Edon Lady Bombers Lose

Heart-Breaker In Overtime
(November 28, 2014) EDON: It wasnt
size that got the better of the Bombers on
Friday.
Edon came into their home matchup with the Lady Aces of Hicksville quite
undersized. Yet, through their strong defensive play, Hicksville struggled to score
from the post. Most of the Aces points in
the paint came off of the dribble drive, a
method that relies on speed and catching
defenders off balance, rather than size.
Compensating for their lack of height
still left them just short of victory, however.
A tight contest throughout, four quarters
wasnt enough to decide the winner. Tied
at 44 points apiece, the two units continued their epic battle in overtime. The Lady
Aces managed to score three more points
than the hometown Bombers in the extra
period, and Edon was met with a tough
defeat to open their season, 50-53.
The nucleus of the Lady Bombers
squad, a trio of experienced veteran players, kept Edon in this game. Seniors Alex
Kiess and Kaitlin Chrisman, joined by
junior Kaitlyn Sonneberger, made up 42
of the Bombers 50 points. In particular,
Kiess and Chrisman seemed to respond
every time it looked as though the girls
from Hicksville were going to blow the
game open. They both found ways to get
open, Chrisman with her movement without the ball, and Kiess deceiving defenders with the ball in her hands. Then they
knocked down jump shots.
By the end of the night, Kiess had 16
points, 4 steals, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 3
rebounds. With 14 points, 8 rebounds, 4
steals, and 3 assists, Chrisman was a bit
more enthusiastic when it came to going
up and getting the ball. For Sonneberger,
things were a little less balanced, with a
stat line looking more like a post players.
She had 12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks,
and 1 assist, though she also only had 2
turnovers.
And turnovers were an issue for the
Bombers. They committed 21 as a team.
Chrisman made 7 errors, while Kiess had
5. Sophomore Hannah Kaylor made 6
turnovers herself, countering the 6 points,

7 rebounds, and 1 blocked shot. Its difficult to win when a team cant hold on to
the ball.
Free throw shooting was also a problem for Edon. The home team took 20 attempts from the line, but was able to make
just 11 of them. Thats only 55% from the
charity stripe. Not only that, but Sonneberger was responsible for 16 of those free
throws, leaving the rest of the team with
just 4 attempts in the entire game. And all
4 of those were taken by Kiess.
With so many turnovers, and so little
production from the free throw line, its
more than a bit surprising that Edon
stayed in this game. Shooting a respectable 32.7% from the floor, including 30%
from the three-point line certainly helped.
Yet its the 29 total rebounds that stick
out on the stat sheet. For a team with just
a single girl standing at 59, going against
a team with at least four girls taller than
that, grabbing so many boards was an impressive display of will and determination.
That sheer effort, combined with timely
runs fueled by their three core players to
counter Hicksvilles own scoring bunches,
is what kept Edon competitive and allowed
them to force overtime.
Going forward, Edon really needs to
find consistent play from someone outside
of Kiess, Chrisman, and Sonneberger.
Hannah Kaylor would be a prime candidate, being that girl who is 59 tall. The
56 Sonneberger has taken a majority of
the low post duties for the Bombers, and
while she may excel in that area, Kaylor taking some of that burden off of her
would allow both players to thrive.
On paper, Edon really had no business
being in this game. Hicksville was bigger,
stronger, and balanced out its offensive
efforts among their players with more efficiency. That didnt stop the Lady Bombers
from nearly winning, though.
Theres a lot that needs to be cleaned
up and figured out, but the Edon girls
have a chance to be really good as the season progresses.
They just need to continue to stand
tall.

