TRUTH & BEAUTY

60 FOR 60

In April 1954, three-time Le Mans winner Luigi Chinetti became

Ferraris official U.S. importer. The United States hasnt been the
same since. Movie stars, rich guys, race-car drivers and various dubious poseurs all clamored for the fast Italian cars, conniving, threatening and pleading with Chinetti and every other North American Ferrari
dealer since for the honor and thrill of ownership. To celebrate those
60 years, a glorious collaboration between Ferrari North America, the
City of Beverly Hills and Ferrari owners and collectors brought to
Rodeo Drive some of the 60 most significant Ferraris ever made. No
easy task, but there they were. Come to think of it, glorious is too
wimpy a word to describe them.

WE LOVE INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOWS.

In the case of the Paris motor show, we get terrific
cars in one of the most beautiful cities on the
planet. While not quite as big a deal as the Frankfurt juggernaut with which it alternates years, Paris still has key
introductions aplenty. Some years there are long, stunning
French concept cars to ogle; some years there arent. This
year the stars we chose from la Ville Lumire came from
outside La Rpublique: the Lamborghini Asterion, Jaguar
XE, Volkswagen XL Sport and Infiniti Q80 Inspiration.
But there was also the Citron Cactuswell always have
the Citron Cactus.

BEST IN SHOW

LAMBORGHINI ASTERION
The smokin Asterion LPI 910-4
is a significant departure for the
Raging Bull brand. Why? Well,
its a (gasp!) plug-in hybrid, it
skims the vaunted 1,000-hp figure and its interior was actually
designed with roominess and
ergonomics in mind. Last but not
least, this is the first non-insane
Lamborghini since the Miura.
The Asterions near-1,000-hp
all-wheel-drive plug-in hybridness comes courtesy of the
Huracns 610-hp, 5.2-liter V10.
It joins three electric motors
two at the front wheels and the
third, an integrated starter and
generator between the V10 and
the seven-speed dual-clutch
transmission. The motors total
300 hp. Lamborghini claims that
the Asterion can hit 60 mph in

exactly three seconds, on

its way to 200 mph. The
Asterion can run on electricity
for 32 miles and can do 57
mpg. Its 910 hp puts it right in
the middle of the Porsche 918
Spyder (875 hp), McLaren
P1 (903 hp), and Ferrari
LaFerrari (950 hp). Like those,
the Asterion manifests the
hybrid drivetrain as a go-fast
tooltwo powertrains, need
we remind, are almost always
faster than one.
Lamborghini calls the
Asterion its hyper-cruiser,
and it could be produced today,
according to the automaker,
using technologies available
and drawing on Lamborghinis
own expertise.

MOST FUN

VOLKSWAGEN XL SPORT
How can a Ducati-powered
car not be awarded Most Fun?
Volkswagen took the XL1 hybrid
and installed a 197-hp, 1,199cc
Ducati V-twin borrowed from the
Superleggera, the worlds most

powerful two-cylinder bike. The

mid-engine cars 0-62-mph sprint
is a respectable 5.7 seconds,
with a 168-mph top speed. Not
bad. Like the XL1, the center
monocoque and most body pan-

els are carbon-fiber-reinforced

polymer. The car weighs just
1,962 pounds, and the 0.258
coefficient of drag is among the
best in the biz. There are vanes,
ducts and vents, Ducati decals
and scissor doors. The retractable spoiler was lifted from the
Lamborghini Aventador. This is

INFINITI Q80 INSPIRATION

JAGUAR XE

Infiniti promised to make a statement in Paris, and the stunning

Q80 Inspiration concept definitely didit looks and feels like a
modern luxury car. OK, its hot.
So? There were lots of hot cars
in Paris. Ah, but wait, theres
more. The car is called Inspiration
for a reason: You are looking at a
future Infiniti flagships design di-

rection. The Q80 concept hints

at Infinitis upcoming V6 line, in
this case a hybrid-electric powertrain expected to deliver 550 hp.
An electric motor and lithium-ion
battery pack support the 450-hp,
3.0-liter twin-turbo V6. Infiniti
whispers the V6 is based on
future production V6s. Look for
the production Q80 in 2018.

This smaller sedan is slated to

be Jaguars best-selling car
ever. Why? A couple reasons.
One, its affordably priced
(around $38,000 to start).
Two, its made from aluminum.
Three, choices: The new XE
will be offered with both gas
and diesel engines in the U.S.
The XEs downright reason-

the sort of brand synergy we can

get behind. Just 500 are being
built, so act fast. Even if you
dont get one, be happy VW is
building it at all. Who knows?
Maybe the lightweight construction methods will spread to every
corner of Volkswagens automotive empire in the coming years.

AMG GT S

MORE FROM THE FLOOR

AMG GT S
Heres the second
car AMG has developed
in-house after the breathtaking SLS AMG. The
911-fighting GT S houses
a 503-hp 4.0-liter twinturbo V8 under its extended
hood (the standard GT,
coming later, makes do
with 456 hp). The Ss
sprint to 60 mph takes
3.7 seconds, 3.9 seconds
in the GT. Top speed
is 193 mph and 189
mph, respectively.
AUDI TT SPORTBACK
The TT Sportback is
a stretched TT Audi
says draws on the A7
and A5 Sportback for
inspiration. Compared
to the standard TT, the
Sportback is 11.4 inches

longer, 2.3 inches

wider and 1.1 inches
lower. A 2.0-liter turbo
four powers the concept,
delivering a stout 394 hp.
Audi sources say a go/
no-go decision hasnt
been made yet.

FIAT 500X
The cute 500X arrives here
in the first half of next year
along with its cousin, the
Jeep Renegade. The Fiat is
167 inches long, 70.8 inches wide and 63 inches tall
the same length as the
500L, though a bit wider.
The car comes in front
drive, Traction Plus frontwheel drive and all-wheel
drive. Engine choices for
front-drive models are a
110-hp, 1.6-liter four and a
140-hp, 1.4-liter turbo four.

All-wheel-drive models (and

probably American versions) will have a choice
of a 170-hp, 1.4-liter turbo
four and a 184-hp, 2.4-liter
Tigershark four. Five- and
six-speed manuals and sixand nine-speed automatic
transmissions are offered.
RENAULT ESPACE
Why include the Espace?
Because it gives hints
to what might be a
future Nissan minivan
or crossover. The Espace
is based on last years
Frankfurt concept, with
a brightly lit interior with
both five- and seven-seat
versions coming. Three
1.6-liter turbos developing
130 hp, 160 hp and 200
hp are coming. If it comes
here as a Nissan, we
bet the 200-hp engine
is underhood.

 Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said

he plans to step down in 2018 after

completing a five-year business plan
to expand Fiat and Chrysler. Who might
replace him? Rumored candidates
include construction equipment-maker
CNH Industrial CEO Richard Tobin,
Fiat European chief Alfredo Altavilla,
Jeep boss Mike Manley and Fiat Brazil
chief Cledorvino Belini.
Automotive News reports that
since taking over Fiat in June 2004,
Marchionne has tripled the Italian
automakers revenue and operating
profit, with a goal of boosting net
income fivefold to about $6.3 billion
in 2018.

MORE MIATA

 Additional details are trickling in

on the 2016 Mazda Miata. The companys 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder engine will power U.S. versions, with direct
injection and ultra-high compression
and no turbochargerproducing 155
hp and 154 lb-ft of torque. Its mated
to a six-speed manual.

NO ENTRY-LEVEL PORSCHE

 An entry-level Porsche roadster

has been on and off about 580,403,

958,904,859 times; now the company
says its off again (Flash, May 12).
Porsche Cars North America boss
Detlev von Platen told Automotive
News not to expect anything lower
than the Boxster. Porsche considered
a lighter, less expensive, Boxster-based
mid-engine roadster named 718.
Von Platen says if people want an
entry-level Porsche, they should look
at the companys pre-owned program.
He would not discuss two other
rumored upcoming models: a Ferrari
F12 fighter at the other end of the
spectrum and/or a four-door smaller
than the Panamera.

NHTSA QUANTIFIES
VEHICLE-TO-VEHICLE
SAFETY BENEFITS

IF YOURE LONGING FOR CAR-TOcar communications more advanced than

horns and hand gestures, your wish may soon
be granted. The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration released an advanced notice:
Wireless vehicle-to-vehicle technologies are
destined for legislation, giving automakers
a heads-up that theyd better start thinking

about baking the systems into their cars.

V2V systems let cars alert each other to
hazards like stopped cars or inclement conditions. NHTSA took an extra step, providing
some numbers to stress the systems importance: NHTSA data says V2V systems, implemented across the industry, could prevent
592,000 crashes and 1,083 deaths per year.
The wireless communication systems have
already been extensively tested and mostly
praised, meaning the only remaining step is
to actually start deploying them into new cars.
We could be only a few years away.

SELF-SPEEDING
be a hardcore gearhead to
love flying down a challenging road, and you certainly
dont have to be a hardened
criminal to exceed the speed
limit while pursuing that thrill.
With self-driving cars coming, weve wondered: Are
we all destined for a future
of law-abiding tedium?
The answerfor nowis no.
Google hints its cars will
be able to exceed speed
limits by up to 10 mph when
the occupants say so (woohoo!)enough to take the
edge off in even the most
conservative DoT jurisdictions. It might even be
enough to keep you from
being a moving chicane
on the 101.

 Audi is the first com-

pany to receive an autonomous driving permit

in California, as new
laws in the state governing the process have
gone into effect.
The company says
it has conducted thousands of miles of selfdriving-car research
already in Europe and
various U.S. states
where testing is currently permitted.
California is important
to Audi because the
state is also home to
the companys Electronics Research Lab.
Audi says its engineers
at the ERL are working
on a range of autonomous-driving issues,
including whether the
human or the car is (or
should be) handling the
driving functions. At
Pikes Peak, the company sent an autonomous
TTS up the hill, completing the 12.42-mile route
in 27 minutes. Thats a
far cry from Sbastien
Loebs 8 and change,
but Audis car does not
need a driver.
Mercedes, Toyota,
Ford and others are
also testing autonomous
cars. An IHS Automotive
study says that by 2025,
there could be as many
as 230,000 self-driving
cars hitting the roads
per year.

PLAY IT SAFE,
CHECK THE OIL

LET ME SAY THIS UP FRONT:

Ive been a writer for decades, man
and boy. The words have come mostly
500 at a time, but they add up. My career
output dwarfs that of, say, Ernest Hemingway or Stephen King. Uses some of
the same punctuation, too.
In all that time, Ive never done what
I think of as wife jokes.
You know the ones: denigrating comments about how the little woman
cant tell a spare tire from a can of brake
cleaner, nudge-nudge. I dont do those.
My wife is intelligent and capable, a novelist with three dozen books to her credit.
My daughter is the best athlete in the
family and an intuitive cook. I wont
say otherwise for a laugh.
And yet they are incapable of understanding check the oil.
Now, the novelist hasnt had to deal
with dipsticks in awhile. Early in our
marriage, with our college cars, checking
oil was practically all we did. But her
beloved Protege 5 is getting on now,
and she wont talk about replacing it.
No skin off me; many men would
appreciate a wife who begged to keep
her old beater. The other morning when
she started it, though, I heard the clatter
across the yard and over the noise of
the shower. She was down the road
before I got outside, but I texted, Stop
and check oil NOW.
Of course, she didnt see the text until
she got home (or wouldnt admit itIve
been a horses behind about cellphones

and driving, so even if shed read it she

might have kept quiet). As she walked
in, I stepped out with a paper towel.
Lets check your oil, I said, going
for non-accusatory.
What do you mean?
Dont mean anything. Just want
to check it.
She eyed me suspiciously.
The stick came up dry, not even a
drop on the tip. I would have kept quiet
and just added a gallon, but I dont keep
oil around anymore. I dont think Ive
bought any between changes since the
Clinton administration.
Its pretty low, I said carefully.
Dont drive until I get some.
Twenty years of equanimity vanished
in a blink.
You didnt tell me to check it,
she snapped.
My knee-jerk (unsaid) response was,
I shouldnt have to tell you to check it.
We covered that 20 years ago. We did
but I learned 20 years ago which dead
horses not to belabor.
Well, the cars getting old. You
should check it.
How often?
Im not going there again, either. As
often as necessary, in Wife- (and now
Daughter-) Speak translates to Never,
which is how often theyll remember.
Also, it invites How do I tell when its
necessary? to which the only possible
answer is, You check it. From there,
all avenues lead down.
Tell you what, I said. Youre
pretty busy. Ill check your oil. Its
the cowards way out, and Im just the
man to use it.

