What Is the Job Description of a Merchant Mariner?
An American merchant ship captain is a licensed U.S. Merchant Marine master
mariner in command of a civilian or government-owned ship. These ships almost
always carry freight, since there is only one American-flagged cruise ship. The joy
of a life spent working at sea has offsetting factors for some, including long
absences from land -- between 260 and 365 days at a time.

Merchant ship captains can work worldwide. Their employment may range from operating ships for the
government to operating ships for exploration and oil service companies. Some work for research
organizations, such as the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute or Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Job Outlook
According to the BLS, the outlook is brighter for a captain than most other jobs. While BLS puts the growth rate
for most industries at 14.3 percent from 2010 to 2020, it projects the growth rate for water transportation
