Cold weather
postpones
Christmas
activities
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The freezing temperatures of last

weekend were the main reason why the
Celebration of Lights organizers chose
to postpone their annual event. Following that decision many other Christmas
festivities were put on hold until Dec.
6 when the weather will be a balmy 2
degrees, with a low of -6, opposed to
the -34 with the wind chill we saw on
Nov. 29.
Due to the extremely cold weather
this past weekend, the Celebration of
Lights committee made the decision to
reschedule the Christmas Park opening
to this coming weekend, Saturday, Dec.
6 in order for families to come out and
enjoy the annual festivities, said Rose
Hamrlik, president of the Celebration of
Lights Christmas Park.
There will be a charity BBQ, hot
chocolate and cookies, raffles in the Remax tent, music and fireworks are all
planned for the evening.
We want it to be comfortable for everybody, nobody is going to come out
if its -30, we want everybody to come
out and enjoy it, said Tracey Rogers
with Aztec Real Estate, organizers of the
Santa Claus parade and the free movie,
which were also postponed.
We want everybody to come out and
enjoy a full day of festivities.
The Aztec-sponsored free movie was
also rescheduled to Dec. 6. The Polar
Express will be playing free of charge at
1:30 p.m., doors open at 1 p.m. Seating
is limited, and Aztec is asking people to
bring a non-perishable food donation
for the local food bank with them.
Santa in the Park will be after the movie, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and then it
will be time for the parade, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Following the parade,
head up to the Ag Grounds for the Light
Up the Night festivities.

We want your vote!!!

The five candidates vying for a spot on council were the talk of the town as the Strathmore & District
Chamber of Commerce hosted a by-election forum at the Strathmore Civic Centre on Dec. 2. The
election will be held on Monday, Dec. 15 between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the Strathmore Civic Centre.
The advance poll will take place on Dec. 8 between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Town of Strathmore Municipal Building. Your five candidates are Steve Grajczyk (top to bottom, l-r), Jason Pollo,
Allan Auger, Nicole Gibbons and Glenn Freeland. See Page 8 to meet your candidates.

Raising funds through calendars

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Alberta Institute of Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) is once again selling calendars to raise funds for animal
care. AIWC doesnt receive government
funding, with the exception of the occasional grant, and so they rely almost
solely on public support.
We are doing a calendar fundraising project, we do one every year and
its a calendar that features (animals)
that weve taken in at our centre and
its just another way for us to kind of
do grassroots fundraising, said Holly
Duvall, executive director for AIWC.
Its just another way that people
can support AIWC aside from making
a general monetary donation, which
obviously we always appreciate, its
something that they can in turn receive
as well.
This past August AIWC suffered from
two hailstorms, the buildings sustained
a lot of damage, and a few animals in
care suffered injuries. Within a 24-hour
period, nearly 30 animals were admitted with injuries directly related to the
storm.
When a Namaka resident heard
about what was happening with AIWC,
being an animal lover, she knew she
had to help.

A lot of their animals were injured

and they were looking for help, I saw
that on TV and I love fundraising. I
phoned them and I asked what they
needed, said Carol Sansome.
Duvall said Sansome was fantastic in
helping out. She collected donations
of items on the wish list to bring to
the conservation. She then personally
drove everything she had received out
to AIWC.
It was also thanks to Sansomes hard
work that each page of the calendars
was sponsored this year, so that all of
the funds can be used for animal care,
where they are always vitally needed.
Were hopeful that well sell all of
them at this point, we have over 200
of them, with this fundraising project
were hoping to raise over $4,000 and
that will go directly to animal care,
said Duvall.
AIWC was founded in 1993. They
take in injured and orphaned wildlife
that are native to Alberta and rehabilitate them before sending them back
into the wild. Each year nearly 2,000
animals go through AIWCs doors. Animals can be admitted year round; however, the busiest time is from April to
September.
Copies of the small calendar can be
purchased for $10 at Sevick Veterinary
Services.

New at the library

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Things are always hopping at the Strathmore Municipal
Library, so its no surprise there are new programs and services being offered in January.
One thing thats not new, but is undergoing a minor
change, is the Get Your Game On program. It will no longer be held on the second Saturday of each month, instead
it is becoming an after-hours program being offered on the
second and fourth Friday nights of the month, running in
conjunction with the Minecraft Mania program.
The reason we decided to move it to a Friday evening
is often families are quite busy on the weekend and we
hear from community members that theyre often looking
for things to do with their children on a Friday evening that
doesnt cost a lot, said Assistant Director of Library Services
Carmen Erison.
This is one of a few different programs that have been
funded thanks to a grant from the United Way of Calgary
and area.
A new program running on Mondays 10:30 a.m. to 11:30
a.m. starting Jan. 12 is baby lap time the program name is
yet to be announced.
Several of our members have taken Mother Goose training and this was something we have gotten quite a bit of
requests for, said Erison.

This program will be rhyming and songs and just general

lap time type of activities.
Also new to the library starting in January is the program
punch card.
Family members can pick up their program punch card
beginning Jan. 1, and each time they attend a library program they will get a punch taken out of their card, said
Erison.
All of the programs offered at the library are included.
Once a family, or participant, has received 10 punches they
will be entered into a draw.
Its a great way to kind of encourage program participation, but also to get a chance to win something fun, said
Erison.
Are you curious about Windows 8 but arent sure you
want to take the plunge? The library now has a laptop thats
available for loan within in the library. It has Windows 8,
whereas the other computers in the library run Windows
7. It is a touch screen computer and is available to be borrowed in the library to adult cardholders up to two hours
at a time.
Often our computers are so busy that this just gives another little option for people who need to use a computer
in the library, said Erison.
Borrowers will be able to take the laptop to a table at the
back if they want to have a quiet spot to log in and check
things out.