Looking at our 2015 car

be easy to conclude that
automakers have given up on
boring cars for the year. Alfa
Romeo will return to the U.S.
market (again) for 2015 with the
4C, a car that, despite the way it
sounds and drives, is not a reardrive Lancia Delta S4 with a
gorgeous sports-car body. Alfas
corporate cousins at Dodge have

707-hp, supercharged engines

that come in Charger or Challenger wrappers; theres a mindblowing Volkswagen GTI; and
you heard it here first, Fords got
a new Mustang. Its not just the
old guard, thougheven relative
newcomers like Hyundai and Kia
have V8, rear-drive luxury sedans
offering more than 400 hp. Weve
said it before, but its a great time
to be an enthusiast.

Replacing the
TSX and TL in the lineup,
the TLX is offered in three
trims: a front-wheel driver
with a 2.4-liter, 206-hp I4

sequential manual gearbox;
and front- and all-wheel-drive
versions powered by a 3.5liter, 290-hp V6 mated to a

Further improving performance
are features like Precision AllWheel Steer, agile handling

by an integrated dynamic system that offers four different
performance algorithms.

OUR OPINION: Acura needs to
make drastic changes lest it

Is the TLX the answer? Its a
good car, dynamically excellent,
but the short answer: No.

and thankfully the 2015 model

Based on an Alfa Romeo platform, the 200 receives a sleeker

handful of upgrades and a new
center console. Power comes
from a 3.6-liter V6 (295 hp, 262

S-CLASSICS
MERCEDES COUPES FOLLOW IN
THE GRAND-TOURING TRADITION
BY GRAHAM KOZAK

FOR AS LONG AS WEVE

dreamed of driving across
Italyand its been a fantasy for a while nowweve clung to
a few preconceptions: The roads
would be challenging. The vistas,
breathtaking. The car, long, loud
and Italian. Our co-pilot, charming.
It worked out a little differently
in reality. The cross-Tuscan route
we charted was suitably picturesque,
but our partner for the ridewhile
a perfectly nice guywasnt exactly
what wed consider our type.
And the car (well, make that
cars)? At first glance, the 2015
Mercedes-Benz S-class coupes

are about as far from vintage Italian

steel as you can get. But well try
anything once, and it didnt take
much to convince us to give the
new Benz two-doors a shot. With
undeniable style, comfort and performance, the cars incorporate all the
fundamentals that made the classics
endurewhile adding a helping of
Teutonic solidity.
The S550 coupe, which we sampled first, forms the base of Benzs
range-topping flagship lineup. At
about $120K, its not a bad place
to start, nor a bad place to sit;
from the drivers seat, your problems
(and the tri-star emblem at the cars
prow) seem very, very far away.
The proportions are timeless: long

2015 MercedesBenz S550 coupe

2015 MercedesBenz S63 AMG

hood, short deck, pillarless greenhouse in between.

Theres a 4.7-liter turbocharged
V8 up there, somewhere, but you can
barely hear it from a well-appointed
cabin that Benz says is the worlds
quietest (a very believable claim).
The cars seven gears are cycled
through almost imperceptibly.
Driving is suitably effortless. Its
relaxing, not invigorating.
Since all S550s headed for North
America get 4Matic all-wheel drive,
Benzs pothole-erasing Magic Body
Control system isnt available. But
fear notthe Airmatic suspension
delivers the floatiness craved by drivers who like to forget theres a road
beneath them.
Its certainly nice, but its luxurious cushiness is better suited to the
highways of Florida than the hill
country around Florence.
Enthusiast that you are, youll
be much happier to have the naughtier S63 AMG rounding out your
fleet. Not because of the appearance
enhancements, necessarily; you
cant see the well-vented front fascia,
tight tail end or AMG badges from
behind the wheel, though you can
rest assured the car remains understated, even with an eye-grabbing
matte-effect paint job and near$162,000 price tag.
Imagine 0-60 mph in a lag-free 3.9
seconds, all in a 4,400-pound rolling
statement with a leather-upholstered
cabin nicer than those of the person-

al jets in which we like to pretend

weve been. Yeah, you want the
5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 and every
one of its 577 horses and 664 lb-ft
of torque.
The AMG SpeedShift sevenspeed automatic, which trades in
its torque converter for a secondary
clutch, offers a fair amount of control to the driver in manual mode,
particularly on upshifts. Downshifts,
though, are not quite as precise as
they might have been with a true
dual-clutch setup.
That 4Matic system and its
33/67 percent front/rear torque
split, mandatory on all S63 AMGs
at launch, instills confidence and
encourages you jump on the
optional ceramic-composite
brakes later, attack corners harder,
get back on that throttle sooner.
The car will dutifully sort out
everything behind the scenes, making you feel like a better driver than
you probably are. But you wont coax
a raging bellow out of the motor no
matter how much fuel you feed it,
and a few snappy downshifts on the
DCT wont trigger much more than
a quick, sensible snare-drum bark
from the exhaust.
We did say the S63 AMG will
round out your fleet, not compete
for the spot in your garage youve
reserved for a true sports car. Even
with an engine from Affalterbach
and sport driving modes to fiddle
around with, the car remains a

CARS 2015 \\ DRIVES

luxury coupe first and a performance
coupe second.
As for the $231,825 S65 AMG:
We havent yet driven the outrageous rear-wheel-drive, 621-hp, 738lb-ft, twin-turbo V12 land yacht. If
its anything like its top-of-the-top
CL65 AMG coupe predecessor, we
suspect its a toss-up as to whether
its dozer-like torque, silky-smooth
power delivery and subtle visual differences are really worth the hefty
premium over its V8 sister-ship
which is 0.1 second faster to 60 mph,
by the way.
As value isnt necessarily a top
consideration of those shopping
in this ultra-exclusive corner of
the market, however, we suspect
Mercedes will have no trouble selling as many as it chooses to make.
If theres anything the S-class
coupe lineup lacks, it is drama
or perhaps more precisely, edginess.
In all of its incarnations, the twodoor is simply too comfortable, too
predictable, too carefully managed,
too refined for you to ever feel like
youre getting away with something
while behind the wheel, even while
exceeding the speed limit by a comfortable margin.