SEE YOU AT THE LINE ... The awkward lunge of Hilltop junior Allie Schmitt is the result
of a foul by the Liberty Center defender that was too slow in trying to cut off her drive.
(November 28, 2014) WEST UNITY:
With only one senior returning to their
roster for the 2014-15 season, there were
many questions as to what could be expected out of the current Hilltop Girls Basketball squad.
If Friday night was any indication, the
answer to most of those questions would
be big things.
The Lady Cadets took down North Western Ohio Athletic League opponent Liberty
Center on that particular evening, besting
the Tigers 57-48 within the friendly confines of The Bunker. And that lone senior,
Destiny Denton, showed the poise that
comes with experience as she led her team
into battle. It can be difficult for shorter
players to earn trips to the free throw line,
yet the 55 guard was able to score 7 of
her 9 points from the charity stripe. Perhaps more impressively, she was able to
pull down 6 rebounds, also making 4 assists in the game.
Cierra Grant was the star of the evening, however. The junior put up 20 points
in the Cadet victory, leading the offensive
attack for her unit. She also came close to
collecting the most rebounds for Hilltop as
well, with her 8 falling just short of teammate Karrisa Crisenberys 9 boards. Crisenbery also added 8 points and 4 assists
to the victory effort.
A strong defensive presence on the
court, junior Bailey Funkhouser pilfered
the ball from the Tigers on 4 separate occasions. Her contributions to the Lady Cadets win werent limited to the defensive
side of the ball, though, as she also hit
the only successful three-point field goal
for Hilltop. Taking advantage of her three
trips to the free throw line as well, Funkhouser totaled 12 points by the end of the
night.
Defensively as a unit, the Hilltop girls
were able to limit a majority of the Tigers
scoring to just two players. Andrea Weirauch led the travelers from Liberty Center

with 23 points, nearly half of her teams total. Scoring more than half of those points
at the line, Weirauch was mostly held in
check by the Cadet defense. Meanwhile,
Peyton Spieth put up 12 points. No other
Liberty Center player scored more than 5
points for the duration of the game.
The Cadet defensive performance had
its flaws, though. Liberty Center shot 37%
from the floor, an alarmingly high number. That rate is also significantly higher
than Hilltops shooting percentage of 28%.
Some of that differential comes from the
extra seventeen shots the Lady Cadets attempted during the course of the evening,
but that still doesnt justify allowing a
team to get that close to making 40% of
their shots. That is normally a significantly difficult obstacle to overcome.
Hustle is a great way to surpass said
obstacle, and that is precisely what the
hometown Cadets did. It begins with rebounding, as Hilltop managed to win the
battle of the boards by ten, 33 to 23. Getting to the free throw line also involves a
great deal of hustle. Making as many extra points as the Tigers attempted, Hilltop
shot with 73% accuracy from the line by
going 24-33, compared to Liberty Centers
63% after making just 15-24.
Of all the statistics associated with
this game, the single most surprising one
lies in the turnover margin. Hilltop, with
a team comprised mostly of juniors and
sophomores with quite limited varsity experience heading into the current season,
managed to limit their turnovers to 8. On
the other hand, they were able to force
Liberty Center into 20 possession-costing
errors. Such savvy level of play was certainly not to be expected from the Lady Cadets this season, especially not in the first
game of the season.
If they continue to value the ball so
highly throughout the season, the girls
from Hilltop will be a formidable opponent
for all that cross their path.

CONTINUATION OF GIRLS BASKETBALL ACTION

Pettisville Blackbirds Win Thrilling

Overtime Match-Up With Wauseon
(November 28, 2014) WAUSEON:
With two players already set to continue
their playing careers at the collegiate level,
the expectations for the Lady Indians of
Wauseon are high.
And after Friday night, perhaps people
should expect a bit more out of the Lady
Blackbirds as well.
It was a nice team effort with our seniors stepping up when we needed them
to.
These were the words of Pettisville Girls
Basketball Coach Jason Waldvogel. His
team pulled off a major upset against a
very talented Wauseon team, winning in
overtime 51-50. A member of the Buckeye
Border Conference, Pettisville took down
one of the elite teams of the North Western
Ohio Athletic League with the victory.
As for those seniors referenced by Waldvogel, they did indeed come up big in the
Blackbird effort. Dana Fricke contributed
19 points to the Pettisville cause. Fellow
senior Mikala Avina made an impressive
4 three-point attempts, scoring 15 points
in total. Meanwhile, sophomore newcomer
Alexa Leppelmeier hit 2 three-pointers for
6 total points.
Another senior, Natalie Koenig, who will
be playing for Ursuline College next year,
had a standout performance in the tight
game. She produced an astounding 32
points for the Lady Indians. Coach Waldvogel had anticipated such heroics from
the Wauseon star, however.
We knew Koenig was going to get her
points. Waldvogel admitted. She is a
great player. We just needed to keep everyone else from having a big night.
Maddie Richer, a senior for Wauseon
as well, was the next best scorer for the
Lady Indians, putting up 7 points. Limiting Richers play was a tremendous accomplishment for Pettisville, as she has
already played well enough to earn a schol-