Hope Bridges Society held its 9th Annual Gala
performance on Oct. 23 at the Hope Church
venue. Over 99 talented artists from Rosebud,
Strathmore, Wheatland County, Chestermere

Were in the middle of the cough and cold season

with all the usual symptoms like sore throat, nasal
stuffiness, runny nose and of course, coughing and
sneezing. The colour of the nasal discharges is
sometimes a concern. If its green, it doesnt mean
you need an antibiotic. Its just a sign that your body
is fighting off the infection.
Colds are incurable and hey will run their course
in 7-10 days.
Its almost impossible to develop an immunity
to the common cold. A cold can be caused by any
of hundreds of viruses that can invade our bodies.
These viruses are masters of adaptation so they are
always changing which makes it difficult for our
bodies to build up an immunity to them.
There are products on the market that say they will
lessen or shorten the duration of cold symptoms.
Echinacea and zinc are often mentioned. Although
the evidence for echinacea is still inconclusive, zinc
does appear to shorten the duration of a cold by a
day or two.

Painted quilt bees

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Contributor

In June the Hope Bridges Society
won the Lets Make a Pitch contest
with their idea of painted quilts. These
quilts will be put on the outside of local buildings, and will be a way of helping the Town of Strathmore with their
revitalization efforts.
Thanks to the Town of Strathmore
and many sponsors including W. Brett
Wilson, Ron Renaud and Beerd Beekman, the Painted Quilt Project is free
to the public, said Wanda Reinholdt,
Hope Bridges coordinator.
The project, which is officially called
Painted Quilt Bees, will start in January.
Participants have two bees to choose
from - daytime or evening. Each bee
takes two to three weeks to complete
depending on the quilt design so be
sure to schedule a few weeks in your
schedule for this exciting adventure,
said Reinholdt.
The daytime option starts Wednesday, Jan. 21 (1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.)
at the Hope Bridges Studio, continuing for two to three more weeks at the

Strathmore RCMP are currently investigating two

separate hit an run collisions involving the same
suspect vehicle. The first collision occurred on
November 17th around 2:00 p.m. at the four way
stop of Lakeside Blvd and Ridge Road. A black
Honda Ridgeline rear ended a blue Honda Civic then
left the scene. The Ridgeline stopped in the KFC
parking lot, but fled again towards the Holy Cross
High School when the victim vehicle followed him to
the KFC. The same black Honda Ridgeline was then
involved in a second collision on the George Freeman
Trail just after 3:00 p.m. the same day. A grey GMC
Envoy was T-boned on the drivers side leaving the
Walmart parking lot as it was turning north bound.
The suspect and suspect vehicle have since been
identified and located. At this time the Strathmore
RCMP are looking for information from the Public to
help assist in this investigation. If you are a witness
to either of these collisions and have not spoken with
the Police, If you witnessed the whereabouts of the
black Honda Ridgeline after either of the collisions
or if you can remember being concerned of the
driving patterns of a black Honda Ridgeline through
out any time of November 17th please contact the
Strathmore RCMP.

same time on subsequent Wednesday

afternoons. The evening option starts
Wednesday, Jan. 28 (7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) at
a location to be determined, and continuing two to three weeks at the same
time on subsequent Wednesday nights.
Transportation assistance is available.
The workshop will be happening in
Strathmore only and will be facilitated
by local artist Johanna Jackins. Any

Colds are part of life in the winter in Canada. The

virus is passed on by touching infected people or
surfaces. It can be inhaled from a person coughing
or sneezing. These particles can last for quite a
while in the air. The best prevention, minimize
your contact with people with colds. Wash your
hands often during the day and try not to touch your
eyes, nose or mouth with your hands so you dont
inoculate yourself with the virus.

New Blood sells out

The Strathmore High School Dance,
Blackfoot and Glee classes presented
New Blood on Nov. 23-25 at 7 p.m. in
the high school theatre. Hayden Cutter
Yellow Old Woman plays the part of his
grandfather Chief Vincent who wrote
the poem the show was built around.
The history, stories and cultural learning brought all participants together in a
way that made director Deanne Bertsch
proud. The standing ovations on all three
nights recognized everyones hard work
and heart felt performances.

Each year the Alberta government and the Alberta

Culture and Tourism department holds a Stars of
Alberta Awards program, and this year Strathmore
resident Bruce Bishops (front, l) name was added to
the list of nominees. There were hundreds of people
whos names were put in for the award and unfortunately Bruce wasnt in the Top 2, but the Alberta
Culture and Tourism felt the need to recognize him
and they sent a certificate for him, which Councillor
Bob Sobol presented on Nov. 19. Bishop has been a
long serving member of the Strathmore Lions Club,
and is known for being an active part of the community, from volunteering his time to just being all
around great representative of the community. We
thank you very much for everything you have done
for our town, said Sobol.

Each January, the life of famous Scottish poet and lyricist
Robert Burns is celebrated in true Scot fashion, with scotch
and haggis. This year will be no different when the Strathmore Masonic Lodge once again hosts a Robbie Burns dinner.
Burns poem Auld Lang Syne is still often sung on New
Years Eve. Burns birthday was January 25, 1759, and due
to the number of dinners being held in his honour they are
spread throughout the month of January.
Why should people come? Because its part of Scottish

said Right Worshipful Brother Joe Bratton, District Deputy Grand Master Alpha District 2014 15 and Strathmore
Lodge # 53 member.
The dinner begins with a welcome
and announcements, followed by the
Selkirk Grace. After the grace is the
piping by a bagpiper, and the cutting
of the haggis, where Burns Address to
a Haggis is read and the haggis is cut
open.
The evening promises to be filled
with fun, and is a great way to be a part
of a bit of Scottish tradition, and for
those who dont like haggis, there will
be roast beef available too. The dinner
will be held at the Legion this year on
Jan. 17. In addition to haggis and the
roast beef dinner, there will be cock-aleekie soup, a Scottish soup made with
leeks and chicken stock.
Were going to have maybe three or
four pipers this year so there will be a
period within the night where the pipers will just walk about playing, said
Bratton.
Tickets are $40 per person and are

