LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine

Great green gifts!

The holiday season is a wonderful time filled with friends, family and fun. But there
can be a downside: waste and we dont mean used wrapping paper. Unfortunately for our environment, most of the mass-produced gadgets and knick-knacks
currently for sale in the big-box stores will all too soon find their way into landfills.
So this year, why not give a gift to the Earth, as well as your loved ones? Try
out these ideas:
USE SUSTAINABLE DECORATIONS

Instead of buying new garland, centerpieces, ornaments and other items that
cant be used for purposes outside of the holidays, why not create some decorations out of materials that can be recycled or reused? Check out our #sustainableholidays pins on Pinterest for some inspiration.
GIVE THE GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE

Offering advice and resources to someone in need can be a most powerful gift.
If youre not sure what info to pass on, you can always hand loved ones a copy
of Natures Pathways once youre finished reading! As youll see in the following
pages, our expert authors have plenty of great knowledge and tips to share.
SHOP SECONDHAND

Used bookstores offer a variety of interesting items not found anywhere else.
Consignment and thrift stores can be great resources for vintage furniture and decorative items, perfect gifts for that person who loves to stand out from the crowd.
You can even shop your own home. Scour your drawers for loose buttons
and unsalvageable clothing to create new accessories like ribbon bracelets,
button necklaces or bag embellishments.
GIVE HEALTHY, PERSONALIZED PRESENTS

A home-cooked meal can warm stomachs and hearts during the colder months.
Remember: leftovers are often the best part of the holidays, so feel free to pack
them up as to-go meals for guests.
Natural beauty products, like homemade sugar scrub cubes or lip balm are
easy and fun to make.
Spa or massage therapy gift certificates can help your loved ones ease their
holiday stress.
Even something as simple as lending an ear to a friend or family member can
make a world of difference. And doing so doesnt cost a thing.
Try some of these ideas and finish 2014 out on a green note. As you can see,
you can save on the waste you create and still give a truly personalized gift one
that will be remembered far longer than any popular gadget or toy.

Get real with

yourself!

By Carol Michalski, MSW, LCSW

The happiest people I know are always

evaluating and improving themselves. The
unhappy people are usually evaluating and
judging others.
Lisa Villa Prosen

s a professional life and career

coach, I often hear Ive done
everything to find a new job, but

Im not getting anywhere! Although

finding a job or new career today can be
challenging, it is not impossible. It takes
persistence, patience and a good deal of
courage. It may feel like you are doing
everything you can, but usually there is
room for improvement!
Think audit! I like the concept of the
energy audits we can do on our homes;
figure out where the cold air is getting
in and the hot air is getting out. Then we
come up with a solution to fix it and get
better results. Consider conducting an
audit, a systematic review or assessment of
your job search strategy.

Audit yourself

One powerful method for improving is

to conduct a performance audit on yourself! Approach it as if you were evaluating
someone who works for you. Remember that no one is perfect and knowledge
is power! Examine the strategies and
processes behind your current efforts.
Shining a bright light on whats been
working well, and not so well, is the first
step to building a successful strategy.

Audit your job search

Ask yourself hard questions that will force

you to evaluate how youve been doing so
8

Natures Pathways | December 2014

far, and what you can do to up your game.

For example:
On average, how many jobs do you
apply for in a week?
How many of these companies respond
or send interview invites?
Which actions (sending emails, attending industry events) generate the most
leads?
How much in-person networking are
you doing?

Audit the companies you are

applying to

In addition to researching company details,

consider what you can offer them. Prepare a
number of talking points on how you would
improve or add value to the company, their
initiatives or the specific position.

Audit your messaging

A recent poll found that 30 percent of people

have surfed the net to research people at
work or potential business contacts. The
reasons varied from simply looking up an
address to researching a potential boss or
preparing for a business negotiation.
The implications of this statistic are
huge for anyone looking to advance their
career. If youre searching for a new job, its
safe to assume that at least some employers
www.naturespathways.com

are running an Internet search before they

call you. If youre currently employed,
you can bet that some of your employees,
peers, and business associates are looking
you up online.
Here are just a few reasons why having
and managing your message is crucial for
career advancement:
Your employees, peers and superiors
will research you online.
Recruiters and HR executives may look
you up before deciding to interview
you.
Former colleagues may try to find
you in order to offer you a great
opportunity.
Recruiters may, and often do, search
online to find potential candidates for
a new vacancy.
Last, but not least:

Audit your personal brand

What kind of first impression are you

making? Does your outward appearance,
wardrobe, grooming, styling, etc., convey
the message you are trying to send? Im
sure youve heard it said that first impressions are the most important. People make
immediate judgments about a persons
ability, knowledge, attention to detail, etc.,
based entirely on their appearance. You
have just a few seconds to make a good
first impression and its almost impossible
to change it. So its worth giving each new
encounter your best shot!
Job searching is a tough business. Accept
the fact that it will take some time, effort,
patience and self-awareness. Keep track of
your efforts and compare them with your
results. You may have to audit and recalibrate your tactics multiple times. In sales,
it is well known that only 5-10 percent of
your initial contacts will lead to an opportunity. Keep in mind that every no gets
you closer to the yes!

Happy cats,
happy
home

By Kathleen Folz

amilies with dogs can take advantage of dog parks, doggy day
care, dog training classes and an ever-widening variety of interactive dog toys to keep our canine companions happy, healthy
and well-behaved. Many people view cats as more independent, aloof
and perhaps not so demanding of our attention and interaction. Every
week however, we have customers coming to the store to seek solutions for cat behavior issues such as not using the litterbox, excessive
licking or not getting along with other pets in the home.
It is important to know that an issue that may appear to be bad or
nervous behavior may have a medical reason. Once you have ruled
out health issues as a cause for these behaviors with your holistic/
integrative veterinarian, you can explore new ways to engage your
cat in play and activities that may help alleviate stress, boredom and
unwanted behaviors. Here are some tips and suggestions to enrich
your cats daily activities.
PROVIDE A VARIETY OF SAFE TOYS. Many cats love simple

toys such as balls, pompoms and toys filled with catnip. Rotate
the toys you leave out to keep Kitty interested. If your cat enjoys
catnip, store the toys in a sealed container with a sprinkle of dried
catnip to keep the scent fresh. Hide the toys around the cats space,
in a box or paper bag for Kitty to discover. Dried organic catnip
may be purchased or you may choose to grow and dry your own.
Check all toys frequently to make sure your cat is not ingesting
parts that may lead to a medical emergency.
TAKE TIME TO PLAY WITH YOUR CAT! There may be nothing

more boring to your cat than a toy that doesnt move. Challenge
your cats natural hunting prowess with toys attached to a wand
or pole. Spend some quality time discovering Kittys preference
10

Natures Pathways | December 2014

for fast-moving or barely wiggling prey as you hide around the

corner, moving the toy and watching the hunt!
EXTEND HUNTING TIME BY PLACING HEALTHY TREATS
IN INTERACTIVE TOYS AND FEEDERS. Freeze-dried meat

treats or treats containing healthy, grain-free ingredients can be put

in toys made to dispense them as the cat rolls or bats the ball around,
such as SlimCat by Petsafe. If your cat prefers to see the treat, a challenging feeder such as the Catch by Northmate may your choice.
Switch things up occasionally by hiding treats in a paper towel tube
or a paper bag! If Kitty needs to watch his or her weight, remember
to lessen the next meal a bit to accommodate a few treats.
RELAXING AFTER PLAYTIME CAN BE A WONDERFUL
BONDING TIME FOR YOU AND YOUR CAT. Take some time

to gently pet or massage Kitty. If your cat does not care for a lot of
physical contact, simply sharing a quiet moment with soft music can
help Kitty relax. If you were wondering what type of music would
help your cat relax and reduce stress, Through a Cats Ear: Music
for Calming may be an answer. This music has been researched,
arranged and recorded to help reduce stress specifically for cats.
Enriching your cats daily routine will be a rewarding and bonding
experience for you and your feline!

