Chuckles, the Vietnamese pot-bellied pig,

made his way Strathmores town council meeting on Nov. 5.
Owner Trevor Dahl pleaded for Chuckles to
remain in their home, allowing Chuckles to
continue to assist Christina Dahl as a certified
emotional support animal (ESA). Chuckles sat
patiently and was well-behaved and quiet, in
spite of the crowd on hand.
I do apologize because there was a lot of
confusion starting from the very first meeting,
then the second one, when we asked for permission to speak and then when more information played out after that, said Dahl. Since the
very first meeting and through the second one
to and continuing on to this meeting, there has
been a lot of information that has come forward and a lot of information that didnt get
presented in a timely manner. We seem to have
managed to get it in now.
Dahl made a renewed attempt to address the
concerns that have been raised. He submitted
the certification that Chuckles was indeed an
ESA and he was taking courses to complete his
second therapy animal certification based out
of Edmonton.
Dahl said the Strathmore bylaw lumps Chuckles under a livestock category, where Canada
Statistics categorizes pot-bellied pigs under pet
categories. He clarified that Chuckles walks
on a leash similar to any dog and likes to go
for walks. Dahl would like to be able to take
Chuckles for walks, keeping him on a leash. He
said he has been a farrier for 17 years and has
trained to care for Chuckles, including trimming
his tusks.
Dahl does not think breeding pot-bellied pigs
should be allowed in Strathmore, but would
like to see the limit per household set to two
pigs (with conditions), as they are communal
animals and are more settled with a companion.
Councillor Pat Fule said his mind is open on
the issue; however he would only be considering the letters submitted from people in the
Town of Strathmore.
Councillor Bob Sobol asked about Christinas
medical documents and Chuckles animal support documents, and asked about Chuckles
neutered state.
Would it shock you to hear that I have received a whole bunch of letters, not from neighbours but from people in Strathmore and area
against this issue? said Sobol.

Remembering our fallen heroes

After the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Strathmore Civic Centre, there was a short
service held at the Strathmore Cemetery Field of Honour on Nov. 11. Prior to going out in
the bitter cold, the ceremony included a message from the Prime Minister read by Comrade
Ron Howard, a welcome from Deputy Mayor Brad Walls and guest speakers Strathmore Fire
Chief Muir Furzer and Comrade Doug Seaton. Comrades Gwen Dewar and Betty McKay
lead a Supreme Sacrifice Ceremony assisted by Strathmores 903 Squadron Air Cadets, followed by the Laying of the Wreaths, also with the help of the cadets. For more Remembrance
Day coverage, see Pages 12-13.

Lions welcome community

SHARON MCLEAY

A warm welcome met guests at the
Strathmore Golf Club, when the Strathmore Lions celebrated their community
open house wine and cheese party on
Nov. 6.
This is the second year we have held
this open house, said Strathmore Lions
President Greg Helfrich. It is our way
to say thank you to the community.
There was a video and print showcase of photography by club photographer Don Geiger, depictions of various
projects that the Strathmore Lions have
supported over the years and plaques

on display indicating their fine work in

the community.
One project they are considering in
the future is constructing a gazebo or
playground equipment for the green
space behind Grand Pointe Estates on
the east side of Strathmore.
A surprise award was given to Robert and Coleen Cardiff for their work
in membership and sponsorship drives.
Overall, club members mentioned
there was a better turnout this year and
others indicated they really enjoyed the
evening.
Shelley Hall was the spokesperson
and committee organizer.
The Strathmore Lions Club would

like to thank the community for their

support over the past 76 years, said
Hall. We appreciate the time and dedication the volunteers gave us throughout those many years. Without the donations and support of the community
we would not be able to provide our
services as thoroughly as we do year
after, year.
The Strathmore Lions are always
looking for new members. If anyone is
interested they meet the first and third
Thursdays in the Chuck Mercer Room
at the Strathmore Civic Centre (120

AHS extends helping hand to Medical First Responders

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

The trained medical volunteers serving on the Strathmore
Fire Department (SFD) will be feeling a little safer, after
hearing Alberta Health Services (AHS) is offering to deliver
medical direction to them, if they deliver medical aid prior to
the arrival of area ambulances.
To build on the point of Councillor Bob Sobol and customer service, this is a service that the fire department has
provided in the past and continues to provide today, said
SFD Captain Bas Owel. It is medical response when no ambulance is available to respond in Strathmore. So if EMS is
called and is not able to respond in a certain amount of time,
the fire department is called to provide first line medical response to residents in Strathmore.
Previously the fire department had a joint agreement with
WADEMSA for providing medical service. Owel said the
agreement should really have been formally documented
with WADEMSA, but since AHS has taken over medical supervision of EMS in Alberta, it follows to accept their offer of
medical direction for first responders.
The arrangement will offer some liability insurance for
those trained individuals as previously they were relying on
the Good Samaritan Act for coverage in case of complications.
All municipalities within the Calgary Zone of Alberta
Health Services have been offered medical oversight at no
cost to the municipality. AHS adopted the term Medical

