Submission Date:

1.

1. Your Name
James Toon

2. Your Institution
University of Edinburgh

3. Your Project (If you have been asked to complete this survey for more than one project, please complete for the
first project, then start a new one for the next project).
ERIS (Enhancing Repository Infrastructure in Scotland)

2.

4. Is the project on schedule as per the submitted project plan? Please comment on any areas of concern you may
have with regards to either meeting the schedule or deviating from the project plan.
We have some delays in the delivery of the technical workpackage, based entirely on the availability of resource for
development. This does not have any hugely significant impact on the deliverables or delivery date of the final
products.

5. Does the expenditure reflect the budget plan and is the latter still on track? Please list any deviation from the budget
and give reasons.
At the moment we are underspent against the rpoject budget, as a direct result of the delay in resourcing, although this
will of course level out as the project progresses. We are not aware of any significant deviations from the original
project budget.

6. What are your three most significant deliverables or activities since the last report?
6.a. Deliverable/activity 1 -- Deliverable/activity
Detailed investigations with the research pool community, leading to a greatly increased understanding of the needs of
this significant stakeholder group in Scottish research
6.a.i. Deliverable/activity 1 -- Impact types

Defined the scale and nature of a challenge

6.b. Deliverable/activity 2 -- Deliverable/activity
Continued advocacy of the Project, its aims and objectives across Scottish institutions and the UK through
presentations and meetings, incluing the setting up of a Scottish Repository managers group, the setting up of a
Scottish Liaison Librarian group, regular updates on project progress for SCURL, engagement with the RSP and
WRN.
6.b.i. Deliverable/activity 2 -- Impact types
Relationships formed or enhanced
6.c. Deliverable/activity 3 -- Deliverable/activity
Development of information gathering exercises in both project work package 1 and work package 2 in order to
identify specific researcher needs and to assess national repository preservation policies currently in place.
6.c.i. Deliverable/activity 3 -- Impact types
Defined the scale and nature of a challenge

7. Is the risk analysis that you initially carried out still current? What's changed and what have you done/will you do to
mitigate any changed risks?
The risk analysis is being monitored on a regular basis, and has been supplemented with additional project and issue
management activities. Risks that have required active management have been mostly around somereallocation of
resources between partners, issues of ambiguity in some of the rpoject deliverables, and with the management of
WP3 in the project due to skills limitations at the National Library of Scotland (due to new staff intake)

8. Can you foresee any problems that will impact on the project in the next 6 months?
Nothing that cannot be resolved. The WP2 survey work has not provided us with enough specific content at this point,
so we need to adjust our data collection to include direct interviews etc

9. Are there any particular areas of risk/problems that JISC can help with?
None at the moment of any significance. I would however welcome some support with the writing of website copy....

10. What meetings or events would benefit your project and what areas would you like to explore with other projects?
Planning on running the Repository Fringe in 2010 with a theme looking at infrastructure level projects and services.
Aim to present a paper at the Open Repositories 2010 conference. I would also like to explore working with projects
looking at research data management, CRIS/CERIF systems, and also services for central deposit and redistribution -
such as the Depot or Repository Junction, based on requirements information gathered from the research pool
community.

11. Are there any policy, technical or IPR issues that have arisen through your work that you feel JISC needs to
explore further?
No 'issues' as such, but what has been clear is that we need to start considering the notion of 'open scholarship',
particualry in relation to subject based reserach collaborations. Its come up time and time again with our work in the
research pools.

12. What are the 3 most significant things you will be doing over the next 6 months, in terms of the project plan?
Most significant activities over the next 6 months will be the completion of the National Digital Policy framework for
Scotland, the final report and subsequent recommendations to SCURL on developing repositories to meet the users
needs in Scotland and finally the setting of a revised open access declaration by the IRIScotland council in Scotland to
replace the 2004 OATS declaration.

13. Have you presented anything about the project, or written or submitted a paper at/for any kind of event (both
internal and external) in the last 6 months? Please include links.
The Project has made presentations at the following locations; • SCURL Away Day.17th June 2009. Mitchell Library,
Glasgow • JISC VRE Inf11 Start up meeting. 7th July 2009, Leicester • Repository Fringe. Pecha Kucha presentation.
30th July 2009. Edinburgh • ERIS/RSP/WRN JISC ‘Tripartite’ meeting. 8th September 2009. Birmingham. •

presentations are only available offline as saved packages.

14. What are key headlines that we can tell people about your project as a result of recent work?
Key headlines are around the intial findings from our work with research pools that have provided us with some
significant insights into the needs of a very powerful but under-represented stakeholder group in Scotland. In
particular, the comparison of vertical institutional led efforts to populate repositories in comparison to the horizontal
needs of subject based pooling initatives. We have also been looking at the advantages and disadvantages of central
vs local deposit mechanisms.

15. What organisations or individuals have you made contact with as part of the project in the last 6 months (inside and
outside the institution)?
Organisations; (incuding contact with many individuals within the institutions) Repository Support Project and the Welsh
Repositories Network EuroCRIS Duraspace/Fedora UK and I (Scholars workbench) LERU (League of European
Research Universities) Research Information Network OCLC The Victoria University of Wellington (re survey initatives)
Research pooling initatives from across Scotland including SUPA, SAGES, SICSA, SULSA, SIRE, SINAPSE and
WestChem. Contact with all Scottish HE Insitutions via SCURL and also public libraries via SLIC

16. What have you done about sustainability of your project outputs?
Working with the Edinburgh Datashare team to retain survey data gathered and through the use of project collaboration
software (37 signals Basecamp)