Should
diabetics and
pre-diabetics
go
fat free?

By Rosalie Misco (Grandma Rose)

t is taught by those who teach diabetics what they should eat

that diabetics should cut fat out of their diet. The reason they
give is heart disease is very common in diabetics. It is true
that heart disease is very common in diabetics, but does saturated
fat cause it?
Fat and protein raise blood sugar very little. Compare labels;
when fat is removed, the carbohydrate count of the product goes up.
Diabetics often have high triglyceride levels. Triglyceride is a fat that
clogs arteries, leading to heart disease and excessive carbohydrates
cause a rise in triglyceride levels. Triglyceride should be 100 or less.
Does dietary fat cause weight gain? This is a common misconception. Fat has 9 calories per gram and protein and carbohydrates only 4 calories per gram. Fat requires half of the 9 calories to digest. As far as real effect on weight gain, fat, protein and
carbohydrates are equal. Fat and protein raise blood sugar very
little, carbohydrates raise blood sugar high and fast.
Fat makes you feel full. Carbohydrates make you hungry,
leading to excess consumption, weight gain and carbohydrate
addiction. Trans fats (fake fats) are hydrogenated and partially
hydrogenated fats. Trans fats should be avoided as they are manufactured and the body does not know how to deal with them. They
clog arteries and contribute to heart disease.
Do not fear saturated fat. Full-fat dairy will raise blood sugar
less than fat-free. Butter, lard and meat fat are good. Do not avoid
egg yolks, as they contain most of the nutrients of the egg.
Natural Expressions chocolate truffle mix uses full-fat cream
cheese and is sugar-free, high in fiber and low-carb. Mixes like this
help make you feel full because they digest very slowly, helping
you break the carb addiction.

Traditionally candles were

used in churches of all
denominations for their
symbolic meaning of light.
at this time of year when brightly colored Christmas trees begin
to pop up. The strings of colored lights seem to draw from us a
warm feeling reminiscent of the idea of home. In each moment we
observe these trees, whether inside or outside a building, and they
create for us a festive and decorative atmosphere.
There is more to this seasons history. There are great traditions that have evolved over thousands of years, across multiple
cultures, nationalities and religions that have deep and complex
meanings. Many of them point toward a message of life, joy, hope
and love.
We stand in awe when an entire house and yard is decorated to
such an extent that some of the lights even dance to music. What a
spirit-lifting experience. What a grand gesture when entire neighborhoods share colored electrical lights with their neighbors,
friends and those who pass by.
Another magical inner light experience is witnessing that familiar lighted candle. Traditionally candles were used in churches of
all denominations for their symbolic meaning of light. The main
message was to produce light and dispel darkness. Many people
welcomed the beauty and warmth of the flame as a reminder
of the love of God. Candlelight naturally brought serenity and
comfort especially at this time of year. Has it ever occurred to you
that a candle does not lose any of its power and brilliance by using
www.naturespathways.com

itself to light another candle?

Having shared a few ideas about electrical holiday lights and the
blessings of candlelight there is another form of light what we
call our personal human lightbody. This light is broadcast when
we move through each day with more smiles on our faces and well
wishes in our hearts. There is no need to be concerned that our
inner source of light will diminish in any way. Our light is always
present, although we can hide it from others or even ourselves.
The source of our light is unlimited and eternal. It shines freely
and unconditionally. Here is a short list of one-word descriptions
used to express the light: love, giving, togetherness, bright, happy,
harmony, peace and blessings.
To take an active part in creating this seasons atmosphere,
consider these forms of light, whether colored electrically, flames
from candles, or our inherited inner light and blend all three into
a continued daily expression of peace. Together, we gift ourselves
and gift all of humanity by being a light unto the world.

Christmas Lights

Thanksgiving is now over

And holidays take another turn
We drag out those Christmas lights
For we all love to see them burn.
Dont you enjoy traditions?
They sure do take us back
Passed down to generations

Like Santas Christmas snack.

Brilliant lights are everywhere
At home and in the stores
They glisten and sparkle
While we do our shopping chores.
They are even strung across
Busy streets in town
Music blends in everywhere
Oh, I love that Christmas sound.
Its a time when little children
Try so hard not to get in fights
Their behavior starts to change
Seeing those Christmas lights. Marilyn Lott
A Christmas candle is a lovely thing, it makes no noise at all,
But softly gives itself away; While quite unselfish, it goes small.

Teaching kids
to
give back

haritable giving is a part of the holiday season for many

people who are spurred to donate for various reasons, including the general spirit of giving synonymous with the holidays.
That giving does not have to be exclusive to adults. Parents who want
to show their youngsters this season is about more than presents can
approach that task in various ways, including involving kids directly in
giving back to their communities or helping the less fortunate.

Volunteer work

Kids of all ages can volunteer. Acclimate youngsters to the idea of

volunteering this holiday season. Youngsters efforts need not be
elaborate. Toddlers can help collect food for a food pantry while
school-aged children can assist elderly neighbors. The entire
family can work together at a school, hospital or nursing facility. The earlier children become accustomed to giving back, the
more inclined they may be to continue those efforts and make it a
central part of their lives.

Clean out the closet

Donating items also can teach kids valuable lessons, including

helping them recognize how fortunate they are and how they are
in a position to help those who are not so lucky. Parents and children can work together so it doesnt seem like the little ones are
the only ones giving away their belongings. Adults also should
sort through their items and have an equally impressive pile of
donations. In addition to local clothing collection bins, there are
regional and national collection services that may even pick up
items right from your home.

Bake sale

Another fun way children can get involved is by hosting a bake

sale or craft sale. The proceeds of all items sold can be used to
benefit a charity chosen by the kids. Let youngsters set the course
for the creative extravaganza.

Clean up

Families can work together to clean up a stretch of beach or a local

park or even make improvements to a neighborhood playground.
Ideas include painting murals, installing benches and cleaning
up litter. Just be sure to get permission from the property owner
or appropriate civic authorities so that your project is not interrupted or deemed illegal.

Educate others

Children old enough to understand the plight of others can help

to spread knowledge and awareness about particular issues. Ask a

Dancing
For Birth
Childbirth education
and prenatal fitness

By Kamala McCormick

magine the elation of freely moving your hips and dancing

through labor and birth! Dancing For Birth is a childbirth
education and fitness program that was created by childbirth
professional and dance instructor Stephanie Larson. Dont think
that dance is only for those trained since childhood or the professionals on stage and screen; dance is for you!
Dancing For Birth incorporates different dance styles, mainly
utilizing movements inspired by belly dance. The program helps build
strength, body awareness and flexibility, and includes movements that
build a womans confidence in her bodys ability to give birth. The
moves are simple yet fun and the unconventional childbirth education is empowering! After the baby is born, just wear baby in your
favorite wrap or sling and move and dance toward a healthy recovery.
If a woman had no preconceived notion of how to give birth and
was without culture or media to tell her how she should do it, she
would birth by changing her position in response to her bodys cues,
becoming a mother as effortlessly and as knowingly as she grew from
an infant to child into a woman.
Stephanie Larson
Freedom of movement during labor is the most important
factor for effective birthing. The physiological reasons that allow
dancing to facilitate birth are important to consider. Dancing,
even swaying, during labor helps a woman to let her body move
and work with the contractions rather than resist them.
Dancing reduces the physical stress and tension on a mother
because she is occupied with movement. Breathing is deeper and
more regular, reducing adrenaline that could slow labor by causing
the circular uterine muscles to close. Dancing uses gravity to moms
advantage and the changes in position positively affect the frequency,
length and duration of contractions. If a mom hums or sings with the
music she is listening to, she helps open her cervix and vagina. These
sphincters are affected by the openness of the mouth and throat.
www.naturespathways.com

Dancing movements also increase the dimensions of the pelvis.