First Responder (MFR) to unify the different varieties of first

responders in the province. It defines a Medical First Responder as any agency that is routinely dispatched by 911,
is trained, equipped and responds to medical incidents prior
to EMS arrival, but does not transport patients as a Medical
First Responder.
A press release by AHS states that local communities have
a say in what level of response is offered by their local medical first responder agency. However it isn`t clear at this time
what standards or responsibility MFR`s under their direction
will be required to meet.
It states while agencies will be expected to meet the programs minimum requirements, it is not AHS intent to introduce a minimum standard that requires enrolment with
Alberta College of Paramedics. It is important to note that
municipalities and agencies will be able to choose if they
want to participate in the program depending on community interest, resources, capacity and ability to respond to
calls. www.albertahealthservices.ca/Data/ahs-data-ems-mfrmedical-first-responders.pdf
We are asking council to accept the formal invitation by
AHS to provide medical direction to the Strathmore Fire Department, said Linda Nelson, Deputy CAO for Strathmore.
Council complied with a unanimous vote.
When asked, Fire Chief Muir Furzer agreed that it was a
good thing.
We welcome the move as currently we don`t have any
direction and it leaves responders open to liability threats,
said Furzer. This will be good for the department.

Learning money management

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Contributor

Grade 7 students at
Crowther Memorial Junior High School learned
about managing their
money during the annual
Dollars with Sense workshop on Nov. 5.
The
program, and
many others, are offered
through Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta
( JASA). The programs are
taught to Grades 5-12,
with a different one being offered for each age
group, including learning
investment strategies, our
business world, economics for success and more.
These programs are
meant for kids in schools
now and at young ages. I
found out from personal
experience, kids get out

of school and they have

no idea about money
management, entrepreneurship skills, said
Tristan Periard, Junior
Achievement representative. They dont have
any idea about money
management. So the
class were doing today is
Dollars with Sense, it really teaches the kids how
to budget their money
and they might not learn
these skills anywhere
else.
Periard could not stress
enough the importance
of educating younger
generations with these
skills that will be an asset to them in the future.
Its so important to
have these programs
come to the school to
teach students, because
as they go into the real

world, if they dont know

how to budget their money, then they will have a
struggling real world experience, said Periard.
Programs like those
offered through Junior
Achievement will also
help the students as
they move on into postsecondary
education,
and helps them figure
out where they can save
money, or gives them
ideas on how much they
will need to work in order to get by.
It really leads up to
them moving out of high
school and the skills they
need moving out of it,
said Periard.

Its not too often you find a scientific textbook
that was written 156 years ago and is still in print.
The book is Grays Anatomy (not the TVs show),
written in 1858 by Henry Gray, a London doctor and
surgeon. The book is in its 40th printing and is still
used by the medical community today.

Its that time of year again when we become more

aware of passing on viruses and bacteria to our
friends and family. Shaking hands has become so
part of everyday life but it can be a source of infection
transfer. Ideas suggested as a substitute include fist
or elbow bumping or even a bow. Hard to change
ingrained habits but its worth considering.

Council makes amendment for pig

Continued from Page 1

Dahl said no and both Sobol and
Dahl agreed there are two sides to every issue.
Sobol read a letter from Rescue and
Sanctuary for Threatened Animals
(RASTA). The letter outlined the perils of having a pot-bellied pig as a pet.
RASTA indicated that Vietnamese potbellied pigs require specialized care as
a pet and really should not be kept in
an urban setting, but rather in an agricultural setting.
When asked, the Strathmore bylaw
officer was still not in favour of expanding the bylaw to include pot-bellied pigs.
Councillor Denise Peterson approved
of the documentation Dahl had gathered to support his case.
She said one of the requirements she
had to make a decision was that Dahl
get the approval of his adjacent neighbours and supply more documentation.
That you would provide proof that
this was an animal crucial to your
childs health well-being and talk to
the lengths you have gone to make
sure this is a healthy and well cared
for animal, said Peterson. I am convinced the CD you have provided, and
the information with the letters you
have provided ... from councillors and
doctors, have shown beyond a shadow
of a doubt that this animal is not only
important, but crucial to the well-being
of your family. I think it is a different
issue from changing the bylaw. I appreciate the education you have given
me.
Mayor Michael Ell said that he had
an open mind, would listen to both
sides of an issue and how they affect
Strathmore residents. He wanted to
ensure the appropriate documentation
was in place and he needed to listen
to the recommendations of the bylaw
officers.
Councillor Rocky Blokland asked
about infractions of the 10 pot-bellied
pigs currently kept by residents of

