hen President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf was inaugurated

in January 2006 she made the issue of rape and
sex crimes against women a major goal of her
administration, pledging to tackle the scourge of rape,
armed by a new legislation which came into force the day after her
inauguration in January 2006.
Until Sirleafs ascendancy to the presidency, only four cases resulted
in convictions and a survey of six counties by the Association of
Female Lawyers of Liberia (AFELL) in 2005 found that almost 75%
of female respondents had been raped during the Civil War. AFELL
which helped draft the new rape legislation stressed at the time that
political commitment and awareness training would be crucial to
successfully bringing those engaging in sex crimes to book.
Rape is a non-bailable offence under the new law. But a
FrontPageAfrica investigation has found that in the past few months,
a number of high-profile cases involving foreign nationals have
slipped under the radar, ironically, under the watch of a female judge
at the Criminal Court E, Judge Cianeh Clinton-Johnson.
The list includes: JAAFAR BASHIR, 44, a Lebanese national charged
for his alleged involvement in the raping of young Liberian children
within the age range of 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 15; ALI SAKSOUK,
21, another Lebanese national who was also accused of rape but
granted his freedom by the controversial judge. Saksouk was accused
of raping a 13-year-old girl after her father filed a complaint that he
found Saksouk and the girl in a 4-Runner Jeep, according to police
charge sheet. ANTHONY KASSABLI, 44, and his father, EDMUND
DIB KASSABLI, 81, two Lebanese nationals convicted of Human
Trafficking are currently out on bail after Judge Johnson granted
bail. The father, Edmund Dib, has reportedly left the country while
his son, Anthony remains out on bail in Monrovia; DAVID WAINE,
a Canadian national and Country Director of Equip-Liberia, was
languishing at the Monrovia Central Prison, since his arrest on
November 13, 2013 until he mysteriously won bail and is now back
in Canada.
Except for the Saksouk case, the figures in the other three cases cited
medical reasons in their plea for bail.
On Tuesday, the issue took a familiar turn and had it not been for
the Supreme Court, Bashir, whose sickening videotaping of underage
girls drew ire from feminists groups and angry women, would have
walked out of the Monrovia Central Prison.
JAAFAR BASHIR & THE SEX TAPES
In a shocking move, the controversial judge granted Bashir, a US$25K
bail, citing several legal citations as provided by the law.
Solicitor General Betty Lamin immediately objected and prompted
Supreme Court Chamber Judge, Associate Justice Phillip A.Z. Banks
to file a writ of prohibition and ordered a stay of the release, keeping
Bashir behind bars.
A source familiar with the case told FrontPageAfrica this week that
Bashirs lawyers put forward an insanity defense which the judge
favored.
Dr. Benjamin Harris had previously determined that there was
nothing wrong with Bashir and found him fit to stand trial. However,
Bashirs lawyers reportedly objected claiming that the report was bias
because the government paid for the report. Judge Johnson sided with
the defense even though the state is required to provide and pay for
medical for inmates under the states supervision.
Judge Johnson reportedly put Dr. Baileys report aside and ruled that
the defendant bring in his own psychiatrist. Bashir, according to court
records provided a one-sheet paper from Lebanon unsupported by
credentials of a Dr. Mansour claiming that he was insane.
The state reportedly argued that Bashir had been sound because he
operated a successful business in Liberia prior to the charges against
him. It was only after his indictment that he claimed to be crazy,
said a source familiar with the case Wednesday.
Bashir, according to sources had sought to use the ongoing Ebola
epidemic to evade justice.
Like the other three cases, many legal observers are baffled over how
Judge Johnson reached her decision Tuesday.
In her ruling, Judge Johnson argued that considering that the defendant
is accused of raping scores of children, the court must ensure that the
defendant does not pose any flight risks or danger to the community
as well as to any other child, this court must ensure that it protects
the public against any further criminal act of the defendant and
have assurance from the defendant that the judicial process will be
respected."
Nevertheless she was on the verge of allowing Bashir to walk.
The judges decision draws contrast to AFELLs fears when the law
was first drafted.
For example, the old rape law allowed suspects to be out of jail and
back on the streets and in a position to intimidate anyone who might
give evidence against him.
Writing in the FMreview.org in 2005, Cllr. Lois Bruthus, then
President of AFELL; now Ambassador to South Africa, wrote:
AFELL championed the bill which gave rise to the promulgation
of the new rape law on 17 January 2006 immediately after the
inauguration of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as President. The new rape law
widens the definition of rape to cover penetration with any foreign
object, not just the penis, and also raises the age of a child to 18
in harmony with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Those
under the age of 18 are now automatically deemed not to have given
consent. The law also covers gang rape and stipulates a penalty of
life imprisonment for the rape of women, girls and boys. The issue
of marital rape was raised during this campaign but defeated by the
majority male-dominated legislature.
Even more troubling for Judge Johnsons ruling, legal observers say,
is the weak manner in which she ruled in favor of Bashir considering
the extremities of the case and the magnitude of the alleged crimes,
all of which were captured on video by the defendant.
The judge suggested that because a doctor was out of the country, it is
granting Bashir a six-month bail.
She wrote: Considering that Dr. Bailey has delayed his presence in
Liberia due to public health concerns and because this court does not

Rodney D. Sieh, rodney.sieh@frontpageafricaonline.com

know long this delay will be, this court says that this bail is for six
months at which time the following must take place. The defendant
must have access to his private physician, Dr. Mansour to continue his
treatment in accordance with his medical report. The defendant shall
surrender his passport and not leave Liberia and to report to court
once every week until this issue is finally determined and Dr. Bailey
must perform the psychiatric examination in Liberia, witnessed by the
private physician of this defendant.
ALI SAKSOUK & 13-YEAR-OLD
The similarities in all of the cases are striking with the involvement of
the same judge Johnson and defense lawyer Cyrennius Cephas.
In the case of Saksouk, the Lebanese national was freed even though
the state had not entered a plea of Nolle Prosequoi on his behalf.
According to the police charge sheet, the defendant who is the owner
of the Kings and Queen Supermarket on Benson Street and Sinkor
Old Road, was spotted by his victims father, Tarnue Kesselly, who
alleged that Saksouk was in a 4-Runner jeep with his 13-year-old
daughter.
The victim reportedly told police that she met the defendant in 2013
at the Kings and Queens Supermarket on the Old Road.
The victim told the police that during that time the defendant
befriended her and both of them exchanged phone numbers. She
also told criminal investigators that since then, they had been
communicating on Facebook.
Following her explanation, the police said they established that
the defendant allegedly had sexual intercourse with the victim and
medical report from the James Davies Memorial Hospital revealed
old healed laceration on her private part.
FATHER & SON HUMAN TRAFFICKERS OUT ON BAIL
Judge Johnson also played a key role in the nicodemus-like release
from the Monrovia Central Prison of Anthony Kassabli, 44, and his
father, Edmund Dib Kassabli, 81, two Lebanese nationals convicted
of Human Trafficking.
The Kassablis were recently released on bail. The father, Edmund
Dib, has reportedly left the country while his son remains out on bail
in Monrovia. The case was in appeal process at the high court.
Government sources recently confirmed to FrontPageAfrica that it
still intends to ensure that convicted Lebanese Anthony Kassabli,
44, convicted of Human Trafficking and rape, does not evade justice
eventhough his father, Edmun Dib was on Oct. 2, 2014, pardoned by
President Sirleaf on medical ground, over claims that he was suffering
from Alzhiemers.
A copy of the Declaration signed by President Sirleaf and obtained by
FrontPageAfrica states that Edmond Dib Kassabli made an application
for pardon accompanied by certain professional determinations
about his psychiatric and mental fitness to pursue the appeal and carry
out the sentenced.
The President granted the senior Kassabli pardon, declaring that the
Republic of Liberia had abandoned further prosecution of the Appeal
with respect to the said Co-Respondent but says that it will proceed
with the prosecution of Co-Respondent.
The Bill of Information also in possession of FrontPageAfrica reads:
That the informant the republic of Liberia is appellee in an appeal
action pending before this Honorable Court in which Dib Edmon
Kassabli and Anthony Kassabli Respondent herein appealed their
conviction for the commissionof the crimes of Gang Rape and
Human Trafficking. The co-respondent Dib Edmond Kassabli applied
to the Presidetn of Liberia, Her Excellency Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf
for pardon stating health and other reasons. That the president of
Liberia has granted pardon to Co-Respondent, Dib Edmond Kassabli
in keeping with Article 59 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic
of Liberia. Article 59 provides that The President may remit any
public forfeiture and penalties, suspend any fines and sentences, grant
reprieves and pardons and restore civil rights after conviction for all
public offense, except impeachment.
Human trafficking is a bailable offense but rape is not in Liberia. The
older Kassabli was reportedly only convicted on the human trafficking
charge which is bailable.
FrontPageAfrica has also learned that prosecutors are pressing ahead
for an overturn of the bail granted the younger Kassabli by the lower

court, Criminal Court E, at the high court.

