A decision about what to do with Chuckles,

a Vietnamese potbelly pig, was made at the
Nov. 19 town council meeting, and it was a
decision that left the Dahl family smiling.
Its a step forward, I was getting nervous
there for a bit, and theres really nothing you
can do, people have to make the best educated decision they can, said Trevor Dahl.
I put my trust in the system and the decision was made, and for me it just goes to
show that if the right people are making the
decisions then the right decisions can get
made.
Chuckles had been removed from the familys home previously because having a pig
was not an allowable use under the Animal
Control Bylaw. After some discussion, and a
couple council meetings, an amendment was
created that would allow the family to keep
their beloved pig, who is also an emotional
support animal for their daughter Cassandra.
In drafting the attached amendment administration contacted Municipal Affairs to
inquire if a resolution to provide for an exception to the current Animal Control Bylaw
could be made. Municipal Affairs informed us
that a resolution would not be sufficient in
doing so, that an exception would have to be
made into the Animal Control Bylaw itself,
said Municipal Clerk Jennifer Sawatzky.
It would also not be appropriate to include
a provision in the bylaw for the Dahl family only. Municipal Affairs suggested that the
only possible change would be to include
an actual clause that would allow council to
grant an exception to any section of the bylaw if deemed appropriate.
We were warned though that this clause
could be challenged and that including this
type of clause defeats the purpose of having
a bylaw, said Sawatzky.
In the end administration brought forward
a clause that would allow for emotional support animals within the town boundaries.
In the bylaw an emotional support animal
will only be allowed if documentation is provided to the town that shows one, certification from a Canadian authority qualifying the
animal as an emotional support animal, said
Sawatzky.
Two, a letter from a licensed health professional indicating the individuals medical
need for an emotional support animal under
the referral of a medical doctor. Requirements
that pertain specifically to potbelly pigs have
also been added to the amendment.

Socktober a success!!
Community Crisis Society public educator Paul Thomas (back), receives donated socks of all
sizes and colours from Westmount Elementary School Grade 6 students Lacey Cove (front, l-r),
Halle Vermeeren and Kiernan Fisher at the Wheatland Shelter on Nov. 25. Three bins of socks,
like the one shown, were collected during Westmounts Socktober when students earned
points if they wore colourful and wacky socks and even more points if they donated socks.
Socktober was the brainchild of Halle Vermeeren, who sits on the nine member Student Government elected by students to come up with ideas to make their school better than it already is.

Strathmores new Chamber president

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Pamela Campbell is the new face at
the helm of the Strathmore and District
Chamber of Commerce, and she is excited to get the ball rolling.
Campbell is a marketing consultant
with Golden West Radio Station, and
one of her coverage areas has been
Strathmore.
Upon first arriving in Strathmore a
few years ago, armed with the intent
to meet people and start making connections, Campbell met Robert Breitwieser, vice-president of the Chamber,
for lunch as the first step.
By the time lunch was over, he had
invited her to join the Chamber as a
member, which she accepted.
It went from there to watching and
listening and seeing what was happening, what the board was doing and what
the Chamber was doing, and wasnt
doing. At that stage, I made a commitment because anything I choose to do
its either I give all or I dont do it, said
Campbell.
As you get to know me Im all about
community strength, I want to see
things grow, I want to see things get
better whether its community, business, families, the whole ball of wax.

I like to see things get bigger, better,

awesome.
The way I look at it is how can I
help? What can I do to make this better? These are questions I ask myself,
do I have enough experiences to help
with this? Yes.
Campbell has served as president in
other organizations, and through her
position as a marketing consultant she
has helped businesses big and small
find ways to meet their needs and
grow. She is also working hand-inhand with the executive director of the
High River Chamber, who is a member of the Alberta Chamber, which is
part of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Campbell said her connections
will help Strathmores Chamber grow
that much stronger and faster into the
direction they want to go.
The excitement I feel from it is fantastic, the board is excited which is
even better and the direction its going
is positively modern, said Campbell.
Were going to make this fantastic
and it wont be just me, because Im
part of a team and that team all has its
own strengths within it. So I am really
proud to be president of the Chamber,
I am even that much more proud to
be part of a team that I know is going
to move forward and succeed and help

ows know that enjoying professional

sports, especially hockey, can be tough
for many youth and their families.
Sometimes going to a special event
like a Calgary Flames hockey game
may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some of these youth. We are
happy to be a part of helping them to
feel special and support a school that
works hard and is making a difference
in Strathmore, said Coulter.
The tickets were presented to the
school on Nov. 19.
We were caught a little bit by surprise by this generous gift. Obviously
our first thought is a way to either recognize students or to give to students
who wouldnt have an opportunity to
get to an NHL game, said Kyle Larson,
associate principal for SHS.
We certainly have lots of kids who
come to mind, who are great kids that
just need a lift sometimes. Students are
our first focus, but its also nice sometimes to recognize staff who have gone
above and beyond too so we may use
them for staff as well at some point.

the businesses grow within the community.

The board has come up with a detailed, and pinpointed directive that
wont be announced until the first
week of December, and wont begin
until Jan. 1. Campbell said the directive
is about meetings, supports, and networking. It also answers the question
what do I get out of being a member
of the Chamber?

Spartans score Flames tickets

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

With the goal of supporting the
community, and rewarding deserving
youth, Lakewood Meadows has donated $3,690 worth of Calgary Flames
tickets, 10 pairs, to Strathmore High
School (SHS).
Skyscape Inc. represents the developer behind the new Strathmore lakefront community of Lakewood Meadows
We wanted to do something with
the tickets to help a most deserving
group of individuals in our community,
our youth, said Neal Coulter, of Skyscape Inc.
We discussed doing a contest, giveaway or an online promotion but ultimately we felt that a donation to the
high school would go a long way to
allowing the school itself to choose deserving students and staff who they felt
would benefit from the extra recognition. We know the high school will put
them to good use.

Strathmores Miss Universe Canada candidate

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Contributor

Bailee Simonin, 21, is hoping to be
crowned Miss Universe Canada in
the spring of 2015. Simonin has lived
in Strathmore her entire life, and has
worked as a waitress and manager at
Boston Pizza for seven years.
The Miss Universe Canada pageant
will be her first beauty pageant. She
also plans to compete in the Miss Calgary pageant, also being held spring of
2015.
For about the last year, year and a
half I have gotten into modeling and
then its kind of worked its way into
doing the pageant now, said Simonin.
She is represented by Patti Falconer
Agencies for her modeling, where she
also teaches a kids modeling class every Saturday.
It all began when Denis Devila, the
national pageant director from Toronto,
visited Pattis studio a couple weeks
ago. Any young women interested in
possibly being in the pageant were invited to attend and meet Devila for an
interview, and to basically audition.
It was about a week and a half later
when Falconer phoned Simonin to tell
her she was accepted.
Training will begin soon for the contestants with a representative from Toronto.
So they (will be) showing us runway,
turns, etiquette. We do a little bit of hair
and beauty, public speaking is a big
thing to do with it, said Simonin.
Theyre also really big into being
healthy and being fit, so theyre going to talk a little bit about that. We do
training right up until we go. Im excited, nervous but excited. I think that