D
SOL

with newer renovations and quality
upgrades

Chestermere, and was told they only

one had one infraction where a pig
wandered onto the golf course.
Blokland directed administration,
with the agreement of council, to bring
back to the next council meeting an
amendment to the bylaw, with a special exception to the bylaw that could
be made for the Dahls to keep the potbellied pig in their home. All members
of council voted in favour of the direction.
Once administration brings the special amendment back each councillor
and the mayor will again have the opportunity to vote whether to accept or
reject the amendment and special exception.
The issue has caused a lot of support letters for both sides of the issue
and Dahl said he certainly got a crash
course in social media throughout the
process.

Disc golf comes to Strathmore

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Reporter

A group of representatives from the Strathmore
Assembly of Youth (SAY) proposed the installation of an 18-hole disc golf course in Strathmore,
to council on Nov. 5.
Our main goal is to increase youth involvement in Strathmore, said Susan Swann, one of
the representatives.
The group said youth would be interested in
utilizing the course, but it also could be played
by families and senior citizens. While it is a fun
pastime for anyone, it is also recognized professionally.
The equipment for the game consists of a
mounted hoop and participants throw frisbees
into them. The hoops have a basket that is mounted on a pipe set in cement. Both are locked together then padlocked for security. There would
also be a sign to indicate the course direction, and
tees would be a pad of grass, gravel or asphalt
marked with paint.
The 18-hole course would start in Brentwood
and wind its way through parks and walkways
to Maple Park and Dinosaur Hill through to the
Cambridge area to the Lions Park and finally the

open area behind the Birth Forest Park.

The group asked council if they would be willing to take over the ownership and maintenance
of the course, once it was installed. SAY members
would be involved in the labour of installation of
the course.
Players would be responsible to purchase their
own discs (similar to Frisbees) and they can be
purchased in Calgary, or the group might consider selling them depending on how the idea
develops.
All told the project would cost around $13,000.
Sponsors will be approached and business logos
of contributors will be put on the signs at each
hole.
You have done an excellent job and I commend you on so many levels your planning
and presentation, said Councillor Peterson.
Peterson moved that Strathmore sponsor the
first hole of the course for $1,000 maximum.
Council voted unanimously to accept the motion.
Councillor Pat Fule commended teachers Jill
McDonald and Susan Ruzek for giving up their
spare time to work with the group and help the
students accomplish so many good projects for
the Town of Strathmore.

Welcome to Strathmore
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Reporter

Small steps were taken by Strathmore council
to increase economic development by approving
a policy on Nov. 5 that would welcome new businesses.
The program was drafted by administration in
hopes of providing information and incentives to
new businesses, making Strathmore a desirable
town to locate their business.
Applications for the Welcome to Strathmore
program will be included when the business applies for their license.
New businesses (except home-based business-

an introduction to the public at a regular council
meeting, a new profile under New in Town on
the town website, a listing in the town section
of the local newspaper, and be offered a ribboncutting ceremony with Mayor, council and local
media present.
Their information package includes contact
business cards, info on other businesses and organizations, relevant bylaws that would affect their
business, a town promotional and resource guide,
a mug, pin, and a free swim and skate pass.
No discussion was conducted on the policy in
chambers and council voted unanimously to accept the policy.

Veterans week 2014

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

During the month of November, Canadians
come together to honour those who have sacrificed to make our world a safer place. I encourage
everyone to visit veterans.gc.ca/iremember where
you can learn more about the contributions to our
nation by Canadas military veterans. Our Government encourages Canadians to honour our brave
men and women by attending a Remembrance
Day ceremony, visiting a local cenotaph or monument, thanking Veterans, wearing a poppy, and
sharing a story about a loved one who has served.
As your Member of Parliament, I find it remarkable that so many of us in Crowfoot take the time
and make the effort to attend Remembrance Day
ceremonies. In the past, I have laid the Government of Canada Wreath at many small and large
ceremonies in our Crowfoot Riding and I am always impressed by the strong showing of support
for Canadas military veterans.
The World Wars Commemoration period (20142020) marks the 100th anniversary of the First
World War and the 75th anniversary of the Second World War. As a nation, we have a duty to
remember the more than 650,000 Canadians and
Newfoundlanders who served in the First World
War and the more than one million Canadian and
Newfoundland men and women who served in
the Second World War.
Many of you, particularly families with past or
current members of the Canadian Armed Forces
will know that as part of Canadas World Wars
Commemoration period, all living Canadian Veterans of the Second World War are eligible to receive

