Load shedding is a major problem in Pakistan.

The crisis started more than a decade ago and is still

persisting. The major reason for this crisis is lack of proper planning and resource management. The ever
growing population needs increasing facilities. Electricity is an important facility in daily life. But lack of
planning according to the demands resulted in deficiency of power.
Businesses like construction, textile, sugar every single industry is facing loss due too this situation.
Students are also among the sufferers. Lack of electricity results in halt of their studies and daily
assignments. Apart from that the severity of climate adds to the problem. Intense temperatures during
the summer and lack of electricity can cause dehydration. Mosquitoes are another problem. Dengue is
very much common in Pakistan and lack of electricity makes people vulnerable to dengue. In short
whole skeleton of everyday life is disturbed in Pakistan.
In order to solve this problem, measures need to be taken at national level. We need to recognize our
resources. Hydro power is a major source of electricity. Pakistan has great potential for hydropower.
Pakistan utilizes less than 20% of its hydropower capacity. Coal power generation Is another source of
electricity. Thar coal reserves are so huge that they can provide electricity to the whole country for over
a century. Apart from that wind energy can also be utilized at seaports like Gawadar. Pakistan has a lot
of natural resources and talented manpower. Need of the hour is to plan carefully and exploit all the
resources and talent available.
Government of Pakistan has recently taken some measures to confront the problem. Major
developments have been made in hydropower and coal power generation sector. Prominent among the
various projects are Neelum-Jehlum hydropower project whose first phase vows to provide 969MW of
power and pledges to cut down the load shedding by two hours daily. Nandipur power project has been
started recently, first phase of which will be completed by the end of 2014. The project includes two
units, one based on coal, producing 425MW and the other base on furnace oil producing 525MW.
Diamer bhasha dam is another marvelous project which will be started soon.
We need such projects and if they continue like this we will overcome our energy crisis very soon.