your nerves are going to come along

with it obviously but I believe Im more
excited than I am nervous.
Each of the contestents in the pageant will be assigned a charity. Simonin
doesnt know yet what her charity will
be, but knows she plans to host something in Strathmore at the Legion, and
another event in Calgary.
There will be a bathing suit event,
evening gown, and a humanitarian part,
which is the charity, and the judges will
sit down and see what the contestant
has done. There will also be preliminary interviews with the judges. There
are 10 judges, and each contestant has
four minutes with each one. They will
answer a random question and they are
put on the spot to see how they handle
it.
The pageant starts with approximately 65 contestants, it then gets cut down
to the Top 20, then Top 10 and then the
Top 5.
Right now in preparation I am looking for sponsors to help sponsor me to
get me to Toronto, all the girls have to
come up with a bit of money for that,
said Simonin.
She has been going around town
dropping off packages, looking for
sponsors that will help with the cost of
sending her to Toronto and other fees
occurred with being in the pageant.
Whatever companies, or businesses
feel is comfortable with them or appropriate is fine, but that is my initial goal
is to get to $5,000.
Anyone wanting to help her with the
trip can contact her at baileesimonin@
gmail.com. Simonin will be in school
for upgrading in January before continuing on to get a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and business.

Strathmore resolves pig issue

Continued from Page 1

It was the best option, but there still
remain concerns that it will open the
doors to allow for many other different
types of animals in the town, should
they be considered emotional support
animals. If future requests come forward to council for emotional support
animals then further amendments will
need to be made to the Animal Control
Bylaw that are specific to each particular species.
I dont have a problem with this, I
do have a compassionate side of me as
I like kittens and teddy bears, but as a
town councillor I have to exercise my
common sense and judgment to come
up with a fair and reasonable decision
to vote on one way or the other, said
Councillor Rocky Blokland.
I strongly believe were heading into
uncharted waters with this and there
could be major repercussions in the future.
He did, however, agree with the conditions being proposed, and voted in
favour of the amendment, along with
the rest of council.
Dahl and his family were relieved as
they watched the motion pass. He had
a hand in helping with the bylaw, and
said Chuckles has been invited into
schools and different places around

town to help educate people about

pigs, and what it is like to own one.
Theyre an amazing pet, but theyre
not for everyone, theyre not a dog, they
are not a cat, they are a different type of
animal that needs to a different type of
person to take care of them, said Dahl.
Ive been given a chance here to
help educate people in Strathmore on
potbelly pigs so I would like to take
this chance to show people what kind
of pets they are and keep that education going, because if Strathmore has
given us this chance then we can use
this down the road in different municipalities . just to get people out of that
mindset that a potbelly pig, yes its a pig
but its not the same as the ones that get
raised on the farm and get turned into
bacon and pork chops, its a totally different animal.
Chuckles came home on Nov. 19,
happy to snuggle up with Cassandra in
her bed.

One of the best ways of preventing cancer caused
by smoking is to educate your children to never start.
Most people start to smoke in their teen years. Talk
to your children about all the health reasons why they
shouldnt smoke. Also, have them avoid secondhand
smoke which begs the question that if you smoke,
seriously consider stopping. Youll be doing your
children a big, healthy favour.

Nature continues to supply the sources and inspiration

for new drugs. The sweet wormwood plant supplies
the key ingredient for a drug called artemisinin which
is has been developed by the company, Sanofi, as an
antimalarial drug. The drug is manufactured semisynthetically using a special yeast that produces a
precursor to the drug. It allows more drug to be made
than from all-natural sources.
Good oral health is a lifetime job and it should start
early in life. It used to be the rule that every child
should be seen by a dentist by the age of 3 but the
Canadian Dental Association is recommending the
first visit should be earlier ..at the first birthday, Its
a good first step to reducing childhood cavities and
developing a lifetime of good oral health habits.

Strathmore RCMP are currently

18th at approximately 10:00 pm a

male took off on foot heading east

The world of labelling drug products is fraught with

words like plus, ultra and Extra Strength. There is no
real definition for what these words mean. Usually
it means more of the main ingredient or another

confusing sometimes. Read the labels carefully and if
in doubt, ask our pharmacists. Were always available

Langdon Tim Hortons opened its doors

on Nov. 21. The new store is located
near the Buy Low Foods, and features
modern accents, such as two USB ports
and a plug at every table. The baker is
also now located out front, just behind
the counter, so you can watch them as
they prep donuts or any of the other
goodies. Every employee that works
there is also local, with 31 out of the 34
from Langdon, and the other three travelling from Strathmore, and they always
will be according to the store owner. Chrystal McConnell and store owner Kevin Korpi, along with the
staff, had the coffee ready at 6 a.m. to greet the first customers. The official grand opening is Dec. 6.

Developing study skills

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Contributor

Learning how to study effectively
can be tough, especially in high school
when there are often many distractions
that need immediate attention.
On Nov. 19 Greg Markusson, with the
CanLearn Society, was in Strathmore
to teach a group of Strathmore High
School (SHS) students how to develop
study skills.
Markusson spoke about time management, creating a study plan, how to
study effectively, and memory tips, and
offered test-taking skills.
Its just one of the focuses that we
realized at Strathmore High School
that our students need those skills and
that our teachers are going to work on
developing those skills in class, said
school counsellor Karen Harris.

We just realized that kids dont know

how to study, and really how many of
us do know how to study, and we all
create our own study things that work
for us. We recognize that there are different learners and that different learners have different styles, so hes just
trying to present a broad range of this
might work for you, set it up.
These kids, theyre going to get
something out of it, they might not get
everything but theyre going to hopefully get one or two (tips) that they go
back and incorporate.
Harris said the ultimate goal is to
have the teacher organizing lessons so
that the study skills will both be encouraged, and facilitated.
Approximately 45 students attended
the session, which is higher than the
number that attended the test anxiety
session offered last year.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~John & Betty Huizinga

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
John Huizinga and Betty Kloostra were born in
Holland, and their Dutch Christian names were Jan
and Tetje, which they changed when they arrived
at Pier 21 in Halifax in 1952, with their respective
families.
Johns father and 12 siblings were dairy farmers
in Holland, so it was natural for them to purchase
farmland when they arrived in Ontario. Following
the Second World War, large numbers of immigrants
started arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax from countries
all over Europe, as there were no homes - indeed
for some, no countries - to return to.
The number of Dutch immigrants
was so high that the government of
the Netherlands restricted how much
money families were allowed to take
out of the country, in order to preserve
the Dutch economy. Many Dutch immigrants converted money into household goods to bring to Canada. It was a
memorable day in 1952 at the Customs
Dept. at Pier 21 in Halifax, when a prefabricated home was unloaded from a
Holland America liner. This two-storey
home belonged to Johns father, and
was unique as it came in sections, and
had to be put together when it arrived in Forrest,
Ont. where they had purchased farmland. The
main floor contained the kitchen, dining room and
front room, and there were four bedrooms upstairs.
It was easily put together, and the family moved in.
John was born in Holland in 1938, a twin, but his
twin sister died early on. He was the middle child
of 10 children. He completed grade school in Holland, then took night school when he reached Canada. He obtained a diploma for layout and drafting
at the University of Waterloo, followed by steel fabrication and welding, at Sarnia. He bought an old
blacksmiths shop with forge in Palmerston, Ont.
in 1968, providing welding services to a growing
community. They sold this business in 1976, and
moved to Calgary with their two sons. It was a new
adventure for all of them.
Betty was born in Friesland in Northern Holland,
where her parents also ran a dairy farm, right beside the dyke (sea wall) separating the North Sea
from the Zuider Zee. She was the third youngest of