Yet the gran turismo concept

has always been more about elegant,
continent-crossing performance than
back-road antics. In that respect, the
S-class coupesand the S63 AMG,
in particularcarry the GT torch
with at least as much flair as its
Italian and British contemporaries.
Those now in the market for
a high-dollar luxury two-door have
a wealth of options; provided you
have the funds, you could just as
easily get in line for one of Ferraris
raucous offerings or have the folks
at Crewe build a Bentley Continental GT to your spec. Then there
are the Astons and Maseratis to
consider we might as well include
the beastly Rolls-Royce Wraith in
the conversation.
Its cutting-edge technological
suite, impressive performance and
coddling interior make the S-class
coupe, in any incarnation, a winner.
Whether making the obvious choice
offends your hipster sensibilities,
know that the new Benz two-doors
namely, the S63 AMG variantwill
serve you well on a ride down the
twisting, turning roads of your
dreams. As for the charming co-pilot,
youre on your own there. c

EIGHT IS ENOUGH
CHEVYS NEW AUTO VETTEWHILE NO MANUALHOLDS ITS OWN
BY JAKE LINGEMAN

CHEVROLETS NEW
8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission is ready
for duty in the 2015 Corvette
Stingray. The 6.2-liter V8/
eight-speed combo is good
for a 3.7-second 0-60 time,
29 mpg and faster shifts than
many dual-clutch transmissionsmost notably the
Porsche 911s.
We tested the 15 Vette
on General Motors famed
Milford Road Course and some
surrounding streets. Were not
going to say the new auto is
better than a manual transmission; it isnt. Theres still no
way it can match the involvement or control of rowing your
own. But we can say with authority that a dual-clutch isnt
the only way to go if you insist
on letting the car shift itself.
Chevy says it went with the
torque-converter automatic
over a dual-clutch for a couple
reasons: The DCTs on the
market wouldnt fit in the

space reserved for the 2014s

six-speed, and the auto works
better with the Corvettes
Active Fuel Management system to achieve the 29-highway-mpg EPA estimate.
The 8L90 weighs about
8 pounds less than the outgoing six-speed automatic,
thanks to extensive use of
magnesium and aluminum.
A taller top gear leads to
an 8 percent decrease in

engine rpm at 70 mph.

Out on the roller coaster
that is the Milford Road
Course, we threw the Vette
into track mode and left the
gear shift in D. It takes about
two turns and a hard-braking
event to get the trans to realize
youre on a racetrack, then it
switches into what well call
redline mode. At that point,
the transmission kicks into
the lowest gear possible. It can

drop down three when youre

on the brakes hard and hold
high rpm indefinitely if you
keep the throttle steady.
We caught the new transmission hunting only once in
about 12 laps on the difficult
course, and that could have
been our fault with sloppy
pedal work. It is a little unsettling seeing the shift lights
on the dash flashing, meaning
shift, while the transmission
just hangs in gear and the
exhaust wails at full rpm.
Once your driving has settled
down off-track, the eight-speed
automatically adjusts back
into street mode.
After driving three highpowered cars with eight-speed,
torque-converter automatics
(Challenger SRT Hellcat,
Jaguar F-Type R and now
this Vette), we can say the
newest models are every bit
as good as dual-clutches. They
can shift as fast, feel smoother
and arent rough on low-speed
launches like many performance-oriented DCTs.
No automatic offers the
connected driving experience
a true manual can, but they
get closer every year. Corvette
buyers who want an automatic
now can choose one of the
best units available. c

TESTIMONIAL
Place your ad in the
Marketplace Showcases
Just a note to say thank you. I appreciate all of your help in
placing automobile ads in Autoweek Marketplace. My ads have
been amazingly successful. Not only have I been able to sell all
the classic cars that you have listed for me, but I have had the
pleasure of dealing with some of the nicest people. My cars sold
in Las Vegas, Key West and two towns away from my home. One
even ended up in a world-class collection, thanks to Autoweek.
I have owned many classic cars over the years, and because of
your help, I have been able to enjoy a car for a period of time and
know that when the time came to move onto the next that there
was an easy and efcient way to market the automobile and
connect with fellow enthusiasts.

peculiar federal government maneuver,

after autoweek.com reported he would be

THE 225,000 HOURS

OF RANDY LANIER
IN AN UNEXPECTED AND UNCLEAR TWIST, ONE OF
RACINGS NOTORIOUS CHARACTERS IS A FREE MAN
BY JON SARACENO

RANDY LANIER, FORMER

sports-car driver and 1986
Indianapolis 500 Rookie of
the Year whose racing career scandalous-

ly careened into oblivion when he

was sentenced to life without parole
in 1988 for his role as an international
drug trafficking mastermind, was set to
shuffle out of prison.
Assisted by a fortuitous and seemingly

reunited with his family, she added on

Facebook. Until then, we are dealing
with the federal government and the justice system so anything can happen and
we do not want to celebrate until Randy
is actually a free man. But we are all
overjoyed to say the least
U.S. District Judge J. Phil Gilbert
granted the governments motion to
reduce Laniers sentence 25 days before
she posted that statement to Facebook
meaning Lanier knew of his pending
release last summer, or so he told some
friends. He has said he already has a
job waiting for him at a South Florida
classic-car museum.
Randy has a high-pitched voice
when hes happy, it goes even higher,
a friend who speaks to Lanier told
Autoweek. He was so happy [about his

release], it was really high.

The once-boyish South Floridian who
left racing in disgrace in the 1980s was
convicted on multiple charges for his role
as a ringleader in an international marijuana-smuggling ring. Lanier won the 84
IMSA GTP drivers championship, and
four-years later was sentenced to life in
prison without possibility of parole. With
the strong scent of pot and fast success,
Laniers life and career swerved off course.
He reflected the times: South
Florida in the 80s was a breeding
ground for some of road racings biggest
stars and rogues. Piloting swoopy exotic
prototype sports cars, some drivers
engaged simultaneously in fast-lane
lifestyles. Pundits called IMSA an
acronym for International Marijuana
Smuggling Association.
Laniers harsh 1988 sentence baffled
many in racing. Even though he was convicted under the Racketeer Influenced
and Corrupt Organization (RICO) Act,
many remain puzzled today why the
judge granted a motion to set him free.
The judge gave no reason in his twosentence decision.
Jim Porter, first assistant U.S.
Attorney for the Southern District of
Illinois, confirmed Laniers scheduled
Oct. 15 release from a high-security
prison in Coleman, Fla. There were
certain motions filed which were
under seal, said Porter. If the judge
has not made [the reasoning] clear, I
cannot tell you.
Lanier must spend his first six months
in a halfway house. The court imposed
other conditions: He cannot drink alcohol or patronize establishments selling it.
The court forbids him from possessing
weapons. He can be drug-tested once a
week for a year and must undergo drugand-alcohol treatment.
The question remains, why release
Lanier after he languished in prison
for so long? The wheels of justice
might have received the needed grease
in August, 2012, with co-defendant
Eugene A. Fischers unexpected and
unexplained release (Fischer, Lanier
and co-defendant Benjamin B. Kramer
each received life sentences).
Indeed, the governments motivation
has some legal experts concerned about
lack of transparency. Frank Tuerkheimer,
a former federal prosecutor, said the
government owes the public some sort
of explanation as to why someone under

Lanier qualified on row five for the 1986

Indianapolis 500 and finished 10th.

these circumstances is suddenly being

let out of jail. I am a little surprised that
the judge didnt insist on ityou give
some sort of logical reason; its odd,
said Tuerkheimer, a member of the
University of Wisconsin Law Faculty
and a former Assistant U.S. Attorney.
There are two little mysteries: A.) Why
are they doing it?; and B.) Why did the
judge go along with it? He did not have
to sign the order.

