2. USED TOO/BE USED TO (ING)/GET USED TO (ING)
When I was at school, I used to play basketball every Saturday.
We didnt use to have a dishwasher in our hold house.

Se diferencia "used to" de otras dos estructuras parecidas, pero con significados diferentes: "to be used
to + ing" (estar acostumbrado a algo) y "to get used to + ing" (acostumbrarse a algo).
He isn't used to studying. l no est acostumbrado a estudiar.
Are you used to studying?Ests (t) acostumbrado a estudiar?

Por ejemplo: He'll get used to her. [hil getyustuher]. l se
acostumbrar a ella.
llegar a algo". Por ejemplo: They became used to eating bread. [dei bikeimyustu iitingbred]. Se
acostumbraron a comer pan.
Por ejemplo: They grew
used to listening to her. [dei griu yustulistening tuher]. Se acostumbraron a escucharla.
Cuidado!:
"Sujeto + verbo "to be" conjugado + used to + Sustantivo Verbo
en "ing"" con la otra estructura que era: "Sujeto + used to + verbo en infinitivo"
"Be used to" significa "estar acostumbrado a".
"Used to" significa "sola hacer algo que ya no hago".
"be used to" lleva despus del sujeto el verbo "to be" conjugado en
"Present Tense" o "Past Tense", etc. y a "used to" le sigue o bien un sustantivo, o bien un verbo en
"ing".

When I was at school, I would play basketball every Saturday.

3. EXPRESSING HYPOTHETICAL MEANING
I wish.
I wish you were here Ojal estuvieses aqu (pero ahora no lo ests)
Dont you wish you were as rich as Bill Gates?
pasado. Veamos ejemplos:
I wish you hadn't told me that - Ojal no me hubieses hablado de eso (pero lo hiciste y ahora me arrepiento de
ello.
5

c) Wish + could or would: por lo general, estas estructuras nos servirn para expresar el deseo de que algo que
consideramos poco probable ocurra en el futuro. Ejemplos:
I wish I could go to your birthday party, but Im afraid I will be away Ojal pudiese ir (en el futuro) a tu fiesta de
cumpleaos, pero me temo que estar fuera.
I wish it would snow tomorrow Ojal nevase maana
I wish my father would lend me his new Porsche Ojal mi padre me prestase su nuevo Porsche (pero lo veo
difcil).
Ejemplos:
Mike is always talking about his new mobile phone. I wish he would talk about something else once in a while!
I wish I could stop worrying so much Ya me gustara poder dejar de preocuparme tanto.
e) If only:
utilizarla en oraciones exclamativas: If only you were here today! Si estuvieras aqu hoy!
f) Would rather / Would sooner:
I would rather / I would sooner you didn't ask me for any more money - Preferira que no me pidieses ms dinero.
Would you rather I came back later - Prefieres que vuelva ms tarde?
Id rather she hadnt said that Ojal ella no hubiese dicho eso
Id rather go by train Preferira ir en tren
g) It's time/ It's high time / Its about time:
It's time you had a haircut - Ya va siendo hora de que te cortes el pelo.
Its about time you went to bed Ya va siendo hora de que te vayas a la cama (deberas haberlo hecho hace una
hora)
h) What If / Suppose / Supposing:
Suppose someone finds out the truth about him Imagnate que (suponte que) alguien averigua la verdad sobre
What if she asks to marry you?
consideramos poco probables:
What if / Suppose /supposing she asked to marry you, what would you do? - Suponte que te pidiese que te
casases con ella. Qu haras?
Supposing you won the lottery, how would you spend the money?
What if she had refused, how would you have felt?
habras sentido?

6

Suppose she had asked to marry you. What would you have done? Imagnate que te hubiese pedido que te
casases con ella. Qu habras hecho? (el caso es que no lo hizo)..

