COME PREPARED FOR THE LAB.

Please inform us if you have a class at 17:15
(17:00) Important for some experiments
Pick up the Laboratory Manual from the Unit
Operation Lab during 28/07/14 to 1/08/14
Each experiment (11 of them)
Objective
Theory (study manual, textbooks)
Prepare the line diagram of the setup (visit the lab
or have a look at the experiment at the end of the
lab).
Identify the variables to be measured and their
ranges

Lab. in-charge:
Downstairs - R.K.Yadav & Vijay and

Upstairs - D. Ubale & Shailendra

What you should do before coming to the lab

1. Read the manual and write the objective in your
own words (limit to under 3 sentences)
2. Read the safety measures (general and experiment
specific)
3. Prepare an MS EXCEL sheet to record experimental
data
(a) List the parameters that are constant for all the
experimental runs at the top of the table.
(b) Insert the columns to compute all the
intermediate

values,

which

have

theoretical

significance. (As you enter the data in the cell, it

immediately computes and updates the cells of
intermediate columns)
(c) Plot graphs (The graph can be updated as you fill
in the cells)

What you should do in the lab:

Come properly attired to the Lab
Start on the experiment as soon as possible after
taking permission from TA
1.

Carefully go over the experimental set up.

2.

Make a sketch of experimental set up. (You may

visit the lab at a suitable time before hand)

3.

List all instruments, pumps etc. in the set up (do it

preferable in the turn)

4.

List the steps in running the experiment and discuss

with your TA and get approval to start the experiment.

5.

As you record the data, if possible, enter them in

EXCEL in the lab. A hard copy of the data collected
needs to be authenticated by the TA.

6.

Examine the trend of the intermediate and the final

values and note the deviation from standard values.

7.

Repeat the run if you have reasons to believe there

is something wrong with the run or there is time

8.

Compare with the theoretical or correlations

available in the literature.

9.

Submit a hand written report of the previous turn.

2. Objectives: Be specific
Avoid use of vague words like study, performance and characteristics.
3. Relevant theory
4. Experimental Set up
(a) Give a line diagram. Identify the instrumentation. If some of them are not
accessible, ask TA or refer to the equipment manual.
(b) Describe the procedure referring to the line diagram. Write the way you
did; use past tense.
5. Results and Discussion
(a) Describe how you have computed relevant variables from the observations
(refer to the observation table).
(b) Present your results in tables and show the trends of variables as plots.
Each of these must be numbered and provided with captions at the top for the
tables and at the bottom for Figures. Captions describe what is given in the
respective table/figure. Follow the style given in any textbook. Refer to the
tables and plots (Figures) in the discussion.
(c) Discuss the trends of the results and contrast them with the expected or
relevant literature values. If necessary indicate the cited references.

6. Conclusions: Be brief. Write the conclusions that were arrived at on

conducting the experiments
7. References: If you have referred to the books other than the lab manual.
8. Appendix:
(a) Data sheet duly signed by the respective TA
(b) Sample calculations
(c) Comments, if any
Use SI units. It should look like a printed report.