a limited-edition commemorative lapel pin and a

certificate of recognition. This tribute includes living Canadians who served with Canadian forces
or with any other Allied force (including the Canadian or British Merchant Navy), either at home
or abroad, during the Second World War. Please
contact my office for more details or assistance.
This year, our thoughts and prayers will include
the family and friends of Corporal Nathan Cirillo
who was murdered as he provided a ceremonial
Honour Guard at Canadas National War Memorial. We also remember and pray for the family
and friends of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent
who was killed in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu by an
ISIL-inspired terrorist. These events are a grim reminder that Canada is not immune to the types of
attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world.
We are also reminded that attacks on our security
personnel and our institutions of governance are,
by their very nature, attacks on our country, on
our values, on our society, on us, Canadians, as a
free and democratic people who embrace human
dignity for all.
I hope that everyone can attend your local Remembrance Day service this year. The cenotaphs
throughout our region of Crowfoot and in communities across Canada are sacred places that pay
tribute to those who gave their lives so that we
can live in a free, democratic and safe society.

Food Bank thanks the community

LORRAIN FARRAN
Wheatland County Food Bank

The Wheatland County Food Bank would like
to thank out community for the ongoing support.
We would also like to extend a big thank you to
our dedicated volunteers who have put in over
4,600 volunteer hours and distributed 568 hampers so far in 2014. The Wheatland County Food
Bank has also received fantastic volunteer effort
from community partners. On Oct. 22, the Strathmore Brownies and Girl Guides held a food drive

and collected 1,300 pounds of food, which helped

greatly in filling our shelves.
As well, over the summer months the food bank
received hundreds of pounds of garden produce,
which was donated by local community partners.
As the end of the year approaches we would like
to remind the community of our office hours. We
are open Monday to Thursday from 12-4 p.m., but
we will be closed from Dec. 22 to Jan. 5 for holidays. Inquiries regarding the Wheatland County
Food Bank can be directed to 403-324-4335.

Cheadle Lions comedy night a success

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Laughter rolled out of Cheadle Hall on Nov. 8, when comedians Kevin Stobo and Laurie
Ford put on a show for local
residents.
Stobo was born in Banff, and
has competed in comedy competitions throughout the country. He has made appearances
on Just for Laughs, the Montreal
Comedy Festival, and moved on
to many other TV appearances
and performance opportunities.
Stobo worked the stage like a
cautious farmer, cultivating the
crowd for just the right jokes to
tickle their funny bones. In spite
of the hot lights from the stage,
Stobo dug in his bag of comedic
material and threw out seeds of
a wide assortment of jokes that
grew belly laughs from most of
the packed hall.

Stobo performed a 30-40 minute comedic performance on

everything from relationships to
Rudolph, parenthood to Newfie
jokes.
Lori Ferguson Ford hails from
BC and was Stobos warm-up
act. She was elected BCs funniest woman, and has performed
at comedy clubs all over Canada
and the United States. She has
also appeared on many television shows including ones
on the Comedy Network. Ford
warmed the crowd up slowly
and then smoothly had them
hooked when, John sitting in
the front row, became the main
attraction. Johns good sense of
humour and Fords set of jokes
had the crowd relaxed and
ready for more fun.
The Cheadle Lions retained
the entertainers, and held a silent auction to raise money to
renovate their local ball dia-

mond.
The total cost will be about
$75,000. Upgrades needed are
new fences, dugouts, landscaping and construction, irrigation
and shrubbery and lawn.
We are raising money for our
local ball diamond, or our field
of dreams as we call it, said Jim
Jones, Cheadle Lions member.
We wanted to get it done last
year, but didnt have enough
money, so we are hoping to get
it done this year.
Jones said new members are
joining and they have young
families, so the diamond will be
a good project for the community as a whole. The diamond will
serve youth minor and midget
baseball and fastball.
If anyone wants more information about contributing to
the ball diamond fundraising
or becoming a Cheadle Lions
member, call 403-660-3650.

Boob Tour returns

It was a packed house as the Boob Tour returned to the Strathmore Civic Centre on Nov 7. This was the fourth year for the fundraising event organized by the Magical Moms Amy Hampton, Shelly Neal, Patti Van Bavel and Dawn Kalbhen. All proceeds
from the show go to the Alberta Cancer Foundation and this year, through the Foundation, they were able to direct the funds
raised to the Enhanced Patient Care Programs at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the Drumheller Community Cancer Centre.
The event included a cash bar, food, a silent auction, a 50/50 draw and of course plenty of laughs provided by four very funny
stand-up comedians. Comedians Steve Mazan (back l-r), Clare Belford, Dan Taylor and Ryan Paterson. Organizers Amy Hampton (front l-r), Shelly Neal, Patti Van Bavel and Dawn Kalbhen.