arship to play basketball for Huntington

University. Holding such a skilled player to
7 points was essential for the Lady Blackbirds to win this game.
She wasnt the only obstacle the girls
from Pettisville would have to overcome,
though.
I am really proud of our ladies. We had
to overcome some things tonight. Waldvogel stated. We put ourselves in some
situations with turnovers and missing free
throws, but continued to battle.
The Lady Blackbirds did have some issues at the free throw line. Making only 14
of their 24 attempts, they shot just 58%
from the line. Wauseon made 74% of their
extra point attempts. Turnovers were a
problem for both teams. Pettisville made
17 possession-costing errors on the night,
while the Lady Indians committed 21 turnovers.
Both teams shot the ball very well. The
Blackbirds made 48% of their field goals,
an extremely high percentage. Wauseon
shot 40% from the floor, though they did
take ten more shots than Pettisville. The
Lady Indians also won the rebounding
battle, pulling down 26 boards to the Lady
Blackbirds 22.
Pettisville was able to win this game for
two reasons. First, they executed a well
thought-out defensive game plan to perfection. Other than Koenig and Richer, only
three more players scored for Wauseon,
and they combined for a mere 11 points.
On the other hand, the Blackbirds had
seven different player add to their points
total, with players other than Fricke and
Avina contributing 17 points. And Pettisville needed every one of them.
Wauseon will go on to do great things
this season. No one really seems to doubt
that, and the bar is set high for them.
Pettisville just raised the bar for themselves as well.

Edon Lady Bombers Lose At Delta

(November 29, 2014) DELTA: Playing on the road against a North Western
Ohio Athletic League team, Edon fell and
fell hard.
Thanks in large part to a 23 point third
quarter, the Lady Panthers of Delta defeated the visiting Lady Bombers 56-28. Edon
was outscored in every period, and struggled mightily in the second half.
Delta shot 45% from the floor, which
also didnt help matters for the Bombers.
The Lady Panthers high shooting percentage didnt come from a lack of defensive
presence, or exploiting the size advantage
they held over the Edon girls. The Panthers simply made difficult shots, and
made them look easy while doing so.
Edon went into the half down 7 points,
trailing 23-16. They came out in the third
quarter determined to claw their way back
into the game. After going on a 4-2 minirun, the Lady Bombers seemed poised to
seize control of the game.
Then Delta went on a run of their own.
The basket seemed a good bit larger on
the Panther end of the court. Several shots
fell for the Delta girls, some open, others not. It didnt matter. Deltas top shelf
shooters had taken over the game.
As the deficit grew wider for the Edon
girls, desperation crept up on them. The
offense was abandoned for quick shots.
They attempted to force the ball down the
court against a vicious press run by the
Panthers, which led to turnovers. Edon
never recovered, and the Delta run never
really ended.
At the end of the game, Edon was held
to just a 22% field goal rate. A major reason
for the low percentage was Deltas ability
to limit the impact of Kaitlyn Sonneberger.
Their main post presence, the Bombers
need her to play well. However, thats hard
for her to accomplish when she only gets 4
shot attempts in the game. She didnt even
make it to the free throw line, usually a
natural occurrence for inside players. Son-

neberger scored her only two points well

after the game was already decided, and all
7 of her rebounds came on the defensive
side of the floor.
This issue goes back to the sense of
panic felt by the visiting Bombers. The senior duo of Alex Kiess and Kaitlin Chrisman tried to will their team back from the
huge gap created by the Lady Panthers.
Their shots simply wouldnt go down, however, and, with Delta only allowing Edon to
pull in 4 offensive rebounds, this left the
post presence Edon sorely needed absent
from the offense entirely.
Kiess finished the night with 14 points,
included a perfect 8-8 from the free throw
line. Unfortunately, only two more players
made it to the line, and they combined for
a mere 3-7 venture from the charity stripe.
The Edon senior also took in 11 rebounds
for a double-double, and had a steal as
well.
The other member of the duo, Chrisman, put up 9 points, 2 rebounds, and a
steal.
In terms of rebounding, Edon actually
outperformed Delta 22-20. This had a lot
to do with the Panthers making most of
their shots, though. Also, Edon committed
14 turnovers, however, most of them came
in the second half, when they succumbed
to Deltas full court pressure. The Lady
Bombers were a bit lucky in this area, as
there were several occasions in which Edon
players picked up their dribble in the corner, an egregious error as it makes trapping so much easier for defenders. They
were able to withstand those traps from
the Panthers, but this problem will cost
the Bombers down the road if not rectified.
Delta is a better team than Edon, and
is probably better than most people realized in the preseason. But they arent 28
points better. Once Delta started to pull
away, Edons problems just compounded
upon themselves.