Many are now wondering how key figures in a high-profile trafficking
case which has drawn the attention of the world managed to walk out
of the notorious and well-guarded Monrovia Central Prison without
the knowledge of the presidency or the Judicial branch of government.
Anthony Kassabli was arrested in July 2013 along with his father and
later indicted by the government of Liberia on four counts of gang
rape, illicit human trafficking, and possession and sale of a physical
object for lethal use.
The government alleged that the defendants, along with one Madam
Habba Kou Kawar, recruited and transported five Moroccan women
into Liberia to use them as sex workers. It further stated that the
defendants operated a Bar and Restaurant on Center Street, where
they used the Moroccans as sex workers in violation of the law.
The indictment states that the defendants took away the girls passports
and other travel documents and failed to pay them as promised. That
the seven (7) victims traveling documents were seized from them by
defendant Anthony Kassabli, upon their arrival in Liberia on separate
dates and time(March to July) 2013) respectively subjecting them to
immense restraint," states the charge sheet.
The pair was convicted by a jury on December 31, 2013 of all the
charges, including illicit trafficking of human beings, migrant
smuggling, felonious restraint, gang rape, and illegal possession
of a firearm. But in the space of one month, the Criminal Court E,
trumpeting a new judge, a female, Ceaineh Clinton Johnson, accepted
the Lebanese mens request for a New Trial filed on their behalf by
their lawyers on January 7, 2014. That process was in the works when
Judge Johnson dismissed concerns by prosecutors to release the pair
on bail.
CANADIAN PROFESSES INNOCENCE, FREED
For the Canadian, Waine, who repeatedly professed his innocence,
amid accusations that he raped and impregnated a 13-year-old girl, he
is now out of the Monrovia Central Prison.
According to the indictment in possession of FrontPageAfrica, Waine,
between the period 2011 and 2013, knowingly, criminally, wickedly
and intentionally had sexual intercourse with minor(Name Withheld).
The indictment states that the suspect began having intercourse with
the alleged victim, now 15, since she was 13 years of age whenever
the victims aunt and uncle were not in the compound. In the event
when either of them was in the compound, defendant would take
victim at some isolated area within the compound and have sex with
her.
Prior to his release, Waines lawyers were pressing for DNA to prove
his innocence. The DNA result will be a turning point in establishing
whether the girl who was allegedly rape was having sex long before
the alleged rape ever took place and if it is established that the third,
second person suspected is the father of the child, then there was
never a rape at all, meaning the girl was already having sex with
her boyfriend, his lawyer, Cyrennius Cephas told FrontPageAfrica
recently.
The case took a decisive turn in May when Waines lawyers filed a
motion that the writ of arrest and alleged testimonies of witnesses
before the Grand Jury as well as indictment stated that the defendant
impregnated the victim during the sexual abuse. The lawyers argued
that the arrest and imprisonment of their client was based on these
key allegations of the victims father. If there had been no pregnancy,
there would never have been a case or Action for Statutory Rape in the
indictment, the defense lawyers stressed in their motion requesting
a DNA.
Many legal observers fear that the series of questionable handling of
cases involving serious sex offences and trafficking could cast a dark
on Liberias already-fragile judicial system.
Liberia has in recent years become a major hub for human trafficking
with the U.S. State Department recently declaring that the government
does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination
of trafficking. Sex crimes in particular has been a major problem in
the past few years, the most notable, the case of Olivia Zinnah, a
7-year-old who was raped but later died in December 2012 after
years of pain and surgeries was adequately document in the criticallyacclaimed documentary entitled Small, Small Thing.

COMPLACENCY: A REVIEW OF SIRLEAF'S ADMINISTRATION

THE NEW
LIBERIA EBOLA
TRAGEDY

AT THE legislative building, the seat of those who make

and debate laws for Liberia last weekend, the sanitizing
drum introduced at the height of the deadly Ebola outbreak,
to guard against the virus was empty.
VISITORS WALKED by the drum without washing their
hands and no one was there to check for temperatures. The
scenes have been similar in some places around the country.
JUST DAYS after the World Health Organization (WHO)
and the medical group, Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF)
announced a decline in the number of cases in Montserrado
County, many areas in Liberia appear to be taking on a lax
approach.
THE GOVERNMENT and President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf
is flirting with a new message: Zero infections by Christmas,
a feat truly possible if Liberians get a grip of what they have
been through the last few months and begin to take stock of
where they hope to reach.
WHILE IT IS TRUE that the worst-hit Ebola nation is
enjoying a few days without significant cases and a lot of
empty beds at Ebola Treatment Units across the country, it is
also true that in the last few days, a great deal of new cases
is prompting cause to put a halt to premature celebrations.
THE SAD REALITY IS that the epidemic which has
infected more than 13,000 people and killed nearly 5,000
people is far from out of our reach.
REPORTS COMING out of Grand Cape Mount and
Rivercess Counties, previously boasting of low or no
cases, are now reporting signs of emergence of Ebola. In
recent days, at least 10 persons have died from the virus in
Rivercess while 20 persons in Gozohn Town (District #1,
Rivercess County) are under quarantine and 81 are under
surveillance. It is unclear whether all the 20 people have
been tested and are confirmed Ebola patients, according to a
FrontPageAfrica correspondent in the area.
IN THE POPO BEACH, New Kru Town community, latest
data obtained by FrontPageAfrica suggest a resurging trend
which threatens to rock Montserrado County.
FPA HAS LEARNED that a team comprising the Active
case finders, contact tracers, WHO and Community groups
recently visited the Popo beach area where some say could
be the new epicenter of a new Ebola outbreak.
CONTACT TRACERS told FrontPageAfrica that there are
four clusters of Ebola cases with associated high fatality
and each of these four clusters had an independent index
case.
THE POPO BEACH and Rivercess outbreaks follow ugly
reports coming out of Jene-wonde Town in Grand Cape
Mount where several people have died of Ebola and others
currently under quarantine.
RESIDENTS OF THE town of over 300 people watch daily
as bodies are taken away by the burial team with fear of
who is the next victim.
AS JAMES JALLAH Paul a resident of the town put it, if
care is not taken, the town could be wiped off the face of
the earth by the deadly Ebola virus. We are begging the
government to come to our rescue. If the government does
not come to our rescue, we will finish (die) here; this place
will be an empty space, said Jallah.
WITH THESE INCREASING cases of the deadly virus in
several locations, it is yet too soon to begin pondering that
the war against Ebola is over and people should start going
about their normal lifestyles.

