CROSS LAMI NATED TI MBER

GENERAL
Refer to the Conditions of Contract, Specific Conditions and Preliminary and General
Section of this specification which apply to all work of this section.

SCOPE
The manufacturing requirements, supply and installation of Cross Laminated Timber
(CLT) panels comprising the following building elements:
Upper and lower level structural floors
Exterior walls
Interior walls
Structural pitched roof

CODE COMPLI ANCE
CLT is not yet covered by the NZ Building Code. The Territorial Authority has
approved its use for this project as an Alternative Solution under the provisions of the
Building Act. The Alternative Solution documents are bound with the appendices
and must be observed in all aspects of manufacture, supply and installation.

STANDARDS
The Alternative Solution stipulates the applicable and adopted AS/NZS standards for
manufacture and installation. Follow the requirements of these Standards in all
respects.

MANUFACTURERS SPECI FI CATI ON
Refer to the XLam NZ Ltd manufacturers information provided which governs the
manufacture and quality of the CLT panels.

ADVANCE ORDERI NG
Order the panels no less than 6 weeks prior to delivery.

CHECK DI MENSI ONS
Examine the contract drawings, schedules and specifications to ensure that the work
is completely described and accurately dimensioned. If errors, omissions, or
inconsistencies are discovered, notify the Architect in writing before commencing the
contract.
Liaise with XLam NZ Ltd over any discrepancies which may arise between drawing
dimensions and on-site measure to enable any necessary adjustments to panel
sizes to be made prior to manufacture.
Instruct XLam NZ Ltd on any construction tolerances required and advise of
dimensional adjustments to suit.

DELI VERY
Co-operate with XLam NZ Ltd to ensure that the panels are delivered in suitable
weather conditions. Take care to avoid damage to components during transport and
unloading operations. Report any damage to the Engineer before panels are
installed.
Plan the work to achieve just-in-time delivery from factory to site. Arrange the work
so that if possible panels are lifted into final position directly from the truck.

SI TE STORAGE AND PROTECTI ON
If on-site storage is required, panels must be evenly supported clear of the ground
on timber gluts placed at 2m maximum centres and securely covered from the sun
and rain. Factory applied protective wrappings shall be left on until immediately
before panel placement. The Main Contractor shall be responsible for the storage
and protection of panels once delivered to site.

HANDLI NG
The weight of XLam panels necessitates an engineer-designed approach to site
lifting. Panels will be delivered with pre-marked and drilled lifting positions for
craning. Returnable lifting eyes will be supplied by XLam NZ Ltd for screwing in
place by the Contractor. No other lifting method shall be used without express
approval of the Engineer.
For lifting calculations the weight of CLT panels may be taken as 530kg/m
3
.
Take care to avoid impact damage to panel edges during lifting and
placing. If it is necessary to lever or hammer panels into a fitted position,
do so using boards to protect edges from damage.

WEATHER PROTECTI ON
Unless requested otherwise by the customer, XLam panels are supplied with a
factory-applied water repellent and mould inhibiting protective coating to all faces.
However if exposed to prolonged wetting the timber will absorb moisture and
because of its mass the drying process can be slow.
Plan the work sequence to keep weather exposure of the panels as short as
possible.
Maintain continuity of work until the building is closed in.
Avoid ponding and should it occur, immediately broom water from the panel surface.
Where it is inevitable that floor panels will be exposed to rain for more than 30 days,
Give the floor immediate protection with heavy duty polythene sheet securely taped
at the joins.

CUTS AND PENETRATI ONS
CLT panels are primary structural components which rely particularly on the upper
and lower board layers for strength. On-site cutting, checking and penetrations must
be have prior approval of the Engineer.
All penetrations and any trimmed edges shall be given immediate protection by an
application water-repellent preservative. Fill and seal lifting eye holes immediately
after placing the panels.

SCREW FI XI NG
Engineered screw fixings are used in general. The type, size and location of fixings
are shown on the construction detail drawings.
Pre-drill all screw fixings into or through CLT panels with a pilot hole 80% of the
screw diameter. Screws shall have a vertical threaded embedment down into the
base material of no less than 7 x screw diameter and be located no closer to panel
edges than 4 x screw diameter.
Where coach screws are specified, they shall be fixed through round washers
generally and square washers where fixing wall plates to CLT floors. Countersink the
washers where it is necessary to recess the coach screw heads below the panel
surface.
Where it is not possible to clamp materials together and there is a risk of the screw
driving the components apart, ensure a tight fit is achieved by using washer hex
head screws and increasing the diameter of the hole through the outer component
so that the head will draw the surfaces firmly together when tightened.