He probably
missed the best
years of his life
and thats a pretty
big price to pay.
IndyCar team owner

Forfeiture of assets appears to have

triggered the decision to release Fischer,
according to what Lanier confided to a
source. And like Fischer, Lanier also received government forfeiture notices,
possibly relating to a Los Angeles-area
card-club casino, but he ignored them,
the source said. Fischer didnt, though.
According to Lanier, Fischer passed the
notices to his attorney.
At some juncture, Randy found
out a co-defendant sued the feds over
forfeiture, said the source. So they
made a deal with [Fischer] to let him

out a couple of years ago. Randy tried

the same thing and was denied until he
got another attorney. Then they [agreed]
to let him out.
The forfeiture issue is murky, but
this is clear: The government long ago
entered forfeiture judgments against
Lanier and Kramer for $60 million each.
At 34, Lanier was found guilty of operating a continuing criminal enterprise,
conspiracy to distribute, and conspiracy
to defraud the IRS; his sentence excluded
the possibility of parole. At one point, he
became a fugitive. In 1996, he was given
two years solitary confinement at a federal penitentiary in Florence, Colo.
The FBI investigation in the Southern
District of Illinois led to Lanier and his
co-defendants being found guilty of distributing more than 1,000 pounds of
marijuana between 1982-86. An FBI
investigation revealed Laniers illegal
gain was an astonishing $68 million.
Much of the windfall was confiscated.
A source told Autoweek that Lanier
said he buried $2.5 million in PVC pipes
in his fathers barn. Federal authorities
grabbed another $5 million Lanier squirreled away in various accounts after an
ex-girlfriend ratted him out when she
heard Lanier say on a secret tape recording that he did not trust her, Lanier told
the source.
His personal losses, of course, are
immeasurable.
He probably missed the best years
of his life and thats a pretty big price to

INDYCAR

pay, IndyCar team owner Bobby

Rahal, a contemporary, told
Autoweek. Rahal won the 1986
Indy 500 when Lanier broke Michael
Andrettis rookie-speed qualifying
record, started on row five and finished 10th.
Seeming to rise from the vapor of
Floridas muggy air, Lanier in 1984
formed Blue Thunder Racing. The
team had no major corporate sponsor.
Eyebrows furrowed along pit road.
Nonetheless, Lanier teamed with
Dale, Bill and Don Whittingtonthe
latter two also pleaded guilty to a $73
million marijuana-smuggling operation (Breaking Bad, April 14)to win
the IMSA GTP title as they whipped
past Holbert Racings Porsche 962s
and the Group 44 Jaguar. (Ironically,
Laniers release comes the same week
as the Tudor United SportsCar
Championships year-end awards
ceremony in New York City.)
As it turned out, Laniers exotic
March 83G prototype sports car was
powered by more than petrol. The
drug-fueled operation precipitated his
swift decline. In a 2012 interview with
IndyCar Advocate, Lanier attributed
faulty thinking and having my priorities in the wrong place is one reason
for his podium-to-prison downfall.
Growing up in the 60s and being
around the marijuana culture could
have had some influence on me, he
said. Money was also a contributing
factor, along with the thrill of that
sort of lifestyle.
Accomplishments and achievements, he concluded with melancholy, are not what life is all about.
Now quite unexpectedly, Lanier
has regained the most precious trophy
in life.
In prison, Lanier began oil painting,
and took up yoga and tai chi. He
passed time playing chess and visiting
with his children. Until the cartilage
in his right hip deteriorated, he enjoyed running without pain.
Freedom restored and time served,
Lanier no longer needs to flee. If the
wiser, older man with the gray hair
has learned from his checkered past,
he has ample time in the future to
pursue the joys of independent selfdetermination while proving that
the government made the correct
decision. c

RAHAL

LANIERS PEERS
RESPOND
REACTION AMONG RANDY LANIERS
high-profile racing contemporaries, all
Indianapolis 500 winners, that he will be free
after 27 years of incarceration brings a similar refrain: He served his time.
And this: Randy Thomas Lanier wasnt
such a hotshot racer.
Bobby Rahal, winner of the 1986 Indy
500 when Lanier was named Rookie of the
Year, called him a weekend-warrior type;
one of the better amateurs.
I dont know if I would say he did anything spectacular, the 61-year-old IndyCar
team owner told Autoweek. He wasnt a
professional. If he had to rely on racing for a
living, it would have been a challenge.
Laniers life-without-parole sentence
prompted Rahal to observe, OK, he was
smuggling marijuana and got [busted].
But there were a lot of guys that did that
and got 10 years. He gets life and you go,
Holy smokes. I mean, murderers get less
than that.
Hall of Fame driver Mario Andretti, 74,
who competed against Lanier on the IMSA
and IndyCar circuits, said, Quite honestly,
he was not considered one of the top dogs
that, if you are going to win a race, you have
to deal with.
He didnt have the reputation that would
warrant big sponsors behind him, Andretti
told Autoweek. He was buying [rides] and
then you find out how he was buying.
Certainly, you have no pity for thathe
got what he deserved. But he certainly
paid his dues.
Lanier started 18 IndyCar races from
1985-86. He struggled in transitioning from
sports cars but improved. Starting 13th at
Indy he finished 10th, sandwiched between
Danny Sullivan (ninth) and Gary