Hassan Fadiga, kinghassan2nd4u@yahoo.com

aving followed Madam Sirleafs presidency for

almost a decade, it has become apparent that she
is an economy dictator. Unlike a noble leader,
whose actions are intended to advance national
interest by managing resources responsibly in order for
nearly all citizens to benefit; an economy dictator cunningly
protects cronies and rewards loyal followers. In the case of
President Sirleaf, she placed emphasis on building networks of
loyalty and enticing proposal to compensate for weakness of
democratic enforcement mechanisms.
An economy dictator creates loyalty the same way companies
do, by paying efficiency wages or wages in excess of a persons
opportunity cost. The salary disparity and alleged huge payout
of individuals critical of the Unity Party (UP)-led government
is indicative of President Sirleafs intention to reward loyal
supporters with extra benefits.
The current administration has shown gross ineptitude in
the initial handling of the Ebola crisis, and corruptions in
government; nonetheless, influential political parties, including
vocal critics of the government are speaking less on these
issues. Such an unusual trend can be attributed to political
economy of dictatorship... A strategy of rewarding or paying
off individuals for their silence on significant issues.
In his book The Political Economy of Dictatorship, the
author, Ronald Wintrobe, articulated how dictators stay in
power and how political authoritarianism and economic
performance interact. According to Wintrobe, loyalty systems
allow the dictators supporters to enrich themselves sat the
expense not only of the ruled but perhaps of the ruler as well.
Evidently, this has been the doctrine employed by Madam
Sirleaf, and she had managed to maintain absolute control
over the state of affairs of Liberia with limited resistance from
opposition political parties.
Although Liberia might not be experiencing the ruthlessness
of prior tyrannical regimes, the idea of aggressive persuasion
through monetary inducements, and job offers undermine
democratic tenets. The latest revelation that Mr. Ali Sylia
cancelled his senator bid due to medical reasons is not
only questionable, but it also denotes a pattern of economy
dictatorship. It is an open secret that the lack of support from
the ruling Unity Party (UP) was the driving force behind Mr.
Sylia's withdrawal from the senate race. More importantly, it
is alleged that President Sirleaf's personal appeal to Mr. Sylia
played a crucial role in his decision to abandon his senatorial
ambition.
Like Mr. Sylia, there are many individuals who have been

entangled into the web of Sirleaf's economy dictatorship policy.

The likes of Mr. Eugene Nagbe, Dr. James Kollie, and Amb.
George Weah, who were staunchly opposed to Madam Sirleaf
leadership, had been indoctrinated into Sirleafs network
of enticement through gainful employment. Mr. Nagbe was
rewarded with numerous ministerial positions including
minister of Youth and Sport for his loyalty; while Dr. Kollie
was awarded position as deputy minister for revenue. The head
of the largest opposition political party in Liberia, Congress
for Democratic Change (CDC) Amb. George Weah, also fell
prey to the president's political policy of economy dictatorship.
Mr. Weah was offered a position as" Peace Ambassador"... A
position he accepted, making it somewhat impossible for him
to criticize her failed administration.
Some folks continue to benefit from President Sirleaf's loyalty
rewards scheme; while there are other individuals like Alomiza
Ennos, and Darius Dillon among others have lost favor
with Madam Sirleaf. After her re-election, Madam Sirleaf
compensated Miss Ennos, a former law maker, with a position
as Chairman of the board of Directors for the National Transit
Authority (NTA). Honorable Ennos had retained the position
for three years before she was subsequently replaced. Mr.
Darius Dillon, on the other hand, was afforded the privilege to
go with the president on her numerous routine official travels
abroad. There was also an allegation that Mr. Dillon was
awarded a scholarship but he dismissed the claims.
The approach of using others to foster one's political agenda
when it is expedient, and abandoning them when they are
not of importance is morally wrong and inhumane. In the
shortest inaugural address recorded in history, President
George Washington stated " government is not reason, it is not
eloquence...It is a force! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant
and a fearful master; not for a moment should it be left to
irresponsible action." It is incumbent upon every patriotic
Liberian to stand up against the irresponsible actions by
President Sirleaf and other elected officials.
At this crucial time in our country's history, Liberians must
demand the Sirleaf led government to create a plan of action
that would alleviate hunger and extreme poverty in Liberia.
Majority of the citizens of Liberia are currently living in a
hopeless state due to high unemployment and the Ebola crisis;
while others are living lavishly. Liberians must speak in unison
against economy dictatorship and weak leadership. With our
hearts united, we can effect the fundamental change required
for a prosperous Liberia.

IN SEVERAL CORNERS around Monrovia, people have

started celebrating and living the post Ebola way of life,
converging on beaches and at other locations, something that
was done during the heat days of the outbreak.
COMMUNITIES HAVE STARTED playing soccer games
with people gathering in large numbers at one location for
celebrations.
HANDSHAKES ARE NOW been exchanged and people who
are not wearing long sleeves are seen knocking elbows with
others to exchange greetings.
IT IS JUST TOO much too soon to start celebrating victory
when dozens of cases of Ebola are still being reported in
counties around the country and even Monrovia.
GOOD TO REMEMBER that only a single case of the virus
crossed over from neighboring Guinea and escalated to an
alarming proportion, taking the country to a momentary

standstill. Whats more about more than 30 cases within the

confines of Liberia, that should be seen as an increment in
the spread of the virus rather than premature celebrations
resulting to complacency.
LIBERIANS SHOULD TAKE the Ebola outbreak as a new
beginning and further increase the level of care judging
from the history of the current outbreak where a single case
travelled from Guinea via Foya in Lofa County onward to the
entire country.
ITS TOO EARLY to celebrate; the war against Ebola is not
yet won- Liberians must standup and continue taking the
necessary preventive measures to avoid another major round
of catastrophe.
COMPLACENCY IN THE fight against Ebola will cause
more harm than good.

An absolute affirmation, not only recognized by Liberians, but by
global media houses. For me a Liberian journalist in America, I
have always told my listeners that FPA is, no doubt the number one

We admire your courage, but then Rodney Sieh, it is perhaps in your

a letter to the president on Wednesday with Reps. Keith

Ellison (D-MN), Karen Bass (D-CA) and Barbara Lee
(CA) calling for the administration to authorize trained
and protected U.S. military personnel to provide direct care to
Ebola patients in West Africa, to resist calls for a travel ban air
on passengers from West Africa, and to dedicate additional U.S.
military airlift capacity for aid workers. Sen. Martin Heinrich

signed the letter.

The text of the letter is below

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500
Dear Mr. President:
We write to urge you to expand the U.S.
governments response to the Ebola
epidemic by authorizing U.S. military
medical personnel to provide direct care
to patients in West Africa, ensuring that an
outright travel ban on individuals traveling
from West Africa is not put in place, and
dedicating U.S. military airlift capacity for
American aid workers to travel safely to and
from the region. The safety of the American
people and our uniformed personnel is of
great concern, and this must be accounted
for and addressed in every aspect of the U.S.
governments Ebola response effort.
While we welcome recent reports that new
infections may finally be on the decline
in Liberia, the Ebola epidemic in West
Africa remains a global public health
and humanitarian crisis that threatens the
national security of the United States.
Public health experts agree that the single
best way to protect against the further spread
of Ebola into other countries, including the
United States, is to stop it at the source
in West Africa, and we cannot become
complacent in confronting it. We support
your Administrations commitments toward
that end, including funding requests and
the Executive Order you issued on October
16. We also appreciate and respect the
institution of enhanced screening measures
for individuals who are entering the United
States from West Africa. This crisis is larger
in scope and scale than initially anticipated,
and we believe targeted response efforts
will help curb the outbreak.
As of the date of this letter, 1,800 troops
are currently in West Africa assisting with