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~Bruce & Betty Bishop

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Bruce Bishops family originated on the Isle of
Jersey, in the Channel Islands, in a group of islands
between Southern England and France. In 1692,
Eleazar Bischoppe (age seven) was abducted by
the crew of a British ship, whilst playing with his
dog on the beach. The captain was mainly interested in the dog, but as the two were inseparable,
both were taken on board. The ship then sailed
for New London, Connecticut! On reaching New
London, the boy was sold to a tailor named Richard Dart, who paid for the boys passage by giving
the captain a yoke of oxen. Richard Dart took the
boy as his own, and brought him up with his family. By the mid-1700s, the English colonies were
becoming overcrowded and its inhabitants were eager to find new farmland. History shows about 8,000 New
Englanders moved to Nova Scotia, in
the late 1600s. The original farmers
were known as Acadians, and arrived
around 1685, favouring the fertile
marshlands on which to grow their
grain. The English arrived in 1750,
and a group known as Planters arrived in Horton, N.S. from New England in 1760-61.
Bruces geneology document shows
a Deacon Peter Bishop was honoured
for his part in founding the oldest
continuing Baptist Church in Canada,
having been organized at Wolfville in 1778. Acadia
University founded by the Baptists in 1838, counted
many people with the surname Bishop as graduates over the years. Further generations of Bishops
have involved themselves in church-related offices
and activities: from missionaries, ministers, priests,
stewards, etc.
Bruces father was a coal miner, and as he followed a coal seam on his knees, would fill a gunny
sack with coal, then push it out behind him as he
moved along the seam. After mining he became a
stonemason and carpenter.
Bruce was born at Chipman, N.B. on July 20,
1945 the fourth child of six. He attended school

in Chipman, graduating in 1964, then joined the

RCMP. Basic training was completed in Ottawa,
then he was posted to Banff. He served in different
communities across Southern Alberta for 25 years,
attaining the rank of Corporal. In 1984, he was
posted to Strathmore and has been here ever since!
He retired from the RCMP in 1989, and attended
SAIT in Calgary, taking his journeyman carpenters
license. For the next 23 years, he worked and enjoyed his chosen trade, before retiring in 2013. As
he says, a carpenter never really retires, hes always
being asked to do some small job!
Bettys mothers maiden name was Farley, and
geneology documents trace the name back to Somerset in England, where they held a family seat
from very early times. The name is a descendent of
British Royalty, first appearing during the reign of
Charles First.
Bettys mothers father emigrated
from England to Canada in the early
1900s, and settled in the Porcupine
Plain area of Saskatchewan. Initially
he worked for the CPR, before becoming a farmer. Bettys fathers descendants, were Russian and settled
in southern Manitoba. Betty was born
in Carmen, Man. in 1944, the eldest
of two children. Her family name was
Dueck. She advises that she and her
sister travelled by train from Winnipeg to Calgary in July 1965 to attend
The Calgary Stampede. Afterwards
they continued to Banff, where her
parents managed the Banff Motel. She met Bruce
in Banff, and they were married in Sept 1967, have
two children born in Brooks, while Bruce was stationed there with the RCMP, and five grandchildren. When the children were born, Betty became
a stay-at-home mom. When they moved to Strathmore, she took a rural mail delivery contract for
Canada Post. Unfortunately, ill health forced her to
give up that job after quite a number of years.
Bruces community activities include spending
five years as a member of Kinsman in Brooks, and
for the past 38 years he has been a member of Lions International serving in all club offices numerous times, zone chairman, cabinet secretary, and he

THE BIBLE IS NOT BORING!

Some of us think the Bible is
boring.
We often think of the Bible
as if it is a list of dos and
donts. Yes, there are some
portions of the Bible that
do have a list of what to do
and not to do in order to live
in obedience to God. These
would include The Law and
the Ten Commandments. But
there is much more to the
Bible than that.
Some of you like history. The
Bible has large portions of
history. You can read books
like 1&2 Samuel or 1&2 Kings.
You can read books like
Daniel or Acts. Some of it is
history about the people of
Israel, but much of it refers to
other historic events that are
recorded in other historical
documents.
Some of you like poetry. Take
some time to read through
the Psalms or Proverbs. If
you like romantic poetry, try
the Song of Solomon.
There are prophetic books.
You might be surprised at

When I asked what changes they had seen over the past 30
years, Bruce reminded me of the book published in 1986 Strathmore - the Village That Moved. A new book is required,
called Strathmore - The Town That Moved, Again from downtown to the highway!
There has been substantial population growth. In 1984 the
population was around 2,700, and now its over 12,000.

BY-ELECTION
ALLAN AUGER

What is my vision for Strathmore for the next

five to 10 years? I would like to see Strathmore
continue to mature and grow without losing
the small town atmosphere that we have come
to enjoy and that everyone looks for when
they locate here.
I hope we continue connecting our communities together with the pathways that we have
come to enjoy. It would be nice to see the residents of Strathmore to be able to enjoy the outdoors year round.
With the walking and biking in spring and summer and possibly
grooming the pathways during winter to include activities such as
cross country skiing. If we cant convert our pathways for this kind
of activity then maybe the town could work with one of the local
golf courses in converting their grounds for possible winter use
(possibly snowmobiling).
It would also be nice if Strathmore could offer an education facility such as Olds and Red Deer. A facility that could focus on
Strathmores involvement in the agriculture and oil and gas industries. It would also be great for local tourism if we could build the
historical park across the highway that is in the planning stages
right now.
In order for a lot of this to happen Strathmore, and by Strathmore I mean council and administration, work on our fiscal responsibilities such as paying down our debt and maximizing the use of
our current infrastructure before we look at building more. By that
I mean we should not be losing $2 million a year on our current
arena and pool. If we cant at least break even operating these facilities then how can we look at building other recreational facilities?
I would also like to see something like a community lottery started. Each year the residents of Strathmore could decide what project
or projects they would like to see funded and any monies raised
be used that way.
I guess in short that with just a little bit of effort and the continued work and cooperation of the residents by working with our
local police and community leaders and seniors, as well as council
and administration, we can all be proud, young and old to call
Strathmore home. Thank you.

