Who is it?

This is a great game to review all the questions youve done so far and Who is it?
1. One student comes to the front, closes their eyes and faces the board.

2. The teacher asks an English question and points to one of the other students in
the class.
3. This student has to answer but . they have to disguise their voice!
4. Everyone asks Who is it? and the person at the front has to guess who gave
the answer!
5. If they get it right they get a point, can stay at the board and repeat the game
from step 2.
6. If they get it wrong they are out and someone new comes to the front!
The trick is to keep the rhythm going and have the kids answer quickly, and just
watch the tension rise as the points go up!

What am I
drawing?
2

You can either use this game as a vocab review or to introduce todays new vocab.

1. The teacher very slowly starts drawing part of a picture on the board.
2. The kids shout out what they think it is, in English of course.
3. The first kid to shout out the correct answer gets to come to the front and draw
the next one!
Very simple, but a fun way to get the kids guessing instead of waiting till
everything is perfect!

Wallball

This game is particularly strong for sports fans!

1. Put a waste paper basket in front of the board.
2.

2. Put the kids in two lines, like in the Lines Game.

3. Ask the front kid from each group a question using the English youve learnt so
far.

4. The fastest one to answer gets to throw the ball into the basket.
5. But . they have to bounce it off the board (or wall) first!
6. One point if they get it in.
7. Repeat from step 3 with the next two kids.
This is a great game because it balances out the kids who are good at sports with
the kids who are good at English.
And remember The Agreement, win or lose, *everyone* is *always* supportive
of everyone else. (You can always deduct points for bad sportsmanship! )
Also make sure you choose a sensible ball, you know that some of the crazier
classes are going to need something soft and spongy!

Turn & Circle!

1. Put several (at least 3 of each) copies of todays minicards all over the board.
2. Two kids come to the front, facing the class.
3. Everyone in the class shouts out todays question e.g. What sports do you play?
4. The teacher chooses one student who answers with one of the answers on the
board.
5. The two kids at the front quickly spin around, face the board and circle all the
minicards that have this answer!
6. Total up how many each team got, bring two new kids to the front and repeat
from step 3.
Obviously the more cards, the more fun, and an odd number of each card always
adds to the competitiveness!

Total Physical
Phonics
5

1. Put several grapheme (letters e.g. s,a,t,i etc. or letter groups e.g. igh, oa, ee etc.)
flashcards that you have studied so far on the table. Ninja Tip: I actually use
the phonics posters, they have the key words on there so it really helps!
2. Put the kids in groups of 3 or 4.
3. The teacher says a word they want
the kids to sound out.
4. The first group rushes to the pile of
flashcards, picks up one or two
flashcards each and holds them up to
make the word!
5. One point if they get it right.
Bonus Ninja Tip: Write small numbers of each flashcard (just like scrabble!) and
total up the points for each word!
Be careful in step 3 that you only use words they can do e.g. dont use the sh or
ch phonemes if youve only taught c and h separately so far.
Ninja Tip: If youre unsure, just use the words in the reading section of
todays phonics poster, the kids can do all of those!
P.S. If you are unsure about phonics, do check out the Phonics Crash Course

Tic Tac Toe

Grammar
6

This time we jump up a bit to do some funky grammar practice.

First lets illustrate it with Can . then we can level it up a bit!
1. On the board draw a 3 x3 gird with I, You, He/She on the side, + ? on the
top. Then put several different verb (e.g. here or here or here or play or
speak) flashcards that you want to review in each space e.g.

2. The first team gets to make a sentence using the structures on the board e.g. if
they say You cant drink they get to put a cross in the middle square! ( A very
sensible first move )
Ninja Tip: Teach the Its not good song to teach the not or cant forms!
3. Then the next team gets to make a sentence and put a circle there e.g. if they say
Can she sing? they get to put a circle on the bottom right square!
4. First team to make Tic-Tac-Toe e.g. three crosses or three circles in a row wins!
You get the idea?
Now, just as we learnt from War Games, Tic Tac Toe always ends in a draw.
So .. now we do it with a 5 x 5 grid!

GenkiEnglish.com Midos Book of Games vol.2

Genki English Top 50 Games eBook

wwww.GenkiEnglish.com

And to make it tougher we can add in nouns ( or just about any theme from the
curriculum!)

So this time, if youve done for example the Do you have any pets? theme, they
have to also think about the verb to use e.g. She has a banana. etc.
If you want to be even tougher, add in things like What do you want to be? and the
kids have to come up with things like Does he want to be a rockstar? or How are
you? and the kids have to say things like She isnt cold
Ninja Tip: If a grammar piece that you havent covered yet crops up, e.g. You
dont want to be an artist you get the kids to take their best guess and then, right
here and now, teach the extra parts they need. This is the *very* best possible
time to teach new grammar because the kids have a real need for it, *right now*,
to win the game and this motivation is all it takes!
Pretty cool, eh?
Whats even cooler is that if you combine many themes that youve done before,
the kids will naturally start combining themes to say things like He doesnt want
to be a watermelon! etc. which is also very cool and very funny when it
happens!
There are also digital versions of this game in the Teachers Set for the Winter &
Summer sports lessons.