Ebola response efforts, with more expected

to be deployed in the coming weeks. These
troops include engineers, logisticians, and
health professionals all specifically trained
for crisis conditions. The commitment
of up to 4,000 military personnel under
Operation United Assistance to assist with
constructing Ebola Treatment Units (ETUs)
and the logistical response in the region
are essential contributions. While this
commitment will provide for the training of
medical personnel to staff ETUs in the long
term, we have heard from those working
on the ground in West Africa that there is
uncertainty about who will staff and manage
the ETUs in the immediate future, and
whether the level of experience of newlytrained personnel under these high-risk
conditions is commensurate with the critical
nature of the task at hand.
U.S. military medical personnel are trained
in highly-infectious disease response and
are experienced in following strict protocols
with an established chain of command,
which is essential when operating in a
high-risk, high-stress environment. That is
precisely the expertise and experience that
is now needed urgently in West Africa.
United States Public Health Service
personnel are already set to provide direct
care to infected health workers. Given the
appropriate protocols that address the crucial
health and safety of our service-members,
allowing military medical personnel to
provide direct care to patients will help
ensure the containment of this outbreak both
in West Africa, and within our borders.
Even with these military medical personnel
contributions, thousands of additional
highly-trained aid workers will be needed.
Aside from Liberian health workers,
American missionaries and aid workers
have borne an overwhelming burden in
responding to the Ebola outbreak during the
first six months. Should a travel ban be put
in place, these selfless Americans may not be
able to re-enter their own country. Further,

We urge you to coordinate with our

international
and
non-governmental
organization (NGO) partners on the
ground in West Africa in order to establish
a predictable, reliable protocol to ensure
airlifts for American aid workers and
military personnel, as well as more carriers
that can safely transport aid workers and
military personnel to the United States.
The circumstances in the hardest-hit
nations in West Africa are desperate. The
virus continues to threaten a region that
already struggles with a weak health
care infrastructure, poverty, and some of
the lowest literacy and highest maternal
mortality rates in the world. We agree with
your assertion that the key to ending this
crisis and ensuring the safety and security
of the United States is to provide a robust
response in West Africa.
Maximizing medical support for aid
workers and military personnel already
on the ground through U.S. military airlift
capacity, preventing a travel ban on flights
to and from West Africa, and allowing U.S.
military medical personnel to provide direct
care to patients are crucial steps to isolating
and stopping the Ebola virus.
We thank you for your efforts in the face
of this global crisis and look forward to
working with your Administration to bring
about an end to this deadly epidemic.

Monrovia resh off his first round

victory in the 2005
presidential
race,
football legend George
Manneh Weah took his eye off
the ball. The end result was
a losing second round to the
woman who is now president,
Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf
This time around, in his quest
for a seat in the Senate for
Liberias most populous county,
Montserrado, Weah is expressing
confidence while keeping a 20-20
hindsight vision on experience
from 2005.
Weah obtained a plurality
of votes in the first round of
voting on 11 October, 2005
garnering 28.3% of the vote.
This qualified him to compete in
a run-off election against Sirleaf,
the second placed candidate.
However, he lost the run-off
to Sirleaf on 8 November,
garnering only 40.6% to 59.4%
for Sirleaf. Weah alleged that the
election had been rigged through
voter intimidation and ballot
tampering, and many of his
supporters protested the results
in the streets of Monrovia.
However,
after
assurances
that the vote was fair several
prominent African leaders called
on Weah's supporters to accept
the result with grace and dignity,
and Sirleaf became President.
Claims of electoral foul play
from Weah and his supporters
were diluted when the African
Union characterized the elections
as "peaceful, transparent, and
fair".
In 2005, Weah's lack of
education became a campaign
issue with arguments that he
was not fit to govern; he backed
his limited education at the time
when he declared "With all their
education and experience, they
have governed this nation for
hundreds of years. They have
never done anything for the
nation."
From 2005 to now, Weah who
initially claimed to have a BA
degree in Sports Management
from Parkwood University
in London, an unaccredited
diploma mill which awards
certificates without requiring
study has improved his academic
credentials by pursing a degree
in business administration at
DeVry University in Miami.
With an eye on the Montserrado
County senatorial seat and a
possible 2017 presidential run,
Weah and supporters now believe
that he is academically upright
to lead and his opponents will
not be able to use education as
campaign tool this time around,
after the CDC political leader
has now acquired both Bachelor
and a Master Degree from the
United States of America.
In further preparation for the
tough senatorial seat, Weah said
on Wednesday he had quit his job
as peace ambassador of Liberia.
Considered the single most
popular figure amongst the
young population in Liberia at
the moment, Weah's job was
principally to facilitate the peace
process following 14 years of
ruinous civil war which ended in
2003 after the deaths of at least
250,000 people.
Since accepting the job from the
President who defeated him in
two elections, Weah only known
achievement was organizing
a soccer match involving top
African soccer greats including
from Nigerian star Austin J.Jay
Okocha, Cameroon Legend
Patrick Mboma and an array of

CONFIDENT WEAH DENIES HE TRIED TO SELL HIS CANDIDACY TO

PRESIDENTS SIRLEAFS SON, HIS OPPONENT IN SENATE RACE

RULING OUT COMPLACENY

I ran against the most powerful woman in Africa as stated by many of you in the media, and the first female
president, and she could not beat me in Montserrado County. So, I dont think those who are running against
me will beat me. George Manneh Weah, Senatorial Candidate, Montserrado County

other current and former African

soccer stars.
While Weahs opponents might
say he did not do much in
reuniting Liberians, his fanatics
will contend that his role has
been complicated by an Ebola
epidemic which has devastated
Liberia's public services and
health infrastructure, killing
5,000 people in West Africa in
11 months with more than half of
that number coming only from
Liberia.
Before the release of the
final listing of candidates for
the senatorial election, the
possibility of Weah contesting
raised huge debates in Liberia
with two obstacles believed to
be standing in the way of Weahs
quest to contest.
For some, Weah contesting the
senatorial election as a candidate
is an indication that his political
career is sliding down the
political pedestal-falling from
Presidential candidate in 2005
to Vice Presidential in 2011 and
senatorial in 2014.
Oppositions to Weah believe
his political downturn signifies
that he is an inconsistent
politician who goes out looking
for anything to grab rather than
standing a firm ground on what
he hopes to achieve.
Prince Y. Johnson another
senatorial candidate for the

second most popular countyNimba took a dip at Weah few

months ago, while endorsing one
of Weahs opponents, Christopher
Neyor. Johnson described Weah
as an inconsistent man due to
his shift from up to down on the
political front.
Again, the emergence of Robert
Sirleaf, son of President Sirleaf
and former head of the lucrative
National Oil Company of Liberia
who seems to have cash to splash
in his quest to seek political
office heightened speculations
that Weah was willing to tradeoff
his desire to contest the senatorial
seat in exchange for money.
In what appeared a sign of some
truth to the speculations, Weah
kept his cool, failing to make
political comments in relations
to the senatorial election until
one senior official of his party;
Mulbah Morlu declared that
Weah would be a candidate
for the senate declaring that no
amount of money could prevent
Weah from contesting.
Stated Morlu Weah cannot be
bought with money, he is above
the purchase, George Weah is a
property of the Liberian people,
and you cannot buy that kind of
man. Ambassador Weah wants
me to tell you that the only
thing that can stop him from
running is death and God will
be gracious to us to let him live

to serve as Senator and to be

President to serve two terms.
So that information is false, it is
misleading, it is unfounded, it is
gibberish, it has no iota of truth.
The news of attempts by Sirleaf
to convince Weah to relinquish
his senatorial ambition escalated
to the extent of creating further
confusion in the CDC with
executives of the party accusing
then Party Chairman George
Solo of meeting Sirleaf and
negotiating a sellout deal.
Weah has said neither he nor his
CDC party extort money from
people for leadership of the
party. He used the example of
Ambassador Winston Tubman,
who in 2011 came from outside
to become the CDCs presidential
candidate.
No one ever tried to bribe me
or told me they want to give
me money to leave a race, and
Winston Tubman can attest to
that. When Winston Tubman
became the leader of the party,
it was [a] party decision. He did
not give me a dime, Weah said.
He said it was the decision of
CDC strategists in 2011 that
Tubman should become the
standard bearer of the party, and
not Charles Brumskine of the
Liberty Party.
But the continuous confusion in
the CDC regarding the Robert
Sirleaf sellout rumors had led to
the removal of party Chairman