4. MODAL VERBS

ABILITY Can-could-be able to- manage to (infinitivo)- succeed in (ing)
PERMISSION Can-could-may-allow to (infinitivo)-be allowed to (infinitivo)-let-permit
PROHIBITION Can`t-mustnt-ban-forbid
POSSIBILITY May-might-could
CERTAINTY Must- Cant Have + past participe

OBLIGATION Must (obligacin interna)-have to (obligacin externa)
NO OBLIGATION Dont have to-dont need to (no necessary)- neednt (infinitivo)(no necessary but you do)

5. ADVERBIOS DE GRADO (adverbs of degree)
A Little= a bit,slightly
A lot, very=absolutely, completely, extremely, really, totally
More than a little, but less than a lot = fairly, pretty, rather or quite
Rather con ideas negativas o sorprendentes: I must say I was rather disappointed with your exam results.
Utilizamos quite con el significado de completely con right, sure and different,: Are you quite sure that
you want me to tell Alex about this?
Usamos extremely, fairly, quite, rather, really, slightly o very con adjetivos y adverbios : good, happy o
hard. She was very angry when she heard what he had done.
delighted. She was absolutely furious when she Heard what he had done.

He went out to buy some milk
II) Despus de algunos verbos como advise, agree, appear, choose, decide, expect, hope, learn, manage,
offer, promise, refuse, seem, tend, threaten, want, etc. Ejemplo: She promised to be back by 10 oclock
(Prometi estar de vuelta antes de las 10).
III) Despus de adjetivos como angry, happy, glad, bad, good, etc. Ejemplo: I am happy to see you (Me
(excepto de why): I dont know where to go(no s a dnde ir),pero I dont know why she left so early (no s
porqu se march tan temprano).
V) Despus de would love, would like y would prefer para expresar una preferencia especfica, no
general: Id love to go for a walk (esta oracin no significa que, como norma general, a m me guste salir a pasear,
VI) Despus de sustantivos: It has been a pleasure to meet you (ha sido un placer conocerte).
VII) En oraciones con enough y too.
- The child is too short to reach the shelf El nio es demasiado bajo como para llegar a la estantera.
-He isnt tall enough to reach the shelf No es lo suficientemente alto como para llegar a la estantera.
7

VIII) Con la estructura it + be (en el tiempo que corresponda) + adjetivo + of + objeto:
It was very nice of him to remember my birthday (fue muy amable por su parte el acordarse de mi cumpleaos).
The boss called me only to put
off the meeting (el jefe me llam nicamente para cancelar la reunin).

B) CUNDO SE UTILIZA UN INFINITIVO SIN TO?
I) Despus de los verbos modales. Ejemplo: I must be back at 10 o clock (debo estar de vuelta a las 10)
Ejemplo: Id rather have stayed in last night
(preferira haberme quedado en casa anoche).
III) Despus de los verbos let, make, see, hear, watch y feel, seguidos de un objeto:
- His parents made him apologise (sus padres le hicieron disculparse)
- They dont let him watch TV (no le dejan ver la televisin)
Compara
made to apologise.

consider, continue, delay, deny, enjoy, escape, excuse, fancy, finish, forgive, imagine,
involve, keep, look forward to, mention, mind, miss, object to, postpone, practise, prevent,
report, resist, risk, save, stand, suggest, understand, etc.
I like cooking (en general, me gusta cocinar), pero I like to eat a healthy breakfast (en este caso, estamos
- Its no use : no sirve de nada
- Its (not) worth : merece / no merece la pena
- Whats the use of?: qu sentido tiene? / de qu sirve?
- Cant help : no poder evitar
- Theres no point (in): no tiene sentido
- Cant stand: no poder soportar.
- To be used (or accustomed) to: estar acostumbarado a.
- To get used (or accustomed) to: acostumbrase a.
- Have difficulty in: tener dificultades en.
- Apologise for: disculparse por.
- Accuse + object + of: acusar a alguien de algo.
Ejemplo: They were accused of distorting the facts (les acusaron de tergiversar los hechos)
- Prevent + object + from: impedir a alguien que haga algo.
Ejemplo: They tried to prevent her from leaving (trataron de impedir que se fuera)
V) Despus del verbo go, para indicar actividades fsicas: We go jogging every Saturday.
VI) Despus de waste time o spend time: they wasted their time playing video games.
8

entered without knocking at the door (entr sin llamar a la puerta).

