Course description: This is the first graduate course on DSP. The course covers selected topics
from chapter 1 through chapter 8 of the textbook. Chapter 1-4 will be reviewed which includes;
convolution, correlation, difference equations, stability and other properties for the discrete
signals and linear systems. The Z-transform, Fourier- transforms and their properties are
reviewed. Design of some simple filters using poles and zeros are also considered. The Discrete
Fouries Transform(DFT) and its computational methods(FFT algorithms) are discussed in chapter
5 and 6. Selected topics from Chapter 7 and 8 will cover filter realization methods & structures,
and some formal methods to the designof digital filters, specially the linear phase FIR filters.
Textbook: “DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING, Principles, Algorithms, and Applications”, 4th
Edition, by John G. Proakis, and Dimitris G. Manolakis, Prentice Hall 2007.
Supplementary book: “Discrete-Time Signal Processing”, 2nd Edition, by Alan V. Oppenheim
and Ronald W. Schafer and John R. Buck, Prentice-Hall, 1999.
Assignments: Coursework includes textbook problems and some small projects.
LabVIEW software package and tools will be introduced for use in the project
assignments. All assignments must be turned in by the due date. Late assignment will not
be accepted and will receive zero credit.
Exams: One midterm exam, one final exam, and random quizzes, Every exam must be taken by
every student. No exam should be missed. There will be no makeup exam. Date & Time of
Final Exam are set / shown by the UTD/EE Dept. course catalog. In-class quizzes may be given
during the lecture sessions.
Grading: Final course grade will be made of 3 equally weighted grades; (i) average grade of all
homework and project assignments, (ii) midterm exam grade plus quizzes, and (iii) final exam
grade.
Requirement: Please turn off and do not use your mobile phones, laptop, PDA, or other
personal electronic devices during the lecture seesions and exams. Use of any such devices
requires prior permission from the instructor.