a family of eight children, and took all her education after arriving in Ridgetown, Ont. Both families
continued as dairy farmers, but before they could
do very much, they had to go to school to learn the
English language - these were challenging times
learning a new culture.
Bettys parents also grew cash crops like tomatoes and cucumbers, fields of them, for H.J. Heinz
Co. This was what kept the children busy all summer!
John and Betty met at a church function in Forrest, Ont. in 1960, and were married in 1964, in
Wingham, Ontario. They had two sons, and now
have three grandchildren.
They moved to Calgary in 1975,
where Betty worked at Rockyview
Hospital and Colonel Belcher, and
John worked for Triangle Steel. In
1977, they moved to Campbell River,
B.C. where John had no problem obtaining employment as a steel fabricator. Betty worked for the Campbell
River Hospital as a support worker
in many areas, and during this time
took a two-year program from Athabasca College, and received her diploma for food and nutrition supervisor. In 1985, their boys were accepted
into the University of Calgary, so the
whole family moved to Strathmore. They now had
three sons, as Johns nephew came and lived with
them. John worked on many of the 1988 Winter
Olympic projects. He did all the layout for the bobsleigh run, and worked on the Olympic Oval, as
well as the buildings at Nakiska.
After the Winter Olympic Games, they returned
to Campbell River in 1989, where John worked for
Finning Canada until 1998, when they moved back
to Alberta, settling in Strathmore. They purchased
a four-bay warehouse with mini storage, and John
started a small welding shop in one of the bays,
and named it Country Air Holdings.
This business served the surrounding community
for the next eight years, and John enjoyed meeting
all his new customers, as well as attending chamber of commerce meetings.
In 2006, they sold the shop
to Stadco Steel Industries,
and moved on at a slower
pace, enjoying other adven-

tures. They opened My Secret Garden Bed and Breakfast

in Strathmore, and also opened an antique shop in Nanton,
called Special Things and More.
They are now fully retired and living in Strathmore. They attend The Alliance Church, and have made many friends there.
They wish to thank all the people who have supported them
in business and friendship over the past 16 years, and look
forward to what lies ahead. Being so close to the City of Calgary is wonderful, as they know they can come home to a
quieter life, and enjoy all the walking paths and parks in our
town.

2014 Strathmore

BY-ELECTION

Our question of the week is:

In your opinion what are some of the issues facing
Strathmore, and what do you think needs to be done to
correct those issues?
Want to ask the candidates questions? Attend the Chamber
of Commerce Forum being held on Dec. 2 at the Strathmore
Civic Centre at 7 p.m.

ALLAN AUGER
I believe that most of the issues that foremost in our minds during the last election are
still just as important a year later. The development of our commercial lands to help keep
taxes stable, parks and pathways in our new
developments and the funding and construction of a multi use facility for both Strathmore
and surrounding areas as well as the revitalization of the downtown core.
But there has been one issue that has risen to the forefront in
the last year and that is the treatment of our seniors not just in our
community, but also across the province as well. Seniors across
Canada are probably one of the largest lobbying groups in this
country and yet they seem to have lost their voice. No longer treated like the valuable resource they are but instead treated like a
commodity to be used for profit.
The closure of the Extended Care Unit to make way for offices
and the movement of those patients to a for profit facility. This facility makes millions of dollars a year while we as taxpayers still have
to pay the salaries of the health care workers who are employed
there.
Another issue that should concern local taxpayers is the lack
of any real supervision on any of the current projects underway
around town. When these new developments in Edgefield on the
east side of town and Lakeview on the Northwest are completed
the town will takeover a lot of new infrastructure that has not been
supervised as well as it should have.
Maybe the town should hire a projects manager or supervisor
to act in the towns best interests. For example, all we have to
do is look at the mess that Thomas Drive is in to see how costly
this could become in the future. Feel free to contact me at www.
facebook.com/allan.auger or comment on Strathmores Future on
Facebook. Thank you Allan Auger.

GLENN FREELAND
There are no issues that our
town has that a larger tax base
wouldnt eliminate, all issues from
infrastructure, recreation facilities,
development, leisure and wellness
can be addressed by the following
question how do we increase our
tax base?
This is a question that all governments at all levels struggle with, some more successful
than others. So we to look at successful towns and municipalities, we dont need to reinvent the wheel. Our
viability as a town is directly related to our tax base,
the more appealing our town is the more businesses
and people want to move here and the large our tax
base is.
Sounds simple doesnt it? Basic Economics 101 that
statement is the only simple part of the question.
We as a town need to have a sound and workable

Residents and businesses are
rightly concerned with Strathmores diminishing downtown
core, as we grow and expand
many businesses are opting to relocate to the newer eastern shopping area. The downtown has
many buildings in need of a facelift; businesses and landlords will
be encouraged to work together in revitalizing downtown. A committee has been formed and is actively
working towards resurrecting the downtown core;
Councilman Bob Sobol has been working with them in
this endeavor. I look forward to working with council to help bring vibrancy back to this area, attracting
residents to a bright, fun place to stroll, shop, and dine
before enjoying a movie.
Strathmores Industrial Park is now open to public
lease, attracting more business that is very beneficial to
our community in tax and lease revenue, and providing

All issues big or small are important, whether it be snow removal,

traffic concerns, policing, or development issues.
For many years W.I.D. (Western
Irrigation District) and the town
have been trying to work out the
proper disposal of our stormwaters. Improper disposal could be
an environmental issue as all water eventually ends
up into the Bow River. One of the ways to solve this
problem is to install storm ponds or settling ponds.
Currently, the older sub/divisions in town do not have
the infrastructure to handle storm waters and need the
installation of drainage ditches, storm ponds and or
settling ponds at an enormous cost to the taxpayer. In
recent years all new subdivisions have installed the
proper infrastructure to handle this issue.
Continuing with the concerns and care of our seniors, after all they built this community.
The empty hospital wing is a concern. We must con-

Strathmore is a rapidly growing community, as such there are

bound to be growing pains. There
are several areas that need to be
addressed. One such area is the revitalization of the downtown area.
Over the past few years I have
seen many businesses either close
up or move to the Ranch area. We
are seeing more and more vacant storefronts. This has
to be remedied soon. Co-op is on its way out now leaving another large vacancy in the downtown area. I for
one would like to see a big time overhaul. More condo
style shops with residential on the second level. Also
lets get back to or roots as a railway town, maybe try
and give main street a more historic rail town look.
Some thing like this could be done relatively cheap
with false fronts on the buildings and would attract
more people down to take a look and check out the
shops. Its not going to happen over night but with
the cooperation of the town, businesses and residents
we can make the downtown come to life with activity
again.