JV Girls Basketball News

THE HOMETOWN HUDDLE

Hilltop JV Girls Stifle

L. Center Offense In Victory
(November 28, 2014) WEST UNITY:
Inviting the Tigers into their home arena,
the Hilltop Junior Varsity girls werent
very gracious hosts.
The Lady Cadets controlled the game
against the girls from Liberty Center, laying claim to a decisive 27-14 victory. The
win comes in their first match-up of the
season, and represents a win by the Buckeye Border Conference over the larger
North Western Ohio Athletic League. It
was Hilltop who came up big in this game,
however.
It was defense that ruled the night for
the Cadets. Allowing only 3 points in the
first half, including just a single point in
the first quarter, the game was already out
of question by the time the visiting Lady
Tigers found something of a rhythm on offense. Thanks mostly to the production of
a single Liberty Center player, an 11 point

second half was able to make the game

seem closer than it appeared to be on the
final scoreboard. Said player, Leatherman,
put up half of the Tigers final output, totaling 7 points on her own.
Two players on the hometown Cadets
roster bested that feat. Junior Julia Dunson lead all scorers with 9 points on the
evening. Teammate Abby Schaper, a sophomore, came close to matching that production, scoring 8 points herself.
As a team, Hilltop was quite consistent
with their scoring. After making 6 points
in the first quarter, the youthful squad
followed up by scoring 7 in the last three
periods. Liberty Center never put up more
than 6 points in any quarter.
This victory was a complete one for the
Lady Cadets. They dominated each phase
of the game. Such performances promise a
bright future for the Hilltop program.

Montpelier Takes Down

North Central In Home Win

(November 28, 2014) MONTPELIER:

The scoring for Montpelier came from an
unexpected place.
The Lady Locos played host to North
Central on Friday, and greeted them with
tough play on the court. In a tough road
environment, the Lady Eagles struggled to
respond. The result was a 39-20 victory for
the Locomotives.
Montpelier's leading scorer for the contest was a bit of a surprise. Junior Hannah Blake, usually apt to claim that honor, totaled 8 points for the game. Baylee
Hageman, a senior standout, produced 10
points, which is par the course for her. But
it was Audrey Pirtle who took the role of
lead scorer, putting up 12 points.
Pirtle's efforts could bode well for the
Locos. Blake and Hageman were the only
two consistent scorers last season, something Head Coach Tim Nicely was hoping to amend with his current squad. If
Pirtle can provide a third source of points
for Montpelier, the team could be in for a
strong year.
North Central spread their scoring
out among five players, led by the dual 5
point efforts of Rachel Oxender and Alyssa

Swank. Sophomore Makayla Hayes and

Junior Cady VanDeVoorde each contributed 4 points to the Lady Eagle total, and
senior Sabrina Pickford put up 2 points.
With 22 turnovers, North Central's
scoring was hindered by their inability to
hold onto the ball. The team has enough
talent to score more points, they just need
to place more value on individual possessions. On the other end of the court, Montpelier managed to limit their turnovers to
11.
The free throw line was another area
where the Eagles fell short. Only one player, Oxender, made it to the line for the duration of the game. However, she missed
all 5 of her attempts, leaving North Central
without a single point off of fouls. By contrast, the Lady Locos made 13 of their 16
attempts from the charity stripe, good for
an 81% rate of accuracy.
Getting a handle on their turnover issue, as well as taking advantage of their
trips to the free throw line will give North
Central a much better chance to win games
in the long term. Meanwhile, it looks as
though Montpelier may have found exactly
what they needed in this game.