ANDRETTI

Bettenhausen (11th). Lanier notched top-10

finishes in four of the last five IndyCar races
he completed (Milwaukee, Meadowlands,
Cleveland, Toronto).
After autoweek.com reported Laniers
Oct. 15 release, Arie Luyendyk posted on
Facebook, Wow Randy Lanier this is such
good news, it really made my day, once
youre out it will be time to celebrate WOW!
So happy for you.
Lanier has described Luyendyk, Emerson
Fittipaldi, A.J. Foyt, Johnny Rutherford and
Al Unser Jr. as friends. Foyt had no comment. The others could not be reached for
reaction to Laniers release, except for Little
Al, who exclaimed, Thats great!
I dont recall spending any real time
with Randy. He was in and out so fast,
said Unser, 52.
Lanier won the 1984 IMSA GTP drivers
championship as part of a South Florida
connection that funded its racing with drug
proceeds and fueled a scandal.
A breed unto itself in those days. Right
out of Miami Vice, said Rahal.
Said Johnny Rutherford, Randy came
along on the coattails of the Whittingtons
and sports-car racing. They amassed a fortune. They had airplanes and race cars.
Everyone stepped back in awe as they
came charging in. But they werent that
good at running high speeds on a speedway for three hours.
Drug running apparently was not their
forte, either.
U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration
slapped Lanier with multiple drug charges
in 1986. He became a fugitive.
It became like a soap opera, recalled
Rutherford, 76. [Federal authorities] kept
trying to find him. We were told he had
plastic surgery to change his looks and try
to get a new identity.
Lanier was arrested hiding out in the
Caribbean. He never raced again.

THE REST
WAS HISTORY
ON A SNOWY WINTERS NIGHT MORE THAN 60 YEARS
AGO, ONE MANS DRIVE FROM FRANCE TO ITALY
CHANGED EVERYTHING
BY DENISE MCCLUGGAGE

Editors note: Ferrari is celebrating 60 years of racing in the United States. Our acclaimed Denise McCluggage
knows a thing or two about the marques migration to America: She won the GT class at Sebring in 1961, and
she and saxophone player Allen Eager finished 10th overall driving her short-wheelbase Ferrari 250 GT. Here
she recalls how one man in particular led the Prancing Horse to glitterati and racers alike.

I SEE IT AS A MOVIE.
World War II has ended
and Luigi Chinetti is driving as fast as he dares through enclosing darkness and intermittent
snow. The going is slower than he
expected. It is Christmas Eveimportant in any movie. Maybe 1946,
according to legendimportant,

but not in my film. Luigi has

told Enzo Ferrari he must see
him. Ferrari will wait for him.
The Ferrari offices are on a side
street in Modena, several decades
from being converted to a parking
garage after Maranello becomes
headquarters.
In the reception office, the ceil-

ing is much higher than any of

the walls are wide. At its apex
glows a feeble bulb. The Commendatore, as he was usually called
then, waits in the dimness and
hugs himself against the cold.

the war, making machine tools

compounded race cars.

When Chinetti arrives, slapping
his gloved hands, talking fast,
he will tell Ferrari he must stop
making machine tools. The
Germans are better at it and
will put him out of business.
What will Ferrari do? He must
build cars. Fast cars from Italy
are what Americans will want.
Ferrari is a man of dark moods,
and he is deep in one now. Luigi
keeps talking about cars. Cars for
racing. Cars for the road. Ferrari
must build them. Enzo shakes his
head slowly. For anyone who ever
saw Ferrari in his darkness, the
weight of that memory alone will
sag their knees. Luigi is quick
about the room, talking, talking.
Time is slow in the cold. Then,
slowly, Ferrari seems to swim up
from a depth. He asks, Who will
buy them? Luigi stops.
Like a kid with a favorite story,
I often asked Luigi to tell me the
Christmas Eve saga. In it he uses a
favorite phrase of his: Can you
imagine? I liked its inflection.
Can you imagine? I wait for it.
Luigi tells me, I say to him, I will
buy 20, 25 cars. Can you imagine?
I have no money and I say I will
buy 25 cars. He stops there with
an oddly sweet Luigi smile.
Ferrari is moving faster. Starting
to talk. To plan. Yes, cars. Racing
cars, road cars. Luigi slides to
earth. I must get back to Paris.
And he heads back there in the late
night and the snow. Can you
imagine? I have to sell 20, 25 cars.
Chinettiwho will eventually
form Ferraris NART (North
American Racing Team)knows
people in America who will likely
buy these cars. Some will buy
them and race them and buy
more. Others will buy them because the first people bought them.
One possible buyer is Tommy Lee
of Los Angeles, usually described
as a radio executive but certifiably
a car nut. And sure enough at the
1948 Turin Auto Show, where
Carrozzeria Touring shows the
first 166 Barchetta, the little
boat sails off the display into
Lees ownership.
Briggs Cunningham, probably

the surest bet on Luigis buyers

list, is credited as the first
American to bring a Ferrari to
the U.S. for racing.
The car he bought was a 1948
Tipo 166 Spyder Corsa. It raced
several times in 1949, then Briggs
drove it to first overall in May
1950 at the Suffolk County
Airport. It went to the Miles
Collier collection in Naples, Fla.,
years later when the younger Miles
bought Cunninghams collection.
Sam Collier, Miles uncle, raced
the Spyder Corsa at Bridgehampton. Then he was killed in a crash
on the road course at Watkins
Glen in September 1950.
Another buyer Luigi counted
on was Jim Kimberly. Sure enough,
Gentleman Jim acquired a 166
Barchetta and in 1951 entered it in
the second-ever Palm Springs race
in California. William Edgar, who
writes as well about racing as anybody, was there to watch Jim become the first American to race a
Ferrari on the West Coast. Except
Jim wasnt there to be watched.
That it was April Fools Day had
nothing to do with it. Jim had an-

swered an urgent call to return to

Chicago, and Marshall Lewis, his
mechanic and sometime co-driver,
assumed the wheel. Marshall did
just fine, winning by two laps.
Luigi did more than sell that
Barchetta (s/n 0010M). Before
the car crossed the Atlantic, Luigi
raced it at Spa in one of his specialty 24-hour races. And (with Jean
Lucas) won. Indeed, Luigi also
raced the Spyder Corsa he sold
Briggs before it left Europe. This at
Montlhry. If youre going to sell
Ferraris to Americans, why not
build them a provenance first?
The histories written of Ferraris
racing in America sometime identify Luigi Chinetti as the American
distributor or simply the New
York dealer. Few credit him with
the importance he played in the
very existence of Ferrari the automobile manufacturer. Certainly,
Enzo Ferrari didnt. But then Enzo
was not by nature generous.
I asked Luigi once how he could
have tolerated such a spoiled, selfish character as Ferrari. Oh,
Luigi said with his private smile,
he was always interesting. c

