jeanne Herman:
1. Opposes Governor Sandovals fiscal and economic development policies. Link to the video you reference...
http://bitly.com/1yIrIkQ
2. More taxes: wants some county residents to pay more. Link to the RGJ article you reference...
http://on.rgj.com/1yIrUAP
3. Opposes Governor Sandovals educations policies, calling them an evil stepchild of Agenda 21. Links to the
email by Jeanne Herman you reference... http://bitly.com/1p3dbjC and to her campaign website, also referenced...
http://bitly.com/1p3enUb
4. Opposes expanded transparency in government. Link to the video you reference (same as item 1 above)...
http://bitly.com/1yIrIkQ
I have fact checked your references (which I linked above) and found the following with regards to your statements:
1. This statement is untrue. I watched the entire video and the only comment Jeanne Herman made regarding
economic and development policy was that she questions the fairness of giving tax breaks to some businesses and not
others. Questioning the fairness of a policy is not the same as opposing it; your statement is false.

2. More taxes: This statement is, as a minimum, a gross misrepresentation of facts. The issue in question was about
fire protection which Jeanne Herman, and others are paying for with their tax dollars while some residents in the same
neighborhood receive the same services without paying taxes. Jeannes comment was, and I quote from the reference,
"If they are getting fire protection, I would imagine they should be paying their fair share," Herman said.(Emphasis
added) She did not suggest anyone should pay more only that everyone receiving fire protection should pay taxes on an
equal (fair) basis.
3. Opposes the Governors education policies: You have misrepresented this entire issue. Your reference is to an email
from Jeanne Herman to the Senate and Assembly of the NV legislature. Her email addresses Common Core. I submit
Common Core is exactly what Jeanne Herman stated an evil stepchild of Agenda 21. I also think while Governor
Sandoval may be a supporter of Common Core (for now) it is not his policy but someone elses policy (that being the
United Nations) which he supports. I see a difference; perhaps you dont. More on Common Core later.
4. Opposes transparency in government. This statement, relating to the same video as item 1, is also completely false.
The only issue in the video regarding transparency in government was a question regarding Nevada Open Meeting Law
(OML). When questioned about expanding the existing law Jeanne commented she believed the existing law was both
necessary and adequate. That is not a statement of opposition to any form of expanded transparency in government.
Nor did she say she opposed any possible changes to the OML. She only stated her opinion is the law was both
necessary and adequate. I dont know how you could possibly, legitimately, conclude she "Opposes expanded
transparency in government" from her statements in that video. I think 'your' statement demonstrates how little you
know about Jeanne Herman!
Judging from your mailer I must conclude your positions on the foregoing issues are as follows:
1. It is fair to offer some businesses tax free or reduced tax incentives while doing nothing for the core businesses that
have historically supported the state.
My opinion is that it is not fair but may be rational under some circumstances. Jeanne Herman only questioned the
fairness of such policy; she did not oppose the policy as your mailer states.
2. Your position on this topic seems consistent with your position on item 1. Jeanne Herman pays a tax for fire services
and her neighbor does not. In the event of a fire either Jeanne or her neighbor would be served by the same fire crew
from the same department using the same equipment. Your position seems to be it is alright for some people not to pay
tax for fire services while others carry the entire tax burden. Jeannes position was she thought everyone should pay
their fair share of the taxes. I take it you disagree with that concept, or perhaps this was just an attempt to demonize
Jeanne.
3. You apparently support Common Core educational policies as does Brian Sandoval. Jeanne Herman and Lt. Governor
Mark Hutchinson do not . If you do support Common Core you should be aware of this http://bitly.com/100pz80 and
this http://bitly.com/100pFN7 and this http://wapo.st/100pMYQ and thishttp://on.wsj.com/100pUHX And, while
you are learning about Common Core and Agenda 21 I recommend you check out this website
http://www.democratsagainstunagenda21.com/common-core-is-agenda-21.html You see, even informed Democrats
agree with Jeanne Herman that Common Core is (figuratively speaking) the evil stepchild of Agenda 21. It would also
appear the statement on your mailer, "They know John is the only candidate in this race who understands the issues and
will work for common-sense solutions.", is incorrect. It appears you either don't "understand the issues" as was claimed
or you are going to work for Common Core and U.N. Agenda 21 as a solution.
4. I dont think I need to say much about your views on transparency. The lack of transparency in your mailer speaks
volumes. You certainly weren't transparent enough to acknowledge yourself as the Democrat candidate. You dont
seem to place much value in the truth either, which I think also goes to the issue of transparency.
After reading your campaign mailer and doing detailed fact checking I'm convinced you:
1. Think it is fair for some businesses to pay much lower taxes than others.
2. Think it is fair if one citizen pays a tax for fire service when another citizen, in the same neighborhood, gets the same
fire service without paying the tax.
3. Support Common Core AND Agenda 21 and,
4. Are not transparent in your political dealings
And so... I think it is fair to say I wont be voting for you next Tuesday,
Regards,

Tom Prentice