www.StrathmoreTimes.com

need to balance both. This is just one possible solution but one that all towns strive to achieve. We need
to promote, market and sell Strathmore as a destination for growth and prosperity. With a development
strategy consisting of possible tax concessions for new
development and a smooth permit process we can get
a reputation in the province that Strathmore is open
for business and that we will work with both companies and individuals to ensure that the process is quick,
smooth and cost effective. Our current Mayor, Council
and Town employees are working to achieve this.
Strathmore is located on the prime east/west transportation corridor that should be very appealing to
light industry development, the fact that our cost per
acre is lower than our friends in Okotoks and Airdrie
and our close proximity to the most economically vibrant city in Canada should be a selling point.
With a strong commercial and residential tax base
the positive spin-off to an upper middle class and a
higher per household income will ensure a viable tax
base and a higher quality of life for all Strathmore residents.

more opportunities for employment. This is a key area

that will improve Strathmores economic viability, thus
allowing for availability of more funds for other areas
of concern.
Recreation has been a huge topic of late, I agree that
we can do more; I think smaller less costly recreational
solutions, that can potentially support themselves, are
more in line with economic prudence. We run a significant deficit on our current amenities; I believe that selfsufficient plans are prudent at this time over multi-use
mega arenas. I have worked in conjunction with other
councils in past years to create viable teen activities
that I look forward to bringing to the table.
As your voice in Town Council, I will always be available for comments, questions, conflict resolution and
guidance by phone, e-mail, Facebook, Canada Post and
in person. I welcome and encourage dialogue from all
residents, patrons and visitors.
I ask for your support and vote on Dec. 8 or 15.
I look forward to serving as a voice of reason on
your town council.

tinue to pressure the current Provincial Government to

insure they adequately develop this wing into a proper
functional area with more beds or enlarging our triage
area.
Continuous upgrading of our streets and sidewalks,
including the very old sewer and water pipes in the
older subdivisions are replaced as the streets are repaved.
There is a great need for more recreational facilities,
such as a multi-cultural library/sports complex. Now,
having said that, Im very concerned as to where the
monies will come from to build this project and maintain the operating costs afterwards, remembering this
is all tax payers expenses, which is a great concern
for me.
In closing, I am saying, I am willing to tackle all
these issues as I have the experience and knowledge
from being in this community for the past 37 years, by
serving on past council and numerous other committees. I can assure you that I will work with my fellow
councillors on getting these issues resolved for the betterment of the community at large.

Another key area I have seen that needs to be remedied is the lack of recreational facilities. As more and
more young families move to town there is more stress
put on our current facilities. For one, minor hockey
teams are having to take ice in the surrounding communities due to an extreme shortage in town. When
the arena was built here it was great and still is, but our
population has doubled since then and we havent added any sheets of ice. Ice surface is not the only area we
are short. As our community has grown the rec facility
side has kind of fell behind, we now have to play catch
up. I understand that we are not going to be building a
giant state of the art rec-plex tomorrow but we do have
to start doing the work to get it going. I feel that having
places families can get together and enjoy activities together develops a feeling of community which in turn
leads to people doing more local business and shopping therein boosting the towns economy. Of course
this all costs money to first build then to operate and
maintain. I feel however with some careful planning
and the support of the community this can be accomplished. Any other questions I can be reached at jason_pollo82@hotmail.com also checkout and like my

The Federal Gas Tax fund

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Times Reporter

Our Conservative Government has just completed the renewal of the agreements with the
Provinces and Territories regarding the federal
Gas Tax Fund and the final payments for the 2014
year are flowing to each province and territory.
As your Member of Parliament, I can underline
for you the importance of this money to every
community throughout our large and mainly rural riding. Local officials rely on this funding for
many community projects both large and small.
In 2014, our Crowfoot riding received more than
$10.4 million.
The Gas Tax Fund is important to me because
it was the Conservative Party as the Official Opposition who called on the Liberal government of
the day to return the revenue to the jurisdictions
where it was raised. We maintained that it was not
fair for communities that paid a larger amount of
these taxes (e.g. remote and rural communities

that use a great deal of gasoline for transportation

and working the farm) to have this money spent
in neighbouring larger metropolitan and urban
locations. We understood the importance of these
revenues to even the smallest communities.
Shortly after forming government in 2006, we
made significant improvements to the Gas Tax
Fund. It has been extended, doubled, indexed
and made permanent. This has made a remarkable difference to the municipalities all across our
riding. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities continues to laud our efforts. We made the
Gas Tax funding more predictable, we provide
the funds earlier in the calendar year, and we increased the amount of funding returned to the region where it was raised. That was our campaign
promise and we delivered.
Along with the new agreements with the provinces and Territories, we can continue to support
local public infrastructure. At close to $22 billion,
the renewed federal Gas Tax Fund is the largest
component of the New Building Canada Plan and

the largest long-term federal commitment to investing in

Canadas public infrastructure in our nations history.
The Gas Tax Fund flows directly to municipalities to support local infrastructure priorities, including: safer roads,
improving access to clean drinking water, supporting community energy systems, mitigating disaster, and helping
with the management of wastewater or solid waste.
The federal Gas Tax Fund is more flexible than ever before and is making a difference in our communities. It provides predictable, stable and long-term investments into our
hometowns. For more information about the federal Gas
Tax Fund visit: http://www.infrastructure.gc.ca/plan/gtf-fteeng.html.

More to be done on property rights

JASON HALE MLA
Strathmore-Brooks

Premier Prentice campaigned on fixing property rights.
Wildrose members, like most Albertans, were
hopeful he would.
After all, landowners have watched their rights
erode under legislation like Bill 36, the Alberta
Land Stewardship Act, and Bill 24, the Carbon
Capture and Storage Act.
Prentice promised to consult with property
rights advocates and turn in a landmark bill Bill
1 that would fix this issue.
On Nov. 17, Bill 1 the Respecting Property
Rights Act fell flat when it was introduced to the
Legislature. It left property rights advocates, as
well as my colleagues and I, disappointed.
Bill 1 is just seven words long and it pledges to do nothing except repeal Bill 19, the Land
Assembly Project Act, legislation that has never
even been utilized because it has never been proclaimed.
While eliminating Bill 19 is a victory for Albertans, Bill 1 fails to address several of the real issues landowners are dealing with.
Under Bill 1, problematic bills like Bill 36, the
Alberta Land Stewardship Act and Bill 24, the Carbon Capture and Storage Act remain unscathed.
This is not what landowners were asking for.

We in the Wildrose recognize that if we are

going to make significant progress on property
rights, its up to us to do the heavy lifting.
Thats why Wildrose has proposed a bold, new
idea that will be impossible for Mr. Prentice or
his government to deny, if in fact theyre serious
about restoring real property rights in Alberta.
On Nov. 24, we introduced Motion 501, a legislative motion that will be the first step in entrenching Alberta landowner rights in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Lethbridge MP Jim Hillyer is introducing a similar Motion in Ottawa. He will ask parliament to
support the same principle: to amend the Charter
to enshrine property rights for Albertans.
If the Alberta Legislature, the House of Commons, and the Senate all pass this motion, the
result would be that any current or future Alberta
government could no longer take actions under
any law to diminish the value of property without
fairly compensating landowners, as those common sense rights would be enshrined in the Charter Canadas highest law.
This kind of positive change is possible and
critical for advancing property rights here in Alberta.
The fact is, supporting this motion should not
be about partisanship, it should be about doing
what is right for Alberta.
I look forward to hearing from you any time.