Solo and has sparked series of inhouse fighting within the CDC
even as the senatorial election
draws nearer.
In his party defense, Weah says
the internal wrangling in the
CDC is not unique to the party.
In every political party, theres
internal wrangling. Even the
Unity Party (President Sirleafs
party). We have more than two,
three different groups in Unity
Party. But, Im not going to
give relevance to those false
allegations, Weah said.
With Weah declared qualified to
contest by the National Elections
Commission of Liberia, the
soccer legend was now caught
in the corner of obeying a
Presidential mandate which
provides for all individuals
serving in government and
desirous of contesting the
senatorial election to resign their
positions.
Several individuals including
Superintendents
J.
Milton
Teahjay of Sinoe County, Daniel
G. Johnson of River Gee County
and Wellington Geevon Smith
of Rivercess County as well as
Mr. Conmany Wesseh, Minister
of State Without Portfolio and
Mr. Ranney Jackson, Deputy
Minister
for
Operations,
Ministry of Internal Affairs. Mr.
Alhaji Kromah, Ambassadorat-Large have all resigned their
positions, cutting corners on

Weah but on Tuesday he sent a

clear message of his intention to
contest by tendering his letter of
resignation from the position of
Peace Ambassador.
The
Executive
Mansion,
President Ellen Johnson Sirleafs
office late Tuesday announced
that she had received Weahs
resignation.
"I am running for senior senator
of Montserrado and that is my
target now," Weah told the AFP.
He was appointed in December
2012 after Nobel laureate
Leymon Gborwee resigned
the post, accusing Sirleaf of
nepotism.
As Weah is now set for the
senatorial election, he says he
is now focused on the senate
and not what happens beyond
including the 2017 elections.
"For the presidential it is the
party that will decide during
the convention in 2017," he told
AFP.
The senatorial election is less
than 40 days away and Weahs
opponents including Robert
Sirleaf,
Benjamin
Sanvee,
Christopher Neyor are all
campaigning vigorous and have
been doing so quietly under the
guise of helping to fight Ebola
for at least the past two months
even in the wake of Ebola but
Weah has been residing outside
the country.
Upon return to the country at
the weekend, Weah was busy
fighting to get his party Youth
league Chairman Jefferson
Koijee released from detention
after Koijee spent more than
three days in prison due to the
ongoing confusion over the
removal of Solo which led to the
flogging of one partisan of the
CDC.
While his contenders are
campaigning Weah is busy
fighting through words of words
with Deputy Police Director for
Operations Abraham Kromah
whom he (Weah) has branded a
rebel.
Many believe that Weah is
overconfident
of
winning
the senatorial election and is
leaving less room for engaging
the voting populace something
observers believe might cost him
dearly at the pools.
But Weah says he believes
none of the other candidates
are capable of defeating come
Election Day.
I ran against the most powerful
woman in Africa as stated by
many of you in the media,
and the first female president,
and she could not beat me in
Montserrado County. So, I dont
think those who are running
against me will beat me Weah
said.
Pundits believe that the political
variables of 2005 and 2011
might not be the same in 2014
as Weah needs to take on the
electoral process with some
level of seriousness rather than
relying on numbers of years past.
Be that as it may, Weah is still
popular amongst the urban
youths mainly in Monrovia but
in politics, the unlikely in the
real world is possible.

GANGING AGAINST SIRLEAF

C
Monrovia-

redible sources from

Capitol Hill have told
FrontPageAfrica that
14 of the 17 Members
of the Montserrado County
Legislative Caucus in the House
of Representatives, wouldon
Thursday endorse the candidacy
of Ambassador George Weah for
senator in of the County.
The lawmakers set to endorse
Weahs
candidacy
include
lawmakers from the ruling Unity
Party, independent candidates
and other opposition political
parties.
Speaking to FrontPage Africa, a
highly placed legislative source
said the lawmakers will make
their intentions known and
give reasons for the decision
paramount among which would
be to ensure that Mr. Robert
Sirleaf son of President Ellen
Johnson Sirleaf, is not elected as
senator for Montserrado County.
Members of the Montserrado
caucus set to endorse Mr. Weah
include: Rep. Adolph Lawrence
(INDP), Bill Twehway (UP),
Edwin Snowe (INDP), William
Dakel (NDC), Edward Forh
(CDC) and Sekou Konneh (UP).
According
to
information,
Rep. Henry Fahnbulleh (UP),
Josephine Francis (UP) and
Richmond Anderson (LP) are
the three lawmakers who have
vowed not to endorseWeah.
Some lawmakers have vowed
to campaign to ensure that Mr.
Sirleaf, Weahs contender for the
seat, does not obtain a single vote
in their various districts.
But some lawmakers representing
the 17 electoral districts making
up MontserradoCounty have
been accused by some of their
people of doing nothing in their
interest. Some people say the
lawmakers have taken bribes
and compromised their interest.
Voters are threatening to punish
these lawmakers at the next
polls.
Some voters see Mr. Sirleaf as
one of the popular candidates
in the Montserrado County
senatorial race.

Premature Campaign tactics

As many candidates wait for the
National Election commission
(NEC) to announce a date for
the beginning of campaign
for the senatorial polls, which
has been set for next month,
Mr. Sirleaf has come under
criticism by his opponents for
engaging in premature campaign
activities. Sirleafs critics say

he has been using Ebola as a

cover to prematurely campaign.
On Wednesday, residents of
New Kru Town allegedly booed
Sirleaf, when he went to the area
under police escort, to spread
Ebola awareness messages.
Sirleafis said to be reaching out
to every community to spread
preventive message against the
deadly Ebola virus. But his critics

PAGE

say his method of defeating

Ebola is helping to spread it
because the Presidents son
gathers people in huge clusters,
something health experts warn
against.
Kollie B. Zayzay, a staunch
CDC partisan says Mr. Sirleaf
is pre-campaigning without any
penalties. He said Mr. Sirleafs
method of fighting Ebola is

bizarre.
Campaigning in the name of
Ebola, if he really serious he will
go from door to door, Zayzay
posted on his facebook wall on
Wednesday. Gathering like
this is even defeating the Ebola
fight. So why the government
closed schools? Why did
the LFA suspend all football
activities? The sole purpose was
to discourage mass gathering of
people, which could help spread
the disease more rapidly.
Despite the opposition, Mr.
Sirleafenjoys support from other
people who believe that he has
undertaken many development
projects using his own money.
The Presidents sonhas come
under fire from his critics who
have alleged thathe holds dual
citizenship, accusing him of
being an American citizen.But
Sirleaf has on several occasions
not been able to confirm or deny
these allegations.
Weah uncertainty
Despite Weahspopularity in the
county over the last few years,
there are still many who believe
that he is not ready to go into
the race for some unconfirmed
reasons.Some accuse the CDC
strongman of apparently selling
out to Sirleaf, but the CDC has
since dispelledsuch rumors

HAILING BLAIR

Thursday, November 13, 2014

Monrovia
resident Ellen Johnson
Sirleaf has thanked the
patron and founder of
the African Governance
Initiative (AGI), Tony Blair and
his team for remaining with
Liberia during the Ebola crisis.
More recently, with the
difficulty we faced with Ebola,
you have stuck with us. The
team has not left thereby
demonstrating courage and
confidence in our country,
she said, adding, Thank you
Tony for always being there, for
having a team that has continued
to work with us and to enable
us to achieve our planning and
productive goals.
According to an Executive
Mansion release, the Liberian
leader made the assertion
Wednesday, November 12,
during a brief press stakeout
following a breakfast meeting
with Mr. Blair at her residence.
Mr. Blair is on the second leg
of a two-day West African tour
of countries worse affected by
the Ebola virus disease. He had
arrived from Sierra Leone and
will visit Guinea after here.
Today hes here to demonstrate
that he has no fear that he can
come even though we are Ebola
ridden; he can go beyond the
advocacy and show his presence
and what this means in his
support for the Liberian people,
she stressed further.
President Sirleaf thanked the
former British Prime Minister
for the visit and his support to
Liberia through the AGI, his own

advocacy especially in assisting
in planning the countrys long

and the shorter five-year vision,

Responding, Mr. Blair first
expressed condolences to the
President and the Liberian
people for the thousands of lives

