ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

Course Description and objectives: This course will serve as a foundation of anatomy and
physiology for all aspects of communication, including respiration, phonation, resonance,
articulation, and neurological aspects of communication. At the conclusion of this course, a student
will be able to describe the anatomical and physiological basis of communication, accurately
identify components of respiration, phonation, resonation, articulation, and their interactions.

Required Text:
Seikel, J. A., King, D.W., & Drumright, D.G. (2000). Anatomy and Physiology for Speech,
Language, and Hearing. (2nd ed.). San Diego, CA: Singular Publishing Group.

Course Requirements:
(1) EXAM: Four exams will be given during the semester. Each exam will be worth 100 points.
No make up exam will be provided unless approved in advanced by the instructor. Students are
limited to one make up exam, which can be taken during class times during the following week.
Extra credit assignments will not be given in this class. Instead, every exam will have bonus
questions. Students who take exams at the disability services should inform us prior to every exam
regarding the ir exam times.

(2) PROJECTS: a. Undergraduate students will be required to do a short 5-7mins presentation on


one of the assigned topics. A maximum of 4 points will be added to the exam with lowest score
based on the clarity and information presented in class. Style of presentation can be informal.
Information for these presentations can come from other textbooks and/or journal articles.
b. Graduate students will be required to do a 20 minutes presentation of one of the assigned topics.
Students are required to develop a power point presentation and send it to the instructor at least
two day prior to the date of presentation for approval. Information for this presentation should
come from journal articles and book chapters published in the last five years. A maximum of 4
points based on the clarity and information presented in class.