Throw in the
cards!
7

Here is Midos latest game to review whatever you are studying this week!
1. Split a pack of playing cards into the four suits, spades, clubs, hearts &
diamonds.
2. Put a basket at the front of the class.
3. Put the kids in four groups, name each one after each suit.
4. Give each kid in each group 2 or 3 cards from their suit.
(Ninja Tip: For large classes use 2 or even 3 packs of cards)
4. Ask the kids the question you are studying today e.g. just ask When is your
birthday? for a straight question theme, or point to a flashcard and get the kids to
say the phrase/question e.g. May I borrow your ..? for the other themes.

5. The fastest kid to answer gets to try and throw one of their cards into the basket.
6. Repeat from step 4 until everyones cards have gone.
7. Total up how many of each suit are in the basket to find the winner!
Ninja Tip: Because we know the bad kids sit at the back, try giving the good
kids a reward by making everyone throw their card sat down in their seat!
The really good thing about this game is that everyone has a go, so although the
genki kids will answer first, the shy kids will all get to have a turn too. Plus the
kids who are maybe weaker at English get a chance to win with the randomness of
flying cards!
And remember The Agreement everyone always supports everyone else, win or
lose!

Teacher Says

A very simple game this week, and it works great in making the kids laugh and
getting them on their toes!

1. The teacher says one of the todays words/phrases as a command e.g. Im a

., I can throw or I like giraffes and at the same time does the gesture for a
*different* word/phrase from todays lesson!
2. If the kids repeat or do what the teacher *says* they are out and sit down!
3. But if they do the gesture of and then say out loud what the teacher is
*gesturing* they win and get to keep stood up for the next round!
Ninja Tip: If you have a theme with a question and several answers e.g.What do
you do? or Whats your favourite subject? get the kids to shout out this question
before each round.
Ninja Tip 2: Although younger kids will always want to win and continue to the
next round, if you happen to be teaching zombified students in junior high
school do it the other way round, where they only get to sit down if they win (i.e.
say what the teacher does, not what they say) but must stay stood up if they just
repeat what the teacher says!
Simple, but very cool.

Step in it!

Disclaimer! Please dont do this game in nice classes, its a way to try and win
round *that* particular class, youll know the one we mean when you read the
game! 8)
1. Draw a steamy mound of poo poo in the middle of board. (Now you know
which class you need to use this game with!)
2. Draw 10 steps from it on either side.

3. Put the kids into two groups, each group has a cut out character at one side of
the board.
4. Ask the kids a review question.
5. If they get the question right, they get to move their opponents team one step
closer to the poo poo!
6. Or they can move their own character one step away from the poo poo if its
getting a bit smelly!
7. First team to land in the poo poo is the loser!
Now you just know at least one class where they are going to love this, and hey, I
guess if it gets them into learning English when they otherwise wouldnt its
always worth a try!!!

Lightning
Jump
10

1. Put the kids into 2 groups.

2. Give each group a set (or sets for larger groups) of minicards from todays
lesson, they divide them up between themselves with at least one card each.
3. Everyone in the class shouts out todays question. The teacher says sorry? so
they have to say it louder!
4. The teacher does a dramatic
pause
and
then
.
chooses one
answer
from
todays lesson (put the words
2 from the software on the
board to remind you what they
are) and shouts it out.
5. The kids who have this card
have to jump up, lighting fast,
hold up their card and repeat
what the teacher said!
6. Fastest kid gets a point for
their team!
Keep the pace nice and fast and
this turns into a fantastic game!

Hot seat!

11

1. Put two chairs at the front of class.

2. Split the class into two groups.

3. One person from each group comes to the front and sits on a chair.
4. The teacher has a pile of flashcards, they show the top card to the rest of the
class, but so the kids in the chairs cant see.
5. Everyone has to keep quiet when the teacher shows the class the card!
6. Then everyone shouts out todays question e.g. Whats your favourite flavour?
7. The teacher then spins around and shows the flashcard to the students in the
chairs.
8. The first student to jump and and shout out the
answer on the card correctly gets a point for their
team!
9. Repeat from step 3.
The fun part is here is the keeping quiet in step 5,
almost every time someone will shout out the
word! So you just move to the next flashcard!
If you dont have much control over your class,
have each kid answer 2 or 3 questions so not too
much time is lost changing the kids who are sat
down.
(And of course spend more time on
the Warm Up next time so they do what you say
really quickly!

