EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY I
Lesson Plan Integrating Technology & Pedagogy Directions and Outline
William Gaynor
Standards:
Content NM-Data.9-12.2 - Select and Use Appropriate Statistical Methods to Analyze Data
ISTE - 4.c - Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions
4.d - Use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions
Lesson Objective(s):
Content Students should have a basic understanding of mean, median, mode and range. They will need
to apply the vocabulary they have learned. In this lesson, students will develop a strategic
approach to organizing data. They will be able to understand the relationship between numbers
in a data set through the calculation of median, mean and range. Finally, students will be able
to record and calculate the relationships of their own data sets.
Technology Using a calculator, students will calculate the median, mean and range of data sets that they
record. After students should be able to practice and review these skills later.
Introduce the Learning Activity:
1) To communicate to the students what the lesson will be for the day:
a) Review the key vocabulary that will be used this lesson: median, mean and range.
Explain why the median, mean and range of a given data set are important. Explain
how we will be creating our own data sets and analyzing them.
2) To motivate students for the lesson:
a) The class will discuss how median, mean and range are relative in the real world. The
teacher will ask students what activities in their life have medians, means and ranges.
Examples of real world medians, means and ranges are sport statistics and world
records. The teacher will also introduce the topic that the students will be observing
today, reaction times.
Provide Information:
1) Definitions of the topic should already be known. We will review the needed definitions
and the students will be provided a location to copy them down on the handout

associated with this lesson. All other instruction will be provided to students as the
teacher presents it:
a) When to go to the websites provided on the teachers website and handout.
b) How to do the activities on the websites:
i) Explain how to take the reaction test on each website.
Provide Practice:
1. Students will take the various reaction tests and record all their data on the
handout. After recording their data they will use their calculators to calculate the
mean, median and range. They will do this for each of the three reaction tests.
Students will then review their results and see which results are their best. All of
the space for this practice will be provided on the handout.
2. As stated above students will fill out the handout to practice. After about five to
seven minutes of the individuals collecting their results and calculating their
relationships the students will be group so that they can compare their results to
other students. Groups will also calculate the relationships within their groups
data.
Provide Knowledge of Results:
1. While the students are working on the handout sheet the teacher will walk around to
provide feedback and ensure that students are on task. Providing feedback to students
while circulating the classroom and offering help to the students that need it. Also
answering questions during the review and introduction of the activity to provide
feedback to the whole class.
2. The handout will be collected to review that the students are able to do the required
calculations. Written feedback will be provided on the handout to show students that
they are doing a good job or what they can aim to improve.
Review the Activity:
1. The closing questions on the handout will summarize the students understanding of the
material. Asking students to elaborate on what we go over in class on the handout to
extend the learning done in class. Making it applicable to their lives so it is more
relatable to increase interest and make it tangible for them so they can continue to
make their own connections.

Method of Assessment:
1) To assess the students there will be grade on the handout completed during the lesson
that will tie into a project on the subject. The project will incorporate all that they have
learned in this lesson and tie it to a personal interest. The project will be a choice of
two: sport statistics or reaction times (a continuation). The project will be graded based
on a rubric as follows:
a) Topic choice explanation the students explanation of why their choice applies to
mean, median and range.
b) Topic data Students will need to have at least three sets of data of varying sources.
c) Calculations The accuracy of the students calculations will be checked by the
teacher when the project is handed in.
d) Professionalism The project should be handed in by the students in a timely manner
and neatly ordered in a presentable folder or packet format.