lost during this unprecedented

crisis. This is a true tragedy and
a bitter blow to a country that
has made huge strides in recent
years, he said.
The former British Prime
Minister thanked President
Sirleaf for her leadership role
in steering the affairs of State
during this Ebola crisis. Though

he noted the resilience of the

Liberian people in the face of
the crisis and the significant
progress the country is making,
he warned that the crisis is not

enough, we need to eradicate it,
he added, noting that the number

2ND BATCH OF AU MEDICAL TEAM

ARRIVES FOR EBOLA BATTLE

Monrovia high-powered
African Union (AU)
Assistance
Team
which comprises of 28
medical professionals including
doctors and clinicians arrived in
Liberia over the weekend from
across East and West Africa to
assist in the fight against the
Ebola disease ravaging West
Africa.
The AU Assistance Team will
serve under the African Union
Support to Ebola Outbreak in
West Africa (ASEOWA) and is
in West Africa to render medical
and humanitarian assistance
mainly in the areas of training,
epidemiology and psychosocial
support to the three countries
highly affected by the Ebola
disease
including
Liberia,
Guinea and Sierra Leone.
Speaking shortly upon arrival at
the Roberts International Airport
(RIA) in Margibi County, the

Frontpage

head of the AU team, Maj. Gen.

Dr. Julius F. Oketta said the
AU team will be deployed in
the three hardest hit countries
with its Headquarters situated in
Liberia.
A Foreign Ministry release says
the team's aim is to help the
affected nations in curbing the
virus. Maj. Gen. Oketta said the
teams mission will cover three
phases, including providingtraining, epidemiologist, and
psychosocial support to the
population.
While speaking to a team of
journalists at the airport, the
Head of AU team stressed,
With training, our people are
all ready to be a part of the team
that is managing the Ministry of
Defense's treatment unit along
with the Cubans.
Dr. Oketta further noted that
the 28 medical personnel will
be helping to beef up assistance
at
the
Ebola
Treatment

Units(ETU's). He revealed that

withintwo weeks, the second
batch of 35 personnel is expected
in Liberia to total the number up
to 70 personal who will assist in
fighting the disease in Liberia.
Mr.Oketta asserted that some
epidemiologists have already
been deployed in seven counties
in Liberia with majority assigned
in Lofa and Nimba Counties.
According to him, they will
also focus on the areas of
psychosocial support for Ebola
Victims across the three affected
countries.
Expressing optimism that the
virus will soon be contained, he
then hailed Liberians for the
attitude changes towards the
outbreak which he noted has
help reduced the spread of the
virus in Liberia.
They have changed so fast
to understand the situation;
they make the work of the
psychosocial team working with

the government agency very

good because the Government
of Liberia has set up the pillars
and we are supporting those
pillars. We will also work with
other international agencies
to make sure that the country
meets its objectives, Mr. Oketta
mentioned.
The ASEOWA's boss added
that they are working together
to provide education while at
that same time making sure that
the people of Ebola affected
countries
understand
that
Governments and people around
the world are concerned and
cared about them as they battle
against the deadly disease.
Dr. Oketta said the AU will
always volunteer to offer
training on social issue to local
communities working
with
both medical and non medical
aspects.The need for doctors
and nurses are enormous, we
cannot fill in overnight, so
the challenge is that AU will
from time to time mobilize its
member states and volunteers to
come and support, Dr. Oketta
disclosed.
ASEOWA was born out of
meeting of foreign ministers
held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
in September and is expected to
complement the efforts of ongoing humanitarian assistance
and coordinate support provided
to the affected member states
to augment field response
operations. It will also support
public awareness and preventive
measures across Africa and
specifically in the affected
region.

previous outbreak in history.

Mr.
Blair
indicated
that
though
the
international
community has made important
contributions to the Ebola fight
in the worse affected countries,
it needs to follow through on
the commitments that have been
made. He highlighted the need
for treatment centers across the
country as well as the need to
get rid of the travel restrictions
which are causing economic
harm and deterring the badly
needed health practitioners from
coming to the affected countries.
Commercial
flights
must
also resume, Mr. Blair urged,
reiterating that there is no
justification for the dangerous
isolation of Liberia and its
affected neighbors.
He cautioned that the impact of
Ebola will not stop with the final
case; rather, the fragile economy
has been severely battered,
harvests hit and livelihoods lost.
Mr. Blair urged the international
community to rally around
Liberia to turn a year of turmoil
into a decade of progress. An

estimated US$2 billion will

be needed over the next few
years to build more resilient
public services, deliver basic
infrastructure and create jobs in
the sector where Liberia, with all
its resources, has a comparative
advantage, he appealed.
He expressed his pleasure at
working with President Sirleaf
and her Government, noting that
his foundation, AGI, support
governments priorities, not
bringing their own. I would like

LARA LOGAN SHOOTS STORY ON EBOLA IN

LIBERIA, FORGETS TO INTERVIEW AFRICANS,
GETS 'SELF-QUARANTINED' IN LUXURY HOTEL

BS News reporter Lara Logan made waves after going

to Liberia to film a story on the Ebola epidemic but not
interviewing a single Liberian, who were ignored for
American experts.
Despite not contacting any Ebola patients, Logan and her crew "selfquarantined" themselves in a luxury hotel in South Africa. Neither the
reporter nor the four other quarantined CBS employees have shown
any symptoms of Ebola, the deadly virus that has killed nearly 5,000
people in West Africa.
"We wanted to try, as much as possible, to minimize our exposure to
anybody while we still had to get our piece done," Logan said in a
web interview with 60 Minutes Overtime. "We were very mindful of
the fact that this 21-day period after you've been in an Ebola-affected
country is very important to everyone."
On Sunday, 60 Minutes aired a report from Liberia in which the
veteran reporter analyzed how Ebola was ravaging communities in
the West African nation.
In the report, Logan detailed the precautions she and her crew
took while in Liberia, including being hosed down with a chlorine
solution, having temperature taken often, and avoiding physical
human contact. The crew was accompanied by a CBS security worker
who watched closely the crews movements and interactions to blunt
any possibility of infection.
The report, though, fielded criticism for lacking interviews with any
Liberians or Africans, as it focused only on American doctors and
virus experts who, Logan said during the piece, "could bring to light
the suffering of Liberians."
The charge that the piece was American-centric was highlighted by
some in the way a 5-year-old Liberian child - who had died of the
virus after being cared for by his father - was featured.
"It's so heartbreaking," Logan told 60 Minutes Overtime. "It's really
been hard on all of us."
The Ebola report was Logan's second 60 Minutes story since she
returned from a forced leave of absence after controversy from her
previous report on the 2012 attack at a US mission in Benghazi,
Libya. The report, aired in October 2013, was quickly discredited for
its flawed sourcing and dubious claims.