They tell the

And once they share
them, you will never

Our question of the week is: What is your vision for Strathmore in the next five to 10 years?
Dont forget that the advanced polls are happening on Monday, Dec. 8. They will be held at the
Town of Strathmore office from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Anyone can vote in the advanced polls, just

My vision for Strathmore for the
next 5-10 years is something that
all of you can relate to I know
this because I have heard it from
you! I believe that for Strathmore to
succeed and be a destination town
for both residential and commercial/retail growth we have to balance growth with a positive quality of life. We must plan our residential developments
complete with green spaces and community recreation
amenities such as ball diamonds, picnic areas and off
leash areas.
Light industrial and commercial must also be planned
with an eye on ease of access. This type of planning
and consideration will create a tax base that is competitive with other communities of our size and make
Strathmore appealing to new businesses that are looking to relocate. As the town expands we will plan for
the increased load that comes with growth and commitment that our services, such as a full time fire department, will require.
The downtown core has always been a topic of discussion and one many of us are working on today. As

NICOLE GIBBONS
In 5-10 years, I see a great deal
of positive change for Strathmore
residents. As more housing communities are going up, so too does
our population. This increases demands for transit, activities, shopping, services and education.
Strathmore has the capacity to
meet the growing needs and concerns with planning, prudent spending and thoughtful
investments in our development.
I see an industrial park that creates employment and
trades training for our residents and their children, saving commutes, while easing the tax burden on homeowners. Enticing industrial business is a priority from
any sound financial standpoint; homeowners already
feel the pinch from land taxes and high water bills.
Another goal for the next 5-10 years is a downtown
core that is bustling. Many people are committed to resolving the issues downtown and, with the support of
the community, the building owners, tenants and the
committees; this is a problem that with hard work and

STEVE GRAJCZYK
It is hard to predict the future
of Strathmore within the next 5 to
10 years, as we are impacted by a
global economy and the volatile
world markets. But, as a politician
you have to establish some basic
vision so that we can move forward with planning and development of infrastructure in our community.
I do see the industrial commercial land on the southwest side of the highway in Strathmore being fully developed, as I know there is going to be a major car
dealership moving in. Also, another major store is presently negotiating for 10 acres to develop as well. Once
this happens the balance of the land will easily be sold
and filled in as the above businesses will be the anchor
tenants. As far as our industrial lands in the southeast
of Strathmore, I envision that these will also be developed by then, which would add to offset the residential

in the next 5-10 years? Strathmores
roots started as a railway town with
a strong agricultural sense. The
railway is long gone, but agriculture is still a big part of the towns
identity. That said, as the years go
by, the town has seen some major changes. The population has
grown very rapidly with a wide variety of citizens.
Strathmore has started to diversify and become a viable option in many different areas. It has become a
place for many retirees from the city to move who want
to get away from the busy lifestyle of Calgary.
Strathmore is far enough away from the city but close
enough that you can make a quick trip in for any appointments. I have also seen a large increase in young
families who move here and commute to jobs in the city
for many of the same reasons.
Also there has been an influx of oilfield related com-

Chairman of the Downtown Design Review Committee

(DDRC) I can tell you we are working hard to promote
growth in the core. I find it insulting that a few of the
candidates have commented on the state of the downtown core, yet they did not step up to the plate when
the town was looking for volunteers to sit on these
committees. Its easy to criticize on this topic while
seeking attention, but actions speak louder than words.
The DDRC committee is working very hard with owners and residents to attract new business to the core
and have planned events downtown over the summer
allowing residents to connect with their downtown.
Either you are part of the solution, like the good
people who give up their time to sit on volunteer committees, or you are part of the problem. I ask you to
look hard at the candidates who give lip service to the
issues, but dont walk the walk.
I believe in action. The only way to find out if something will work is to try. I believe our town has a bright
future as long as our elected officials and residents
work together. We are a town we can all be proud off
and we more to offer!

strategic planning will come to a successful resolve.
In the next 5-10 years, transit will be available in
Strathmore, allowing our teenagers to get that after
school job, seniors to move about town independently,
non-drivers to shop, work or visit. Strathmore needs
transit for its residents to have independent mobility to
our shops and services, this will allow our community
the freedom of movement it desperately needs.
I would like to encourage post-secondary colleges to
offer a broader range of courses. I also see more activities for our youth, particularly the 12-18 age range; currently the younger ages have more options available to
them. Our teenagers need activities to keep them busy
as well. An ambitious vision certainly, but an attainable
one, and one I believe needs exploring for our children.
As your voice in Town Council, I will always be available for comments, questions, conflict resolution and
guidance by phone, e-mail, Facebook, Canada Post and
in person. I welcome and encourage dialogue from all
residents, patrons and visitors.
I ask for your support and vote on Dec. 8 or 15.
I look forward to serving as a voice of reason on your
town council.
taxes.
I anticipate the population increasing upward to
15,000 to 17,000 people and keeping in mind as councillors we must continue to be very prudent in spending our tax dollars, especially with the recent drop in
oil prices, which directly affects the economic growth
of Strathmore. A lot of our residents depend on the
continuing oil economy and the Provincial and Federal
governments continue to decrease any monies coming
to the smaller communities as they are short as well.
Considering all the above, this will affect our ability to
improve our failing streets and infrastructure.
Overall, I have a positive attitude about the continuing growth of Strathmore due to the land and housing
prices in the surrounding communities exceeding our
prices here in Strathmore.
This will be a benefit for families and businesses
to move here and help grow our community. But of
course, there are also many other reasons that make
Strathmore a very attractive place to come live in; raise
your family and do your business.
panies pick Strathmore as a place to setup shop as opposed to the city. Over the next 5-10 years, I see Strathmore continuing to grow in all areas especially in the
commercial and industrial areas. As real estate prices in
Calgary continue to skyrocket, new companies and expanding companies alike will look toward Strathmore
as a place to set up shop.
This has several benefits for us, it increases our tax
base, which allows us to expand and improve infrastructure and recreational facilities. It also provides
more local jobs which boosts our economy even more.
Both of these benefits will make Strathmore a lucrative place for young people to plant roots and start families. Strathmore will always have close ties to Calgary,
but as we continue to grow, I would like to see us become more of an independent community with an identity all on its own. One where neighbours know each
other and interact as a community. Strathmore may be
growing, but I dont want to see us lose our small town
feel. Lets all work together to help Strathmore grow
and prosper.