CREDIT WHERE ITS DUE:

When the American Le Mans
Series and the Grand-Am series
formally merged at the start of this sportscar season, the resulting Tudor United
SportsCar Championship wisely maintained the ALMS start-big, end-big idea.
The ALMS traditionally started with
the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, and
ended with Petit Le Mans at Road
Atlanta. When Grand-Am absorbed
ALMS, it added the Rolex 24 at Daytona
to the beginning of the season, keeping
the idea a special race should start the
year and wrap it up. It works. Its hard to
name another series thats figured it out.
And the 2014 Petit Le Mans powered
by Mazdaa regulation 10 hours this
year, instead of the 10 hours or 1,000
miles, whichever comes first (10 hours
did)was a big, exciting race bracketed
by two troubling announcements.
At the next-to-last race, at the Circuit
of the Americas, the usually two-car
Extreme Speed P2 team announced it was
staying home. Team owners/drivers Ed
Brown, sponsor Tequila Patrns boss,

Winning time: Ricky and Jordan Taylor, along with co-driver Max Angelelli, below, scored the overall

and Scott Sharp took pains to say it wasnt personalthey just wanted to save
money before heading to China to run
with the World Endurance Championship. But theres no other way it take it:
Brown and Sharp were not happy with
the Tudor Championships Balance of
Performance regulations, convinced the
deck was stacked against their open-cockpit Hondas, mostly in favor of GrandAms traditional Daytona Prototypes.
And since Tequila Patrn was the

North American Endurance Cups title

sponsorawarding the best finishes in
the four longest racesBrowns absence
was particularly telling, especially since
both Grand-Ams Jim France and ALMS
Dr. Don Panoz credit Brown in large part
with bringing the two to the table.
Then, the Monday after Oct. 4s
Petit, even worse news: The Dodge
SRT Viper two-car factory GT-Le Mans
team is done, after taking its first season
team championship at Petit, as well as

Strong finish: Wolf Henzler, Bryan Sellers and

the drivers championship with Kuno

Wittmer. He learned he would be unemployed 15 minutes before the press release
went out. It was dj vu, all over again:
Dodges two-car Penske team won the
NASCAR Sprint Cup championship in
2012 with Brad Keselowski but didnt
show up in 2013 to defend it. As it is,
Chrysler remains in NHRA drag racing,
and thats it.
Otherwise, Petit 2014 was a solid race.
For the just-over-50-car field, the weather
was clear and cool after a wet week, so rain
wouldnt be a factor, as it was in so many
past Petits.
In the Prototype class, the results
werent surprising: The so-strong Action
Express No. 5 Chevrolet Corvette DP
came to Road Atlanta leading the points;
driver Christian Fittipaldi padded that
with a pole. He and co-driver Joo Barbosa
needed only to start the race for the team
championship and drive one stint each for
the drivers championship, as well as for
the NAEC championship and its extra
$100,000 prize. And they did, then set
off to try and win the race.
They came up 11 seconds short, as the
Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DPwith
brothers Jordan and Ricky Taylor, and Max
Angelelli (helping out in the long races)

was fast and flawless, with excellent race

strategy and pit work. The Taylor brothers
became the first American-born drivers to
win Petit outright and did it after their father and team owner, Wayne Taylor (from
South Africa), won the first Petit in 1998
when Jordan and Ricky were 7 and 9 years
old, respectively. The Ganassi Ford-Riley
driven by Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas and a
visiting Scott Dixon was third, a lap down.
In GT-Le Mans, the two-car SRT
Motorsports Dodge Viper GTS-R team
had two drivers tied for the championshipWittmer and season-long co-driver Jonathan Bomarito. In a smart but
mercenary move, they were split for Petit,
SRT correctly figuring theyd have two
chances to out-finish Antonio Garcia of
the Corvette C7.R two-car team, and
Wittmer did. But the race went for the
second surprise yearto the plucky Team
Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR of Wolf
Henzler, Bryan Sellers and Marco Holzer.
Sean Rayhalls scary crash 15 minutes
from the end in his leading Prototype
Challenge car caused a late-race caution
and bunched the field for the final few
green-flag laps. Henzler held off the second-place No. 912 Porsche North America
factory 911 RSR. Wittmers Viper, in winning the championship, was third.

8Star car out of the lead, it left the door
open for the Starworks No. 8 with Renger
van der Zande, Mirco Schultis and Alex
Popow, who was salvaging a season shortened by a broken arm.
As usual, the largest class was for the
GT-Daytona cars, with Paul Miller Racing
giving the Audi R8 LMS its first win of
the year. Drivers Bryce Miller, Matt Bell
and Christopher Haase drove a solid, unspectacular race, with Haase beating Jan
Heylen in the Dempsey Racing Porsche
911 GT America by just over three seconds. Turner Motorsports, the BMW
team, took the teams championship,
and Dane Cameron the drivers title.

HEAVY HIT, HEAVY HEARTS

JULES BIANCHIS DEVASTATING CRASH IN JAPAN BRINGS
BY ADAM COOPER
SAFETY TALK BACK TO THE FOREFRONT

JULES BIANCHIS CRASH IN

the Japanese Grand Prixthe
most serious to hit Formula
One since the tragic 1994 season that
witnessed the deaths of Ayrton Senna
and Roland Ratzenbergersent shockwaves through the sport.
For all the safety improvements the
FIA has introduced the past 20 years,
with focus both on the cars and the circuits, Bianchis Oct. 5 crash into a crane
was a reminder racing is still dangerous.
Of course, its not easy to legislate for flying wheels or other debris, or the possibility of cars taking off and striking solid
objects such as posts supporting catch
fencing. But what made Suzuka so frustrating for most observers was that collision between a competing car and a recovery vehicleon the scene to extract
Adrian Sutils crashed Sauber from
Dunlop cornerseemed so unnecessary.
Inevitably, the FIA is under scrutiny
for not using a safety car to control the
field after Sutil went off and the tractor

crane was dispatched. Rain was falling,

light was fading and the Sauber was on
the outside of a notoriously tricky, highspeed corner.
Race director Charlie Whiting is
adamant race control followed protocol,
given the stricken car was well off the
circuit and that the marshals were protected by double waved yellows meaning
slow down and be prepared to stop.
Despite the double yellows, Bianchis
Marussia car got sideways and he overcorrected and speared straight off the
road at high speed. As harsh as it seems
given the consequences for the 25-yearold Frenchman, the consensus is he was
going too fast for circumstances. Had he
not veered right and hit the tractors rear,
he might have struck the marshals tending to the Sauber and wed be considering
a very different scenario.
With the teams and drivers full support, the FIAs key immediate response
was to focus on the issue of drivers
speeding through yellows. Inevitably, no-

