METHODE AND STATEMENT

2 C & F ENGINEERING SDN BHD

Method and Statement for Horizontal Directional Drilling

Each horizontal directional drilling, job site has its own unique characteristics, depending on the soil/the surface
condition to be drill. The following method statement is intended to indicate the typical activities at a job site. For a
particular job or crossing, prospective clients should contact C & F Engineering and required method statement for
their requirements.
The schedule of horizontal directional drilling activities can normally be broken down into the following parts:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Site survey and bore planning

Preparation of the site
Drilling
Site cleanup

1. Site Survey and Bore Planning

A survey team will map out the bore patches. Their function is to provide an accurate plan and elevation of the area
that the pipeline will go through. The survey team will also locate, identify and mark any buried services that run
close to the part of the bore. With
the data provide by the surveyors, the
locator operator or drilling manager
will make a bore plan and profile
using Atlas bore planning computer
software.
The bore plan will establish the
entrance and exit angles and the
radius of the pipe curvature, to
achieve the deep and length of the
drill. The bore plan also will show
any utilities that were found by the
survey team and will allow for the
necessary deviation of the pipeline
to avoid contact with the utility.
When the bore plan is completed it
will be presented to the client or his representative for approval. Upon approval of the bore plan the HDD operations
proceed.
Identification of Any Buried Services
In the trenchless world, taking a step onto any jobsite comes with certain risks. With so many active and abandoned
utilities, there are potential disasters on any jobsite. Avoiding these utilities is often a difficult and frustrating task.
But how can you make sense of it all?
Use of GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) for utility locating has been growing in popularity in recent years as the
technology improves and becomes easier to use, and more people become aware of its benefits and capabilities is
special for Horizontal Directional drilling contractor before executes of job. Granted, GPR is not the solution to every
locators problem and it does have limitations depending on certain soil conditions. However, it does help where
other technologies dont suffice, so it is best to do some research and find out what it can do for you.
Typically, three components make up a GPR system: the control unit, the GPR antenna and the survey wheel to
measure distance. GPR is looking for any point where the electromagnetic properties of the materials change. As
the operator walks over an area, the GPR system sends low-power radar waves into the subsurface from the
antenna. The control unit then records the strength and time required for the return of reflected signals. Subsurface
variations like pipes (metallic and non-metallic), wire, tanks and voids will cause significant reflections. These
reflections appear on the screen in real-time, allowing the operator to identify both horizontal and depth positioning
of buried utilities.

1. Preparation of Site
An all-weather access to the entrance and exit sites for the HDD operation must be constructed and a level hard
standing area for the drill equipment prepared at each of these sites as follow:

2.1. Exit or rig side.

A rectangular area has to be prepared that is approximately 10 meters long by approximately 5 meters wide.
Access to the entrance should be an all-weather road capable of withstanding heavy loaded transporters. The
hard stand should be either clay filling with a cover of late rite, wooden mats or steel plates.
The clean water (salt water is not allow) requirements should be met by either a reliable pumped supply or by
water trucks. If it is determined that the water supply is not sufficient to meet the need of a crossing, water
storage tank will be use store enough water to meet the requirement.
Pits will be excavated at the pipeline exit and entry points. The pits are to contain the borehole slurry. The must
be of sufficient capacity to accommodate the use slurry/cuttings mixture. Further disposal of the use Bentonite
during the operation must be possible using other means and should be arranged for together with the client.

6 C & F ENGINEERING SDN BHD

2.2. Entrance side.

The hard stand should be constructed in a similar manner to the exit. A similar access, as constructed for the
exit should be provided. A Slurry pit will be constructed to collect any Bentonite/slurry discharged from the drill
hole.

7 C & F ENGINEERING SDN BHD

2. HDD Drilling Operation

The survey team will place stake at the pipeline exit and entry points. The directional drilling unite is placed at the
exit where the drill will enter at exactly the correct location. The drill unit is then elevated at the rear so that the
entrance angle conforms to the drill profile drawing. The rig is the anchored in position. If necessary a 20 tons
excavator will also be used as an anchor for the drill rig. The drill operation begins by drilling a pilot hole using drill
bit, the drill head and the pressure injection of drill fluid. The drilling is carried out continuously in interval of 3.5
meters, equivalent to one length of drill pipe. Location of drill bit is monitored using the DCI locating system. An
electronic Transmitter in the drill head will sends information to the locator operators receiver. As each drill rod is
drilled in to the ground the locator operator take a reading from his equipment and inform the drill operator of the

location, pitch and roll the drill head. From this information the operator know the location of the drill head at all
times. The operator uses the information to maintain the preplanned path of the bore. The accuracy of the drilling is
verified by comparing the coordinates of the actual location of the drill bit against the plane drill profile. If these a
major difference between the actual and planned location of the drill bit, the operator is able to correct the actual
profile by pulling back to a correct position of the planned profile and begin re-drilling. Once the drill bit exits the
other end of the drill hole, the drill head is removed and a Reamer is attached to the drill string.
8 C & F ENGINEERING SDN BHD