Strathmore pawn shop robbed

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

A break-in occurred at Strathmore Pawn and Collectables on
Lakeside Avenue in downtown
Strathmore on Nov. 6, in the early morning hours.
Tanya Andersen, joint owner
of the business, said it was determined the culprits came in
and, within three minutes, swept
the shop of antique jewelry and
military medals and artefacts
and then they left.
Police responded quickly and
we were thankful for that, said
Andersen. They often dont get

enough credit for the work they

do.
She said she has insurance,
but thinks the value of all the
articles taken will be substantial.
She doesnt think insurance will
cover one tenth of the value of
the articles taken.
It could have been worse. Nobody was hurt. The store wasnt
smashed up or burnt down, you
have to look at the positive,
said Andersen.
The store already has alarms
and surveillance video, which
the RCMP are reviewing.
In hindsight, she doesnt think
they will place reinforcing bars

on the windows. She said it

gives a bad image to the business and town.
Andersen said she thinks if
thieves want to gain entry, they
will find a way in.
The Strathmore Pawn and
Collectables is a family business and they hope customers
will continue their patronage
in spite of the incident. She is
confident the RCMP will locate
suspects involved.

A LITTLE RESPECT,
PLEASE AND THANK YOU!
IIt is a week filled with somber
respect for us. The crosses have
appeared in front of the Legions, and
the field of Honor is on Memorial
Drive in Calgary. Poppies are evident
at the checkouts, and many people
are wearing them. And it is a time
when we are reminded to remember
and respect ...
Is that same attitude present for the
other 51 weeks of the year?
Id like to say yes ... a few weeks
ago, as I was in the lead car of a
funeral procession, we realized that
a truck that was coming up behind
the procession slowed and made the
traffic stay back until the procession
was all the way onto the road way
... a wonderful sign of respect for a
grieving family, preparing to lay their
loved one at rest. In a similar way,
as we drove by the school yard to
another burial recently, we noticed
the young students stop, remove
their hats, and stand with an attitude
of respect, as the procession drove
by. I have noticed people open doors
for others, saw someone go over and
help a senior out of their vehicle and
step up onto the curb, in the snow
the other day ... thank you to those
who live, showing concern and
respect for others around them ...
Is that same attitude present for the
other 51 weeks of the year?
I sometimes think no. I saw a child
take a swing at a parent the other
day, and it was not in jest ... I heard

the language of a youth and an adult

in conversation at a local restaurant,
the other day, and the language was
far beyond what anyone could consider respectful, and was far louder
and more colorful than necessary as
it subjected all around, including a
young family, to terms and attitude
that none of us needed, or deserved
or wanted to hear. I watched as an
adult made a gesture and showed
great disrespect to a youth who was
trying to do the right thing, as they
drove the other day ... I ask each one
of us to please consider our words
and actions, and please, take the
example of this week of Remembrance forward, to show respect and
compassion to all others around us,
for the other 51 weeks of the year.
In 1 Thessalonians 4, Paul wrote
Make it your ambition to lead a
quiet life, to mind your own business,
and to work with your hands just
as you have been told, so that your
daily life may win the respect of
outsiders and so that you will not be
dependent on anybody.
Would it hurt any of us, young or old,
to show a little more respect, day to
day? I dont think so. And will it be a
blessing to the world and to others
around us, as we do? I know so.
So lets do it, lets show it, lets hold
it up ... a little respect please and
thank you!

The Canadian dollar is dropping against the U.S. Whether you believe the new deal with China (based on their currency) is a long term benefit or not, much of our trade is with the U.S. This means
that goods made is the US and shipped to Canada will be paid for in US currency. If the Canadian doller is substantially lower, the exchange rate can result in an increase in prices. Prices are already
starting to increase in some manufacturing areas of the economy and with diesel prices remaining extremely high, shipping will increase as well. Canadian made - no duty or exchange.