I) Infinitivos sin to: We must leave.
II) Infinitivos con to: They want to leave.
III) Passive infinitive: The work will have to be left until tomorrow (el trabajo tendr que dejarse - ser dejado-
hasta maana.
IV) Perfect passive infinitive: The building seems to have been destroyed (el edificio parece haber sido destruido)
V) Continuous infinitive: Our guests seem to be leaving now (parece que nuestros invitados van a marcharse
ahora).
VI) Perfect infinitive: They seem to have left (parece que se han marchado)
VII) Perfect continuous infinitive: They seem to have been waiting for a long time (parece que han estado
esperando durante mucho tiempo).

E) QU VERBOS PUEDEN IR SEGUIDOS DE UN INFINITIVO O DE UN GERUNDIO SIN QUE CAMBIE SU SIGNIFICADO?
I) Begin, start y continue.
seguidas:
- John began to sing (correcto)
- Jonh began singing (correcto)
- Its beginning to get cold (correcto)
- Its beginning getting cold (incorrecto)
II) Advise, allow, permit, recommend y encourage.
They dont allow us to smoke here (seguido de un objeto).
We are not allowed to smoke here (en forma pasiva).
They dont allow smoking here.
III) Despus de las estructuras it needs, it requires e it wants, pondremos una forma terminada en -ing.
No es lo mismo decir:
I want to paint the kitchen (quiero pintar la cocina) que The kitchen needs painting.
Otro ejemplo: I need to repair my car (Yo necesito arreglar el coche. No puedo ir a trabajar).
The car needs repairing (El coche no necesitar reparar nadar; necesita que alguien lo repare).

F) QU VERBOS Y EXPRESIONES CAMBIAN DE SIGNIFICADO SEGN VAYAN SEGUIDOS DE UN INFINITIVO O DE UN
GERUNDIO?
I) Remember, Forget, Regret, Go on y Stop.
I remembered to buy the tickets
I remembered buying the tickets
qu? De comprar las entradas. Luego:
9

I remembered to buy the tickets = Me acord de comprar las entradas (Me acord de que tena pendiente
comprarlas).
I remembered buying the tickets = Record haber comprado (anteriormente) las entradas. Es decir, primero las
compr y luego record haberlo hecho.

I forgot to buy milk.
Ill never forget flying over the Alps.

I regret to tell you that you have failed. Lamento algo. Decirte que has suspendido. Primero lo lamento y luego te
lo digo.
I regret telling you that you had failed.

Algo similar ocurre con stop y go on:
I stopped to buy the newspaper: iba en mi coche y me detuve.

I tried to lift the suitcase, but it was too heavy.
Why dont you try adding some salt to the meat? Its tasteless.

- I never meant to hurt you Nunca tuve la intencin de hacerte dao

IV) Want y need.
- I want to buy a new car Quiero comprarme un coche nuevo (es mi deseo)
- This house needs / wants painting once again La casa no quiere nada. En todo caso, necesita que alguien la
vuelva a pintar.

V) To be afraid:
- Im afraid of losing my job - Tengo miedo de perder mi trabajo.
algo:
- Im afraid to climb up that tree Me da miedo subir a ese rbol (estoy demasiado asustado como para hacerlo
me dan miedo las alturas)

VI) To be sorry. Tambin esta expresin puede tener significados distintos. As:
a) Im sorry to hear she has been fired.
As:
Im sorry to hear she has been fired = I regret to hear she has been fired
10

b) Im sorry for being so unfair to you. En este caso to be sorry + for significa disculparse por algo. Luego:
Im sorry for being so unfair to you = I apologise for being so unfair to you.

Estoy
describiendo cmo me siento.

estoy describiendo.

8. TOO AND ENOUGH
"enough" (suficiente - bastante)y "too"(demasiado).
Nota: "too" sin un adjetivo delante significa "tambin". Por ejemplo: "I like ice cream." Me gusta el helado. "Me
too." [mi t]A mi tambin.

I havent enough money- no tengo suficiente dinero
Is it good enough for you?- My car is big enough. Mi coche es suficientemente grande.
Negaciones
adverbio + "enough". - You are not old enough. No eres suficientemente mayor.

Too Cuando "too" modifica un adjetivo o adverbio, va delante (no detrs como "enough"). Esta es, por tanto, la
principal diferencia entre "enough" y "too"
Tanto con too como con enough utilizamos to ms infinitivo.
We dont have enough money to buy a bigger house
He is too young to come with us. Es demasiado joven para venir con nosotros.

