2010 Michigan State Park
Permits Are on Sale
The Department of Natural Resource
announced today that the 2010
Michigan State Park Motor Vehicle
Permits are on sale for the same
price
as in 2009. The $24 permit provides
access for Michigan residents to 98
Michigan state parks and recreation
areas for the 2010 calendar year.
The resident annual permits may be
purchased on line from the Michigan
e-store at: www.michigan.gov/dnr
or at all state park locations.
“Recent news reports regarding the
proposed Recreation Passport have
caused some confusion,” said Ron
Olson, chief of the DNR Parks and
Recreation Division. “There is
legislation pending that would create

new Recreation Passport program
and eliminate the need for motor
vehicle
permits for Michigan residents. The
new program would allow residents
to pay an optional $10 park access
fee with their annual vehicle
registration. If the legislation is
adopted, it would take effect for
the 2011 season. State park visitors
will still need a motor vehicle
permit for the 2010 season.”

Arbor Day Mini Grants
Awarded
The Department of Natural
Resources today announced the
award of
$10,000 in grants to 50 Michigan
communities and organizations for
Arbor
Day activities. This grant program is
administered by the DNR’s Urban
Forestry program, with funding from
the USDA Forest Service, State and
Private Forestry. A list of this year’s
award recipients is
attached.
The purpose of the Arbor Day Mini
Grant program is to highlight Arbor
Day and the role that trees and
forests play in our everyday lives.
Grant recipients will receive up to
$200 in matching grant funds for
planting trees on public lands,
hosting an Arbor Day celebration, or
purchasing natural resource related
library materials. Grant projects
must be completed by June 30,
2010.
The nation’s first Arbor Day was
celebrated in Nebraska, on April 10,
1872. Its founder was J. Sterling
Morton, who had a love for trees that
he developed during his upbringing
in Michigan. Missing the vibrant
array of forests in Michigan, Morton
championed a tree planting holiday
in Nebraska, to replant trees that
were cleared for building materials
and fuel.
The first Michigan Arbor Day was
celebrated in 1885, and it has been
celebrated each year since, on the
last Friday in April. This coming
year, Arbor Day will be celebrated on
April 30, 2010.

Saturdays: Beasts of the 5th Sun,”
a game available on Wii, PS2,

Cartoon Network show.