We also want to express our gratitude, for their service and

Pethick & Wendy Rubner

Judy was born in Maple Creek, Sask. in

1945, the first of five children. She started Grade 1 at Fox Valley, where she was
bussed to school. The school bus driver
was the father of the former mayor of
Strathmore - Keith Schneider!
She remembers that one cold winter
day, the driver forgot to pick her up, and
the nuns of a nearby
Catholic
Nunnery
took her in, gave her
hot food, then she
waited there until
the bus returned. For
Grades 2 through 5,
she attended a prairie schoolhouse with
a single teacher, who
taught all grades.
She remembers being very active as a
volleyball player at
school. After completing her education
in Medicine Hat, she
became a pharmacists assistant for the
next 14 years.
She then opened
Tranquility Bay Enterprises in Winnipeg Beach, Man., which manufactured
auto air fresheners, barbecue starters,
etc. Her new manufactured products
territory covered Ontario, Manitoba,
Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C. So, Winnipeg Beach was a central point for this
area.
At the same time she obtained her
dealers licence, which permitted her to
sell all types of autos. She also took flying lessons at St Andrews Airport Flight
School, near Winnipeg. She met her husband, a penitentiary officer, in Medicine
Hat in 1963, and they were married in
1964.
They had one daughter, Wendy, born
in Medicine Hat in 1966. Judy and Wendy moved to Strathmore in the early
1980s where Wendy graduated from
Samuel Crowther High School in 1984.

That same year, Judy and Wendy

opened Golden West Jewelry on Third
Avenue in Strathmore, and moved Tranquility Bay Enterprises head office to
the same location. Golden West Jewelry is a retail outlet, which sells giftware, gold and silver jewelry, watches,
and offers repairs of these items, as well
as family heirlooms.
This year they celebrate 30 years in
business, at this location. Wendy worked
there for its first year
of operation, then
went to England as a
manager for Journey
For Lives, a cancer
research
organization. On returning
to Canada, she obtained her production accountant certification, and joined
a C.A. firm in 1988,
got married and has
two lovely daughters,
one attending Mount
Royal University, and
the other still in grade school. In 1999,
she entered the Oil, Gas and Mining industry as an accountant and manager.
As a co-owner of Golden West she regularly visits Strathmore. Apart from working and looking after her family, she is
an avid tournament level squash player,
and plays about 7.5 hours per week!
Judy has been a two-term member of
the Strathmore Chamber of Commerce,
and was involved in attempting to get
the Town Council to revitalize downtown.
Both Judy and Wendy are very
pleased to have chosen Strathmore to
locate Golden West Jewelry. They have
gained many customers and friends over
the years, and would like to offer a big
thank-you to the building owners and
management, for the past 30 years of
service.

Drive safely this winter season

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Drivers in Strathmore and Wheatland County should take
extra caution and be aware of the driving conditions this upcoming winter season.
Obviously with the town and county, were working with
regards to what happens when without fail (there is) a
massive snow fall and were going to have an ice storm. Were
going to have something affect the highways that is either
going to cause a lot of grief or shut down the highways,

HELP ME!

said Staff Sergeant Kevin Reilly. Both the county

and the town have worked in the last year or two
with regards to implementing plans if we have
that same type of disaster happening of Highway
1 being shut down.
Reilly wants the public to be more aware of the
winter conditions they are faced with by taking
the proper procedures.
It just a matter of people being smarter and
making them more aware, whether they get snow
tires, whether they drive more cautiously in those
circumstances. We dont plan on causing any enforcement (but) something we have to react to,
said Reilly. (Drivers) have to slow down and be
more cautious, and drive within their limits and
their vehicles limits. Some vehicles are better off
than others and you got to recognize what kind of
tires you have - if you have snow tires its a huge

factor.
Now that the colder weather is here, it will be
expected that there will be a higher rate of accidents on the road.
This coming week its expected to be very cold.
So we expect a lot of people having accidents and
its always that first snow storm or icy roads and
you get a lot of accidents because people are not
used to it and they havent slowed down, said
Reilly.
The accident rate in the area has stayed around
the same every winter.
Reilly really wants the drivers to slow down and
give each other more room.
The RCMP will be running a different campaign
every month. For November they will be cracking
down on Pedestrian Safety, and in December it
will be Impaired Driving.

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings defeated the Medicine Hat Cubs 6-1 at the Family Centre on Nov 8.

Kings coaching staff

like the teams resiliency
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Wheatland Kings are seeing
more resiliency from their players
to have the ability to come back in
hockey games lately.
In Three Hills on Friday night, the
Kings were down 3-0 but were able
to get a couple quick goals to make
it a game, but lost 3-2.
Assistant coach Joel Robinson
applauded the team for not giving
up but he admits the slow start cost
them.
The game against Three Hills on
Friday night was more or less playing 20 minutes of good hockey and
40 minutes of it was questionable
and not necessarily Kings hockey,
said Robinson. Thats something
weve been preaching to the guys
lately is that when we play the way
we can that were a team that no
one in our league can skate with or
even compete with us.
At times were beating ourselves
because of the fact that were letting teams like Three Hills get three
quick ones in the second period
and then in the third we responded
finally, sometimes its just a little too