You are too good to be true. Eres demasiado bueno para ser verdad. Nota: Ponemos "too" delante de "good" que
-"Not too good"---> No demasiado buena. Indico que su trabajo no es bueno.
-"Not good enough"---> No lo suficientemente bueno.
Not too good at math. No demasiado bueno en matemticas Gracioso
post en ingls.

9. FOR, SINCE, ALREADY, YET, JUST
FOR: La partcula 'for' se combina con el Presente Perfecto para indicar la duracin.
Ellos han vivido aqu durante cinco aos. They have lived here for five years.

SINCE: La particular 'since' tiene un significado diferente, ya que expresa el punto de partida, es decir,
cuando comenz algo. Ellos han vivido aqu desde 1998 They have lived here since 1998.

I have already cleaned the house.
11

Normalmente
lo colocamos al final de la frase.
Yo todava no he limpiado la casa. I haven't cleaned the house yet.

I have just cleaned the house.

10. EVER Y NEVER
experiencia. Has ido alguna vez a Inglaterra? Have you ever been to England?
She is the tallest person I have ever seen.
It is the only dog I have ever had.

Yo nunca he viajado a Inglaterra. I have never travelled to England.
Yo no he viajado nunca a Inglaterra. I haven't ever travelled to England.
Tanto 'so' como 'such' pueden ir seguidas de la partcula 'that', y completamos la frase de esta manera.

11. SO Y SUCH
She is so interesting

She is such an interesting woman

She is so interesting that I always go to her
lessons.
She is such an interesting woman that
I always go to her lessons.

Recuerda, adems, que 'so' puede ir en combinacin de las palabras 'much' y 'many'. Utilizamos
He drinks so much water...
Si el sustantivo es contable utilizamos 'many'. Tengo tantos primos... I've got so many cousins...

12. SO, NEITHER, NOR
espaol a mi tambin o a mi tampoco.
I like chocolate (me gusta el chocolate)
So do I (a mi tambin)
12

So does he (a l tambin)
So does Sally (a Sally tambin)
So do we (a nosotros tambin)

I dont like chocolate (no me gusta el chocolate)
Neither do I (a mi tampoco)
Nor do I (a mi tampoco)
Nor does she (a ella tampoco)
Neither does she (a ella tampoco)

I must go now (debo irme ahora)
So must I (yo tambin)
So must we (nosotros tambin)
I cant speak Spanish (no s hablar espaol)
Nor can I (yo tampoco)
Neither can I (yo tampoco)
Nor can my cousin (mi primo tampoco)

I am a doctor (soy mdico)
So am I (yo tambin)
Im not a doctor (no soy mdico)
Neither am I (yo tampoco)

traducirlas?:

I like neither tea nor coffee.
She can't speak either Spanish or English.

13. HAVE SOMETHING DONE (CAUSATIVE PASSIVE)
Me he cortado el pelo

SUJETO + HAVE/HAD + OBJETCT + PARTICIPIO Me he cortado el pelo. I had my hair cut.

13

Voy a pintar mi casa. I'm going
to have my house painted.
Voy a pintar mi casa. I'm going to paint my house.

I've had my car stolen.

Someone has stolen my car).
Me he
cortado el pelo. I got my hair cut.

No suele utilizarse
con frases en futuro.

14. COUNT NOUNS AND UNCOUNT NOUNS

COUNT NOUNS
Count nouns have two forms: singular and plural.
Singular count nouns refer to one person or thing: a book; a teacher; a wish; an idea
Plural count nouns refer to more than one person or thing: books; teachers; wishes; ideas
Singular count nouns
Singular count nouns cannot be used alone. They must have a determiner: the book; that English
teacher; a wish; my latest idea
Plural forms
We usually add s to make a plural noun: book > books; school > schools; friend > friends
We add -es to nouns ending in ss; -ch; -s; -sh; -x
class > classes; watch > watches; gas > gases; wish > wishes; box > boxes
When a noun ends in a consonant and -y we make the plural in -ies... lady > ladies; country >
countries; party > parties
but if a noun ends in a vowel and -y we simply add -s: boy > boys; day > days; play > plays
Some common nouns have irregular plurals: Man > men; woman > women; child > children; foot >
feet; person > people
Plural count nouns do not have a determiner when they refer to people or things as a group:
Computers are very expensive. Do you sell old books?

