Purpose
The purpose of the course is to develop an understanding of a philosophical and scientific approach to observing
and describing communication behaviors. Methodology both formal and informal will be discussed through a study of the
different communication disorders that a Speech-Language Pathologist will face in clinical practice.
Students will develop knowledge about:
The clinical process and where assessment finds its place
The steps in clinical problem solving
Obtaining and evaluating preassessment information
Assessment procedures common to most communication disorders
Basic assessment procedures for assessment of disorders of Articulation, Language, Fluency, Voice,
Neurological, and Dysphagia
Multicutural issues in assessment
Standardized testing procedures, available test materials and how they are constructed
Informal testing procedures
Analysis of information gained during assessments
Clinical decision making based on collected information
Clinical report writing

Students must be present on test dates. No make-up exams will be given after test dates unless previously
arranged. If you must take an exam on a different date, you must set up a day and time in advance.

PROJECT: Test Summary Notebook 25%

For this project, you will use the Test Proficiency List which can be found on the practicum website:

http://www.utdallas.edu/~lougeay/practicum.htm

Write a summary of the tests listed in each section. The number in parenthesis ( ) is the number of tests from each
section which must be summarized. Follow the “Test Evaluation Form” provided. Please type and put in a notebook.

This project is designed for you to gain experience in looking at testing materials and understanding their
manuals. It is not meant for you to copy summaries already written in books about tests.

This is an individual project, not to be done in groups.