two possible risk factors, examples being: income level,
lack of prenatal care, previous low birth weight, inadequate diet, poor pregnancy
weight, low education, smoking, substance abuse, lack of
social support, or first baby
in Canada. GO provides services during the prenatal
stages through birth until the
baby is nine months old.
GO is primarily funded by
the Public Health Agency of

provide enough support for
the programs full operations.
The lack of funding makes it

many community partners.
The program has a strong

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Horrible house update

To the Editor
I am writing to give the people of Strathmore an
update on residence 901 Briar Crescent. The Strathmore Times had previously written an article about
our situation (November 2013). This is will describe
the conditions, how my family is coping and what the
future holds.
We have lived in the house for over three years now.
There are still electrical issues, plumbing, structural
and heating issues with the home. Breakers are blowing, light bulbs breaking due to wiring issues. Pipes
freeze up multiple times during the winter months we dont know if they will last another season before
something dramatic happens.
The roofing situation on the addition, which isnt
at the appropriate angle to give adequate attic space,
still hasnt been resolved. The heating is five to eight
degrees colder from one side of the house compared
to the other. These are harsh conditions to raise a
family in.
Two summers ago my family had left to start a new
life in Bow Island without all the stress the property
has provided. This tears a father apart inside when

1ST ANNUAL

you cannot provide a safe and comfortable environment for your family. They are back though even with
the stress looming over our heads. My girls wanted
to go to school with their friends and we still believe
Strathmore is a great community to raise a family.
They now share a room on the warmer side of the
house since my eldest cant sleep in her old room due
to the cold. We are in constant fear that something
drastic will happen with the house. This environment
has influenced our family mentally and physically. We
hope that we can keep everything together till the
situation has been resolved.
After three years of discussions with lawyers, contractors, boards, councils, municipal affairs, municipalities, consumer reporters and MLA offices we still
dont really know where we stand. Have no idea what
our future holds when it comes to this property. We
have fought for our future as a family and are fighting
for the future of other families so they will never be
put into this situation.
From a father and a husband,
Chris Strauss,

Johnson training for Parapan Am Games

SHANNON LECLAIR

Times Reporter

Cory Johnson, a five-time Canadian track and field record
holder, has been working towards a new goal over the past
year and a bit. He is aiming to be the soccer goalkeeper in
the 2015 Parapan Am Games in Toronto.
Two years ago, while working at Kamp Kiwanis, a member of the Cerebral Palsy (CP) Association of Alberta had
told Drew Ferguson, head coach for the national Para-soccer
team, about Johnson. The pair was introduced and discussed
the possibility of Johnson playing soccer for Team Canada.
At the time I hadnt played soccer since junior high and
that was about 20 years ago. So I started training and he
asked me to train as a goalkeeper, he said.
Johnson hired a private coach, and in April of this year he
went to a training camp in Victoria. Ferguson was impressed
at the progress and invited Johnson to the national training
camp in August.
At that training camp I did so well that the goalkeeper
coach actually thought I was ready to be a back-up for Team
Canada, after one year of training, said Johnson.
Ferguson wasnt as sure and decided to have Johnson wait
and train for one more year.
The way the Para-soccer team works is it consists of different levels of players and disabilities. Some are players with
brain injuries, some of whom have played major league soccer. The second category is people who have had strokes,
and the third is people with CP. There are then three different categories within CP, based on whether one limb, two
limbs or all limbs are affected. Johnson falls into the category
of having all limbs affected.
Johnson said in his category (CP5) there are not a lot of

Strathmore Para-athlete Cory Johnson is in training to be goalkeeper in the

Parapan Am Games in 2015. He also hopes to make it to the Paralympics
for soccer. Two time gold medalist Carla MacLeod, (l-r) Cory Johnson and

people that are really athletic and can compete for that spot.
Often they are made goalkeepers, though starting next year
the rules will state that there has to be a CP5 on field, so he
may end up on field as well.
Johnson recently received an e-mail that the Government
of Canada, through the Athlete Assistance Program, will card
him. Each month he will be given money to help pay for his
training, and he will have access to all of the resources and
therapies at the University of Calgary and WinSport.
The goal is to train to be the number one goal keeper next
summer, and next summer is the Parapan Am Games and its
in Toronto, so it would be a huge opportunity, said Johnson.
If I never make it to the Paralympics, at least if I make
that tournament I can wear the Canadian flag in front of our
hometown fans in Toronto.
In the spring he will find out if he has met his goal.
To be able to go from not playing soccer for a long time,
to being carded took a lot of work, but as a motivational
speaker thats what I teach is how to remove the obstacles in
our mind that stop us from achieving our goals, said Johnson.

Staying warm this winter

Ms. Kavanaughs Grade 5 class at Sacred Heart Academy has been working hard to collect warm coats and clothing to help the Strathmore and
District Community Coats program. The donations will go directly to the
Christmas Hamper Society, where they will be distributed to those who
need to be kept extra warm this year. Each grade at Sacred Heart Academy
spends time and prayers on a good works project, this helps develop their
strong beliefs in giving.

The RCMP are recruiting, and theyre looking for women
interested in law enforcement to attend a Women in Policing career presentation in Calgary on Dec. 1.
I think if theyre interested in a career in law enforcement
it is a good opportunity for them to go and find out about it,
and to learn from other women that have experienced it and
gone through and done it, said Strathmore detachment Staff
Sgt. Kevin Reilly.
Currently 25 per cent of the members at the detachment
are female.

RCMP recruiting women to join the ranks

Were always recruiting, were like most people nowadays
where were looking for a few good people, said Reilly.
This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the first women officers training to become RCMP members. It began with
a 32-member female troop in 1974, which has led to nearly
4,000 female members today.
Those who attend the presentation will learn about the
more than 150 different types of opportunities in the force,
and hear from women who have donned the uniform. A recruitment officer will also be on hand to help answer questions, and explain the process.
The presentation will be held at the RCMP Duncan Building, 7575 8 St. N.E., Calgary beginning at 6 p.m. To preregister to attend the presentation, call either 403-699-2440
or 780-412-5488.
To apply for the RCMP you must be a Canadian citizen,
19-years-old, or older, of good character, proficient in English or French and possess a high school diploma or the
equivalent. You must also be willing to relocate anywhere in
Canada, have a valid drivers license, meet the medical/psychological/vision standards and be physically fit. For more

Promise with Little Red Wagons for their efforts to make the community a better place for
youth at a luncheon on Nov. 18. On hand to
receive the awards were Lynn Walker from the
Wheatland FCSS (l-r), Rachel Dick-Hughes of

Alberta Promises helps Strathmore youth

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Albertas Promise is a province-wide organization that wants to make partnerships with groups
around the province to invest more into helping
youth from a young age in their communities.
Strathmore partners were recognized at a Nov.
18 luncheon for assisting youth in the community
with a Little Red Wagon, which has been Albertas
Promises symbol for businesses to work together
to benefit Alberta kids.
Albertas Promise partners with organizations
like the Youth Club of Strathmore, and others including, the Town of Strathmore. We try to raise
awareness of local childrens needs, said Cristina
Cernucan, Communications representative for Albertas Promise. So the Youth Club is doing some
incredible programming, we wanted to raise their
visibility locally to showcase the amazing programs we have for kids. Those needs we have in
the community seem to be additional resources for
kids needing after school programs.
The Youth Club offers a range of different programs for ages six to 17, such as homework clubs,

drop-in science labs, sports groups, leadership

groups and cooking lessons. These are meant to
give a young child a higher self esteem and positive interactions.
Many community groups feel as though that
there is an insufficient amount of support services
and that is why through Albertas Promise, they
want to offer mentorship programs to help create
positive interactions.
The Youth Club has been discussing with some
agents locally to try and get a resource worker
and were trying to raise
awareness
that. There

needs to be additional resources locally for kids
who dont fit in the traditional programs that are
already offered, said Cernucan. Today we invited
community leaders from across Strathmore, many
of them are partners, some of them are new organizations that are hoping to support the initiative.
At the end of the session we want to recognize
the organizations that are doing amazing things
for kids.
The Albertas Promise is continuing to provide
support for the youth and hopes to get more community organizations to join this initiative to provide a more positive environment for kids.