UNCOUNT NOUNS
Some nouns in English are uncount nouns.
We do not use uncount nouns in the plural and we do not use them with the indefinite article, a/an.
We ate a lot of foods > We ate a lot of food
We bought some new furnitures > We bought some new furniture
Thats a useful information > Thats useful information
We can use some quantifiers with uncount nouns:
He gave me some useful advice.
They gave us a lot of information.
Uncount nouns often refer to:
Substances: food; water; wine; salt; bread; iron
Human feelings or qualities: anger; cruelty; happiness; honesty; pride;
Activities: help; sleep; travel; work
Abstract ideas: beauty; death; fun; life

14

Common uncount nouns
There are some common nouns in English, like accommodation, which are uncount nouns even though
they have plurals in other languages:
advice baggage equipment furniture homework information
knowledge luggage machinery money news traffic
Let me give you some advice.
How much luggage have you got?
If we want to make these things countable, we use expressions like:
a piece of... pieces of... a bit of... bits of... an item of... items of...
Let me give you a piece of advice.
Thats a useful piece of equipment.
We bought a few bits of furniture for the new apartment.
She had six separate items of luggage.
but we do not use accommodation, money and traffic in this way.

DEFININING RELATIVE CLAUSES
"I spoke to the man who lives next to the bowling alley" (Habl con el hombre que vive al lado de la
bolera)
"Who lives next to the bowling alley" es la oracin de relativo.

Tambin existen adverbios relativos.
When (equivalente a in which, o on which): Adolescence is a time when you need you friends.
Where (equivalente a in which o at which): John wants to visit the village where his grandfather was
born.
Why (equivalente a for which): That is the reason why he will be sent to prison.

WHO-WHOM
Who/whom son bsicamente pronombres relativos.
Who significa "quien, que."
Whom significa "a quien."
Estos pronombres reemplazan a un sustantivo.

Frmula:
Si hay duda entre who/whom, use el mtodo (he/him) para elegir el pronombre correcto.
15

Si se puede contestar con "he" = who
Si se puede contestar con "him" = whom (un truco: "him" acaba en "m" como "whom")
Ejemplos:
A. Who/whom sent the roses? (la respuesta es "He sent the roses).
Entonces utilizamos "who": Who sent the roses? - Quin envi las rosas? l las envoi
B. To who/whom should I address this letter?. Respuesta: "You should address the letter to him. - "To
whom should I address this letter" es la opcin correcta. - A quin debo dirigir esta carta?. Debes
dirigrsela a l.

NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES

Mr. Smith, who called yesterday, is coming to dinner El Sr. Smith, que telefone ayer, va a venir a
cenar.
Mr. Smith is coming to dinner El Sr. Smith va a venir a cenar.

tales como his, her, their, etc., con el significado de cuyo, -a, -os, -as. Un ejemplo:
Ive just met Julia. His husband works in Barcelona.
Ive just met Julia, whose husband works in Barcelona Acabo de conocer a Julia, cuyo marido trabaja
omitir.

WHO-WHOM
Who/whom son bsicamente pronombres relativos.
Who significa "quien, que."
Whom significa "a quien."
Estos pronombres reemplazan a un sustantivo.
Frmula:
Si hay duda entre who/whom, use el mtodo (he/him) para elegir el pronombre correcto.

Nota:

20. VERBO LIKE

22

21. ADVERBIOS OF MANNER AND OPINION
brilliantly, calmy, obviously, sadly, actually, clearly, hopefully, interestingly, personally,
strangely, surprisingly, unfortunately.
He slowly took his phone out of his pocket
Slowly, he took his phone out of his pocket.
He took his phone out of his pocket slowly.

corner, I saw a car coming towards me.
-Cuando hablamos del trabajo de la gente. She has been working as a doctor for more than twenty
years.

Cuando hablamos de deportes o ciertas enfermedades. Shes absolutely brilliant at tennis. Scientists
have not yet found a cure for cancer. Pero algunas enfermedades (illnesses) tienen excepciones en
esta regla. If you go out without a jacket you might catch a cold.