When arched, the pelvis is most open. Asymmetry of the pelvis
creates more usable space for the baby to move, turn and fit. The
mothers upright, forward movements help the baby achieve an
optimal fetal position. This desirable left occipital anterior (LOA)
position (a baby on mothers left side) allows direct pressure of
babys head against the mothers cervix, aiding in dilation. Physiologically, dancing allows the back of the pelvis to move backward
and allow the baby to be born without active pushing.
There are many psychological reasons dancing enhances birth.
Dancing creates a womans awareness of her bodys cues and babys
needs. A mother is empowered to actively participate in bringing
her baby into the world. Moms feel less pain and more satisfaction
when they are able to experience freedom of movement. The autonomy and control facilitate the psychological peace needed for birth.
Dancing For Birth increases an expectant mothers strength, focus
and purpose while accentuating her grace and sense of the beauty in
childbirth. Moms who dance for childbirth intimately know the celebration and empowerment that is theirs in bringing life into the world.

Step outside your

comfort zone
Discover your purpose with astrology

By Lisa Anne

ook around you right now. Where are you feeling that
heavy ache of something more? Where are you consistently making the same mistakes and creating unnecessary
unhappiness? What is your intuition (your heart) saying to you?
Lean into it and listen. It is the voice of destiny. Our destiny lies
right outside the comfort zone and patiently waits for the ache to
outweigh the fear. A courageous step forward is required, thrusting us out beyond what we know and into the wild unknown. And
the unknown can be terrifying.
We are so comfortable with what is familiar. Even when we have
outgrown that loathsome job, the stagnant relationship or selfsabotaging behavior pattern we tend to cling to what we know,
what we rely on to get us by. But we are here to not just get by. We
are here to evolve and grow.
As a professional astrologer, there are many ways to learn what
areas of life are habitual traps for self-undoing and self-sabotage.
They are the lunar nodes: the north and south nodes of the moon.
The south node shows our past conditioning or patterns, ultimately our comfort zone. This is where we tend to over-extend
ourselves, and give ourselves away. For example, for someone
who has their south node in the sign of Cancer, there may be an
over-involvement with family drama and hiding from the world
through caring for everyone except yourself. For someone who
has their south node in Aries, there may be a tendency to use
anger as a coping strategy and a refusal to let others into their
world. I dont need anybodys help; I can do it on my own.
All of these patterns become so ingrained that they become the
fabric of our comfort and security. We become tired and uninspired
when we keep repeating these old patterns and become stuck in the
past. Life becomes monotonous, boring and aimless. How do we stop?
How do we change our direction? The north node holds the key.
The north node is literally the opposite point of the south node
in every way in the sky as well as its deeper meaning and significance. It holds our mission and our purpose. It shows the vast
expanse that lies just beyond our comfort zone. It is the space that
calls most to us and yet scares us to our core. It is where we take
16

Natures Pathways | December 2014

two steps forward and one step backward. But if we take a risk
with that courageous step forward, eventually we will step into the
beyond and into our destiny.
Our north node is our ultimate compass. It is the direction
we are headed toward. It is where we finally release the past and
embrace what we came here to learn and experience. The south
node represents worn-out patterns and areas we resort to when
we are afraid. The north node represents the new, healthy patterns
we are called to create and develop. It is where and how we become
inspired to grow into our best self.
Without awareness, there can be no real change. Learn about
your north node and risk that courageous step out into the
unknown just beyond your comfort zone. Take a step. Your
destiny is waiting.

Your mission and purpose, according to your

north node sign

Below are general descriptions of the north node in each sign. (Please
see the sidebar to this article to discover which north node sign applies
to your birthdate.) Please keep in mind there are many other factors
involved. This is only a window into the vast world of astrology.
If your north node is in:
CAPRICORN: Your mission and purpose is to become the author-

ity of your life and build a business that is created with integrity,
hard work and perseverance; to stop caretaking as a way of avoiding
your own responsibilities. You are responsible for your own happiness. Your time is now and it is time to build your dream.
AQUARIUS: Your mission and purpose is to create in a unique and

inspired way; to create something unconventional, inventive and

supremely yours; to risk standing out and being different; to release
self-centered thinking and think for the future; to dream your dream.
PISCES: Your mission and purpose is to find peace within your

soul and share your mission of love with the world; to learn the
difference between sacrifice and service; to know your soul.

Move your spine

with functional
Cat-Cow
A pose sequence to help relieve
back pain and stiffness

By Hope Zvara

Why practice Cat-Cow sequence?

Cat-Cow strengthens the lower back and core muscles, in addition to lengthening the spine. This is often a prescribed pose for
lower back pain, but when done with a few tweaks this becomes a
powerful pose to help aid in releasing kyphosis of the upper back.
Those aging, struggling with a stiff body or those with shoulder
and lower back complaints should try this movement in a seated
position, in chair pose or standing with the hands on the thighs.

How to practice it

1. Begin in Table Top position, on your hands and knees.

2. Inhale, turn the tailbone up, spread the sitting bones and drop

the belly, feeling the spine curve. Work to feel the movement
come from back to front.
3. Bending the elbows to release the shoulder girdle, traction

the hands and arms back and move the sternum and heart
forward between the arms.
4. Now press up through the arms to stretch the tops of the
shoulders and lengthen the neck.
5. Gently look up without collapsing the back of the neck.
6. Exhale and round the spine upward toward the ceiling, pressing through the hands and shoulders, and lean slightly back
toward the feet.
7. Tuck the chin to the chest and tailbone between the legs and
activate the pelvic floor. Really work to feel the entire back
body open up.
8. Repeat several times for up to a minute.
Be very mindful not to force the very mobile areas of the spine to
take over; this should be a slow and very mindful movement. Focus
on feeling the movement rather than doing, as when we practice in
such a way we are able to truly tap into the areas that need the work.
Each time you move through this sequence you should feel
more and more alive and open. Do not expect the first two or
three rounds to be smooth and easy. Use several very mindful
rounds to cultivate the release your body is craving; move in the
areas you dont move.

What on earth?
Shake, rattle and roll;
we know Mother Nature
has all the control

By Kim Hall

other Earth, as many call her: she is the one that

inspires and provides this place where we all have been
birthed. This beautiful land, so vast and spacious, full
of abundance and quite bodacious.
I have so much gratitude for all the life she gives. Its everything.
Its all the kingdoms of life that surround us: the rocks, plants,
animals and human beings all having the ability to live in
harmony because we are all sustained on this earthly plane.
So why do so many take her for granted? Does anyone understand that humanity exists because of Mother Earth? This is where
our food is planted. We as humans are the stewards of the water,
land and animals that sustain us. Start humming the tune, This
land is your land, this land is my land. From California, to the
New York Island This land was made for you and me.
The Native Americans consider the earth the sixth direction.
In numerology, the number six represents relationships, love and
Mother Mary. And isnt it interesting that when the h in earth
gets moved to the beginning of the word, it becomes heart.
Yes, the heart that beats, rum pa pum pum, like the drum. The
drum being the worlds first instrument that we hear/feel during
gestation from our mothers heart. Its a great coincidence that elders
are able to remember more when they have a drum around them.
Our bodys health thrives on its connection to the water and
rocks, to the plants, to the animals. Being outdoors is hugely
healing for the body. Those who walked before us were so much
more connected to the earth and all the answers it can provide.
Today the rubber-soled shoes, the rubber-wheeled vehicles, and
the desks and offices create distance.
All of us are healthier when we receive the magnetic energy
currents from the earth. All the sensations nature brings through
smell, touch, sight, sound and taste create a more peaceful place.