Blowball

This might be a fun game for the end of term but only if you have a very clean
classroom.
1. Put the kids in two groups.
2. One group lines up on one side of the class, the other lines up on the other side.
3. Each team has a dedicated blower and a ping pong ball on the start line at the
front of the class.

4 . Put a finish line at the back of the class.

5. Ask the whole class a question.
6. The fastest person to answer tells their blower to blow once on their ping
pong ball to make it move nearer the goal!
7. Repeat from step 5
8. First team to cross the finish line is the winner.
As a bonus you could even try this in the gym.
Ninja Tip: If anyone accidentally touches one of the ping pong balls, their ball
goes back to the start!

Circle of Doom

This is a great way of picking a volunteer, in a similar way to London Bridge, but
of course Circle of Doooooom (said in a deep cinematic way!) sounds way
cooler!
1. Put the kids in a big
circle.
2. Under one of the kids
put a Circle of Doom
i.e. a hula hoop or draw a
circle with chalk.
3. Whilst singing todays
song ( e.g. Do you have
any brothers or sisters?,
school subjects etc. ) the
kids walk round stepping
in and out of the circle of
doom.
4. At some point you stop
the music.

5. Whoever is in the circle

of doom is the volunteer to
ask/answer a question,
come up with a whole
series of questions about
todays English or whatever
task you want them to do!

Flash the
flashcards
14

Some of the games we have are quite elaborate (Try the Spiderman or Star
Wars games!)
But sometimes just the simple things can make all the difference. Especially part
way through a long set of material or if the class needs a quick boost!
1. Teach todays lesson as usual. (Make sure it is one with flashcards)

2. After finishing the song, shuffle the flashcards and hold them behind your back
so the students cant see them.
3. Get the kids to ask todays question.
4. And then move the card out horizontally and flash the
picture in front of you (do it fast so the students cant
clearly see what is on it)
5. You can divide the class into three teams.
6. The first student to shout the phrase from the card
correctly gets a point for their team.
7. Do the same again.
8. The team with more points wins.

Bunny
Hopping
15

You can use this game for any topic you happen to be teaching e.g. Days of the
Week, Do you have any pets? etc.

1. Put some flashcards in a row in the middle of the floor.

2. Call 2 students to stand on either side of the row.

3. Students shout out todays question. You say sorry? a few times to get them to
say it louder, then finally you shout out one answer.
4. The kids have to hop along until they stand next to it and shout it out!
5. Start slowly and gradually make it faster.
Or for a bigger version (for a big review or party perhaps?) spread the flashcards
all over the classroom and the kids have to hop to them!
Its fun, my kids love it.

Phonics
Hopper
16

Last time we had Bunny Hopping for phrases/vocab, and heres another, this time
for spelling/phonics.
1. Place laminated posters/cards with all the graphemes (letters or groups of letters)
youve taught on the floor e.g.

2. The teacher shouts out a word that the kids know the graphemes for.
3. The kids hop to each grapheme to spell out the word!
(Note: Make sure you only put down graphemes that youve taught in class so far!)
Its a great physical variety to add to the phonics/spelling lessons on the second
video on the phonics page.
For the flashcards just use the phonics posters. It saves you having to print out
another set of cards and youd have to laminate them anyway! (Plus having the
pictures also helps with the cow/snow pronunciation trickery!)

P.S. You can also do a desktop version of this by setting your printer to print
several posters one one sheet of paper and cutting them out as mini cards!
P.P.S. You can use the words at the end of the phonics worksheets to make sure
theres no embarrassment if you say a word the kids cant do yet!

17

This is another really simple no-prep game that works a treat . And it works
especially well with the new Food Updates!
1. Write up todays structure on the board e.g. Id like some
2. The first kid says the structure plus one item e.g. Id like some cheese, please.
3. The next kid adds something else to the list e.g. I like some cheese and rice,
please.
4. Keep going round the class at least twice so everyone has to remember
everything!
Can they get round the whole class twice without forgetting anything?
You can of course use it for other themes, such as
Where do you live? I live near the . and the . ,
Where are you from? Im from . and . and .
How are you? Im . and Im . and Im .
Im a superhero. I can . and and .
etc. etc.
Or you can go for the regular version with the new food cards!

Blowers
19

For some simple numbers practice, all you need are some bubbles!
Stand in front of the class where all the students can see you.
Blow bubbles and the students count with you.

Then blow bubbles and challenge the studnents to pop as many as you say before
they dissolve. (You can choose one or two students at a time for this and encourage
the rest of class to keep score)
You can also ask the students to blow or pop a specific number of bubbles or also
you can practice superlatives, who can blow the biggest, smallest, longest bubble?