ris Ertman identified the key images

wardrobe, lamppost, stone table and
talked about how they could use those
images to tell the story.
They asked each other, what if the
wardrobe could revolve?
And that idea evolved into using the
stone table as the basis of all the scenes.
Johnston made a detailed scale model, which he and Ertman used to assess
how well the idea would work, and
then they turned it over to the carpenters and scenic artist.
The revolving stone table is manually
operated by an Assistant Stage Manager
below stage, in two-way communication with the stage manager.
He has a series of handles and a
brake to stop it at the right stop, and a
series of markers, Johnston explained.
Brad (Graham, stage manager) gives
him cues and he revolves according to
those cues.
To me, the revolving table is simply a
fascinating and clever way to transform
the wardrobe into Narnia, but Johnston
pointed out that it does much more it
allows the action to continue without
stopping for scene changes.
Its an incredibly elaborate choreography that he (Ertman) was in charge
of, Johnston said, moving all these 22
people around on stage, and also creating beautiful stage pictures all the way,
and making sure that the action flows
seamlessly.
All of their creative talent and hard
work have produced a beautiful show,
telling a heart-warming story. If you
love C.S. Lewis classic book, youll love
what Rosebud has done with the story.
Tickets would make great Christmas
gifts, including for children, if they can
sit through the two-and-a-half hour
show. Tickets are 70 per cent sold, so
reserve soon. Call 1-800-267-7553 or go

Rosebud Theatre presents the spectacular Canadian premiere of the musical, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe until Dec. 20.
With a huge cast and live musicians,
beautiful colours, lighting and costumes, this show overflows the stage of
Rosebuds Opera House. The music
piano, harp, trumpet, flute, violin and
voices helps carry the story, rather
than being imposed on it. And the music is memorable. Today, two days after
the show, Im still singing the closing
song.
Neil Kuefler, Heather Pattengale, Cassia Schramm and Conrad Belau play
Peter, Susan, Lucy and Edmund, and I
wonder why Morris Ertman cast these
adults when there are so many Rosebud School of the Arts students and
recent graduates whose youthfulness
would have required less suspension of
our disbelief. Nevertheless, these four
do a great job. Belau (Edmund) is especially convincing, and as Ive come to
expect from him, he draws all my attention and interest whenever he appears.
David Snider as Tumnus and the Professor, Marie Russell as the housekeeper and Mrs. Beaver, and Andrew Legg
as Mr. Beaver are all hilarious and endearing, and Glenda Warkentin is just
right as a sharp-tongued and imperious White Witch. Michael Dobbin is a
winsome, loving Aslan, although hes
surprised by his power rather than as
confident as I envision him after reading the book.
The set fascinates me, and Im especially impressed by how the wardrobe
door is on a revolving table, transforming into Narnia. Lauchlin Johnston, set
and lighting designer, told me how he
developed it. First, he and director Mor-

Road-weary Bisons
back home
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons took to the ice with the Strathmore Minor Hockey Associations Atom A Storm team on Nov. 24 at the Strathmore Family
Centre. The Bison players will participate in novice, atom and peewee practices until January which will teach the young players how to
improve on the basic fundamentals of the game.

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The UFA Bisons are teaming up
with Strathmore Minor Hockey Association for a second year as they
will be involved with novice, atom
and peewee practices by teaching
the kids the fundamentals of the
game.
Bisons general manager Wayne
Hansen is grateful to see the players be mentors for the younger
kids.
One of the reasons that actually were doing the skate with the
(young players) is its easier for our
boys and for the coaches, that the
players will be attached to their
team (and) for them to see what
Dans trying to get across to be
taught, said Hansen.
The Bisons will be expected to
bring some of their knowledge
from what they have learned from
practice to game situations.
We thought itd be a good idea
to have our guys on the ice with a
group of players and we would run
them through whats called station
practices. If you watch top minor
hockey coaches run practices, is
that everything you do has a purpose from the time you step on the

ice whatever drill that youre doing,

youre going to continue to add to
that and by the end of the practice
its going to be almost a game-like
situation, said Hanson.
This will give the chance for the
players interact with one another
on the ice and also to give back the
community.
Its a way for our kids to give
back to the community, its a part of
their leadership curriculum at the
school, (and) a part of the sports
performance program that their
involved in at the school, said
Hansen.
At the end of the day, a lot of
these kids look up to the Bisons.
Its good for our guys to get out
there and get the feel for what
thats all about because when they
go to junior thats going to be expected of them.
One of the adjustments from last
year to this year was that the Bison
players needed a clear understanding of what they are supposed to
be doing on the ice.
Our kids didnt have a clear understanding of what they should
be doing on the ice and they dont
want to go in there and be disruptive. One of the things that minor
hockey suggested this year was

maybe have the boys do a drill and

run it every time they come out,
said Hansen.
Were giving them the tools to
learn. So those that want to will accept it, there might be something
in there that makes it click to one
of those kids and if that happens
thats a great day.
Bisons captain and Strathmore
native Shane Fraser is glad to be
giving back to his hometown hockey roots.
Its pretty nice to know youre
are helping out with these kids
to get better at hockey, you never
know what theyre going to end up
being someday, to know you can
be a part of that its pretty cool feeling, said Fraser.
Obviously I spent quite a few
years playing here. So seeing these
kids reminds you of yourself somewhat.
The young players look up to the
Bisons a lot in the hockey community, and Fraser can relate to the excitement the kids feel having their
idols on the ice with them.
I always remember coming to
the games just knowing that feeling could be you one day and its a
great feeling nowadays that it came
true, said Fraser.

NOV. 22 VS
CALGARY ROYALS

Come Cheer On Your UFA Bisons!

The UFA Bisons are a very exhausted club

after playing four games in seven nights.
They were able to beat one of the top teams,
the Calgary Buffaloes, 3-1 on Nov. 19 and were
just worn out in this past Saturdays game as
they were defeated 4-1 by the Calgary Royals.
In the Wednesday game I thought we
played really well and did a lot of good things,
so we had success in that game, said head
coach Dan MacDonald. We used the body
way better than we have all year and finished
our checks better.
Goal scorers were Gary Haden, Markus Lavallee and Kyle Gordon versus the Buffaloes.
In the Saturday game, it just came down to
our fourth game in seven nights on the road
and it got the best of us I think, especially in
the first period, he said. We didnt play well
in the first period, our guys were playing tired
and so we didnt come out as a strongly as we
usually do and it showed.
We missed the net an awful lot on some
good chances that we had and I think thats
just fatigue. Were still a pretty young team,
that was a tough part of our schedule so were
glad its over with and we can regroup for next
week.
Despite not having their normal energy levels against the Royals, the Bisons were still
able to give an honest effort.
We had one bad period and then after that,
we worked hard but we didnt have any real
finesse to our game because of our fatigue and
just making plays we dont normally make.
We gave it a way a few times, we gave up the
blue line when we dont normally do that and
played a different style of game because of exhaustion, said MacDonald.
Haden scored the goal in the loss against
the Royals.
What made matters worse for the Bisons
was that both the Buffaloes and the Royals are
top teams in the division.
The Buffaloes are leading our division in
the south and the Royals are second. So those
are tough teams and its tough to play them
when youre coming off the road from Lloydminster and Sherwood Park, said MacDonald.
The Bisons play at home this weekend when
they take on the Calgary Flames (8 p.m.) on
Nov. 28 and then the St. Albert Raiders (5:15
p.m.) on Nov. 29. Both games will take place
at the Strathmore Family Centre.