A card with value

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

It is the time of year that people look at the
value of their credit cards, but Jeff Jankowski,
founder of www.hoopladigital.com suggests that
people look at the value offered by their library
card.
Jankowski negotiates rights with media providers and content holders so that libraries and their
patrons can choose and use from over 200,000
different titles, which includes 100,000 music titles, 18,000 movies and shows and over 14,000
audio books. Jankowski said new content is added every week.
We dont offer everything the library owns in
the physical world, but we offer them a lot of
what they dont own in the physical world and
make them available to the community, without
charge unless they borrow them, said Jankowski.
We are passionate about library systems. Libraries give people their voice they empower them,
keep them entertained, informed. The bar is set so
high by top leading consumer companies in the
country and libraries now have a tool that allows
them to compete and offer communities value in a
way they didnt have before. With Hoopla they are
available all the time, without waiting lists, without late fees, digitallyit empowers the library
to reach new users and be more relevant in their
communities. It is our job to deliver that technology and titles and to listen to our customers and
work together to make something great.
Jankowski said that Hoopla accesses 70 per cent
of what iTunes does on a daily basis. They have
just negotiated partnerships with CBC for viewing
rights on Republic of Doyle and Heartland, just
to name a couple of the TV programs offered on
the site.
Consumers want to read, or read without owning. Digital technology allows anyone to do that
anywhere, anytime. The technology is empowering the user, which is what libraries are all about.
Helping individuals access materials that betters
their lives, said Jankowski.
The Hoopla registration process is fairly simple.
The patron can go to www.hoopladigital.com and
register or they can download the app on their
android or Apple device. It will ask you to select
your library and then you enter your number; it

asks for your e-mail address and for you to create

a password, and then present you with the library
thats best for your choices. Once you register one
device, it will play on your other devices as well. If
you have problems, your local librarian can help.
With the Marigold Library System, you are allowed to borrow five choices from Hoopla per
month. Laura Taylor, Assistant Director at Marigold, said the library kept the number on the
lower side until they evaluate how many patrons
use it.
Marigold Library System accessed Hoopla last
June. Taylor said patrons are borrowing about 2.9
items each per month and a total of 5,000 items
have been accessed through the Marigold site. She
said the site can be used anywhere there is wifi. The movies and music stay available for three
days and then your choice is deleted from your
system automatically. For audiobooks, the duration is 21 days. Taylor suggests parents monitor
any of the library resources accessed by their children. The Hoopla items are labelled for parental
control.
Marigold Library System has several free digital services. There is Freegal, where members can
download free music and keep it on their playlists. They also have acquired a new digital magazine site called Zineo and at the cost of print versions, this is quite a bargain. Taylor said there is a
new Solero Gr 3-12 tutoring system that will soon
be available.
Marigold Library System has also formed partnerships with other Alberta libraries so members can borrow and return library items where
it is convenient. Members have to fill in a form
on meLibraries.ca and indicate the libraries they
would like to use. It is only available to members
18 years of age and older.
When asked if libraries in the future will all be
digital, Taylor said she thinks there will always
be a need for print materials. She said there is a
decline in the amount of materials that are being
produced. She gave the example of mass market
paperback books. Over a four year period, the
amount available has declined 50 per cent. She
said there are predictions that music cds will no
longer be available in one to two years and DVDs
wont be around within eight.
I think there will definitely always be a need
for a library. There is a trend for libraries to re-

duce their collection size because they are making space for
more collaborative and open things that occur in libraries,
said Taylor. There is a lot of innovative ways of providing library services and discovering what is available on a variety
of formats. I can definitely see a trend moving toward more
online digital resources. We are always watching and seeing
what is out there and whether it is useful and beneficial for
MarigoldIt is quite exciting to be in this field right now.
Some people think there is no need for libraries, but there
is now a need more than ever, with all the things that are
available. Libraries are there to be of assistance and make
them (digital resources) available.

Mardi Gras celebration

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Still not sure what to do on New Years Eve? The
Youth Club of Strathmore is hosting their second
annual New Years Eve Gala, and the theme this
year is Mardi Gras.
People should attend because last years Gala
was so much fun. It was a great meal and dance,
and a chance to mingle with friends and neighbours, said Youth Club board member Pat Fule.
Other than bars and house parties, there was
really nothing in town for adults to attend and
ring in the New Year. This is a chance to get a bit
dressed up, have a nice meal, dance if you want,
have a chance to win prizes, cash, or bid on auction items.
A few years ago there was a public outcry about

the lack of youth programming and facilities in

town, and that was one reason why the Youth
Club was formed. The club also provides affordable and educational programs for the kids, and
would now like to buy a bus or shuttle that can
take the kids to and from programs and events.
Proceeds from the gala will bring the club that
much closer to meeting their goal.
The gala will be held at the Strathmore Civic
Centre, and tickets are $75 per person, or $600 for
a reserved table of eight. The evening will include
a live band, catered dinner, silent auction items,
50/50 tickets, a photo booth, late night snacks and
party favours. Best of all its close to home. For
more information, or to purchase tickets contact

Ill be home for Christmas

SHANNON LECLAIR

Times Reporter

The Strathmore Community Choir and Orchestra, along with the Strathmore Theatre Players,
are almost ready to open the curtains on their
2014 Christmas musical Ill be home for Christmas.
The story follows an American family in late
1941, just before the bombing of Pearl Harbour,
and is an upbeat, big-band era radio play.
This story, set during a time of war, is relevant
today in many ways. Its a story of finding meaning in difficult circumstances and incorporating
the good news of Christmas into everyday lives,
said Marvin Gill, musical director and conductor.
The storyline tries to capture the joy of family,
faith and Christmas amid difficult circumstances.
It speaks to the bonds of family, of faith and of
the longing of the heart for assurance that none
of us walk alone, said theatrical director Paula
Furfaro.
The goal this year is bigger and better, and one
way thats happening is with the collaboration of

the Strathmore Theatre Players Guild. Presenting

a drama as part of the Christmas musical is something new to the choir and orchestra, said Gill.
At 60 members, we have the largest choir we
have ever assembled for a Christmas production.
Our orchestra has grown as well. This years collaborative effort has brought out new people
from all parts of the community, said Gill.
We cant wait to present it.
The Hope Community Covenant Church will be
hosting the production, which will run at 7:30
p.m. Dec. 11-13, with a final showing on Dec. 14
at 3 p.m.
Hope Community is excited to work with the
Community Choir and Orchestra and the Strathmore Players by hosting and offering a space for
new relationships to be formed, and by offering
an opportunity to come together and work for
something fun, said Hope Church Pastor Glenn
Peterson.
Ill be home for Christmas offers Strathmore
a chance to take a break from the already hectic
holiday season, and to celebrate community and
the true meaning of Christmas.