But Nigerian President Goodluck

simply a matter of luck.

on Wednesday and immediately

Although they passed rigid U.N.

will still spend another 21 days

The troops arrived on a chartered

the troops from Liberia, urged an

going there.
The military said the troops will
be housed in air-conditioned
tents and provided with cable
television and Internet facilities

BAGHDAD (AP)
.S.-led coalition airstrikes against
the Islamic State group and other
extremists in Syria have killed more
than 860 people, including civilians,
since they began in mid-September, a monitoring
group said Wednesday.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human
Rights said the vast majority of those killed
746 people were Islamic State militants, while
another 68 were members of al-Qaida's Syrian
affiliate known as the Nusra Front. At least
50 civilians, including eight children and five
women, also have been killed in the airstrikes, the
group said.
In Baghdad on Wednesday, Prime Minister Haider
al-Abadi shook up the country's military, relieving
26 army officers from their command, retiring 10
others and appointing 18 new commanders.
A statement posted on the official website of the
prime minister's office said the changes were
ordered "as part of efforts to reinforce the work of

T
the military on the basis of professionalism and
fighting graft in all its forms."
The statement did not elaborate, but a government
official said the shake-up followed the findings of
a probe carried out by an investigator appointed
last month by al-Abadi on corruption in the
military.
Under Iraq's constitution, al-Abadi, like Nouri
al-Maliki before him, holds the post of General
Commander of the Armed Forces. But it was alMaliki, now a vice president, who had tightly
controlled the military during his eight-year rule,
with several elite units taking their orders directly
from him.
Al-Abadi's move comes as Iraq's military and
security forces, aided by the coalition's airstrikes,
battle militants from the Islamic State group on a
multitude of fronts to drive them out of about a
third of the country they seized in a summer blitz.
The army and security forces had melted away in
the face of the onslaught but have since partially
regrouped.

he family of the first patient diagnosed with Ebola in the

United States announced Wednesday that a settlement
had been reached with the Dallas hospital that treated
him before his death.
The deal with Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital was as good or
better than we would have done in court, Les Weisbrod, a lawyer

for the family of Thomas Eric Duncan, said at a news conference.
Medical malpractice suits in Texas have an upper liability limit
of $250,000 for a claimant. If the Duncan family had taken the
hospital to court, it would have had to reach a very high legal bar,
proving the hospital knew its staff was causing harm when they
treated Duncan.
Staffers at Texas Health Presbyterian had originally sent Duncan
home after he went to the emergency room, even though he had
a fever and was recently in Liberia, among the three hardest-hit
nations in an outbreak that has killed more than 5,000 people.
He died Oct. 8; two nurses who were a part of Duncans medical
team would later contract Ebola but, after treatment elsewhere, be
declared virus-free.
The hospital has also agreed to create a foundation in Duncans
name to fund the construction of a facility to combat Ebola in
Liberia. The fund will be administered by one of the existing
foundations of Texas Health Resources, and the family said it is
seeking contributions.
I can never replace Thomas Eric Duncan, but we can make sure
that we make this better for everyone else, said Josephus Weeks,
Duncans nephew.

Liberias Amadaiya Rennie,

Hammarby had led the table for

They needed a win on the final
day of the season to secure one
of two automatic promotion

fashion, beating Sdra 5-0 on

Rennie, who replaced Norways

MOMENTUM SWINGS IN CDC

FAVOR IN BONG SENATE RACE?
Selma Lomax, selma.lomax@frontpageafricaonline.com

Gbarnga, Bong Countyhen he set out on the mission to contest for the
Bong senatorial election, many did not take him
serious, as they thought he must be a joker, but
contrarily, Augustus Jonathan Flomo of the
Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), at the moment, is fast
becoming a household name in the county.
Already, his rivals, who before now described him as a rabblerouser, said he was just seeking relevance, with some even
speculating he may be unable to go as a candidate of the party,
are at present, acknowledging the fact that he is a very strong
contender in the senatorial race.
A highly experienced politician, Flomo has undeniably proven
his critics wrong. As a man who knew what he wanted before
embarking on the journey, he has vowed never to allow any form
of distraction deter his ambition.
Recently at the partys headquarters in Gbarnga, Flomo told
reporters that he received a prophetic vision from God to liberate
Bongese (citizens of Bong County) from the yoke of the ruling
National Patriotic Party ( NPP) come December. And ensuring
he fulfils his human side of the prophecy, has within two months

the fight against the a possible
relapse of the deadly virus
with the deployment of over
two hundred volunteers from
the National Youth Volunteer
Service (NYVS ) to join the
Ebola fight across the country.
The volunteers will be
deployed in the fifteen counties
to join local health workers
in the Ebola awareness and
education, contract tracing and
psychosocial counseling.
The NYVS program is
implemented by the Ministry of
Youth and Sports with support
from UNICEF and the United
Nations Peace Building Office.
A volunteer, Patience Dennis
thanked UNICEF and the
government of Liberia for
providing the opportunity for
them to continuously serve
their country.
I will like to use this
opportunity to say a very
big thank you to UNICEF,
the donor agency that is
funding our deployment in the
counties, Dennis said.
Dennis urged the UNDP to
consider increasing the number
of volunteers adding that
there are over three hundred
volunteers waiting to be
deployed.
Dennis said, Mr. Yates, I
will like to inform you while

toured the entire 13 administrative districts in the county; a tour he

started from Jorquelleh District and concluded in Sanoyea district.
Flomo, son of a prominent politician born in Panta District, started
his political journey during his days at Cuttington University,
where he served as a student leader.
A highly committed member of the CDC since he joined shortly
after the 2011 elections, Flomo has made personal sacrifices
towards the advancement of the party in the county. He has
sponsored many party programmes, and also used his personal
resources to maintain peace in the party.
Speaking on his chances, he said he is confident of winning the
special senatorial election and will be the first to deliver Bong
County to the CDC come December.
In Flomo words: I have no problem with the large number of
aspirants we have in the CDC in the county today. Let them keep
coming. The only thing I know is that I declared my intention
to be senator a very long time ago. I have been consistent in my
quest to get the incumbent senator Jewel Howard-Taylor out of the
way. Some people doubted me at the beginning but now that they
know that it is possible to defeat Jewel and the fact that Bongese
are tired of her, they are now coming out to say they want to be
senator. Where were they all this while? But to me, that shouldnt
be a problem. Even the Bible says when harvest time comes, we
will harvest the good seeds and the bad seeds will be discarded.
So far, Flomo has been receiving various endorsements from
various groups both within and outside the CDC. Recently, a
group within the Bong Chapter of the NPP, Movement for True
Change in Bong, MTCB, urged other senatorial candidates to
drop their ambitions and support Flomo.
Chairman of the group, Patrick Dunbar, in a statement Monday,
described Flomo as the only candidate that could rescue Bong
County from the shackles of oppression and poverty that has
become a trademark of the county during the nine-year period of
Senator Howard-Taylor.
While defending that the CDC now has an experienced candidate
to win the senate seat that has remained elusive since 2005,
Dunbar said:
Bong County needs a capable person to take it to the Promised
Land. CDC needs a credible, trusted and reliable candidate to

actualize that dream. Bongese are frustrated with the Senator

Jewel Howard-Taylor. They are tired of the unfulfilled empty
promises and the elitist policy that has continued to make the
majority poor poorer and the minority few richer.
Also two Civil Society organizations, Action Against Impunity
and Corruption in Governance, AACIG and Women Development
Initiative for Freedom, WDIF, have declared their support for his
ambition.
Addressing a joint press conference on the forthcoming senatorial
election in the county, the two CSOs said the PDP in Lagos will
do itself a lot good fielding Flomo as its candidate, adding that
he stands out among other candidates who have shown interest
in the race.
President of AACIG, Austin Emmanuel said it has followed
Flomos track record as a politician and Accountant for over a
decade and has come to the conclusion that he is a honest and
unblemished politician, whose sole aim of vying for the highest
seat in Bong is to establish justice and create an enabling
environment for the downtrodden masses to thrive in the county.
He added: Not only did this highly experienced politician and
Accountant supported various anti-corruption at Cuttington
University, where he served as Chief Accountant, he also
personally instituted several measures at the institution where
he was honored by the president of the University Dr. Henrique
Flomo Tokpa, who is also contesting. He therefore urged citizens
of the county who want true change to support Flomos ambition
for the realization of the Bong County dream.
Director of WDIF, Angela Johnson said her group decided to
support Flomos ambition because they believe he will give equal
representation to women if he eventually becomes the senator of
the county.
She said: Mr. Flomo has done a lot for women through his
profession. Testimonies abound of how he has given succor to
lots of women, especially widows of the county affected by the
civil war who visited and he attended to their needs free of charge.
Many of these people told us that they are alive today because
God used this man to save their lives. This is the kind of man we
want at the helm of affairs in Bong County so he can do much
more.