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Kings are in higher
spirits after sweeping both of their
games on Nov. 21 with a hard-fought
2-1 road win in Stettler and a 6-3 win
over High River at home the following
day.
I think it reflects the character we
have in that room, we werent happy
as a group with how we played (last
weekend) and we took (this) weekend
to try make things right, said head
coach Jeremy Blumes.
In a fast-paced game against High
River, the Kings were able to establish
a physical presence and sustain pressure in both ends of the ice.
I think the first 5-10 minutes we were
feeling out High River and as soon as
we were moving the puck quickly and
skating quickly they had a tough time
containing us. Sebastian (Turgeon) is a
perfect example of (making) a good
pass, driving the puck wide and beat
the defender with his natural ability,
said Blumes. When you put together
20-25 guys and then there is players
coming in and out of the line up, it
takes a little while to build chemistry
and I think that guys are starting to
understand their roles and being able
to play to their strengths.
Blumes felt his team took the right
approach into both games and positive

results showed.
I think we had a good approach.
We remained patient and positive on
the bench, there was a belief that even
when High River scored that third
goal, that there was not much of a sag
on the bench, said Blumes.
Give that High River team some
credit, I think they have a lot of guys
on there that work hard and are gritty.
First star of the game Sebastien Turgeon, who had a three-point night,
thought his speed and the support he
had on his line were factors in his performance.
This weekend we came out a little
bit harder in the first period. I think
were starting to pick it up out there,
our third period is where we are shining, said Turgeon. I think my speed
has been very beneficial in the way I
have been playing and definitely Jonesy made me a nice pass on the second
goal.
Turgeon led the way with two goals,
while Keenan Ogle, Justin Kostiuk,
Matt Thomson and Brayden Beckley
got one apiece.
In Stettler, it was Brady Bruneau and
Kirby Ruzesky that scored in the win.
The Kings will take to the road on
Friday, Nov. 28 when they take on the
Cochrane Generals (7:30 p.m.) and
Nov. 29 when they host the Ponoka
Stampeders (8:15 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Ladies open ringette

provides fun atmosphere
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Ice open ladies ringette team is always looking for fun,
energetic players to play in a competitive league.
I see the potential of all the parents
in our community, so I kind of felt I
wanted to have a team. We just threw
the word out and we got a good response, said Kim Proust, team organizer. So we had a team last year, we
could not get into a league (as) we got
organized too late. We played as many
teams from Calgary as we could just to
kind of see where we would fit.
The team has different mixture of
players that start at age 18 and go up.
We have a variety of players, players that have never skated before, that
have played (and ones that) coached
hockey, said Proust. Its a really good
group of ladies. We went into the Wom-

ens Ringette Association of Calgary

(WRAC) league and were in the D
pool. The teams that are in that league
are from Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, Indus and Chestermere.
Proust wants to emphasize that the
league is fun more than anything and a
way to socialize with other moms that
have kids in the sport.
A lot of people on the team have
more than one daughter that are in the
sport or in hockey as well. So if we can
find an hour a week to get together, its
quite lovely, said Proust.
The ladies team plays all their home
ice times on Friday night from 7-8 p.m.
at the Rockyford arena.
The schedule also consists of games
in Chestermere on Monday nights,
Airdrie on Sunday nights and Cochrane
on Tuesday nights.
They are tentatively trying to get
moms out to a try-it session sometime
after Christmas.

Clinic raises funds

for local pony club
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Equestrian Centre
held a horse-riding clinic on Nov. 22-23
at the facilitys arena.
The proceeds from the two-day clinic
will go towards the member riders of
the Wheatland County Pony Club for
events during the season.
The riders, who were young and old,
were being taught by one of the countrys renowned high jump horse riders,
Cathy Inch.
Im originally from Ontario (and) I
was looking at trying to do something
for the pony club and thought of a
clinic and the easiest way I could think
of was to go back to Ontario (roots)
because I havent been here that long,
said Cathy Boddington, clinic organizer.
Riders of the club were thrilled to
have an ambassador come in and expand their knowledge of the sport.
Its a lot of riding skills, basics for
structure, position, patience. Instead of

making the horse do something, she

makes you work with it, said Heather
Maskell, owner of the Equestrian Centre barn.
Riders also got a chance to experience a different angle of coaching.
Its mainly set up for the Wheatland
Pony Club as a fundraiser. It helps the
participants because it gives them a
different educational experience so
they can learn from a different coach,
so they can add to their repertoire of
riding abilities, said Boddington. Proceeds will help with the different pony
club programs that are run through all
the province and throughout the year.
So they have things like the quiz, rally
and some competitions.
The clinic provided more confidence
and life skills between the rider and
the horse.
It does foster relationships that continue on into life. It gives them leadership skills assertiveness, and self-confidence, said Boddington.
She said if all goes well they would
like to hold another clinic in the spring.

CELESTE PIRIE

The Gleichen Gunners Pond Hockey program
chose to honour Remembrance Day by collecting
items for the Veterans Food Bank. It was a meaningful way for the program to honour their own
past as well as current veterans.
The Gunners derive their name from their original sponsors, the 22nd Battery of the RCA, which
later became the Southern Alberta Light Horse.
The Armed Forces sponsored hockey in Gleichen from 1922-1930, but a strong sentimental
connection remains. Players, coaches and their
families in 2014 are just as proud to wear the

Gunners jersey as they were in the past.

Its a small gesture of gratitude for all the men
and women who have stepped up to protect and
preserve our freedoms, states Gleichen Minor
Hockey President Cara Sheppard. We get our
name from the Forces and our coaching coordinator is a volunteer for the Veterans Food Bank in
Calgary so it was a natural fit.
The Gleichen Pond Hockey Program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Gleichen Arena. Nearly
100 kids ages 4-17 from Gleichen, Strathmore and
surrounding area take part. New registrations are
always welcome. For more information please
contact Cara Sheppard at 403-734-3515 or check
out their Facebook page.

the scoreboard for all but
a three minute span in the

second period.
The team was up early
Saturday for a 7:15 contest
against Spruce Grove. Again
the team came out flying.
Strong play by the opposing
goalie kept the game close
for a while, but when the Ice
started scoring they couldnt
be stopped. They went on to
a 10-2 victory in a penaltyfilled affair.
Next up was the undefeated host team from Sherwood
Park. Both teams were guaranteed a spot in the gold
game on Sunday with their
3-0 records. The Ice played
a strong game from start to
finish and ended up with a
6-2 win. Erin Reynolds (supported by a strong defence)
had a good day in net allowing two goals in each game.
Sundays final had the
team and fans dreaming of
a gold medal after going 4-0
in the round robin. The host
team had other ideas and
came out hard scoring early
and late in the first period to
take a 4-2 lead. An early goal
in the second saw the hosts
go on to an 8-3 win. Though
disappointed in the final,
the overall experience of the
tournament was great. Many
players took their game to a
new level, and the team really came together over the
weekend.