The popular movie Mean Girls,
which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is coming to the Strathmore
High School (SHS) stage.
Its a production some of the drama
students have been asking teacher Paula Richardson to put on for a few years.
This is the graduating year for a couple
of those girls, and so she decided this
year was the year for it.
The message in it is very pertinent
to high school students now. We have
been trying to get students to stop putting themselves in harmful categories,
to stop speaking in a negative way to
each other and this is just a reaffirmation of that message and the bullying
that has been so pragmatic and so difficult to deal with, its still the same message, said Paula Richardson.

Drama students at Strathmore High School have been preparing for their upcoming performance of Mean Girls Dec.
15-18.
Shannon LeClair Photo

I think the students are finding that

they saw Mean Girls as something fun
to watch but I dont know if they understood the concept of portraying the
message until they actually started into
the script and then they sort of realized
that oh, its our turn to give this message instead of just being entertained
by the movie that we all are familiar
with.
The movie follows the story of Cady
Heron, played by Taylor Stewart and
Caitlin Swan, as she adjusts to going to
public school for the first time, and being accepted by the Plastics, a group of
four shallow and cruel girls.
The play has similarities to the movie, but doesnt follow the script exactly.
Rebecca Richardson, who is also playing Regina George, did almost all of the
edits to the script, which took some
time to get ready for the stage.
Some of the students are playing

Rosebud School of the
Arts second year students
will perform The Masque of
Beauty and the Beast, Thursdays to Saturdays, Dec. 4-20.
Its a more traditional
telling of the original fairy
tale, says Jesse Peachment,
one of the cast. It has elements a lot more similar to
Cinderella, in that you have
a couple of nasty sisters as
well as a father figure, who
gets trapped by the Beast. So
theres no singing dancing
china in this version.
The show also includes a

very non-traditional twist:

Peachment is playing the
beauty, named Beau.
Director Peter Balkwill
supported the cast to develop the play in an ensemble,
which meant they were involved in making artistic and
production choices.
He asked us to compile
our own lists of who should
play whom, Peachment
says.
And one of the cast members, Chantal Marsolais, suggested they have a woman
play the beast with Peachment playing the beauty.
It really got us thinking
and the wheels turning, he
says. How much more in-

Balancing sports and education

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Athletes take many different paths in their careers. Very few succeed in their sport past the junior level, and many do not know what to do after
sports is over.
Tom McEvay is well known to many sporting
organization in North America for his expertise in
education consulting in sport.
McEvay held a seminar to provide some insight
to the Wheatland Kings about how to conduct
oneself as a player while considering their options
after hockey.

First off, its not uncommon for people to wonder what educational advisors do, people hear
about family advisors, agents and thats not what
Im doing. My background is in hockey but also in
education, said McEvay.
I just retired as a principal after 25 years and
when we got our Junior A franchise, the Port Alberni Bulldogs about 12 years ago, the ownership
group approached me and said Tom, we want to
build this franchise around the right reasons,
said McEvay. We want to create an opportunity
for young men to come to our community, grow as
human beings, be able to move forward in hockey
but more importantly to move forward in lives. I

started working at that as a volunteer and will continue do

it as a volunteer.
After retiring from the education system, McEvay experienced a high demand for the knowledge in educational consulting that he had gained over the last 12 years.
What I experienced over the last 12 years was a tremendous demand for the information and expertise that I had
developed myself, said McEvay.
I work in the whole field of this is wherever youre at as a
young player and as a student, or maybe youre a 20-year-old
Junior B player whos coming to the end of their career that
way and wondering what the options are for them.
McEvay looks at the bigger scheme of things and makes
recommendation from the players education and playing
background.
I look at the big picture of where theyre at educationally,
what have they done, if there is something we can change,
we will and I will advise it, said McEvay. I provide information about the opportunities that are out there to combine hockey and education. I provide the realities how to get
there in terms of what you need academically.
More importantly I talk about that hockey is a passion
you have but it shouldnt define you as a human being. The
moment you step away from that and love the game for the
game but understand at one time or another the huge competitive side ends for us.
He does not convey his message any differently to the
leagues as the emphasis of planning your future will always
be the main concept.
Thats the essence, whether Im talking to bantams, midgets, Junior A and B, to me its always the big picture. The big
picture is who are you as a human being, where are you at
in your development in life and hockey-wise and how does
this all work together, said McEvay.
The factors that the players should be aware of are the
financial realities, the misconceptions about how this happens and the pitfalls that happen in hockey.
I hope if there is one young man tonight who triggers
on something says I remember Tom talking about this or
generates them to look at the game differently and to look
at themselves differently, then Ive accomplished something,
said McEvay.

Kings win third in a row

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Wheatland Kings won their third game in
a row after a scrappy 5-3 win over the Ponoka
Stampeders on Nov. 29 at the Strathmore Family
Centre.
The game was a penalty-filled affair, but the
Kings were able to keep their composure long
enough to hang on for the victory.
We needed to be the team that dictates the pace
and the style of play and its tough when the score
sheet is full of penalties from both teams. Its tough
to get into a rhythm but I thought that guys are
starting to understand their roles and where they
fit in, said head coach Jeremy Blumes. I think
weve done a good job putting guys in situations
where theyre going to excel. So certain guys are
going to kill penalties, play on the power play and
for the most part guys played their roles tonight.
Blumes would like to see more consistency
from his players and for them to maintain chemistry with their linemates.
We need to see more consistency because its
like we take turns with whos going to be our two
or three best lines, or who is going to be our top
one or two top defense pairings. If we just push
on a consistent basis I think were going to see
better results, said Blumes.

The players are playing to their strengths and it

has been paying dividends in their results lately.
Right now were on a three game winning
streak and I think were understanding what we
need to do, and how we played to our strengths. I
think were a good skating team and we got a lot
of skills, its just a matter of using that skill on a
nightly basis, said Blumes.
I was really pleased with the line of Manning-Ogle-Thomson, I thought they played physical and played north, south hockey and did a
good job making sure that pucks get out of their
zone. You saw them score a goal late in the third
period because they stuck with the program.
Chris Williams opened the scoring at 6:15 of

marker at 16:14 to make it 2-0 Kings at the end of
the opening frame. Brayden Beckley and Curtis
Osborne scored in the second while Keenan Ogle
rounded out the scoring in the third for the Kings.
The Kings were scheduled to play on Nov. 28 in
Cochrane, but poor weather cancelled that game.