The plants contained in essential oils provide nature year-round,

creating better balance and well-being when diffused, applied
directly onto the body or even ingested when safe to do so. The
intelligence of the plants coupled with their pureness synchronizes
with the body so that the entire body is feeling good. Indigenous
peoples of the world all relied on the plants for pure healing.
Here are seven great ways to incorporate and appreciate Mother
Natures gifts for us:
1. Get one hour of outdoor play per day.
2. Bring nature indoors through plants and essential oils.
3. Eat root vegetables.
4. Get grounded: Go barefoot, lay on the grass, visit the beach
get outside.
5. Feed the birds; appreciate wildlife.
6. Collect rocks/crystals.
7. Invest in an earthing device.

Understanding
wellness

By Patrick McCann, D.C.

he buzzword wellness is everywhere today. So what is

wellness and how do we attain it? In chiropractic, living
a true wellness lifestyle revolves around four major areas
in our lives: eating well, moving well, thinking well and being
well-adjusted.
Have you ever heard the phrase, You are what you eat? Think
about your body as an expensive sports car and the food you eat
as the fuel. What kind of fuel are you putting in your body? You
wouldnt put fast food and soda into your gas tank and expect
your car to run efficiently, or at all for that matter. So why do we
fill our bodies with junk and expect different results? The fuel we
put in our bodies should be as nutritious and healthy as possible.
When we give our body the correct fuel it needs, our body can
focus on growth, repair, healing and development.
The second area of a wellness lifestyle is moving well. As we all
know, exercise and staying active are key components to a healthy
life. You may not know that exercise is a huge component in brain
health. When we exercise we literally build new neural pathways

from the brain to the body, keeping our brain healthy and happy.
Exercise also releases endorphins in the body, which is that
feel-good chemical acting as an analgesic. Endorphins also give
us tons of increased energy. In fact, a Duke University study has
shown that exercise can have just as good a benefit to those suffering with depression as taking an antidepressant, but with out the
potential side effects.
Do you have stinking thinking? Problems related to work,
family, finances and health are mental and emotional stresses that
we have all experienced at some point in our lives. Prolonged stress
can lead to anxiety, depression, digestive issues, heart disease and
sleep issues, etc. Mental/emotional stresses can often be the most
taxing to our health.
The most important part of a wellness lifestyle is all about function! How well is your body functioning? How would you know?
You see, it doesnt matter how well you eat, exercise or think if
your body isnt functioning at its optimum. This leads us to the
last component to living a healthy lifestyle: being well-adjusted.

Chiropractic is not about neck and back pain, its all about function and specifically the function of your nervous system. The
nervous system controls and coordinates the function of every
cell, tissue and organ in the body. Think of the nervous system
as the telephone company of the body, coordinating the messages
from the brain to the body and from the body back to the brain,
making sure all messages are received and sent efficiently to their
proper destinations.
When the bones of the spine become misaligned this is called
a subluxation. Subluxation affects nerve signals from the brain to
the body, thereby decreasing the bodys ability to adapt to stress,
to heal and to function properly. When our body isnt adapting,
symptoms of sickness, aches and pains, and many other health
concerns can occur. By making sure your nervous system is free
and clear of subluxation, chiropractic can optimize the bodys
ability to function!
To live a true wellness lifestyle, put focus into how well you eat,
move, and think and, most importantly, make sure your nervous
system is functioning optimally by being well-adjusted.

Gifts that
can change
the world
The importance of
philanthropy

By Lars M. Lewander

he holiday season is when many of us begin to think about

giving gifts to loved ones and friends. This year, consider
making a donation to the charity or cause of your choice in
the name of the recipient, rather than purchasing baubles or items
that merely gather dust throughout the year. Volunteering and
donating time together as a family at a food pantry or retirement home, for instance provide children with many opportunities to learn how others live and to feel good about themselves.
(Volunteering also looks great on a resume or college application.)
College students or recent grads (remember my previous article
on the Millenials: http://bit.ly/1uBZNV9?) can be encouraged to
defy their generations stereotype of slacktivism and become
actively engaged in charitable acts. Its great to read about young
people doing good things, even with just a dollar or two. Consider
17-year-old Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teen who has for
several years advocated for the right of girls to get an education
and who nearly died after being shot by Taliban gunmen who

dont want girls attending school. She became the youngest-ever

Nobel Prize recipient in 2014.

Why is philanthropy so important?

Philanthropy comes from the Greek and Latin philanthropos,

or kindness, humanity, benevolence, loving to mankind. It is the
desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by
the generous donation of money or time to good causes. Many
money managers advocate giving 10 percent of ones income to a
charity, church or nonprofit organization of choice.
In addition to the feel-good factor one gets from helping
others in need, there are numerous practical reasons for being
generous and becoming more involved in community service.
However, in a world of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, it is easy
to get carried away with the appeals coming your way. But stop
and do your due diligence before giving. Check out each charity
and make sure you know who is behind the appeal. If in doubt,
just say no.
If you believe government is the solution to poverty, illiteracy,
domestic abuse or environmental issues the list goes on
think again. Even members of Congress have recognized that
in an emergency situation or natural disaster, the American Red
Cross and other nonprofit organizations are much more efficient
than government agencies like the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Nonprofit organizations help our society run more effectively
and efficiently. Thats why donations to such organizations are
tax-deductible we are helping the government allocate funds
to those who need them most, and in a timely fashion without
mounds of red tape. With federal funding being cut and charitable contributions down because of economic uncertainty, many
organizations have had to reduce programs and services. But at
www.naturespathways.com

the same time, these are the times that many Americans need
these services the most.
Unlike paying more taxes to the government, with charitable
contributions, we can decide where the money gets spent by choosing
which charities we contribute. In 2009, American individuals, foundations and corporations contributed over $303.75 billion to charitable organizations. If we just increased that by 1 percent, it would
put over $3 billion more into these organizations and allow them to
continue to provide and expand their services to those in need.
Corporations and even small businesses can do their part by
not only creating new jobs but also contributing what they can to
charitable causes, even if it is just allowing employees time off for
charitable work.

Teaching our children to give back

We can instill the idea of charitable giving and volunteerism in

our children at an early age. Rather than giving them toys or items
that quickly lose their sparkle, take your children with you on
charity walks or runs; let them help pack lunches for seniors or
sort food at a local food pantry. Instead of conventional holiday
presents, perhaps invite friends to donate to Heifer International
and purchase a goat or even a young heifer to provide nutrition
and a source of income to a third-world village. Create a legacy in
their life that theyll never forget.
Young people are eager to help the planet and their fellow citizens; explore new avenues with them and see what a difference
you can make in your neighborhood, your city and even the world.

Here are three ways to help children learn the importance of

giving back:
1. Make a list of nonprofit or philanthropic organizations in your
community, your state, your region or even the world. GuideStar (www2.guidestar.org) lists 1.8 million nonprofits in its
database, all of which have met IRS criteria for exempt organizations. You can check here to make sure your charity is a
501(c)(3) charity, and examine a charitys latest tax form that
it has filed with the IRS.
2. Ask kids who they have a heart to serve. Is it the elderly? The
homeless? Or children?
3. After a volunteer event, debrief as a family.
Your kids will learn that real people can end up in tragic circumstances, but that hope and love offer a way out. When they see the
smile of a child who doesnt have a lot of material things, or the
true joy in the face of an elderly man in a nursing home, it will
change their lives forever and bond you as a family for a lifetime.
There is no doubt that giving makes us feel good. So go ahead, be
generous this holiday season. If you do so with both your head and
your heart, your giving will warm you and others for a long time to
come, as well as setting a great course for your children to follow.

