High Resistance Grounding System
Siem ens Energy & Autom ation offers
high resistance grounding equipm ent
specifically designed foruse in industri-
al environm ents w here continuous
processes are used and equipm ent
shutdow ns are not an option. In these
applications,the userprefers to
m aintain service during ground fault
conditions w hile providing alarm
indications that w ill lead to quick
location and correction of the fault or
a planned and orderly shutdow n of
the process.
Siem ens low -voltage neutral grounding
system s w ith pulsing ground fault
detection circuitry are provided in tw o
variations: a free standing unit orone
included in the Siem ens 480V m etal
enclosed low -voltage pow ercircuit
breakersw itchgear.
Siemens low-voltage neutral
grounding systems perform
the following functions:
I Provides a high resistance ground
connection fora 480-volt three-
phase pow ersystem . This
provides the continuity of service
associated w ith ungrounded
system s,w hile reducing the high
transient over-voltages associated
w ith them .
I Provides an im m ediate indication
of the first system ground.
I A llow s the system to operate until
the fault is located and corrected.
I Provides a m ethod forlocating
the fault quickly,before a second
fault occurs.It should be noted
that high resistance grounding
system s cannot serve phase to
neutral loads.

General Description
D uring norm al conditions,w ith no
ground fault on the system ,no voltage
appears across the grounding resistors.
A w hite indicating light on the panel
indicates that control voltage is available
and that the system is turned on.
W hen a ground fault occurs,the
resistors lim it the ground current to a
low value,adjustable betw een 0.92
and 3.69 am peres. The voltage coil of
the m eterrelay w ill sense the voltage
across the resistors during a ground
fault condition. In orderto lim it the
voltage present on the instrum ent door,
it is sensed across half of the resist-
ance.W hen a ground fault occurs,an
auxiliary relay, operated by the m eter
relay, has contacts that illum inate a red
indicating lam p and m ay be used for
rem ote indication and annunciation.
The red light and rem ote signal rem ain
until the condition is cleared and the
system is reset.
To trace the ground fault, the operator
turns the pulse sw itch on.This initiates
the cycle tim eralternately energizing
and de-energizing a contactorthat
parallels a second resistorw ith the
grounding resistor.The result is a
periodic fluctuation in the m agnitude
of the ground current,doubling
its value.A green indicating
lam p follow s the pulse.

A clam p-on am m eteris then used to
first see the signature of the pulse at
the loop in the resistorgrounding w ire,
and then trace the fluctuations in
ground current through the system to
the point of fault. The signature current
fluctuation observed on a portable
clam p-on am m eterstops once the
ground fault is betw een the am m eter
and the neutral resistor.A current
transform erand panel-m ounted
am m eterw ill allow the operatorto
determ ine the current fluctuations
on the system .
A fterthe ground point has been
located and rem oved from the system ,
the operatorturns the pulse sw itch off,
de-energizing the pulse cycle tim er
circuit,and depresses the reset button
to reset the fault indicating light and
alarm contacts.
Taps are provided on the resistors to
adjust the m agnitude of the ground
current in the range of 0.92 to 3.69A ,
depending on the size of the system ,
so that the current through the resistor
to a ground fault w ill be slightly greater
than the system s natural capacitance
charging current.Both the grounding
resistorand pulsing resistorshould be
set to the sam e value.