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings are Back!

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Herd worked hard in a pair of home games
over the weekend but just could not seem to find
the back of the net as they dropped a 2-1 decision to
the Calgary Flames and a 3-1 defeat to the St. Albert
Raiders Nov. 28-29.
It feels like were snake bitten. Weve been playing some good hockey and weve been outshooting
our opponents and just really havent been coming up
with the goals, said assistant coach Dave Attwood.
Were going to focus on some of things that were
doing right (and) practice some things that needs
some work. Weve got to believe what weve worked
on so far will bring us good things to come.
The Bisons are still right in the mix despite the losses, but somehow have to find a way to keep pace with
the teams around them.
Were right there with each team, so I mean its
tight, there is no easy games and every one is a battle.
We have as good of chance as anybody because its
that tight, said Attwood.
After coming off of a stretch of four games in seven
nights, the team felt that they were refreshed and had
their legs going the whole weekend.
Thats the beauty of this league is that we play
our games on the weekend and that last week was
tough because of the Wednesday night. We got our
legs under us and we felt we played good hockey this
weekend, said Attwood.
It was Austin Wong who scored in the loss against
the Flames, and Gary Haden scored the lone goal
against the Raiders.
The Bisons hit the road next weekend as they take
on the SSAC Athletics (5:15 p.m.) on Dec. 6 and the
Fort Saskatchewan Rangers the following day (12:15
p.m.).

The Strathmore Curling Club held their first juvenile and bantam bonspiels of the season from Nov.
28-30 at the curling club. The event saw a lot of
engaging, talented curlers enjoying the game.
All the talent thats coming up is huge, they work
really hard and they curled really well, said coach
Lynette Aschenbrenner. The one set of boys (bantams and juveniles) that won the C division were
drawing really well so that makes a big difference
and the other ones werent drawing very well but
hitting when they needed to.
The increased participation from the teams made
the bonspiel a success on this frigid weekend.
The bonspiel went really well. I guess the only
thing that worked against us was Mother Nature,
said Aschenbrenner. Its definitely getting more
popular, it filled up very fast, we were fully probably by the end of October. In years past we still
had openings right up until the bonspiel.

Strathmore High Schools curling team is accepting new curlers to learn the game as well as to build
on the success from last season.
We always look forward to a good season, curling season is fairly short. We compete in a county
playdown, then a zone, if you dont win at any one
of those stages you dont move on, said coach Brad
Steele. Theres no league, so quite often up until
January we dont play many games, we just practice.
We also try to mix brand new curlers, anybody
can come out to curl, mixed in we have a lot of experienced curlers.

Chiefs continue offensive production

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Chiefs werent a very
enthused team after suffering their first
loss of the season on Nov. 23.
The local double-A midget team responded with three straight wins, including a 6-1 thumping of the Taber
Golden Suns at the Strathmore Family
Centre on Nov. 30.
Theyre playing good, tonight was
a little more of a 60-minute effort. We
played pretty good the whole game,
we kept it simple getting the pucks
deep, battling and driving wide against
their defensemen, said Chiefs assistant coach Shadoe Stoodley.
Weve been struggling as of late but
the last two our power play has picked
it up and thats going to win a lot of
hockey games when your power play
is putting the puck in the net.
Stoodley praised his goaltenders

strong play, as he was able to stop

some breakaways early on.
Nolan Kent played really well, but
he really stood out tonight. He had
three breakaways in the first and one
in the third, said Stoodley. I think as
a core everybody played pretty good.
Alec Biletsky, Kyle Rosolowski, Jason Hobson, James Farmer, Kaleb Robinson and Chris Rebeyka scored in the
win.
On the previous night in Olds, the
Chiefs beat the Grizzlys 5-2.
Goals came from Jayse Wilson with
two tallies while Farmer, Robinson and
Biletsky added singles.
The Chiefs return to action this
weekend when they host Lethbridge
on Dec. 5 (7:30 p.m. in Hussar), before
travelling to Red Deer on Dec. 7 (5:30
p.m.).
WARRIORS WIN
The Wheatland Warriors edged the

Teamwork key
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Holy Cross Collegiate Junior Varsity
girls volleyball coach Deanna Sample
is hoping that her team use toughness
and teamwork to get them wins this
season.
Some of the players are rugby players and she is hoping that toughness
combined with size will see results for
this young team.
For our high school girls, its a JV
team, so its primarily Grade 10s with
a couple of 11s. A large majority of
the team played with me last year on
the Junior A team, so in terms of cohesiveness we should be able to take
off of where we left off last year, said
Sample.
There are some new additions to
the team but they still will be a young
team that will have to work together to
combine their skills.
We have some new additions, its
should be good. A big focus for us
right now is ball handling skills, shoot-

ing skills, said Sample.

Weve got a lot of strong athletes
and just owning those skills and refining them, and team work is huge thing
for us as well.
Samples expectations is that the bar
will be set higher this year for the girls
performance on the court as they will
be one of the smaller teams.
The level of play is going to have to
be raised from last year and because
were in high school now, so were expecting to see stronger, larger teams.
One of the largest challenges will be
our size because were not as tall and
strong compared to what other high
school teams will look like, said Sample.
The strength for this young team will
be speed, as it will make up for the
lack of size in games.
We have six Grade 10s, two Grade
11s and have two Grade 12s. They
wont play in league games but will
come to tournaments. They bring a lot
of leadership to the team and just having them around is nice, said Sample.

the increased amount of time that kids
have to put into academics, said SHS
athletic director Carrie Westgard. We
did a good job of recognizing them
but I think this is another step in saying thank you very much, we appreciate what you do and they definitely
deserve the recognition. We hope its
going to get bigger and better.
The banquet was a true testament to
how committed the players are to providing excellence in school athletics.
We recognize a lot of stuff here at
the high school (such as) academics
and all the community things that everybody does. The kids are awesome
and they need to know it in the end,
said Westgard. You get to meet so
many different kids and each of them
is different and a blessing and you
learn more about yourself depending
on what the kid is like.
I dont think anyone regrets coaching, its hard and takes a lot of time,
but in the end the reward is definitely
worth it.

