Required Reading: There are two books for this course as well as a number of journal articles that
are either posted on webCT or will be handed out in class. The books for the course include: (1)
Miller and Tewksbury. 2006. “Research Methods: A Qualitative Reader”. Prentice Hall.; (2)
Anderson, Elijah. 2000. “Code of the Street: Decency, Violence, and the Moral Life of the Inner
City”. W. W. Norton & Company. The books are available at the Campus Bookstore and Off Campus
Books. Other articles are posted on webCT under “Readings” and are listed by author’s last name.
Purpose/Objective: The purpose of this course is to provide you with an overview of qualitative
research methods in criminology. This course will give you an understanding of ethical issues in
conducting social research with human subjects, the methodology and philosophy behind qualitative
research, and finally specific approaches to conducting research.
Course Requirements:
(1) You will be expected to attend class, as some of the material presented in lectures and
discussion is not contained in the course packet.
(2) You will be required to complete the assigned readings prior to the class period and
demonstrate knowledge of the concepts presented in those readings during the class period. 20
points are available for participation and attendance, with the expectation that you will
contribute to class discussions. Moreover, I expect that your participation will be respectful
and non-disruptive.
(3) You will also be required to complete a one-page description of your paper topic in addition to 5
of the 6 one-page (typed, single spaced in 12 point font) assignments that involve designing and
conducting your own mini-research studies. With each assignment you must turn in a one page
summary of what you observed, your findings, a s well as any notes you took during your
research. Some of the assignments are illustrative of methods in sociological and deviance
research in general. Since offender populations are difficult to tap in to, we may rely on
general social interaction and your observations of such behavior for many of the assignments.
Late assignments are docked 1 letter grade for each day they are late.
(4) There will be a presentation and final paper due at the end of the semester. The presentation
should be approximately 15 minutes and cover topics related to conducting qualitative research.
The paper should be 10-12 pages in length and will focus on methodology i n the proposal of a
qualitative research project. The presentation will outline and describe the project that you

proposed or conducted in your paper. Late papers are penalized one letter grade for each day
they are late.

Assignments for the Semester:
Paper Topics: Provide a one page description of your proposed topic, how you plan to investigate it,
and finally clarify the importance to criminology.
Assignment #1: Participant Observation. Select an appropriate location in which to conduct your
observation of social interaction. The setting must be a public place or a place where you have
already gained access or approval to observe the people interacting in that setting. You are
required to observe your setting for a minimum of two hours and record your observations.
Assignment #2: In-Depth Interviews. Develop a list of interview questions involving individual
experiences with crime and delinquency. Make sure the questions are open ended. Select a
minimum of two individuals to complete the interview. Your interview must be relatively
unstructured and allow the respondent to answer questions with more than simple yes or no/short
responses.
Assignment #3: Focus Groups. You are trying to assess people’s attitudes toward crime, the
media representation of crime, and criminal justice policy. Assemble a focus group of no fewer than
four people. Develop a list of 5 questions for the group. Conduct your focus group, taking notes as
you posit questions and guide the group’s discussion. If possible, tape-record the interaction so
that you can pay more attention to how the participants are interacting.
Assignment #5: Content Analysis. This exercise involves a content analysis of news media
reporting on crime. Select television, newspaper, or radio news sources. Follow these sources for 5
days, recording them if they are audio/video media or copying the articles if it is print media.
Discuss any patterns in how they report crime, what terms they utilize to describe the crime, what
types of crime they focus on, and how they construct crime as a social problem.

Academic Integrity
The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty. Because
the value of an academic degree depends upon the absolute integrity of the work done by the
student for that degree, it is imperative that a student demonstrate a high standard of individual
honor in his or her scholastic work.
Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, statements, acts or omissions related
to applications for enrollment or the award of a degree, and/or the submission as one’s own work or
material that is not one’s own. As a general rule, scholastic dishonesty involves one of the following
acts: cheating, plagiarism, collusion and/or falsifying academic records. Students suspected of
academic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary proceedings.
Plagiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, and from any
other source is unacceptable and will be dealt with under the university’s policy on plagiarism (see
general catalog for details). This course will use the resources of turnitin.com, which searches the
web for possible plagiarism and is over 90% effective.
Email Use
The University of Texas at Dallas recognizes the value and efficiency of communication between
faculty/staff and students through electronic mail. At the same time, email raises some issues

concerning security and the identity of each individual in an email exchange. The university
encourages all official student email correspondence be sent only to a student’s U.T. Dallas email
address and that faculty and staff consider email from students official only if it originates from a
UTD student account. This allows the university to maintain a high degree of confidence in the
identity of all individual corresponding and the security of the transmitted information. UTD
furnishes each student with a free email account that is to be used in all communication with
university personnel. The Department of Information Resources at U.T. Dallas provides a method
for students to have their U.T. Dallas mail forwarded to other accounts.
Disability Services
The goal of Disability Services is to provide students with disabilities educational opportunities
equal to those of their non-disabled peers. Disability Services is located in room 1.610 in the

Student Union. Office hours are Monday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday and
Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Essentially, the law requires that colleges and universities make those reasonable adjustments
necessary to eliminate discrimination on the basis of disability. For example, it may be necessary to
remove classroom prohibitions against tape recorders or animals (in the case of dog guides) for
students who are blind. Occasionally an assignment requirement may be substituted (for example, a
research paper versus an oral presentation for a student who is hearing impaired). Classes enrolled
students with mobility impairments may have to be rescheduled in accessible facilities. The college
or university may need to provide special services such as registration, note-taking, or mobility
assistance.
It is the student’s responsibility to notify his or her professors of the need for such an
accommodation. Disability Services provides students with letters to present to faculty members
to verify that the student has a disability and needs accommodations. Individuals requiring special
accommodation should contact the professor after class or during office hours.