Depending of the diameter of the pipe to be installed, several reaming with progressively large diameter reamers
may be necessary (i.e. with a 24 inch diameter pipe, the firs reaming could be with an 16 inch reamer, the second
reaming with a 24 inch reamer and the third reaming with a 32 inch reamer). During the reamer process, drilling fluid
is pumped under pressure thought the drill string to the reamer.
As the drill rig pulls the reamer back, drill pipe is attached continuously behind the reamer for the subsequent
reaming and pipe pulling operations.
When the bore hole has been reamed out to the correct diameter the back reamer is sent back down the bore one
and two more times to ensure that the hole is clear of any large object and that the slurry in the hole is well mixed.
This prepares the hole for the pipe to be pulled in. Once the driller is satisfied that the hole is clear and ready for the

pipe, the pull head is connected to the drill string via Swivel. The swivel prevents the clients pipe from rotation
during the pullback.

Prior the pullback, the clients pipe, which has had a pull head welded on to it, has be prepared and hydrostatically
tested by the client in a single length. The length being equivalent to or greater that the length of the drilled hole.
The clients pipe is the pulled back toward the exit area by the drill rig.

3. Leaving the Site

The site will be left clean and tidy and basically in a similar condition as it was prior to drilling commencing.

EXCECUTION

Of HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL WORK

10 C & F ENGINEERING SDN BHD

The Horizontal Directional Drilling Technology is a modern and innovative technology of pipe and cable lying, which
replaces the brutality of open cut trenches with gentle drilling through injection. It uses the principle of high pressure
injection of drilling suspensions, combined with the mechanical rotation of drilling tools.

The Steel pipe installing accuracy by HDD is provided by the permanent electromagnetic location of the drill head.
Trench less directional drilling with P.D.E. Technology is the ideal procedure for areas with certain specific features:
Areas where open cut trenches are difficult and expensive (railways, highways, roads, water courses, clay
sand, other existing installations, runways etc.).
Heavily urbanized areas (buildings and underground installations, crossings etc.).
Areas which impose the protection of environment (protected parks, reservations, archaeological sites etc.)

Execution of HDD Works:

PILOT DRILL

From the start pit, the remotely controlled drill head is advancing underground. The high pressure drilling
suspension from the rotating drill head does accomplish the pilot hole. This suspension (Water, Bentonite and
/or special additives) is dislocating the soil, larger spoils being pressed against the tunnel wall and finer particles
being transported along the tunnel with the drilling fluid to the start pit. (Pilot will maintain required depth from
the lowest invert of the last pipe).

11 C & F ENGINEERING SDN BHD

REAMING
After the drill head reaches accurate the target pit, the adequate reamer for the job will be attached. Rotating
the reamer through the pilot hole, it will widen it, to enable the simultaneous of the product.

LAYING THE PRODUCT

The product (Steel pipe or HDPE or others) is attached directly behind the reamer. The drilling suspension
enables the installation to be carried out smoothly and without damaging the product. This drilling suspension
acts as a lubricant and is reducing friction in the tunnel.

SENSOR TEHNIQUE
The three-dimensional localization of the drill head is based on electromagnetic wave emission from a
transmitter mounted in the drill tool. A data receiver (with a data screen) above the ground is receiving the
signals send by the transmitter. So the
precise position of the drill head can be
located.

F5 Fluid Pressure Transmitter (FPT)

The DigiTrak F5 Fluid Pressure Transmitter (FPT) is designed to provide instantaneous readings of the annular
drilling fluid pressure around the drill head during a pilot hole. The FPT incorporates all the functions of the F5 dualfrequency transmitters and in addition is fitted with fluid pressure sensors. Although the mechanical design of the
transmitter and its electronics is new, its dimensions are the same as the standard DigiTrak transmitters. The only
requirement for using the FPTs is that there must be a fluid path from the annulus around the housing to the four fluid
pressure sensor ports located at the front of the FPT.
Advantages of the FPT include the following:
Real-time downhole mud pressure is continuously displayed at the receiver and on the remote display at the
drill.
Knowledge of downhole drilling fluid pressure can assist in preventing inadvertent returns and or damage to
surrounding structures.
Changes in the fluid pressure can indicate formation changes that may require modifications to the drilling fluid.
Fluid pressure data can be monitored and saved on the F5 receiver and uploaded via Bluetooth to a PC for
later analysis and reporting.

F5 SST Advanced HDD Guidance System

The DigiTrak F5 SST advanced HDD wire line guidance system is easy to use, delivering quick and accurate
steering data. The system eliminates the need for a DC wire grid and its lengthy setup time. Due to the small size of the

SST transmitter, tight turning radii can be achieved.

The SST system monitors the tools compass heading (azimuth) in degrees and provides the operator with a lateral
deviation (in degrees) from the intended path for quick steering corrections.
With the F5 receiver and remote display, the operator can view real-time position and depth data. A laptop computer
also graphically displays the tools progress in real time. It shows both a profile view of the bore and a birds-eye view of
the lateral deviation.