It was a busy weekend for the Strathmore U12A Black Ice ringette team.
On Saturday, Nov. 22 they hosted the Calgary NW Nightmare. The Black
Ice found themselves down 4-1 at the start of the second period but
fought back to a thrilling 4-4 tie! On Sunday, Nov. 23 the team traveled
to Rolling Hills for two games against the Medicine Hat Mustangs. The
girls kept it close in Game 1 but the Mustangs netted a few quick ones
in the end to win 7-4. The Black Ice girls came out flying in the second
game and never looked back winning Game 2 by a decisive 5-1 victory.

Cordes hopes final season is memorable

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore volleyball player Rhiece
Cordes is hoping that she will provide
a leadership role in her fifth and final
year with the Calgary-based 403 Selects.
She has played in some very competitive volleyball tournaments south of the
border, and is really looking forward to
one in Las Vegas this year.
Ive been playing there since U14,
its been a lot of fun and I have met
a lot of cool girls. Weve done a lot of
traveling, been to San Francisco twice,
and this year were going to Las Vegas,
said Cordes. I trained with the national
team in Winnipeg and the Team Canada
coach, so that was pretty cool.
She has really flourished with the opportunities that have been presented to
her through volleyball and having the
ability to listen to her coaches.
My coach last year really said I was
a hard worker, so I just tried to work
hard and be a coachable athlete. Something Ive learned since U14 is coaches
are looking for is someone that listens
to them, thats what Ive been recognized for, said Cordes.
The Grade 12 Holly Cross Collegiate
student has her preferred positions on
the court, but can fill-in on others if
necessary.
I play left side in school, and then I
play right side in club, either or Im
versatile that way, said Cordes.
Since Cordes has been with the club
so long she hopes to be a source of motivation for other teammates and help
them adjust on the court.
Every club is an adjustment, so I kind
of help the girls adjust to 403. I hope to
be a leader, but at the same time, I play
with lots of leaders too, said Cordes.
Its always good to get pointers from

other players as well. Thats the thing

about club atmosphere, is players are
so strong, its a lot of fun to play with
girls that are really committed and everyone can feed off of each other.
The most important thing she has
learned in five years with the 403 Selects team is that you learn from your
mistakes and move on quickly.
Volleyball is a game of mistakes and
so you have to learn from your mistakes
and move forward quickly in order to
adjust to the situation, said Cordes.
This year in school and in club, if I
made a mistake and I start to get down
on myself, that creates bad habits for
myself and the team. So Ive learned
that you have to make a mistake and
stay positive.
Cordes is hoping to experience the
provincial tournament again this year
and get a chance at the final for the
second year in a row.
Im sure were hoping to be within
the Top 3 at provincials, thats usually
our goal, so Id really like to experience
that again and to be able to compete
in the Vegas tournament, said Cordes.
She has noticed that there are some
adjustments between playing club and
school volleyball.
The biggest difference for me is
that when I play school, I am one of
the bigger leaders, so there is a lot of
players that look up to me and Im the
center of attention there, said Cordes.
So I really need to watch the way I approach other players and just try to be
encouraging towards them, but in club
I can always look to other players.
Her most memorable moments was
competing in the San Francisco tournaments, both playing and bonding with
the team.
In my U16 year, we went to San
Francisco and there was this amuse-

make the tournament. We finished one

win and two losses (all in three sets) in
the round robin, said Reinhart. During the quarterfinals we played Three
Hills and beat them in three sets. In the
semi-final, we lost in three sets to Prairie Christian Academy and we lost the
bronze medal game to Oilfields High
School in three sets (the final set 14 16).
As for the girls, they were knocked
out in the quarterfinals in their zone
tournament in Carstairs.
We made it to zones in Carstairs after we finished second at regionals,
said coach Josh Jalbert.
He added that his younger players
did step up when called upon.
At zones, we played strong as a team
and our young players really stepped
up to the occasion. Unfortunately, we
couldnt get past Three Hills in the

girls convinced me to go on this ride
and it goes around in a circle and you
come up right over the ocean, usually
I dont like spinney rides and this one
was definitely worth it, we were laughing and laughing, said Cordes.
(On the court), last year I was working on my line shot and it took me all
season to really perfect it and at provincials it was an important cross-over
game. I got a really important point
with my line shot and I just remember
being so happy.
She would recommend if you want to
play club volleyball to stay positive and
to realize that there are players that are
better than you at something.
Its important to focus on your own
talents and do it to how you know it,
said Cordes.
Her future in competitive volleyball
is completely up in the air right now,
but if she were to get a scholarship, she
would continue to play at a highly competitive level.
She wants to study psychology as an
undergrad and then attend law school.

Hawks show valiant efforts at zones

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks senior volleyball teams competed hard
for every point at the season-ending
zone tournaments.
Senior boys coach John Reinhart
could not be more proud of his players
despite having a short bench in Three
Hills.
The boys played hard, fought
through fatigue and worked very well
as a team. I was extremely proud to
have coached this group of boys and
I am looking forward to next season,
said Reinhart.
The team was shorthanded and still
managed to take all their matches to a
third set, including a game against the
top team in the tournament.
We only had seven boys that could

quarterfinals, he said.
Grade 12 player Rhiece Cordes
thought the team adjusted well to a
new coaching style and became stronger as the season went a long.
I think it was an adjustment for
us with Mr. Jalbert, but I think we all
warmed up to him by the end of the season. The team really improved because
of his hard work and our hard work
at practice, said Cordes. I was happy
with how our season went. At the end
of the day its not about the wins and
the losses. Its about the growth of your
team and I think everyone was able to
come together, especially in our last
game, we wanted to end the season on
a positive note.
Cordes added that she was impressed
how the younger players on the team
were able to bond as a team and adjust
well to the high school level.

THANK YOUS
Thank You

The Lauridsen family wishes to extend its deepest

appreciation to all who provided such loving support, both personal and professional, throughout
the last months of Hans life.
We have such gratitude for the dedicated people
who work in our health care system and would
like to thank Hans doctor, Dr. J. W. Fanning and
the entire staff of Strathmore Hospital who cared
for Hans with the utmost compassion, as well as
Dr. Vickers and Bonnie Mae of the Tom Baker
Cancer Center. Also bearing special mention is Joanne Linsey, RN, who, through the rural palliative
care program, provided vital and valued support
throughout this journey. We thank them all for
their steadfast presence, their knowledge and experience, and for believing so deeply in the work
they do.
We would also like to thank Reverend Pamela
Scott, who conducted the memorial service with
warmth and grace, and the storytellers, musicians
and singers who helped to make it a fitting tribute.
We continue to be grateful to all our friends and
neighbors for the calls, visits and expressions of
love, to those who offer such warmth, sympathy
and kindness to us in our grief.