Excerpts on
love, miracles
and peace
A gift for your inner
well-being

By Jill E. Greinke, MSW, LCSW, SAC

hen I was contemplating writing this article, I was

inspired once again to reflect on the holidays. One
of my values includes being culturally all-inclusive.
Most of you who have read my articles know I include snippets of
wisdom from others that I feel are particularly poignant. In this
article, I have selected a number of quotes to guide and help us to
meditate about the upcoming holiday season. They are taken from
individuals with beliefs stemming from the five major religions in
our world today. They also include other messages to help encourage and motivate us during this winter season of love, miracles
and peace.
Whenever I get gloomy [about] the state of the world, I think about
the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinions starting to
make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I dont see
that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, its not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but its always there fathers and
sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends,

girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far
as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were
messages of hate or revenge they were all messages of love. If you
look for it, Ive got a sneaking suspicion love actually is all around.

The character of the Prime Minster of Great Britain played
by Hugh Grant from the motion picture Love
Actually, written and directed by Richard Curtis.

Love

It is a major tenet of the five major religions: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. Christmas the Christian
celebration of the birth of their spiritual savior, Jesus Christ is
one of the first winter celebrations.
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will
conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Isaiah 78:14, New International Version
Immanuel means God with us or God incarnate. Many also
believe that God is love. Others believe God is in everything and
everyone in other words, ever present and all around. My hope
for this article is to shed light on the divine love within each of us.
And this love is that of pure, highly vibrating energy, the kind that
can truly create peace and joy, as well as invoke miracles in, through
and around us if we allow ourselves to feel by surrendering to it.
Love is all around me, its everywhere I go.

Love is all around, by the Troggs
The Wall Street Journal reported that Malala Yousafzai was a
young Pakistani woman who was shot in the head at close range
by Taliban gunman. This was in retaliation for her high profile
campaign for educating and criticizing the Taliban. She survived

the gunshot wound and has become a spokesperson for education,

womens and human rights. She has received many peace awards
and was one of two recipients of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize. She is
the youngest recipient of this award. She is also a Muslim.
In her book, I am Malala, she expresses herself in what I feel
is the epitome of love. She has a mission to educate and speak out.
She is a visionary who strives to express the true meaning of love:
the lack of fear and embodiment of authenticity. She also writes
about her lack of bitterness or desire for revenge, which is remarkable. I also believe she embodies the miraculous.
There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing
is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.

Albert Einstein

Miracles

Many people believe in miracles. The New Testament of the Christian Bible has several accounts of miracles that Jesus performed.
But if we take the time, we can see miracles occurring all around
us. We can see them in everyday life and in the simple things.
We can see them in each other. They are the extraordinary things
found within the ordinary. In her book, Malala also stated, It was
a miracle I was alive, after he was shot at close range. This young
woman has taken a tragedy and miraculously created betterment
for her world from it.
Another young woman, Jewish in this case, Anne Frank, wrote
in The Diary of a Young Girl: I dont think of all the misery, but
of the beauty that still remains. It was miraculous she remained
so cheerful despite her circumstances as a teen in hiding with
her family during the Holocaust of World War II. Yet there is the
miracle of her life that illuminated inspiration and love. She chose
to see the beauty despite the darkness all around.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate
cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Martin Luther King, Jr.
Wayne Dyer said, I am realistic I expect miracles. In other
words, we have a right to them. We just have to be open to receiving them. Love helps us to do so. Many believe the opposite to be
true. Perhaps this is the season to change any negative or embittered thoughts of darkness, deprivation, sense of lacking or hate,
to being open to and receiving abundant grace, love and peace.
Because it is our birthright!

for many of us with all the stories broadcasted depicting intolerance, injustice, war and hate. Dr. Wiesel eloquently represents the

Weaving a

better life

How relationships
heal and make us stronger

By Rebecca Bentz
Everywhere you look, the brightness of the holidays shines. Glittering displays light store windows, cheerful music pipes through
any available speaker and smiles stretch across the faces of those
around you. Good cheer surrounds you. Yet try as you might, you
just dont feel the warmth of that brightness.
Youre not alone.
Many people experience a disparity between how the world
says theyre supposed to feel during the holidays happy, joyful,
celebratory and how they actually feel, explains Rich Hanhardt,
executive director of The Sacred Bond Center in Wauwatosa. The
holidays naturally summon up memories of family members who
are not with us, memories of childhoods that perhaps werent
so great, things that didnt turn out how we planned and recent
losses of personal relationships.
The first year going through the holidays after a loss, a death
in the family, divorce, or similar is the toughest time to go through
a holiday, Hanhardt acknowledges.
But there is hope. There are ways to heal from those losses,
and it starts with looking at how you connect with the world
around you. Taking a look at the kinds of relationships that
people have in their life is a critical self-examination for how to
begin the healing process, or how we might really celebrate even
in the midst of personal losses.

Strength through connection

A number of ancient cultures shared the belief that each persons
destiny was a thread held by three sisters: the Fates. The sisters
measurement, weaving and cutting of that thread controlled a
persons fortune throughout life.
Today we know we have much more control over our destiny,
but some of the lessons weve learned from the Fates still hold true.
Our lives are much like individual threads: On their own,
theyre ever so fragile, seemingly insignificant. Yet when our
thread entwines with others, it creates a bond stronger than any
one thread could ever be. And by weaving our thread in specific
ways, we can create beautiful things.
Similarly, our relationships with others can mend our lonely,
troubled selves, helping us become strong, assured and whole
human beings. Just any old relationship wont do, though.
Genuine healing comes from cultivating extraordinary types of
relationships called sacred bonds.

The role of sacred bonds

Sacred bonds: When people are hurting during the holidays,
thats where theyre hurting, Hanhardt explains. And in order
to heal that hurt, you must first understand how sacred bonds
entwine with your life.
According to Hanhardt, five main levels of sacred bonds exist.
Level 1: Profoundly spiritual sacred bonds. The first and most
major level of sacred bonds is the spiritual connection.

The only way we can actually heal is through the spiritual,

Hanhardt explains. So if people are suffering or have not had [a
spiritual connection] in their lives, or theres been wounding there,
thats a great loss. And it comes up during the holidays because
there are spiritual invitations everywhere.
Most of the visitors seeking Hanhardts assistance at The Sacred
Bond Center have experienced a traumatic spiritual injury. Perhaps
their spiritual beliefs are at odds with what they were taught
growing up, or maybe they have lost faith in some way. Hanhardt
helps these individuals process and understand their past trauma,
examine the current state of their sacred bond with the spiritual,
and identify ways to heal and nourish this bond.
Level 2: Spiritually blessed human sacred bonds. This level of
sacred bonds is comprised of human relationships that, when we
enter them, are automatically spiritual. For example, a marriage is
a spiritual bond to many, as is a parent-child relationship. Other
examples can include the connection of a pastor or other religious
leader with his or her congregation, or in some ways the relationship of a therapist and client.
In these relationships, there is an expectation of a certain level
of care and commitment, Hanhardt explains.
Level 3: Deeply human sacred bonds. The third level is
comprised of more lateral bonds of special closeness, Hanhardt
says. These are bonds in which one would feel a sense of betrayal
if that relationship was used in a negative way. Examples include
teacher-student bonds or relationships between good friends.
Level 4: Sacred bonds we develop with those we may not
even know. The fourth level of sacred bonds sometimes confuses
people. To explain it, Hanhardt uses the example of providing food
or other resources to those in need.
If I make a contribution to help feed somebody whos starving
in the Philippines, I never know that person, he explains. Yet
I get the good feeling of being compassionate, and that person
gets food to keep them alive. Thats a level of sacred bond.
Hanhardt points out that at any level, but especially the fourth,
it doesnt take much for someone to build a number of sacred
bonds. By simply volunteering in the community or contributing to
charities, if you have the means, you create new bonds. And the
holidays are a perfect time to do so; consider developing your own
sacred bonds by helping out at a local soup kitchen, participating
in charitable events or engaging in other selfless acts.
Level 5: Our sacred bond with the earth, and with creative
actions. The final level of sacred bonds involves respecting the
planet, as well as engaging in creative self-expression.