body wants to lose time to rivals, and

judging just how much to back off has always been a problem. The FIA wants to
address that, in effect having a mandatory speed limit through yellow flag zones.
There are some things to learn, said
Whiting. And we want to engage with
all the teams and drivers to make sure
that we come up with sound and wellthought-through ideas. One of the most
important things that we learned here is
its probably better to take the decision
to slow down away from the drivers.
I think its better to try and put in
place a system where its much clearer to
everybody how much we think cars
should slow down under similar circumstances. It probably wont be a speed
limit as such, but there will be a way of
controlling the speed with complete certainty and complete clarity.
The most likely scenario is a virtual
safety car using the time-delta system
imposed in a full-course yellows first
two laps. A time delta would be imposed
for the yellow zone, and every driver
would have to slow the same amount. It
seems obvious now, as is often the case
after crashes trigger urgent response.
Bianchi has paid a heavy price; we can
but hope the result is a safer sport. c

Up in smoke? Rosberg blew

the race at the start, and
trails Hamilton by 17 points.

STRETCHING
THE GAP
HAMILTON WINS AS F1
MAKES LONG-ANTICIPATED
DEBUT IN RUSSIA

AFTER TRYING FOR MORE

than 30 years and after various
false starts in other potential
venues, Formula One boss Bernie
Ecclestone finally achieved his dream:
Grand Prix racing in Russia. In so doing,
he opened the doors to a huge market for
the sportand by a timing quirk did so
just as the countrys young F1 hero
Daniil Kvyat is headed next year to a
high-profile seat at Red Bull Racing.
Even Ecclestone could not have predicted that move when he set the wheels
in motion for the Sochi Autodroms
creation some years ago. Equally, he
could not have foreseen the political
situation engulfing the race during recent
months. Back in February, it was deemed
acceptable for the 2014 Winter Olympics
to go ahead on the same Sochi site, but
since then events have moved on in
Ukraine, and the July 17 shooting down
of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 raised

the stakes considerably.

Inevitably, in recent weeks F1s
upcoming Russian trip came under
media scrutiny, and team bosses referred
any difficult questions to Ecclestone
and the FIA. In time-honored fashion,
Ecclestone insisted F1 doesnt get involved in politics.
In the case of Russia, that was open
to question since President Vladimir
Putin was personally behind the events
creation. Putin wasnt on the grid, but
Russias deputy prime minister was,
and in an unprecedented move, drivers
were required to line up for the national
anthem (and subsequently to show support for Jules Bianchi).
When Putin arrived on site after the
race was half over, cameras showed
Ecclestone greeting him, Putin taking
his place in a VIP stand and enjoying
the action. Inevitably, he was on the
podium presenting Lewis Hamilton the
trophyHamiltons driver suit of course
carried Petronas logos, Malaysias state
petroleum company.
You could argue if U.S. President
Barack Obama showed up in Austin,
Texas, for the race, Bernies cameras
would follow him closely as well.
Nevertheless, one wondered what the

LAT PHOTOGRAPHIC (2)

world at large thought. If any of F1s key

players felt uncomfortable watching
events unfold, they did their best to hide
it in public, sticking to the message that
sport does not get involved in politics.
As an event, the inaugural Russian GP
proved to be a great success. Ecclestone
and Putins plan to use the otherwise
now-superfluous Olympic site was inspired and made us wish other cities had
done the same; indeed, Ecclestone did at

one time consider the 2012 London

venue as a possible circuit site.
Compromised by available space,
track designer Hermann Tilke did his
best with a layout snaking between
buildings used for figure skating, hockey
and curling. Echoing Valencia, Korea
and Abu Dhabi, it was a semi-street
track, and on TV it was hard to tell one
concrete-lined section from another.
But it was good live viewing, and the
drivers found the low-grip surface and
layout more challenging than expected.
It was not easy to hone car setup or complete a perfect lap.
Alas, the race itself fell a bit flat.
Nico Rosberg locked up his tires and
ruined them on the first lap and dropped
to the back with an instant pit stop for
new rubber. Hamilton, therefore, was
left to win as he pleased, and there was
little action down the field. Pirellis
compound choice proved too conservative, and on the smooth new surface
there was no degradation. The bulletproof tires combined with unexpectedly
high fuel consumption (forcing many
drivers to ease off) and a lack of incidents
or safety-car interventions to ensure
there was very little action. In fairness
to Tilke, the supporting GP2 and GP3
Series races were more eventful.
Nevertheless, a healthy crowd
turned up, everything ran on schedule,
the good weather and an unexpectedly
appealing venue, sandwiched between
mountains and the sea, pleasantly surprised F1 folk. Plans are in hand to make
it a night race. The Russian GP is definitely here to stay.

CRAIGSLIST AD OF THE WEEK: FOCUS V8, HOT ROD, KUGEL

CONVERSION, SHOW CAR, 302 CRATE MOTOR - $15500
SOCIETY NOTES: COMEBACK-WHEN-YOU-LOSETHE-OTHER-ONE EDITION

2000 Ford Focus V8 Conversion

Great example of a "no expense spared"
Focus V8 conversion for a fraction of
the original investment. Ford Crate Motor,
5 Liter GT-40 340 HP M6007-XB3.
All top of the line parts. Car built by Tee's
custom in Florida in 2003. It was their 8th
conversion and a plaque from Tees is included. Google "Focus V8 Tees." Excellent
Show Car. Little tuning should get you in
the high 12's if you want a drag racer. Real
Sleeper, until you hear it. Attention getter

wherever it goes. I have invested $34000

($5200 in original car and $22300 in
parts, $6500 initial conversion labor). I am
moving on to another project, low reserve.
Original car had 90K light highway miles. It
was a 2000 purchased in the fall of 2002.
The body and interior are all stock and in
excellent condition. All original paint no
dings no scratches, not even a hint of rust
anywhere. A couple easy years on the road
in Florida and has been in a garage year
round since conversion. Never raced.

The BBC reports that Ireland resident Lisa

Schofieldborn with only one armwas
denied a disability parking permit, despite
the fact she was forced to retire from her
bank job due to her impairment and that
she has limited mobility in her existing arm.
Schofield, who finds it difficult to carry
even remotely heavy objects, noted, If
you have only one arm, apparently youre
not disabled enough.