late.
Kirby Ruzesky and Brayden Beckeley scored for the Kings in the loss.
Robinson does admit though that
the team has shown a lot of character in the last few games and showing signs of getting better in every
aspect in their play.
You look at our penalties to
start the year, we were one of the
most penalized teams. I think if you
look in the last five to seven games,
weve been trying to stay out of the
box and weve been more discipline, he said. I know thats been
a big part of us winning and weve
gotten 10 out of the last 14 points.
I mean were doing things right but
its just weve got to get on a little
bit of a role.
On Saturday night at home against
Medicine Hat, the Kings had a lot of
positives to take out of the game, as
they gave up the first goal but were
able to storm back with six unanswered to beat the Cubs 6-1.
So it shows you, that they did
get the first quick one but we battled back and we showed them no,
were going to dictate this game
and this is Kings hockey, said Robinson.

Some players are consistently

finding themselves on the scoresheet and as a result, line-mates are
producing, too.
Its a good thing, especially a guy
like Cody Willis, he kind of went on
a little bit of a drought there, he
scores a goal last weekend and then
(versus Medicine Hat) he had two
goals and two or three crossbars,
said Robinson. So in a sense a guy
like Cody, hes starting to really take
that stride. We need him to and he
has to get better every game now.
Ruzesky and Willis each scored
twice, while Lucas Jones and Calvin
Gordon also scored in the win.
I think as a unit we only had
four goals scored against us this
weekend, said Robinson. (Were)
one of the teams with the highest
goals for in the league, but worst
goals against. In our last seven
games if you look at it, weve only
had I think less than two or three
goals scored against us.
The Kings will host the Mountainview Colts on Friday, Nov. 14 (8
p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre before heading on the road the
following day to take on the Coaldale Copperheads (at 8:30 p.m.).

Come Cheer On Your UFA Bisons!

Strathmore bull rider, Scott Schiffner,

had an impressive showing at the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) in Edmonton from
Nov 5-9.
He was able to collect total earnings of
$23,618.88 in six rides, thanks to a score
of 87.75 on the last day.
He admits that he could have had better
execution on the bull, but was happy with
the results nonetheless.
You know honestly this year I didnt
do as good as I should have. I won two
rounds on Thursday and Sunday night,
but through-and-through that was the
only two I stayed on, so I wasnt super
impressed with how I performed, said
Schiffner. It was one of them things I
drew some pretty good bulls that I messed
up on, (and) a couple of them bulls I rode
right to the whistle to win a lot money. I
never quite got there and it was one of
them things we expect to do better.
Schiffner admits it was better to come
away with something instead of nothing
at the nations rodeo finals.
Absolutely, thats the biggest thing is
coming up here and winning, and it can
kind of make our year. Its the biggest rodeo we go to all year in Canada and Im
pretty fortunate to win two rounds, but
everybody here is up scouted for a Canadian title. If you dont leave here with a title you should feel like you didnt do what
youre supposed to do, said Schiffner. I
salvaged my weekend for sure, but you
can always do better. Nobody leaves here
happy unless theyve won all six rounds.
He was really impressed with the quality of stock he was able to ride.
As a whole, the stock was really good.
Here in Canada people overlook it that we
have some of the best buckin stock in the
world, said Schiffner.
Schiffners next rodeo to wrap up the
season will be this weekend (Nov. 14-16)
for the Pro Bull Rodeo (PBR) finals in Saskatoon.

weekend points

The UFA Bisons managed to get two ties in their home
games this past weekend at the Strathmore Family Centre.
The local triple-A midget team was able gain a 2-2 tie with
the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers and a 3-3 tie with the SSAC
Athletics on Nov. 8-9.
Were still learning our defensive zone, said assistant
coach Sandy Henry. I think we got a start on it this week.
We did make some improvements and our support needs to
get a little closer at times. We move the puck in short distances versus trying to get across the rink all the time.
They had an effective back check all game long and the
results showed.
I thought our back pressure was good (versus SSAC) as
we had support coming back and letting our defensemen
stand up a little more, said Henry. I think we put in the
effort, we challenged the guys in the third period to bring a
little more passion to this game.
According to Henry, it was tough settling for a tie after
taking a 2-0 lead.
It feels like a little bit that we gave it away versus earning
it, said Henry. This a pretty good hockey team we played
today, we got a point and it keep us in this tight playoff race
were in and everyone is still in it.
Will Conley scored twice to lead the way for the Bisons,
while Trygve Many Guns also tallied for the UFA.
In the first game versus the Rangers, the herd had to play
catch up from behind to salvage a tie.
We had to comeback in that one to get the tie, in a
game that we had reasonably good control over early, said
Henry. I think our expectation coming out of the weekend wouldve been higher than the point level we achieved,
but were working really hard at practice but practice isnt
games and guys feel different levels of pressure in games.
Kyle Gordon and Davis Sheldon supplied the offence versus Fort Saskatchewan.
Next up for the Bisons is Saturday, Nov. 15 in Lloydminster
(4:15 p.m.) and Nov. 16 in Sherwood Park (2 p.m.).