The true measure of a life

Anyone has the ability to heal emotionally and spiritually; its important to understand the role sacred bonds play in that process. By
adding and enriching the bonds in our lives, we increase our ability
to heal and to lead truly whole lives.
The greatest gift that weve been given as human beings is
the ability to enter into these wonderful relationships, Hanhardt
explains. The number and depth of sacred bonds, to me, is how

the richer they are, that should define health or wealth, rather

When we view wealth in this way, its easy to see all the ways
you can truly heal yourself: Renew old friendships; give back to

something amazing.

What is Sagittariuss intention?

Once our ego has survived last months stinging Scorpio dance of
personal intimacy and seeming death, we become aware of a greater
sense of self, connected to realms beyond our five senses and logical
mind. Expansive Jupiter beckons us to adventure into the unknown
and seeks meaning and wisdom. Wow, Sagittarius! Look at the stars!
The Sagittarius in us understands that the world is not what
it seems, that there is something much, much bigger going on
here. In our initial, fiery enthusiasm for trans-ego visionary truth
and wisdom, we might bow to the first inspiring scriptures or
doctrines that seem to satisfy our need to understand something
greater than ourselves, but more is required. Sagittariuss spiritual
intention is to inspire us to explore truth in all directions, not as
beliefs, but as experience and knowing.
A healthy, conscious Sagittarius is developing a sense of spontaneous freedom beyond the limits of our conditioned past, learning to trust intuition and divine guidance. Spending time alone
and with nature, we learn to listen to our inner voice of higher
self and speak from this source, uncensored. In maturity, we allow
others to have their truths while we remain centered in our own.
Falling short of this, our unconscious Sagittarius self becomes
self-righteous, needing to defend our ungrounded beliefs, espousing
the truth to others without taking their views into account. In our
need for absolute truth, we resist new ideas that threaten to shake
or undo our current, and still limited, perspective, and thus lose
ourselves in dogmatic, uncompromising systems of belief and ritual.

What needs healing and growth?

At times, our Sagittarius ego self, feeling wounded by inevitable

disillusionment, may experience doubt or confusion, no longer
satisfied with the pat answers offered by science and religion.
We may retreat into aloofness and even sink into a fear of not

to explore and communicate

knowing, afraid there may be no meaning to anything no
wisdom to be had. Yet our hunger for truth and meaning persists.
By continuing to explore the many truths presented by others, we
eventually begin to see a commonality and more universal answers
emerge, answers that resonate with some deep inner knowing
that was already in us. As we push past the boundaries of familiar
beliefs, our ego becomes more comfortable living from within the
questions. Experience teaches us that when we can just be, knowledge comes intuitively to us as a reflection of our deep, inner, divine
wholeness and wisdom our higher self. From there, each new
question invites an exploration into the unknown and the limitless
possibilities of our magnificent universe. Life is truly an adventure!

What can I do this month?

To heal and evolve your Sagittarius self, be more adventurous. Explore

inwardly and outwardly. Travel. Read an inspiring book. Spend time
alone and in nature. Notice how you experience your truth, your beliefs
and your responses to others. Do you cling to the familiar? Do you
prejudge situations based on past experience? Are you able to listen to
others intuitively, hearing the meaning behind their words? Or do you
think you know what others are saying without really listening? Do you
need to feel right or get caught up in arguments? Are you attached to
your religious beliefs? Do you resist others beliefs or ideas? Do you
listen to and trust your own intuition? Do you speak from your higher
consciousness, free from self-censorship? Does your life have meaning?
Are you comfortable with and perhaps even excited with the idea that
you barely know anything about what is?

Additional support (current planetary transits)

During December, the sun, Mercury and Venus will be transiting

Sagittarius. This will precipitate your desire to explore and communicate your truths with others. This is especially true during the Dec.
6 full moon in Gemini. Let your heightened curiosity be applied
toward your own willingness to speak and listen from intuition.
Healing Chiron, in Pisces, squares (90 degrees) the moon and sun,
and invites an awakening to greater understanding and meaning to
come to you through your attention to just being without need for
argument or persuasion. Allow your heart to receive anothers words
and ideas and just sit in wonder.

wise health practitioners are still utilizing

the most important Biblical essential oil,
frankincense, to help pets and their people.
Frankincense is a spiritual and a medicinal essential oil. It goes by many names.
The name, quality and uses of frankincense vary based on species and location of
origin. Many plant oils vary in their chemical composition based on the origin of
seed, cultivation method, time of harvest
and method of distillation. Frankincense
is a unique essential oil in that it is not
squeezed from a plant; it is distilled from
a resin. Frankincense trees are not lost by
the production of the oil, in fact procurement of this oil is a bit like collecting sap or
maple syrup. A frankincense tree is slashed
and the resin is allowed to ooze out. As
it dries, large chunks of gummy resin
develop. These are collected in baskets and
the oil is then distilled from this resin.
Only in Oman is the frankincense
properly called Boswellia sacra or sacred
Frankincense. Other frankincense species
include Boswellia carteri, Boswellia ferrianna and Boswellia serrata. These oils are

not created equal. They all have different

natural chemical constituents. They all
have different potential uses.
Frankincense is considered a holy
anointing oil in the Middle East. It is
highly referenced in the Bible and has been
used in religious ceremonies and as medicine for thousands of years. Currently,
Boswellia sacra is being used in South
American hospitals and is the subject of
substantial research.
Most essential oil products have a
medicinal property and a more emotional
or even spiritual impact. Frankincense can
easily penetrate into the body to exert its
influence. Dogs and cats have hundreds
more nasal receptors than we humans.
This makes them more susceptible to the
effects of aromatherapy. Many essential oil
enthusiasts believe the unique, mystical
fragrance of frankincense can assist with
and ease spiritual passing.
Topical application of frankincense, in
a soak, neat or diluted in a carrier oil, can
improve many skin conditions and even
help with internal detoxification.
www.naturespathways.com

Boswellia sacra has

been used successfully
to manage or cure
many types of cancers.
Holistic veterinarians rely on Boswellia
species and the naturally occurring
chemical constituents called boswellic
acids for their anti-inflammatory properties. The compound boswellin slows the
degradation of glycosaminoglycans in
joints. Frankincense is included in many
joint-support products to help manage
swelling and pain due to musculoskeletal
injury or arthritis.
Boswellia sacra has been used successfully
to manage or cure many types of cancers.
These results have been miraculous, but
inconsistent. Success depends on type, location and size of tumor, and also on the dose,
frequency and duration of treatment.
Sacred frankincense can kill cancer
cells. It does leave healthy cells intact. Efficacy is dependent upon contact of the oil
with the malignant cells. Depending on
location, the oil can be administered via
diffusion, orally, topically or even through
intra-tumoral injection. Injectable treatment can be very painful. Tumors injected
with sacred frankincense will generally
melt and can abscess out to the external
surface of the body. They may rupture on
their own or be lanced by the veterinarian.
Types of cancers that have been treated in
pets with varying levels of success include
osteosarcoma, gastrointestinal lymphoma,
generalized lymphoma and transitional
cell carcinoma of the bladder. This type
of care is experimental, unpredictable and
should only be implemented under the
care of a holistic veterinarian experienced
in the use of essential oils.

St. Johns
wort
Hypericum perforatum

t. Johns wort also called hypericum, Klamath weed or

goatweed is a plant with yellow flowers whose medicinal uses were first recorded in ancient Greece. The name
St. Johns wort apparently refers to John the Baptist, as the plant
blooms around the time of the feast of St. John the Baptist in late
June. Historically, St. Johns wort has been used for centuries to
treat mental disorders and nerve pain. St. Johns wort has also
been used for malaria, as a sedative, and as a balm for wounds,
burns, and insect bites. Today, St. Johns wort is used as a folk or
traditional remedy for depression, anxiety and/or sleep disorders.
The flowering tops of St. Johns wort are used to prepare teas,
tablets and capsules containing concentrated extracts. Liquid
extracts and topical preparations are also used.