BRUTAL TRUTH OF EPIDEMIC

Emmanuel Thompson
appears first, peering
through the doorway
of the house in the Clara Town
slum. Then tiny Mercy McGill,
trots out, and soon there are
10 children running around,
shrieking, laughing, looking
incredibly cute... and potentially
carrying deadly Ebola.
For every one of these children
has emerged from the house of
a man who bled to death just
two days ago from the terrifying
virus. Each one of their smiling,
innocent faces is a ticking Ebola
time-bomb - but for all the claims
that the disease is under control
in Liberia, no one in authority
has done anything to monitor or
check them.
This is the brutal truth about the
outbreak that has ravaged West
Africa and reached the U.S.,
Spain, Germany, and the U.K:
not only are huge numbers of
carriers simply 'disappearing'
from official figures, but the
number of children left orphaned
is at least three times the size of
existing estimates.
James Dorbor Jallah, one of the
most senior figures in charge
of Liberia's fight against Ebola,
told MailOnline that his country
alone has probably 12,000
children who have lost their
parents to the virus, not the 3,600
currently feared.
Ebola risk but no monitoring:
Outside a shack in the Clara
Town slum in Monrovia,
Liberia, children who live in the
same house as a man who bled
to death two days ago are not
being checked. From back row,

No sign of lockdown: In the

The brutal reality of the Ebola
outbreak in the Monrovian slums
'It is a huge number. It pains my
heart every time I think about
them. Even if Ebola were to end
tomorrow we would have that
magnitude of children whose
future is totally in limbo. It is
heartburning.'
He admitted that despite claims
the virus has plateaued, in 80
per cent of the country they are
not in control and that incidents
like the ten children in . 'It is
very scary... People are moving
freely, people who should be
in quarantine, some people are
under observations and then they
disappearand nobody knows
where they've gone to.'
His department is recording 100
new Ebola cases every day.
Even in the Clara Town slum,
in the heart of the capital, lapses
are obvious. I watch as the ten
children run from the 'Ebola
house' and mingle freely with
the dozens outside - ignoring the
chlorine-washing prescribed.

to push down on the handle,
no-one bothering to disinfect it
or themselves, happily sharing
jokes, no-one worrying about
bodily contact. It doesn't look
like an area in lockdown.
Liberia is the country hardest
hit by Ebola, which has already
killed more than 5,000 people
in the latest outbreak. When
the World Health Organisation
announced last week that
there had been a drop in new
infections, few regarded it as
anything other than a temporary
respite.
It is easy to see why.
Katumu Thompson, 31, sits with
her son Emmanuel on her knee in
front of the house by the roadside
in Clara Town, selling bottles of
water to passers by.
There are ten rooms in the house,
she says, and in them live 10
families - including her own with between them at least 10
children. Living in one of the
rooms was Selekee Konneh, 33,
who had recently arrived from
Guinea, another Ebola hotspot.

Fears of a new outbreak: In Clara

not under control despite reports
that the epidemic has peaked

residents to dry their washing,

No hygiene: Kautuma, 31,

Emmanuel outside the shack
where they live in the Clara
Town slum in Monrovia, Liberia.
She lives in the house where a
man died two days ago but hasn't
been tested
At first he was fine, then he fell

sick. Two days ago, she says,

an ambulance arrived to take
him away. People in protective
clothing hosed down the room
and closed the door, and then
they left.
Later, they learned that he had
tested positive for Ebola. The
treatment centre that admitted
him will have filed a report to the
ministry of health about where he
lived and what should then have
happened was that everyone
was placed in quarantine for 21
days to prevent the spread of the
disease.
But there are not enough people
to follow up such reports, so
everyone simply carried on as if
nothing had happened. Katumu
could already be incubating
Ebola - but no one is keeping
track.
'Of course I am worried,' says
Katumu. 'But we cannot be
afraid and we believe that we
cannot contract Ebola. I cannot
see Ebola, only God. God can
protect us.'
I am afraid. I know that coming
across any group of people I may
contract the virus
Another local resident, student
Charlotte Msaye, 29, says that
after an initial panic when the
outbreak first swept through
Monrovia, people have become
complacent and will not to listen
to the safety advice.
'I am afraid. I know that coming
across any group of people I may
contract the virus,' she says.
'But other people are stubborn
and if you stay indoors you can't
get food to eat. They have no
alternative - they are getting on
with living their lives.'

The children are staying with
an aunt. They say they have
received no assistance from the
authorities.
On the other side of the mud
street, sisters Jebeh Maccy, 17,
Angel, 7 and Miatta, 9, also
find themselves relying on the
kindness of relatives after their
mother, 59-year-old Wokie
Kabba, died from Ebola. Their
father has been missing since the
outbreak of the country's civil
war.
Wokie sold food in the market,
says Jebeh, but wanted more

she says. 'She made me happy.'

that what sparked off their

all of a sudden realized that
the outbreak of Ebola in this
region was actually a threat to
their own nationals and their
citizens, which to me appears to
be self-serving.'

Jallah says it is unfortunate that
much of the current international
aid spending is now focussed on
building treatment units when
money is needed for more urgent
work. What is needed, he says,
is funding for teams of people
- known as contact tracers - to
follow up on reported cases such
as the one in Clara Town.
Inside the MSF treatment centre
in Monrovia, where staff in
protective suits tend to the sick
and dying, spokesman Fernando
Calero picks up a form which
staff fill in when a new patient
arrives, listing who they contact.
The forms are sent to the health
ministry, but that's where MSF's
involvement ends.
Calero is frustrated. The money
is going to the wrong places,
he says. No-one wants to step
forward to take charge of
something as basic as tracing
those who have come into
contact with people who have
tested positive for the disease.
'Everyone is raising money for
treatment centres,' he says. 'We
don't need treatment centres
but they all want to build them
because they want the biggest
one. But there are a lot of other
things to do and they should
readapt.'

NEW VENUE FOR AFCON

A

Hayatou: African Cup host to be named in 2-3 days

CAIRO (AP)
new host for the African Cup of
Nations will be named in 2-3
days, the Confederation of African
Football said Wednesday, although
it still hasn't made contact with the countries
who could possibly replace Morocco.
"All I can say is that it will be played
somewhere," CAF President Issa Hayatou
said in comments published Wednesday by the
African soccer body from an interview with
television station France 24.
Hayatou offered no clarity on the new host
for the continent's top tournament with only
two months to go until kickoff. But he did say

it would go ahead as planned in January and

February.
Morocco was dumped as host and thrown
out of the 2015 African Cup on Tuesday after
insisting it should be delayed over fears of the
spread of Ebola. The CAF president said "it
was absolutely necessary to end this standoff"
with Morocco by stripping it of hosting rights.
CAF had "a few requests" from African
federations to step in for Morocco, Hayatou
said in the France 24 interview, which was
originally broadcast Tuesday night. However,
CAF still had to fully investigate the options.
"We have not had the time to get in touch with
these federations to try to define the contours

of the organization," Hayatou said, according

to the interview transcript released by CAF.
"Therefore, I cannot tell you where it will be
played. All I can tell you is that it will take
place."
Hayatou added: "Wait for two or three days."
Nigeria, Angola and Gabon have been
mentioned as possible stand-in hosts, while
South Africa, Egypt, Sudan, Ghana and Algeria
have all seemingly ruled themselves out. No
country has yet said publicly it wants to host
the tournament at short notice.
Hayatou did say that delaying the tournament
as Morocco had requested would have
hurt CAF's relationship with its sponsors, while

PRICE L$40

some of Africa's top players may not have

been released by their European clubs to
play in a re-scheduled tournament.
That would have been like signing a
"death warrant" for African football,
Hayatou said.
"Once you postpone this event, it will
open the door for everybody to ask for a
delay of any competition and we will no
longer be credible and cannot organize
anything," he said. "We will hurt our
sponsors and partners ... That is what I
told the Moroccans. We cannot sign our
death warrant, because if we postpone
this event, it will be very deadly for
African football."
Hayatou's comments underlined CAF's
most pressing reason for keeping the
African Cup to the planned dates of
Jan. 17-Feb. 8: a delay would affect
the money-earning potential of its main
tournament and source of revenue.
