communication.

Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, a student will be able to:
• Describe the anatomical and physiological basis of communication,
• Accurately identify components of respiration, phonation, resonation, articulation,
and audition and their interactions.

Required Text:
Anatomy and Physiology for Speech, Language and Hearing
2nd Edition
Seikel, King and Drumright

Course Requirements:
• Four (4) exams will be given during the semester. Each exam will be worth
100 points. The instructor will only provide make up exams with advanced
approval (i.e. prior to the exam). It is the student’s responsibility to contact the
instructor to reschedule the exam. Failure to contact the instructor prior to the
exam will result in a “0” for the exam. All exams and make up exams will be
given during class time.
• Reading Assigned Chapters
• Attendance in Class

• Copies of lecture notes will be made available. It is the student’s responsibility to

access these notes prior to class. Lectures will include the notes. Lectures will
not allow for time to take down the information presented on each slide. Lecture
notes will be made available to students:
o Electronic reserve at the McDermott Library in advance of each new topic
(i.e. respiration, phonation). Notes through McDermott Library will be in
powerpoint format

• Exam Preparation Optional : Students will have the option to participate in

exam preparation activities. An example of such an activity is “build you own
larynx”. The activities will assist the student with preparing for the different
exams. The total points available for these activities will be 10. The following
guidelines will be used if the student does or does not choose to participate in the
activities:
o Students will complete a form indicating if they do or do not wish to
participate in these activities.

o If the student does wish to participate in these activities, the following

rules will be followed.
§ Exam preparation activities will be handed out by the second class
of the new “unit”.
§ Exam preparation activities are due the day of the exam.
• If the student cannot attend the exam for any reason, the
exam preparation activity is still due to the date of the
scheduled exam
§ Students participating in the exam preparation activities will
complete every activity
• If the student does not turn in any of the assignments on the
specified date, they will forfeit participation in the exam
preparation assignments, and will not receive any
additional points. Consequently, grading will be the same
as for those students who do not wish to participate in the
exam preparation assignments.