While in competition, the skaters have
to have the utmost confidence in themselves, as well as having their coaches
believing in them.
When were training everyday, Im
just trying to get them to be able to
skate with confidence, because if you
have confidence skating everyday, you
can achieve that at competitions, said
Myers.
He wants to see the skaters focus
on becoming stronger in one area and
work on getting better at it to become a
well-rounded athlete.

The Wheatland Braves continue to
put great offensive numbers so far in
this young campaign as they punished
Airdrie Black 12-3 on Nov. 9 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
We were trying some new stuff,
(such as) new breakouts, changing the
lines a little bit, especially the forwards,
sometimes it was working, sometimes
it wasnt. We think the effort was better
in Fridays game than this game, said
Braves assistant coach Slavo Hakovic.
Despite the large margin of victory, the local double-A peewee team
worked on some things from practice
and implemented them into a game
situation.
We tried some different breakouts
and its important that we have more
options to get out of the zone and
thats what were trying to work on.
Also working on the fundamentals
back checking and pressure, said Hakovic.
He identified that net presence is improving but still needs work in games.
Net presence is what we try to emphasize more and it was 50/50 today
and still lots of space for improvement, said Hakovic.
Goal scorers in Sundays win were
Kyle Crnkovic with four, Kage Yellow-

fly and Brayden Kapty with two each

while Kyle Bray, Mo Hakim, Tristan
Zandee and Adam Kirkpatrick supplied singles.
On Friday, it was Bray and Crnkovic
with the hat tricks while Kapty and
Max Schafer provided two a piece.
Kirkpatrick, Bryce Benfield and Anson
McMaster alos tallied in the 13-1 win
over Airdrie Lightning Red.
The Braves next game is Nov. 22 at
the Strathmore Family Centre versus
Taber 4:45 p.m.
The Wheatland Chiefs are continuing
their undefeated season with a 13-0
dismantling of the Cranbrook Knights
on Friday night at the Family Centre.
I thought we played well all the
way around. We didnt let many shots
against which was good to see, said
the midget double-A coach Devin Olson.
Its one of those games where everyone wants to rush the puck and try to
be the goal scorer. We did let too many
2-on-1, were just lucky they couldnt
execute.
Puck movement was pivotal in the
victory.
We talked to them in between periods about moving the puck, games
like this, guys want to score that goal
instead of making the easy pass, tap in
goals. I thought the second , third periods were good for that, said Olson.
Goal scorers were Jason Hobson
with three, Jayden Smith and Quinton
Peplinski with two each, while Matt
Halkovic, Kyle Rosolowski, Alec Biletsky, Chris Rebeyka and Kody Hammond had one a piece.
The Chiefs next game will be Nov. 21
in Hussar versus the Foothills Bisons
(7:30 p.m.).
The Wheatland Warriors took two
out of three on the road as they beat
Bow Valley 5-0 on Friday night but lost
to them 4-3 the next night, and ended
the trip with a 4-2 win in Lacombe.
Their local double-A bantam team
will be in Olds for their next game on
Nov. 22 (3:30 p.m.).

On November 29th we are having our Annual Light Up the

and have a full day planned for everyone!

Night event

Starting at 1:30pm Aztec Real Estate Inc. is hosting a

Christmas Matinee at the Joyland Theatre. Just bring in a non

perishable food donation for the Strathmore Food Bank and enjoy the movie
POLAR EXPRESS, space is limited so be sure to come early!
After the movie the Town of Strathmore has asked Santa to come to
Kinsmen Park to visit with the kids and hand out candy on behalf of the Town.
This is happening between 3:30 and 5pm.
This leaves everyone lots of time to pick their favorite spot along the Parade
route as the parade starts at 5:30pm and runs until 6:00. The floats will be
lit up and you guessed it, more candy will be handed out!
We always welcome and encourage all those who would like to put a float into the parade.
Just give Rob or Tracey a call at Aztec Real Estate Inc. to get your entry form and all the details
After the parade everyone can venture up to the Ag grounds for 6:30 pm where a group of
dedicated people have prepared the theme park for your enjoyment! There you will be able
to have your photo taken with Santa, enjoy a fireworks show and charity BBQ and stroll through
the park to take in all the displays.