What the science says

Although some studies of St. Johns wort have reported benefits for
depression, others have not. For example, a large study sponsored
by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) found that the herb was no more effective than a
placebo in treating major depression of moderate severity, and a study
co-funded by NCCAM and the National Institute of Mental Health
found that neither St. Johns wort nor a standard antidepressant medication relieved symptoms of minor depression better than a placebo.

Side effects and cautions

Its important to note that research has shown that St. Johns wort
interacts with many medications in ways that can interfere with their
intended effects. Examples of medications that can be affected include:
Antidepressants
Birth control pills
Cyclosporine, which prevents the body from rejecting transplanted organs
Digoxin, a heart medication
Indinavir and possibly other drugs used to control HIV
infection
Irinotecan and possibly other drugs used to treat cancer
32

Natures Pathways | December 2014

Seizure-control drugs, such as phenytoin and phenobarbital

Warfarin and related anticoagulants

St. Johns wort may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight. Other

side effects can include anxiety, dry mouth, dizziness, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, headache or sexual dysfunction.
Taking St. Johns wort with certain antidepressants may lead
to increased serotonin-related side effects, which may be potentially serious.
According to NCCAM, St. Johns wort is not a proven therapy
for depression. If depression is not adequately treated, it can
become severe. Anyone who may have depression should see a
health care provider. There are effective proven therapies available.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health
practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage
your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care. For tips
about talking with your health care providers about complementary
and alternative medicine, see NCCAMs Time to Talk campaign.

Post-concussion
syndrome
Facts you should know

By Tracy Bretl, D.O.

ost-concussion syndrome is a complex disorder that can

last for weeks and sometimes months after the injury
that caused the concussion. (A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury which usually occurs after a blow to the head.)
Loss of consciousness is not required for a diagnosis of concussion or post-concussion syndrome. The risk of post-concussion
syndrome does not appear to be associated with the initial injury.
In most people, post-concussion syndrome symptoms occur
within the first seven to ten days after injury and go away within
three months, though the symptoms can continue for a year or
more. Treatment of post-concussion syndrome is directed at alleviating symptoms. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness,
fatigue, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, loss of concentration, and
noise and light sensitivity.
Headaches that occur after a concussion can vary from feeling
like muscle tension headaches to migraine headaches. Muscle
tension headaches can be associated with a neck injury that
happened along with the head injury.
In some cases, people may experience emotional or behavior
changes after a mild brain injury. If confusion and/or amnesia
occur, it is important to consult a physician. If a concussion
occurs while playing a sport, do not go back into the game and be
sure to consult a physician.
Some experts believe post-concussion syndrome symptoms
are caused by structural damage to the brain or disruption of
neurotransmitter systems as a result of the impact of the concussion. Others believe symptoms are related to psychological
factors, as symptoms are similar to those diagnosed with depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder. In many cases,
both the physiologic effects of brain trauma and emotional reactions to these effects play a role in the development of symptoms.
Researchers have not determined why some people develop postconcussion syndrome symptoms and some do not.
www.naturespathways.com

Risk factors for developing post-concussion syndrome can

include age, gender and trauma. Older persons, women, and those
with concussions resulting from car collisions, falls, assaults and
sports injuries are more likely to develop post-concussion syndrome.
An emergency room physician is often the one who makes the
initial diagnosis of concussion. Most people will follow up with
their general practitioner who may then refer the person to a
neurologist or physiatrist.
Depending on the symptoms present, the doctor may order a
brain scan to check for potential problems that could be causing
the symptoms. A computerized tomography (CT) scan or magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) may be done to detect brain abnormalities.
A person experiencing dizziness may be referred to a physician
specializing in ear, nose and throat problems. A person experiencing anxiety or depression or problems with memory or problem-solving may be referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist.
Medications can be used for several of the symptoms of postconcussion syndrome.
Osteopathic manipulative treatment can be used to address
the structural abnormalities that can be found in post-concussion syndrome. Normalizing structure can normalize function,
improving or alleviating a number of the symptoms present in
post-concussion syndrome.
Education regarding post-concussion syndrome and knowing
there are treatment options can ease the persons fears and help
provide peace of mind.
Tracy Bretl, D.O., graduated from Des Moines Universitys College
of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in 1989. She then spent three
years in the United States Navy. Dr. Bretl is board certified in neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine

holidays at years end were bleak and foreboding. How do I survive them? What
will happen during the course of that day?
Will others support me? Those and other
related thoughts filled my mind. It was
not an easy time.
With the grief tools I have now, I handle
the holidays better. Now I want to share some
tools on how you can handle grief during the
holidays from sources listed below.

Part 1: If you are grieving,

follow these suggestions
1. Cut yourself some slack and

avoid shoulda, woulda, coulda.

Take care of yourself. Pay attention to
yourself and what you need. Its OK to
cry or be angry.
2. Budget for the holidays. Stay within
your budget. Do a gift blanket.
3. Decide on what you can handle
and let friends and family know.
Say, no thank you if you dont feel
like doing something. No explanation
needed.
4. Re-examine your priorities. What
do you want to do: greeting cards,
www.naturespathways.com

decorating, family dinner, holiday

shopping?
5. Eat right. Nutrition affects brain chemistry. Overeating can make you feel sluggish or moody. Watch the desserts.
6. Use alcohol in moderation. Alcohol
can act as a depressant. Choose nonalcoholic drinks.
7. Get enough rest. The holidays can
leave you exhausted. Pace yourself and
rest.
8. Exercise. This is a crucial component
to dealing with the holidays. Daily
exercise is best.
9. Enjoy the moment and remember
to have fun. Take the time to cherish
family and friends who support you.
10. Ask for help. Ask for what you need
and others will respond because they
want to.
11. Seek support through groups
and others. If the holidays get rough,
contact people in your support system
for help. Do something to get alone
time, like an outdoor walk.
12. Help others. Volunteer at some food
pantry or other charitable endeavor.

Part 2: How to help someone

who is grieving during the
holidays

Here are some tools to help you help those

who are grieving during the holidays:
1. Be supportive of the way the person
chooses to handle the holidays. Some
may follow traditions; others may
change their rituals. Remember, there
is no right way or wrong way to handle
the holidays.
2. Offer to help the person with baking,
cleaning or decorating. These tasks can
be overwhelming for one trying to deal
with raw emotions.
3. Invite the person to attend a religious
service with you and your family.
4. Invite your loved one to your home for
the holidays.
5. Never tell someone that he/she should
be over it. Instead, give the person
hope that, eventually, he/she will enjoy
the holidays again.
6. If he/she wants to talk about the deceased
loved one or their feelings about their
loss, listen. Dont worry about being
conversational just listen.

7. Cards, phone calls and visits are great

ways to stay in touch. Remind him/her

you are thinking of him/her and the
loved one who died.

Happy holidays to all. Best wishes for

2015.

Roasted
Chicken
How to create
5 easy meals!

By Emily Niesen
Dont let your normal meals go to the wayside
during the holidays. Roasted Chicken
provides endless options for quick, nutritious meals to make for those extra family
members or to enjoy a quiet evening at home
after all of the hustle and bustle of shopping.

Instructions

Purchase a 3- to 5-pound whole chicken

at your local grocery store, farmer or
butcher.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Remove the giblets if you can find
them. Rinse the chicken, pat it dry, rub
it with a little olive oil and season with
a basic seasoning like salt and pepper,
mesquite blend or poultry seasoning.
Place the chicken, breast-side up in
any oven-safe pan. Put it in the oven
for 50 minutes to 2 hours. Timing will
depend on the size of the chicken. The
chicken is done when the temperature in
the thickest part of the thigh registers at
165 degrees Fahrenheit.
Let the chicken rest for 15 minutes.
Carve and shred the chicken into

pieces suitable for your meals. Keeps

for five days in the refrigerator or three
months in the freezer.

