Course Objectives:

Study of conventional strength of materials by integrating the basic concepts of elasticity


and plasticity.

To develop analytical skills of engineering application related to elasticity and Plasticity

To impart knowledge of continuum elasticity and plasticity theory

Definition of Tensor, Summation Index, Analysis of Stress and Strain, Principle
Stresses & Strains, Stress & Strain Invariants, Deviatoric Stress & Strain, Plane
stress and Plane Strain, Equilibrium Equations in Cartesian and Polar Co-ordinate,
Compatibility and Constitutive Equation in Cartesian and Polar Co-ordinate, Equation
of Equilibrium of a Deformed Body in Curvilinear Co-ordinate
Unit II
Equation of Elasticity for Solid : Stress Function in Term of Harmonic Function,
Stress Function in Term of Harmonic and Complex Function, Airy's Stress Function,
Prandtle's Stress Function, Principle of Superposition, Principle of Virtual Work
Unit III
Applications of Elasticity of Solid : Plane Stress and Plane Stain Problems, Axissymmetric Formulation and Deformation of Solid of Revolution, Rotating Disc and
Stress in Circular Disc, Torsion of Thin Tube, Bending of Circular, Elliptical and
Rectangular Cross-section Bars, Uniformly and Continuous Loaded Beams, Bending of
Cantilevers