Jr. A Hawks build around speed and skill

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

TheHoly Cross Collegiate Hawks Junior A boys basketball
team will have a more youthful look and will have to rely
on their speed to have success in this upcoming campaign.
Were a younger team this year, Id say about half and
half of Grade 8s and 9s, we are a little bit smaller but fast.
Our plan this year is to play an up tempo, speed game,
were going to be doing a lot of man-to-man defense so
conditioning is going to be key, said coach Troy Filipionek.
He admitted that this would be a rebuilding year with an
emphasis on building team character.
This year were treating as a rebuilding year. Were going to be big about building not just basketball players but
character, one of the things Mark (coach Rawlek) will incorporate is resiliency into our basketball season, said Filipionek.
Were going to create some adversity for them and try to
build resiliency. Our goal is to get better from now until the
end of the year.

The team will be working on a strong conditioning level

and the basic fundamentals of basketball.
Hawks Junior A girls assistant coach Angela MacLean will
be looking for her team to learn the basics of the game and
develop around the talent that they possess.
We have a lot of girls with some great talent and were
currently working towards improving the basics and working skill development and hopefully well have a strong
year, said MacLean.
When you watch the girls this year, you will notice that
there are a lot of vocal players in the line up.
I think we have a lot of girls that can be vocal players
and I think they have a good knowledge of the game, so
were going to be working on skill development to improve
their play of the game, said MacLean.
(Our goal) is to learn the systems of zone defense and
how were actually going to be getting our points. Were going to be relying on lay-ups, fast breaks and good defense.
MacLean hopes that what they can take from practices
into games is a high skill level and being a well-rounded
player on the court.

Jr. B Hawks basketball want player determination

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks Junior B girls basketball
team will be relying heavily on skill development this year.
The team is mostly Grade 7s, I only have three Grade 8s
on the team. Sure, winning is always fun, we do want the
girls to win some games but skill development is the main
goal, said head coach Vito Peraino.
Despite only having two practices, Peraino has been impressed with the knowledge that the players have been able
to bring to the team, and their strength will be defense.
The good news is they all seem to know the sport pretty
well. The street ball versus an actual basketball game is going to be a little bit different and I think thats where were
going to struggle is getting away from everybody attacking
the ball, said Peraino.
Im not too worried about our shooting, a lot of our kids
can shoot, and theyre able to put the ball in. I think defense
is what were going to work on the most.
The goal for the group is to have consistent effort on the
court and be able to take what they learned in a practice/
game situation and for some to move up to Junior A next
season.

You definitely want to have fun but practices are practices and were here to learn. The whole idea is these girls
will be on the A team next year, whether theyre Grade 7s
now, theyre going to be Grade 8s and beat out some of
those Grade 9s next year and thats the goal, said Peraino.
The Junior B boys will be a team that will use their speed
down court as they are a smaller team.
I think we have a lot of heart and character kids. Theyre
all new kids for me, I dont teach many of them, so Im
looking forward to the next few practices to see where their
strengths lie, said coach Benjamin Chin.
Honestly its so early and with every new team we start
fresh and play off our strengths and build up our weaknesses. I think well be a coachable team, lots of good attitudes
on the team. We have some leadership from last year in the
Grade 8s so Im looking forward to see how they lead by
example and how the Grade 7s fill a certain role throughout
the year.
The strength will hopefully be speed with some skill ball
handlers.
Im hoping it will be speed because we dont have a
lot of size and some aggressive, skilled ball handlers, said
Chin.
Both teams will be playing tournament play this season.

Speed key for senior Hawks

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks senior boys basketball
team hope to improve upon their third place zone finish and
get back there again this season.
We have 11 players altogether, nine of our players are
returning from last year. We were a junior varsity team last
year because we had no senior players, said coach Tony
Hamilton-Irving.
We have three senior players, which puts us up into
a senior category. So we play in the Foothills Basketball
League - its hard to say what were expecting of them in
that league. A lot of the teams will be the juvenile ones that
we played last year.
Hamilton-Irving hopes his team will contend for a higher
seed so that they can get a chance at the zone title but
knows it will be tougher competing against senior teams.
Were hopeful that well be a team that will contend to go
to Zones and we finished third in zones last year, so wed
like to get there again and do even better, said Hamilton-

Irving.
I assume itll be a lot of the same players that we played
last year in juvenile and we finished second in our league
out of eight teams. We hope to do the same again this year,
said Hamilton- Irving.
Our team is built for speed, were not a large team in
terms of size but were a really fast team. Thats what a lot
of teams found competing against us.
The leadership group on the team will be asked to assist
not only in the overall team play but the new players as
well.
Chris OLeary and James Bautista, would be two of our
starting Grade 12s and theyve been playing for the school
since junior high. They are highly skilled, very quick and
good shooters so theyre definitely the leadership on the
floor, said Hamilton- Irving.
Josh Hauck plays four or five positions on our team, hes
a Grade 12 and is a strong basketball player.
The adjustments of this team will be the addition of the
two Grade 10s as they will have to adapt to the systems and
have to accept less floor time at points during the season.

ZIMMERMAN,
Sharon Ruth

April 9, 1946 - Nov 23, 2014

Sharon passed away peacefully

in the Peter Lougheed Hospital on November 23, 2014. Sharon was born in
Outlook, SK and grew up in Oliver, BC. In 1977
she moved to Carseland and has been the owner/
operator of The Blue Saloon up until her passing.
Since her arrival, Sharon has been an integral
member of the community. She was a driving
force behind youth sports, a valued volunteer
assistant at the school and a silent benefactor
to many. Sharon has worked quietly behind the
scenes to assist those in need with kindness and
compassion. She could always be counted on
to go above and beyond the call of duty to make
everyone in the community feel welcome and
appreciated. Her generous spirit and kind heart
will be greatly missed by everyone in the community and beyond. Sharon is survived by her two
sons, Jeffrey and Jordan and 6 grandchildren. A
celebration of her life was held on Sunday, December 7 at 10 am at the Carseland Community
Center. Please come with a smile, a laugh and a
good story. In lieu of flowers, contributions can
be made in Sharons name to the Alberta SPCA
(10806 124 St, Edmonton, AB, T5M 0H3). To send
condolences, please visit Sharons obituary at