Roasted Chicken meal

suggestions

1. Put a cup or two of shredded chicken

on the stove top with an organic

cream of chicken soup. Heat and stir.
Pour over a good biscuit. Serve with
a hearty green salad or fresh steamed
broccoli.
2. Toss shredded chicken with sliced
almonds, dried cranberries and
chopped red onion. Drizzle with
some olive oil, Caesar dressing or
strawberry vinaigrette. Wrap in a
romaine lettuce leaf or half of a pita or

wrap. (I recommend Ezekiel bread.)

3. Keep it simple and even healthier

and reheat chicken and toss it on a

spinach salad with black beans, red
onion and tomato.
4. Toss together shredded chicken,
cooked quinoa or brown rice, and
diced tomatoes. Stuff in large bell
peppers. Pour marinara sauce over
them. Heat in a crockpot, microwave
or oven.
5. Make two whole chickens with
instructions above. Shred one
completely and freeze. Enjoy the
other whole chicken in pieces: drumsticks, thighs and wings. Make sure
the rest of your plate is all green vegetables!

Lypossage:
a chemicalfree facelift
How this massage
technique can make you
look younger naturally

By Rob Reader

otox and fillers have become increasingly more popular

over the years to help tighten up skin and give a more
youthful appearance. However, injectables like these are
not your only option.
Massage has been proven to reduce wrinkles and puffiness
around the eyes, mouth and throat. Yes, you read that correctly:
massage. There is a type of massage that can be employed to give
you an injection- and procedure-free facelift. It is done entirely
with the hands and is also completely chemical free. It does not
require any special lotions or products and can give dramatic
results on the first treatment.
The technique is called Lypossage and was developed by
Charles Wiltsie III specifically for cosmetic reasons. It is as safe as
any other type of massage.
Puffiness around the eyes is commonly caused by skin and
muscles weakening as we age. It also results from extra fluid in the
connective tissues around the eyes. By working around the eyes,
the muscles can get rejuvenated and strengthened while the extra
circulation caused by the work can draw out the edema.
Just so you know I am not talking about sticking my fingers
behind your eyes to get at the muscles. The techniques used specifically around the eyes are along the outer edge of the eyelid. The
work is done gently and carefully with very tiny motions to both
increase circulation and break down stiff or worn-out collagen. It
increases skin elasticity, recharges the ocular muscles and reduces
the swelling. Another side effect of the work done is a decrease
of wrinkles. Your eyes can look younger, brighter and tighter
without syringes.
Another area that has very dramatic results is under the chin.
The main reason why the underside of the chin begins to drop is
www.naturespathways.com

again due to weakening muscles. Part of the Lypossage technique

works to tighten up the chin. I have demonstrated this in the most
dramatic way I could. I worked on only one side of the face and let
my client see for herself the difference it made. After the underchin work, she could clearly see that the side I had worked on was
much tighter while the other side remained puffy.
This particular technique is done in a course of 18 sessions
consisting of 30 minutes each with a minimum of two sessions a
week, with three a week being optimal. Yes, that might seem like
a commitment, but think about getting a massage facelift with no
side effects or recovery time. The first treatment will last for about
a day, but as the muscles get more work and begin to strengthen it
will last longer and longer. Eventually you will only need to come
back for maintenance instead of every week.
Our everyday choices affect the future of our lives. Some
choices can have negative impacts on our future health. Many
choose to turn to chemicals and injections or even plastic surgery.
These choices are yours to make but now you know there is an
alternative to a Botox injection: Lypossage. This technique gives
you a healthy alternative to cosmetic procedures.

techniques mastered by 16th century English craftsmen. In this
article well briefly cover the history, chemistry and useful techniques for achieving natural painted finishes.
Milk paint is a wonderful natural wood finish for your household projects including furniture, cabinets, doors, picture frames,
childrens toys and so much more. Not to be confused with chalk
paint made famous by Annie Sloan, milk paint is a historic paint
www.naturespathways.com

used for centuries prior to 1900. While chalk paint is a conventional latex product with additives for unique artistic effect, the
chemistry of milk paint is the combination of milk protein and
calcium hydroxide. Dont be worried by the chemical terms.
Calcium hydroxide is simply lime, or calcium oxide, mixed with
water to form calcium hydroxide, also known as slaked lime or
hydrated lime. Lime is a common, naturally occurring mineral
easily extracted all around the earth. When milk protein (casein) is
combined with slaked lime, a chemical reaction occurs that creates
a very sticky substance this is a binder. For color, we add natural
mineral pigments such as ochres, oxides, Gilsonite, cobalt and a
list of other natural pigments to get thousands of colors.
Fortunately, there are a handful of companies that do the hard
work for us and make milk paint available in powder form with the
protein, slaked lime and pigment pre-mixed. Just add water, mix, let
sit about 20 minutes and you have a beautiful paint! The paint is easy
to work with and will keep in the refrigerator for three to six weeks.
Milk paint can only be applied to a porous surface like wood.
If you are repainting a piece of furniture, you can either sand all
of the previous finish off (such as varnish or latex paint) or you
can pre-treat the surface with a primer and/or add ultra bond
adhesion additive to the paint. Milk paint works by binding in
the wood grain it does not form a top coat like latex paints do.
Milk paint will never check, crack or peel if applied to a properly
prepared surface. (Milk paint will flake off smooth surfaces like
metal, plastic or varnished wood.)
Milk paint layers nicely. You can get deep rich colors with two
to three coats. Let the paint dry at least 24 hours between coats or
you risk rehydrating the first coat and lifting it off the surface. Drier
surfaces in drier conditions will cure faster, of course. For interesting
antique effects, try painting a base primer color and then a second
color. You can easily wipe back some of the second coat with a warm
wet wash cloth to get an aged or antiqued effect on your furniture.
Milk paint must be encapsulated with a top coat to protect the
surface. A painted wood surface can be protected with natural
oils, buffed with natural waxes or brushed with burnishing glazes.
Different techniques work better than others depending on the
intended purpose of the surface. Kitchen cabinets, for example,
are best protected with a natural burnishing glaze that will harden
and yield a smooth, matte finish that will stand up to water and
clean easily. A fine piece of pine furniture might better exhibit a
softness and colorful wood grain with wax over milk paint. Hardwoods work very well with natural oil finishes over milk paint.
For more information on eco-friendly finishes including real milk
paint, natural waxes and nontoxic burnishing glazes, check out
our blog at www.northwoodscasket.com/blog or ask us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/NorthwoodsCasket.

Revolved
Triangle
Pose
Parivrtta
trikonasana

By Andrea Smessaert

Parivrtta: to turn around, revolve.

Trikona: three angle or triangle.

evolved Triangle helps to restore

peace and balance in the uncertain
world we live in. The happiness
that comes out of this pose will amaze you.
Revolved Triangle requires you to lengthen
to reach your inspirations, and stay
balanced as you reach and twist to squeeze
out the issues you are having in life.
When engaging in this pose, notice the
balance needed to obtain the force for the
twist and still stay grounded.

Steps

1. Start this pose in Triangle with the

right foot forward.

2. Ensure that your hips are square and

facing frontward.

3. Twist to the right side while moving

your left hand toward the outer part of

your right foot.
4. Stretch your right arm upward and
look at the tips of your fingers.
5. Your hips should be parallel and
leveled toward the ground.
6. Repeat the above steps with the left
side as well.
www.naturespathways.com

Benefits

Revolved Triangle strengthens the legs;

stretches the groin, hamstrings and hips;
and opens the chest and shoulders.

Therapeutic applications

This pose is recommended for individuals

who suffer from sciatica. Persons suffering
from a low backache also obtain relief after
practicing this pose.
As Revolved Triangle opens up the
chest, it is useful for asthmatic patients. It
is helpful in relieving problems with digestion and constipation as well.