23. CONCECTORES
A) Expressing contrast (contraste).
gerundio. Despite his illness, he went to work. He was ill. Despite that, he went to work.
II In spite of: tiene el mismo significado que despite. In spite of his illness, he went to work.
He was ill. In spite of that, he went to work.
III Although (aunque).
Although he was ill, he went to work.
IV- Even though.
Even though he was ill, he went to work.
V However / Nevertheless (sin embargo)
He was ill. However, he went to work.
VI On the one hand / On the other hand: por una parte / por otra parte.

B) Expressing purpose (finalidad):
Ejemplo:
23

II - To / in order to / so as to: normalmente (vase nota inferior), podremos utilizar las tres formas de manera
Siempre irn seguidas
de un verbo en infinitivo. Vamos a ver ejemplos:
I went to Madrid to learn Spanish.
I went to Madrid so as to learn Spanish.
I went to Madrid in order to learn Spanish.
to), su estructura ser la siguiente: so as not to + infinitivo o tambin in order not to + infinitivo, como
podemos ver en estos ejemplos:
I hurried so as not to miss the train.
I hurried in order not to miss the train.
Nota: Existe un caso en el que podremos utilizar indistintamente in order to o to, pero no so as to: cuando
el infinitivo preceda al verbo principal.
Ejemplos:
In order not to miss the train, we hurried - Para no perder el tren, nos dimos prisa.
So as not to miss the train, we hurried.
denominadas contrastive clauses, en cuyo caso pondremos, so as o in order antes del infinitivo, precedidos
de not. Su estructura ser la siguiente:
Not + (so as/ in order) + to + infinitivo (primera oracin)
But + (so as / in order) + to + infinitivo (segunda oracin)D
De este modo, podemos decir:
Ive come here not to argue with you, but to apologise for what Ive done.
Ive come here not so as to argue with you, but to apologise for what Ive done.
Ive come here not in order to argue with you, but to apologise for what Ive done.
III - So that / In order that. So that es mucho ms comn.
Im saving money so that my daughter can/will go to university - (Yo) estoy ahorrando dinero para que mi hija
As:
so that + will, can o el presente simple, pero
Si el verbo principal va en pasado, pasado perfecto o condicional, utilizaremos en la subordinada so that +
would o could:
I saved money so that my daughter could /would go to university - (Yo) ahorr dinero para que mi hija fuese
(pudiese ir) a la universidad.
b) Cuando la oracin final sea negativa:
I hurried so that I wouldnt miss the train - Me di prisa para no perder el tren.

Im learning Spanish so that I can work in Argentina - Estoy aprendiendo Espaol para poder trabajar a Argentina.
C) Expressing cause and reason
I - Because: I went to bed at 9.00 p.m. because I was very tired.

aparecer con mayor frecuencia al principio la oracin, aunque tampoco sera incorrecto decir: I went to bed at
nominal: I was twenty minutes late because of her/ the traffic - Llegu veinte minutos tarde por su culpa / por
culpa del trfico.
V - Owing to / Due to / On account of: Son equivalentes ms formales de because of, con lo que tendrn
traducciones similares. Irn seguidos de una frase nominal. Veamos ejemplos:

There is a scarcity of fruit owing to the fact that it didnt rain last year Hay escasez de fruta debido a que

hecho algo: I took a book (just) in case I had to wait for him - Me llev un libro por si tena que esperar por l (en
Inasmuch as the President has not divulged the name of the members involved, it was unanimously decided by
the committee that the President be ...

Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always at the
same time as an end and never simply as a means.
medio.
E) Expressing time differences
after.
Existen 3 tipos de "Time Clauses".
refieren al pasado: When I got home, I phoned the shop (Cuando llegu a casa, llam a la tienda).
- When (cuando): Pay no attention to himwhen you get home.
- Before (antes de): Should I tell her before she leaves?
- After (despus de): After you get to work, drink a glass of wter
- Until / Till (hasta): I won't leave until you tell me.
- As soon as (tan pronto como / en cuanto): As soon as I hear from her, I' ll give you a telephone call.
F) Connectors of addition, tambin llamados conectores continuativos o de secuencia. Se utilizan para dar
continuidad a la idea que estamos expresando. Son los siguientes:
In addition (adems)
In addition to (adems de)
Furthermore (adems)
Then (entonces)
Besides (adems)
Moreover (adems)
Also (adems)