Edon Bomber JV Girls Take Take Down Pettisville
CONTINUATION OF JV GIRLS BASKETBALL ACTION

Tough Loss To Hicksville

(November 28, 2014) EDON: It was a

sloppy game, to be sure.
Of course, a lot of that had to do with
the aggressive defense the Junior Varsity
brand of the Lady Aces put on display on
Friday night. Yet Edon had no answer for
the attacking, opportunistic strategy enacted by their guests from Hicksville.
The result was a 35-14 defeat for the
hometown Bombers.
Hicksville jumped on the passing lanes
all evening long, routinely intercepting
passes and pushing the ball down the
court. The youthful Lady Bombers had
fallen behind quite early, though, and
continued to try and get the ball down
the court quickly themselves in an effort
to come from behind. That wasnt an ideal
method of play for their talents, however,
and was likely the result of some panic
from a young team trying to force their way
back into the game.
There was a lot of things done by the
girls from Edon in which they could take
pride, despite how the final score read.

Shayla Mason, a freshman for the Bombers, had a decent game in her first outing
at the high school level. She led her team
in scoring with 8 points. Not only that, but
she also showed great effort and tremendous speed, running down from behind
Hicksville girls with clear paths to the hoop
on the break repeatedly. Shot selection is
something Mason will need to work on, but
thats to be expected so early into her high
school career.
Fellow freshman Kati Ewers also seemed
to find her rhythm late in the game, making a couple of baskets to bring Edon a bit
closer to the Lady Aces. She also handled
the ball throughout the contest, and did so
quite well.
The Junior Varsity girls of Edon made
a lot of mistakes in their first game of the
season, but thats understandable with
four freshmen getting their first taste of a
new level of competition.
They never gave up, though, and that
bodes well for their potential to improve
throughout the year.

(November 28, 2014) WAUSEON: The

Lady Indians grabbed the lead in the first
quarter and never looked back.
Wauseons Junior Varsity squad hosted the Lady Blakbirds of Pettisville on Friday. They defended their home court with
vigor, claiming an 18-9 win.
It was with a stifling defense that the
Lady Indians were able to control this
game. After allowing just two points in the
first quarter, the Wauseon girls held Pettisville scoreless in the second period. In
the third quarter, the hometown Indians
gave up 4 points. For the final period of
play, Pettisville could only muster 3 points.
Thats not to say the girls from Pettisville didnt have their own proud defensive performance. Wauseon only scored 6
points in the opening period, and just two

in the second quarter. The Lady Blackbirds gave up another 6 points in quarter
number three, and held the home team to
4 points in the fourth quarter. Giving up
18 points is a very respectable defensive
outing. Its just easy to lose sight of that
when the opposing defense allows just
nine total points.
Freshman Karli Penrod led all scorers
in the game with 6 points. Pettisville was
also led in scoring by a freshman. Sami
Tilley put up 4 points in the loss.
Both teams played defense extremely
well, something not always seen in a junior varsity game. It will be interesting
to see how well each offense performs in
their next game. For Pettisville, that will
be Delta. Wauseon has hated rival Archbold next on their schedule.

Edon Bomber JV Defeated By Delta

(November 29, 2014) DELTA: The
Edon Junior Varsity girls had a tough
night in Delta.
Taking on the hometown Panthers, the
Lady Bombers weren't able to keep pace
with the frenetic scoring pace of their North
Western Ohio Athletic League foe. Between
the strength of the Delta girls and home
court advantage, the uphill battle was too

steep for the girls from Edon to climb.

Delta took the game 38-14, providing Edon with its second tough loss in as
many days. Once again, freshman Shayla
Mason led the Bombers in scoring, putting
up 7 points in the loss.
It will take time for the young Edon girls
to improve, and Delta proved to be too big
a test too soon.

After a rough season for the Hilltop

Football Team, Quarterback Quinn Smith
has begun the transition to Basketball
quite well. During the Foundation Game
against Montpelier, Smith scored 15
points off of proficient shooting during
the exhibition contest.

In the Lady Cadets 57-48 win against

Liberty Center, Grant was an essential
part of the Hilltop effort. She put up 20
points, including 10 from the free throw
line, and pulled down 8 rebounds as
well. The junior may have established
herself as a go-to player for the Cadets.
